LCD For two months during the sum- mer, four senior students rep- resenting Youth For Understand- ing, stayed in European countries. Helen Camerino and Michelle Strange visited Finland, Mike Cal- zada resided in Norway, while Kathy Van Nice lived in France. Each stayed in a regular home and were treated as a member of thefamily. During the past school year two students, sponsored by the Ameri- can Field Service, attended Mira Costa. Catherine Cravero from France and Kalule Luyumbo of Uganda were members ofthe Todd and Brigham families respectively. All agreed that there is much knowl- edge and friendship to be gained by traveling to foreign countries. A.F.S. students Kalule Luyumbo and Cath- erine Cravero Helen Camerino made herself at home in Finland. Cindy made many friends at her new home. i South Africa provided many social activities. O . During the summer, five Seniors attended Boy's and Girl's State. John Beranek, Mike Calzada, Brady Cherry, and Carl Hillier went to Boy's State and Karen Cogswell attended Girl's State. The students werechosen by the American Legion. The boys went to Sacramento State College and resided at West- bridge Dorm while Karen stayed at SquawVaIleyVillage. Elections were held for certain offices and government positions. John was elected an assembly- man, while Brady and Mike became deputy sheriffs. Karen campaigned for city council and became the mayor. All in all, participation was the key to learning throughout the week. C.S.F. ln order to become a member of the California Scholarship Feder- ation, you must have had an aca- demic 3.5 grade average during the preceeding semester. Appli- cations for membership were reviewed by sponsors, Mr. Arthur DeSantis, Miss Mary McVey and Mr. John Silvlus. Seniors who qualified for C.S.F. four of their last six semesters, one being in their final year, were eligible to be a Sealbearer. Once every six months, the group took a short vacation from school.
