An Open Letter to the Senior Class: Dear Seniors: lVlira Costa High School has been your Home away from home for the past three years. You have enjoyed the dances, suffered through exams, and now having set up standards and traditions, you are ready to leave behind the classrooms of Rlira Costa, taking with you only the memories. In later years, some trivia here and there will remind you of the good times you have had here. Certainly you will never forget the thrilling games or the sudden butterflies in your stomach when you received a blue slip requiring an immediate appearance in the office, and you will treasure the old editions of the paper, bids and invitation to the larger dances, and your yearbook. But, one last lesson before you close, for good, the old school books. Do you know how Nlira Costa received its name? Do you know who wrote the Alma lklater? And did you know the Pioneer League was named by a student here? lllr. Gonzales, an instructor at Redondo Union High School, named the new school Mira Costa which means view of the coastfl Lilah Landers, a former student here, named the school paper the La Vista, and the book you are now reading was named by lVIary Jane ibliller. The first year at hlira Costa the school colors of green and gold were chosen by the Freshmen and Sophomores. Nliss Helen Fowler, former drama coach at MiCoHi, and Joyce NIacF,lvey were the writers of our Alma Klater while Cecilia VVhitespear of the Class of ,53 named our mascot--The lvlustang. Bill Bradley named the Pioneer League, and Eleanor Carr submitted the school motto of, VVe are the Foundation, Upon Us the Nation VVill Restf, And your diploma was created by the artistic hand of Bill Buffett. And, finally, you Seniors have your good friend and principal, Klr. Lloyd Walle1', to thank for spearheading the Senior Patio Project. So you see, there is a lesson worth learning-you were here when these things were named, you know the people who named them, you have played your part well. Never forget that the part you have played in the founding of this new high school has been an important one. You have laid the foundation, the building will go up slowly but surely through the years. -I ADMINISTRATION AND FACU LIY South Bay Union High School Disfricf BOARD OF TRUSTEES John M. Cooperg R. Then came the Spring Swings, the Christmas Formals, the Junior Prom, and then the Junior-Senior Prom. There were the class productions, the Junior Play in '52, and the Senior Play in ,53. We always re- mained as the victorious ones in the Paper Drives. How proud we Sem f y were of senior rings! And then came the thrilling day that the Senior Patio was dedicated. And the Junior Picnic and Senior Ditch Day were traditions that we, as the first graduating class, set for lNIicohi. We will always remember . . . the thrilling football games, CIF in Paso Robles, the basketball games with CIF in Barstow, the assemblies, the clubs, the teas and banquets and dinners, ' and all the wonderful things we did together. To many honors be- stowed upon us, in sports, in scholastic endeavors, and the citizenship and character awards. TYMME HARDIN We thank whole-heartedly, the faculty, our counselors, and our Tfvdfwff officers, who have worked hard to make such wonderful years pos- sible. We have had the opportunity of few, to remain the upper- classmen three out of four years of high school and we have remained loyal to the school that stands first in our hearts. So, we the Seniors of 1953, salute, the lowerclassmen. We leave to you the traditions and standards that we have set up. Yes, we have much to be proud of, and now comes the big day, graduation, when we, as students of Mira Costa say goodbye to N each other, to friends, to teachers and to high school and go on only Dfzlfjfiiffli SPENCPR to remember, Lest we forgetf, I f? JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY VVe, the Juniors, the class of '54, will miss our senior classmates, but their graduation brings to mind something new for us, some- thing to be looked forward to . . . for we will be the upperclassmen of Mira Costa. The Junior Class presented this year for the first time, a class production, the Junior Play, with the proceeds going to honor the Seniors at the First Annual Junior-Senior Prom. VVe received our class rings and have put our best foot forward at many events both on and off campus. We are proud of many of our class members who have furthered outstanding talents, and have received awards for their achievements. We have participated actively in every social and scholastic endeavor made at Mira Costa. VVe respect and honor the Senior Patio, as next year it will be ours. And we sincerely appreciate the confidence extended towards us, as the new school year approaches. VVe feel that we will leave an impressive mark at Mira Costa as long as we retain our active class spirit which has become characteristic of the Junior Class. letta, Lucretia Arias, Patricia Armstrong, Jimmy Arney, Joy Atteberry, Paul Austin, Gloria Averett, Kenneth Avery. TRACK The Mira Costa spike squad suffered this year from lack of facilities and also from a lack of man power. Only nine men turned out to support Coach jack Rowan in the Pioneer League track meet this year. Next years track possibilities look good and the Mustangs should take on a few honors for the old alma mater. TRACK The Mira Costa track squad placed third in the B Division in Pioneer League this season. Outstanding track athlete was Don Askew who participated in the 100 yard dash and also in the 220 for the Colts. HTRACK The lVlira Costa lightweight track team survived a rugged season on the Cinderpaths. Building for :1 strong B team next year, Foach -lack Rowan came up with some outstanding talent to work with next season. GOLF The Mira C'osta golf squntl turned in a successful practice season this year under the capable instruction of Mr. Gerald Thompson. The Mustangs were not in Pioneer League this seasnn but are planning on a strong squad next 3ear. Tony Arce was the outstanding golfer of the year and will return next season to lead a much improved putting team.
