Russell, Mrs. Karen Martin, Mrs. Anne Pate and Clyde Kiang. librarian, Clyde Kiang, finishes up another order -l - .AH JE of books for the Chcmgeover goes on Memorial Library is continuing the process of changing from the Dewey Decimal to the Li- brary of Congress system of book classification. About 26,000 books have been classified so far. The main purpose for the change in systems is to reduce the cost and time involved in processing books. . In order to increase both upstairs studying space and bookshelf capacity, the books are be- ing moved downstairs and the periodicals up- stairs. This is expected to be completed by the end of this summer. ' Current book acquisition rate of new titles is over 6,000 a year. The library has approximately 102,000 books, subscribes to over 1,000 periodicals, and has nearly 1,800 microfilm reels of past news- papers. The library added some new equipment this spring. Included are a coin-operated photo copy- ing machine and electric typewriter. They are self-supporting and for the overall convenience of the students. 27 I

Miss Adeline Erickson is the secretary for Dr. Warren G. Allen, division chairman. To prepare Teachers One of the largest divisions on campus, the division of education and psychology, has 80- 85 per cent of the MSC students enrolled in its curriculum. The division has continued its Work in preparing adequate teachers for the state and nation. by constantly revising the curriculum to keep abreast of new techniques and approaches to teaching. Students in the teacher education program are continually screened on the basis of health, personality, scholarship and professional ap- titudes. This screening keeps the students alert, for admission to the division does not guarantee continuation in the program. Before a student can do his student teach- ing, he must complete approximately 20 quar- ter hours of professional sequence courses in the backgrounds and methodology of educa- tion. A Reading Clinic conducted by Miss Bertha Okland is one of the far reaching services of- fered by the division. This clinic is for the training of elementary teachers who will help children with reading problems. The psychology major Which Was added last year is developing rapidly, With growing student interest in the field. Members of the division of education and psychology are front row: Dr. Warren G. Wide world of sports The division of health and physical educa- tion at Minot State led the sporting World in northwest North Dakota with sportsmanship as its keynote. Women's Recreation Association sponsored a playday for high school girls from the area last October. WRA presented the physical ed- ucation program to the girls attending the playday. Another activity and meeting session took place in Dickinson last fall with the col- lege WRA participating. Sports rules clinics along with athletic con- ference meetings Were part of the year's Work. The annual high school girls track meet was a feature of this spring's Work. This track meet, under the supervision of physical educa- tion majors and minors in the track and field class, promotes feelings and competitiveness among the participants. Along with the four seasons of varsity sports program, the division maintained a strong intramural program. Participation in these events remained high. Hampered by problems of space for I-M activities, students still participated in I-M curling, football, bas- ketball, track and volleyball. Staunchly overlooking his domain is Vence Elgie, head of division of health and physical education. Taking a moment to relax are Dean Bachmeier, Hank Hettwer and Wiley Wilson.
