Yes, it seems impossible that four years have gone by since we landed as Freshmen at Minooka High all starry eyed and green. However, our first three years passed quickly, and by the end of our junior Year the anticipation for our Senior Year to come was great. Miss Kasak called a class meet- ing for us to elect our class ofhcers for our last year. Tom Murley was chosen as President. Margaret Vaksdal was to be his right-hand lady as Vice-President while Villa Williams was to take the minutes and Joan Knudson to record the finances. The thoughts of being a big senior with noth- ing to do were soon squelehed when we returned for that long-awaited year in September, 1956. Reports, term papers, and the Constitution tests made us work-big seniors at that. Oh, don't get us wrong, we had many good times too in senior year. Six of our boys led our basketball team to many victories-Tom Murley, Leonard Peterson, Joe Schuck, John Stegman, Ron Dirst and Merle Brust. Our senior play, 'lBoy Appealf' turned out to be a big success with Margaret Vaksdal, Villa VVilliams, Bev Cook, Andrew Anderson, Jeanen Bohnstengel and others in the spotlight for the event. Of course. behind the scenes was our untiring director, Miss Holt. We sponsored the Annual Christmas Party this year. Santa came and distributed gifts to the students and teachers. From that time on we began to look forward to Skip Day and the Prom put on for us by the Junior Class. On May 31, 1957, we were thrown into the Outer Space of the world. Many memories were collected during those four years at MCHS, which will never be for- gotten. We're proud to be graduates of Minooka High School, and we shall always display that pride as we '4Reach Our New Horizonfl 3 The cast poses for a final bow Our Satelite Scooping activity in our Universe V' fs i .4 V K. 1 Q v .f f f.f --gew ' Q Ffss. .. fidiff . The sophomore class of 1957 have had a nice year. Our officers elected the first of the year were: President Kathi Anderson, Vice-President Jim Herringer, Secretary Margie Knudson, Treasurer Joyce Murley. Representing us in the Student Coun- cil were: Barb Heap and Willie Spencer. They did a very fine job. To raise money for our class treasury we gave a Thanksgiving party on November 16, which was a big success. During the party we featured an imitation of the well-known tele- vision program It Could Be Youf, We also had an Elvis Presley contest, in which three boys participated. Another money - raising project was our class lu.ncheon held at the Methodist Church on March 22. Four of our boys played basketball, and two played on the baseball team. Two of our girls were ehosen to lead the school in cheers during the basketball season. During the past year our academic average has improved. We now have eight of our class representing us on the honor roll. We all would sincerely like to thank our class advisor, Miss Manfred, for her help and cooperation in making our year the success that it has been. is :sk ir' ER Q in wvkmw 'QM LQ . as yin' gg, as ef 2' A Ii if 2 --f-f idk, as 'M i 'Q N . 3 gk 6 ll. g . 3, gi in . am Ki J 3. ga., ' 23322 'vw f ' :'.:,.::g, .... , 3 Jifggg'-fwi' .2 ,gi is F 932355, Freshman President ...... High School Band Minookzl can be proud of its band. It has earned an important place in our school life thru outstanding performances. During the the past year. the band has played three con- certs in Minooka, an exchange concert in Mazcvn, a eoncert for the Grundy County Teachers Institute in Morris. Besides playing for basketball games, the band took part in several parades. including homecoming at Minooka. Morris and Plainfield and three parades in Joliet. Oak Lawn was the scene for district I.H.S.A, competition this year. Minooka for the first time, competed in class C and was the only class C band entered to take a Superior rating. Of nine solos and ensembles entered, five received Superior ratings. At the state final contest held at Rock Island. the Clarinet Duet fBarbara Binkele and Joan Knudsonj and the Brass Quintet CVirginia Wallin, jackie McCoy, Mary Lundstrom, Larry Dwyer, and Lydia Foxj earned Superior ratings. The band received a Superior in Con- eert and Good in Sight-reading for a final grade of Excellent. Barbara Binkele represented the band at the Illinois All State High School Band held in Springfield in February Grade School Band The Grade School Band, now in its second year, has improved considerably since its begin- ning in December, l955. Mucrll valuable experience is gained for these students who will eventually become members of the High School Band. Besides winning a Superior rating at the district grade school band contest, the Grade School Band played at the Christmas and Spring Concerts and performed for the Channahon Grade School. Eighteen of our thirty soloists and ensembles won Superior ratings at the district contest and, of these, ten went on to take top honors at the state contest held at Toulon. Beginning Band The Beginning Band, made up of 23 4th and 5th graders, is the foundation of the instru- mental music program. Many skills are required of a successful bandsman. The funda- mentals of good musicianship are begun in this organization so that each member can advance to the Grade School Band. Student To give the student body an appreciation of the workings of democracy, to foster 'higher ideals in the school, and to bring a bettcr co-operation between the faculty and the pupils . . . this is the aim of the Student Council as it is stated in the Constitution which was drawn up by the members of the Student Council this year. In an effort to represent the students and to create within the student body a greater interest in school and school activities, the Student Council has sponsored a variety of activities this year. Some of the assemblies arranged by the Student Council were: a demonstration on sa-fe driving, the movie Macbeth, a combined choral and band con- Tonya Wcers, Larry Peterson, Willie Spencer, Barbara Heap, Lois Severson, John Findlay Helen Brust, John Stegman. Two members of the Council, Lois Severson and Barbara Heap, represented Minooka High School at the Illinois Association of Student Council Convention held in Chicago on April 26 and 27. Discussing, planning and carrying out these activities involved a great deal of initiative and responsibility on the part of Council members. Acting as a liaison between students and faculty, the Council members have shown qualities of leadership and loyalty which have made their year very successful. .4 l I 3 ml 'f I 114 .7'g1'4.gy.q-r.-ew. Dennis Wilhelini and Mr. Doriek Each year a trophy is awarded to the player on the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads who makes the greatest percentage of his free throw attempts. This year the Wfayne Thompson Nlemorial Trophy went to Torn Nlurley of the Varsity squad. Tom made a fine 73 per cent of his free throw attempts. Dennis Wilhelmi of the Junior Varsity squad won the Robert Rushton Nletnorial Trophy by making il terrific 81 per eent from the free throw line. Cheerleaders Basketball The year 1956-57 showed another successful season for our Indians, who wound up with a season's record of 15 won and 9 lost. Our boys started the season good with 4 wins and 2 losses. Tlhen they lost a heartbreaker to Wilmington in the last seconds of the game after having held a 5 point lead with 30 seconds remaining. This defeat hurt the morale of our Indians, and they didnlt seem to recover until the Oswego game, after which they pro- ceeded to win 9 out of their last ll games. The Indians captured second place in the Mazon Holiday Tournament and second place in the Fox Valley Conference. They lost to Plainfield in the opening round of the Fox Valley Tournament. Probably the highlight of the season for the team was their thrilling win over an inspired Newark team by a score of 85 to 83 in an overtime. This was the last home game of the basketball careers of Ron Dirst, John Stegman, Tom Murley, Leonard Peterson, Joe Schuck, and Merle Brust. The Wayne Thompson Memorial Trophy was awarded to Tom Murley who had a seventy-three per cent average. Dennis Wil- helmi made eighty-one per cent of his free throws to win the Ro-bert Rushton Memorial Trophy for the Junior Varsity. This year the school awarded a Most Valuable Player award along with the Sportsmanship award. Tom Murley was chosen by his teammates and Mr. Dorick for both of these awards. ll N ,ji Nl SAS I x xiii ff, 0 x V x N First Row, Left to right: Ron Dirst, Jim Winkler, Dennis Wilhelmi, Joe Schuck John Stegman Standing: Coach Dave Dorick, Art Hutchinson, Tom Murley, Merle Brust, Leonard P1 terson Larry Todd, Glenn Sing, Manager. oop Bound Cagers From Top, left to right: Leonard Peterson, Forwardg Tom Murley, Guardg Art Hutchinson Forwardg John Stegman, Forwardg Joe Schuck, Center. 48 wi From Top, left to right: Ron Dirst, Forwardg Larry Todd, Guardg Jim Winkler, Forward Merle Brust, Forwardg Dennis Wilhclmi, Center. 49 Seasorfs Scores Minooku Kfiucmkzx NIiIlUOkl1 Nlinooka Mirlcmcmkzn Miuooku xIiI100k21 Mimxoka Nliuooku xIiHO0k2l Minofwkzi Minookzx Milmocmkzx xiillllilkll Minooku Nfinooku N'IiI100k2l Nlinookn SQ'I'l'Il2l 72 Coal City -P7 Oxwvgo P18 xvtlfidlillld 37 Yorkvillm' 'W xvillllillgtilll 69 Pluinfivld 77 Gardnvr 6l Nl'XX'2lTk 43 Oswcgo 39 Ln-mont 57 Yorkvillm- 60 Plainfis-ld .33 Carl Slllldhllfg St. Paul 61 St. Pl'O4'0IJiL1N T6 Plano 63 Newark 83 4 Junior Varsity Front Row, left to right: Jack Phillips, Bob Cherniskv, Jim Davidson John Findlay Steve Hauger, Jim Rushing. PALMER Ml -sh Il Seventh Grade As the seventh chapter in our book of edu- cation begins on September 4, 1956, twenty- four eager boys and girls are ready to face a new school year and a new teacher. First we become acquainted, and organize our Citizenship Club to help our class run more smoothly. Our officers for the first sem- ester are Nfarie Talkington, president, Janet Vaksdal, vice-presidentg Chandra Uorick, sec- retaryg and Keith Flatness as treasurer. Dur- ing the second semester our officers include Ric Gfferman, president, Thomas Geistler, vice-president, Kay Moore, secretary, and Richard Clark, treasurer. W'e enjoyed a Halloween party in our room. Prizes for masks were awarded to Francine Campbell for the funniest mask, to Janet Vaks- dal for the best story book character, and to Fred Singer for the most original mask. It is now November and the seventh grade is putting on a comedy skit, f'The Case of the Nlissing Turkeyf' under the direction of Kay Moore. Also, we may be seen enjoying our skating party with the eighth grade, and Z1 Christmas party before our Christmas vaca- tion begins. As we continue to leaf through the pages we find ourselves in the last half of the chapter. XM' now have a new science course added to our studies. Our Valentine's Day party is a big event for us. We are exchanging valentines and enjoying games and contests in our room, decorated for the event. As we come to the last pages we are looking forward to our summer vacation and wonder- ing what to expect in the next chapter of our book. fhxth After three months of vacationing in outer space the V-6 Rocket landed in Minooka and unloaded twenty-eight boys and girls who were ready to get down to earth and do some real work in the sixth grade. DeVonna Knud- son who had been with us during our first three years of school again joined our class after having attended school in Morris, Illinois, the past two years. This year for the first time we have had a room mother. Mrs. Donald Blair, Nancy's mother, was our room mother, and she made the plans and appointed mothers to plan and attend the various activities during the year. This we enjoyed very much and it was a great help to our teacher. We organized a citizenship club and enjoyed Grade many art activities which included making plaques, murals, baskets, paintings and room decorations. The sixth grade was represented in the basketball games too. This year for the first time Geography and History were studied together as social studies. In doing this we learned more about the rela- tionship of the history and geography of the countries and the effects they have upon each other. Each six weeks we learned at poem and gave a book report. We have had a very profitable and enjoy- able year and are now ready to take off into outer space in the V-7 Rocket which is waiting for us outside the school. 60 Q Q at we L , 5 W 3 'vw N K W .... ,.
