THE SENIOR DI Dear Tom: We were sorry that you were unable to at- tend our tenth annual class reunion, but of course Sophie Konjevich, the Hrst woman presi- dent of the United States, couldnlt spare you from your duties as the ambassador to Ireland. We started from Midway Airport in Chicago. As we boarded the plane, we were delighted to see that Lois jennings was the stewardess for our trip. We were so happy to see her that we didn't mind when she spilled most of our din- ner on us. just as we were getting ready to take off we saw two young men hurrying down the runway waving for the plane to wait, As they got on the plane, we were overjoyed to see that it was joe Guglielmetti and jerry Emmert. joe is nationally famous for his many inventions, such as his automatic potholder. ferry is the star outfielder for the New York Yankees, and he leads the league in getting hit in the head with fly balls. Sitting behind us were foanne Coop and Gordon Marley. joanne is a famous novelist, her latest book being titled The Private Life of a Bubble Dancer. Gordon is a top agent for the FBI, having just recently solved the Who,s Got the Fox mystery. just across from us were Yvonne Ferguson a n d Alice Van Cleave. Yvonne is a top designer in Miami, her newest gown being a strapless model with 'built in Han- nel slacks for chilly evenings. Alice is the head of the mathematics department at the new University of Minooka. Alice always had a good--er--I mean she always liked figures. We had been air-borne for about an hour when the pilot came through, and we were glad to see it was jay Erickson. jay is the leading United Airlines pilot when it comes to being in the most crack-ups. Later, when we landed in New York, we were much elated to see Bev Schimrnel and Pete McMillin waiting to greet us. Bev is writ- ing a lovelorn column for the Chicago Tribune under the name of Harriet Heart Throb, while Pete, besides having a family of eighteen, has for 'the last three years won the Indianapolis '500' ARY We went by cab to the famous Spirit of '55 Nightclub, and waiting there for us was Earl Shearer. Earl, besides being the owner of this great club, is the major stockholder in the mar- ble industry. We had just been seated when two beautiful young ladies bearing the names of Ferne Schimrnel and june Wilhelmi entered, and we happily motioned them to our reserved tables. Ferne is a No. l movie starlet, her latest picture being 'AHcnry Come Home. june is a top recording artist these days, her latest disc being 'SI Gave Dickey a lVIiekey. We heard a car screech to a stop out in front and in it was Hank Sing and Pat Conroy. Hank is the coach of the University of Minooka basketball team which was ranked No. 1 last year-that is No. 1 in Minooka. Pat is presi- dent of a soft drink industry which features the famous Conroy Cola. Pat never touches the stuff himself though- 'ltoo strong, he says. The waiter had just taken our orders when Carol Dixon zoomed in. Carol has been very busy lately as president of the National Society of Hot-Rodders. Right behind Carol were Bar- bara Allen and Patsy Torkelson. Barbara is a successful model these days. Next week she is going to model in the annual horse show. Patsy is the principal of the famous school of temper control, even though she had never been able to pass the course. We were all talking over the good times we had back at good old Minooka High when in came Walt Bradley and Mike Stegman, Walt is a top man at the pentagon these days - he paints the Hag pole. Mike is the Naval Com- mander of the Seventh Fleet-on the lake in Central Park. We 'thought our guest of honor would never arrive but sure enough, in staggered, I mean walked-no I guess he did stagger, well, any- way it was our former favorite teacher Mr. Sampson. Well now that everyone is here, the great reunion may begin. Sorry you couldn't be here, Tom, but we'll write to you later about the occasion. Sincerely, ffrom the tune of the same namej Class of '55 SENIOR AWARDS MOST Rl-:mu-Ls1f:N'r.-xT1v1-1 STUDENTS 'l'ht- most rt-pri-st-ntativc students were chost-n by tht-ir citizt-nship, participation in school activities, sports, social activities and personality. Ricketts The year's activities started in October with a report by Joanne Coop on F.H.A. Camp, which she attended in 'Iuly at Bloomington. U. N. Day was observed by listening to a report ol' what United Nations Day means and playing a game and singing songs. The first week in November was set aside for National F.H.A. YN'eek. An activity in which each girl participated was planned for each day ol' the week. The new members were formally initiated in a candle light service at the end of November. A Christmas party was held in December at talk by our Chapter Mother, Mrs. Sampson. Her topic was Good Grooming for Your Job. Our one big event of the year was the Mother-Daughter Banquet in April. At that time we held installation of the officers for the eoming year. To finance activities we had to raise money. To do this we held a bake sale, sponsored milk sales, and checked coats. The F.H.A. also sold shampoo to get an electric roaster that will be used in the home economics department. The Section I9 Leadership Rally was held in November at Nlinooka. Participating was Jo- anne Coop who was the Section Vice-President. The spring rally was held at Lincoln-Way School in Nlarch with the F.H.A. girls attend- ing. FUTUREF The Minooka Chapter of the F.F.A., as in past years, was very active. John Severson and Gary Hadaway represented our chapter at the annual State Convention held in Springfield, june 8-1 1, 1954. Henry Sing was a member of the State Band which performed for the con- vention. Many of the members exhibited live- stock at the Section Eight Livestock Show held on August 9 in Ottawa. September 19 was the date of the annual tractor rodeo-an exciting event. Alden Erickson drove very skillfully and, as a result, won first place in the F.F.A. division. Other winners were: Gary Hadaway, John Du- vall, Joe Guglielmetti, Leo Winkel, Lenard Ol- son, and Keith Knudson. All of the boys made a good showing of themselves and deserve a lot of credit. ARME RS OF AMERICA The agriculture classes made a number of field trips during the school year. Among the more interesting excursions taken was the trip to the International Livestock Show on Decem- ber 2, 1954. This was the show attended by the frosh-soph agriculture class. They saw all the exhibits and also the horse show. The junior- senior class went to Chicago to see the Ice Show. All the boys had a grand time. Mr. Wilken managed to promote a swimming program for the F.F.A. at the Y.M.C.A. All the boys that went had a good time. New games were tried during the meetings this year. The boys made shuffleboard sets and a dart game in the shop. Some of the boys put on boxing gloves, which proved to be the most active recreation of all. John Findlay entered the annual Section Eight Public Speaking Contest held at Ottawa on March 23. He placed third. The F.F.A. Banquet was held April 13 for the boys and their parents. john Findlay gave his contest speech, and Mr. Wilken's square dance group performed. Project slides were shown. The F.H.A. did a wonderful job serving us. We re- turned the favor by sewing their banquet on April 27. Mr. Wilken made a trip to Europe last sum- mer and brought back many interesting slides and souvenirs. He also told us about the way they live and farm. Altogether, Mr. Wilken and all the boys had a very active and interest- ing year, SEATED: Henry Sing, Paul McMillin. TRACK A completely new minor sport was added to Kankakee. There, the team again developed in Miriookai's program in 1954 that proved to be interesting and active to the participants. Track is an excellent body building activity, and it will form an integral part in the sports program. Three track meets were held last year f- all of them in Minooka. Our team met Wilming- ton twice and Mazon once. Although our team was defeated three times, the team gained valu- able experience that it may use to advantage this year. The team entered the district track meet at 34 experience and had an opportunity to observe the techniques of other athletes. Five returning lettermen carried the Minooka banner this spring. Their names are: Harold Breen, ,lay Erickson, Joseph Breen, john Duvall, and Charles Brown. ' The events that the team participates in arc: The one mile run, one-half mile run, one-quar- ter mile run, 220 yard dash, 100 yard dash, high jump, broad jump, discus, shot put, hurdles. and the one mile relay. SEVENTH GRADE 57 SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADES Since we were studying weather in geography and decided we could learn more by actively reporting the daily weather, we began the school year by establishing a weather station. Some of the boys built barometers, wind direc- tion indicators, and other devices. Each year the school has a magazine drive and a turkey raffle to help defray the cost of the yearbook. This year the seventh and eighth grades ranked first in the magazine drive. Coady Erickson was the high salesman from our room. For winning our reward was a field trip. In early December the class went on a field trip. WR- visited the Illinois Clay Products Co. and the Morris Paper Mill. The trip proved to he educational as well as a great deal of fun. At both locations, guides showed and explained the complete manufacturing process. W'e were given samples of the products of each company. The class held a hobby show in january for the benefit of the March of Dimes. Most of the students exhibited a hobby of some kind. VVe had a stamp collection, a doll collection, a sword collection, a toy horse collection, and many models. All the grade school classes were invited to this show and enjoyed it very much. We had four parties during the year. Our Halloween party was first. Everyone carrie in costume and they were judged in the gym by Mrs. Coady, Mrs. Churchill, and Mr. W'ilken. Kay Holbrook was judged prettiest, Darlene Anderson, the ugliest, and Raymond Clennon, the funniest. Afterward. refreshments were served in our room. Our other three parties were the Christmas party, the Valentine's party, and the weiner roast at the end of the year. XM' exchanged gifts at the Christmas party and gave valentines to each other at the Valentine's party. YM' atc outdoors and played games at the weiner roast. Our class held a skating party at Muffler's skating rink in Morris. YN'e all sold tickets. and the profit we made was used to buy the material to make Christmas presents for our parents, W'e all enjoyed making the Christmas gifts. Some of us made metal craft picturesg and others, wooden articles such as wall shelves and telephone pads. The metal craft pictures rc- quired a great deal of work as the background on these pictures had to be tapped by hand. The wooden articles were varnished six or seven times and polished to a high lustre. Barbara Heap, Glenda Todd, Patty Gambee. and Anita. Santorineos were our cheerleaders. They made their own costumes and developed their own cheers. That they did a good job was indicated by the cheering at the basketball games. The '54-'55 school year was indeed, a fruitful one. Throughout the year we were engaged in many new activities which added to our plea- sure. It is with sadness that we see this year end. ' .. GRADE SCHOOL BASKETBALL There were two divisions of the grade school basketball team again this year-lightweight and heavyweight. Most players found them- selves playing in both divisions at one time or another during the season. There were very few experienced hands, so the fundamental skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting were stressed. Of course, the usual stress was placed on good sportsmanship. The teams were entered in the Desplaines Valley Conference. Both the heavyweight and the lightweight teams ranked fourth in the con- ference. The record for all games played was HEAVYWVEIGHTS lNe They Morris 45 54 Braidwood 18 42 New Lenox 20 40 coal City 29 44 Channahon 17 38 Laraway 30 24 Morris 24 50 Channahon 14 30 Coal City 31 20 Wilmington 30 50 New Lenox l l 31 Plainfield 25 50 Laraway 25 37 Plainfield 22 48 3-10 for the heavyweights and 4-9 for the light- weights. There were thirty boys participating in the basketball program. There were three eighth grade boys on the team. two of whom had no experience prior to this season. The seventh grade had five representatives on the team. The fifth and sixth grades each had an equal repre- sentation with eleven players. This was the first year that we used boys from thc fifth grade. What these boys lacked in experience, they made up in spirit.
