S. 15 ' Zane May 26, 1964 DEAR JAKE, It certainly was a shame you couldn't attend our tenth annual class reunion at The Moulin Rouge,', Paris, France. However, Tom Dorre, head of the De- partment of Conservation, could not persuade the other great hunters to change the opening day of duck season. As you remember, Pierre, the great artist, was present at M. C. H. S. in 54 and painted our class portrait. Upon his departure, he invited us to France for our l964 reunion. Excitement reached its peak as the day drew near. Chanooka's pride and joy is jim Bretschfv new steamboat line. The crowd gathered at the gang plank of his newly christened tug, the U.S.S. Jeanie. Of course, jim named his boat after his beloved wife, the former jean Rushton, one of our old classmates. As the whistle blew the crowd pushed its way forward. Oh-Oh! Collision! There is high society in the crowd. That fabulous Moneybags Moore, starring in the opera, Porkie and Bess, just bumped into Barbara Todd. Martha was awarded the Booby Oscar for portraying that startling character, Porkie. Barbara is now Mrs. George Winkel. They are the co-owners of Georgie Ann's Three Ring Circus. More rings will be added as the family increases. The star performer in this catastrophe is sword-swallowing Suey Ann, whose diet consists of a dozen twelve-inch swords per day. In real life this artist is known as Sue Montgomery. As the boat left the mooring, a shrill cry pierced the air. The man-about-town, Wes Cook, who is known for his many jet convertibles, zoomed up. Late again! Slow Poke. He pushed a button and down came the water wings. Across the water he glided. Oh, this modern age! The group was happy to take in the surrounding sights from the boat, but everyone was happy when the boat trip ended. The next lap of their journey was to be taken on a fast clipper from Chicago. At the airport two more old classmates joined the group. These two were Charlene McEvilly and Bev Orlomoski. Charlene is living alone in her Chicago penthouse now. To the surprise of most of the group, these two are confirmed old maids. Charlene is now the owner of The Dime a Dozen Used Car lot, which specializes in Hudson Convertibles. Her slogan is You wreck 'em and wc'll sell 'em. Bev was visiting Charlene. Her home town is Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Up-and-coming Orlomoski, who has been currently appearing on radio station A-R-G-U-E, is giving Senator McCarthy a run for his money. As everyone was being seated, the stewardess came from within the cabin of the ship, calling her f'hello's.n Who was this shapely figure? None other than Dorothy Wendell, who had reduced. Dot is now down to a trim 110. She made everyone comfortable, and it wasn't long before safety belts were fastened and the ship was going down for ia landing. After the plane bounced down the landing strip, the door of the pilot's cabin jolted open. Who should fall out of the cabin, but Leslie Garnbeef Les had now made his first trans-Atlantic fiight. Everyone scrambled to get his first glimpse of France. It wasn't long before our chartered bus pulled up. There was a wild scramble for seats and away we went. In and out of traffic, our sight seeing bus weaved and zoomed. Confusion in front of the bus drew everyone's attention. It seemed as if a dozen kids were fighting over one piece of candy. The bus driver turned around to see what the commotion was fAs if we couldn't tell -Y a woman driver!l Face looks familiar, hair looks familiar. Oh, no! Marlene Gug- lielmetti. Seems as if Marlene snagged that former M. C. H. S. graduate. The little monster's in the front of the bus were all Marlene's. We stopped in front of the Eiffel Tower to get more views. There was a street photographer, taking pictures of other tourists. We decided to have a group picture taken for future remembrances. The photographer was busy arranging the group for our picture when someone noticed who it was-- Earlene Binkele. They exchanged bits of gossip and then bade us farewell, but not before assuring us that they would meet us again at the reunion party that night. At the hotel reserved for M, C. H. S. graduates we were glad to find Carol Greenwood. She is the owner of the Rue de la Paix, Paris' finest tourist hotel. Carol rang the bell, and her efficient bell-boy appeared. Richie Severson sure looks nice in a blue suit! He came skipping down the stairs whistling his latest tune, f'Blue Bottom Bellsfl He writes songs in his spare time. After we checked our luggage we registered. On the hotel register we noticed a familiar scribble. Looking up from the book we noticed the glamorous Christin De', a famous model, ascending the stairs. She paused for a moment, and everyone was sur- prised to see how joAnn Dollinger had changed. That evening everyone gathered at the Moulin Rouge, which is now owned by Monsieur Gene Winterbottorn. Featured singer in this famous night- club was Mademoiselle Frantwa Szyrnanski. Her favorite selection was Take Me Back to Good Ole Minookef' After she finished singing, out came a line of can-can dancers. The one on the end didn't quite make it and found herself sprawled on the floor. When she picked herself up, we saw it was Lorraine Peterson. just as the party got started, another '54-I celebrity walked in. We couldn't believe our eyes. We thought Miss Holt, our adviser, had forgotten us. Miss Holt told the group that she was attending school to learn how to speak French. She had decided to make a career of teaching French instead of English. The party broke up in the wee hours of the morning. Everyone was sad, thinking that soon they would have to part. Before the party broke up, plans were made to hold their next reunion in five years at Minooka. Sorry you missed it, but we will look forward to seeing you in 1969. The Class of 1955 started their high school days in 1951. We increased and decreased members, finally settling with twenty-four ambitious workers. In September, after we got into the rhythm of school, Mr. Sampson, our class adviser, aided us in selecting officers. The officers elected were: Gordon Murley, president, Lois Jennings, vice- presidentg june Wilhelrni, secretary, Joanne Coop, treasurer. Ferne Scbinimel and Henry Sing were our representatives in the Student Council. Gordon Nlurley, Earl Shearer, Hcnry Sing and Tom Kemp were on the varsity basketball squad. Jay Erickson and Joe Guglielmetti were on the junior varsity squad. june Wilhebni and Lois Jennings were chosen as cheerleaders. Advanced band members were: Joanne Coop, Earl Shearer, Henry Sing, Edward Stegman, and Darlene Enger. Beginning band members were Carol Dixon, and jay Erickson. Our class was also well represented in F. H. A., F. F. A., and chorus. November 13, 1953, was an exciting day for us. That evening we presented our Junior play. The title of the play was You Cdllif Kim Caroline. The main characters were: Cordon Murley as joe: june Wilhelmi as Caroline: Carol Dixon as Ma Rand, and Sophie Konjcvich as Susie, How excited we were when we ordered our class rings in November! What a thrill was ours when the rings came after Christmas. Of course the big project for the year was sponsoring the 1954 Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Sale of Christmas greetings of various kinds gave us a good start toward financing the enter- prise. Profits from operating the refreshment con- cession at athletic events increased our balance so that we were able to carry out our plans. This event was truly the gala occasion of the year. The yearbook is financed through the sale of maga- zine subscriptions at the beginning of the year, the sale of turkey raffle tickets at Thanksgiving time, and the sale of advertising space to merchants in Joliet, Morris, Minooka, and Channahon. The Seniors do most of the plan- ning with the aid of the adviser. The first purpose of the annual is to provide a storehouse of memories for the alumni. The second purpose is to show the educational ad- vances of various departments of the school. Nearly everyone helps in one way or another to publish the annual. 1 5 I , g s-3: ' inn : ' if ,Q ' A , U i :ff .EEF STANDING: Betty Bordt-rs, Carol Grt-vnwood, Charlt-nv Mclilvilly, Dorothy Wvndcll, Marla-nc Gug- lit-hnt-tti, Gvruld Eniinrrt, Fmrirvs Slyinunski, jo Ann Dollingvr, Barbara Todd. A., which is chartered by the national organization of the Future Home- makers of America. In the past year the membership of our chapter was sixty girls. In order to become a member each girl must have completed one semester of work in home economics. Two meetings are held each month-one business meeting and one educational-social meeting. The motto of the organization is c'Toward New Horizonsng the flower, a red rose, and the colors, red and white. The eight purposes of the F. H. A. are: Qlj To promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of home- making. f2j To emphasize the importance of wor- thy home membership. ffij To encourage democracy in home and community life. I I f4j To work for good home and family life for all. CSD To promote international good will. f6j To foster the development of creative leadership in home and community life. UQ To further interest in home economics. CSJ To provide wholesome individual and group recreation. The officers for the year 1953-1954 were: Suzanne Montgomery, president, Jane Brew- ster, vice-president, Marlene Cuglielmetti, sec- retaryg Barbara Allen, treasurer, Joanne Coop, finance chairman, Patsy Torkelson, welfare and service chairman, Earlene Binkele, reporter, Aileen Torkelson, publicity chairman, Sophie Konjevich, parliamentariang Lorraine Peterson, degrees chairman, Jean Rushton, song leader, Mrs. Eneix, chapter mother, and Mrs. Janice Sampson, adviser. The year's activities began in Oetoher when six girls went to the F. H. A. Leadership meet- ing in Morris. The Hrst week in November was set aside for National F. H. A. Week. An activity was plan- ned for each day of the week. Informal initia- tion elimaxed this project. For U. N. Day the chapter sang songs and played games from different countries. A Christmas party for which the girls ex- changed names for gifts was held in the Home Eeonomies room. The girls held their annual Klother-l7aughter Banquet in February. The new members were formally initiated in a candle lighting ceremony. In April, we honored our Fathers at Daddy Date Night. This year each girl received names for a pen pal from overseas. In order to enjoy all these social events, the organization must raise funds. Our projects in- cluded: NIilk sales, coat checking at the basket- hall games, a bake sale and the selling of sham- poo. The F. H. A. received six cherry-red pitch- ers. for selling the shampoo. These pitchers were presented as a gift to the Home Economics department. To end the year a luncheon was served to help prospective Freshman girls get acquainted with high school. Wee lvlinooka High School was fortunate in hav- ing ai Boys' Glee Club again, this year, after last year's inactivity. The group was organized to provide ll co-curricular activity for male mem- bers of the student body who had an intense in- terest in singing. The main event of the year for the club was to be the annual Christmas Pageant. However, the principal singer of the group became ill, and the opportunity to show the people of the community the progress of the group had to be passed up. lNe sincerely hope that next year we will have opportunities to sing before an audience. The Indians scalped twenty-one foes, while being scalped four times during the entire season. The Indians acquired eight scalps under their belts, before being downed by Coal City in the Gardner Tournament. The Indians went on another spree and gathered nine more wins, before being defeated by Coal City in a regu- larly scheduled game. The Indians made a clean sweep of confer- ence play 'by winning the conference tourna- mcnt and also ended up as the high team in regular conference play with seven wins against one defeat. They brought home another trophy to add to our trophy case by grasping third place in the Holiday Tournament at Gardner. In district play, the team defeated Serena, but lost to Somonauk the next night. This marked the end of the playing careers of four seniors -W Richie Severson, Wes Cook, Jim Bretsch, and Eugene Wlinterbottom. These boys will be hard to replace next year, but their spirit and determination will live on to inspire other boys to live up to the standards they have set. The Papooses followed the example of the varsity and ended up with a record of seven- teen wins against four losses. They added several trophies to the school's trophy case winning First in regular conference play. They went un- defeated in the conference, and took second place in the Conference tournament. For individual honors, Richie Severson won the varsity free throw trophy with a .684 aver- age. Charles Brown won the new free throw trophy which was added this year in honor of Robert Rushton. This trophy goes to the highest shooter of free throws on the B-Squad. Charles won it with a .654 average. The basketball season would not have been a success if the team and the cheerleaders had not had the support of the student body and the community. They wish to thank everyone. arf' it JS Q ' x ii- - A ' A uv '- u'4nl 'l 2.3 'ni' Siam iw Mg ' -H-'F' N ' 'Zvi fn ' 41 l,,5 KK 9 iw! ' f Q-,059 fx' ,asa 4. We had a new teacher and two new students, Patricia Gambee and Thomas Robbins, in the seventh grade. Our class was moved to a room in the new building. Accepting the challenge that the new school work presented, we worked hard and digested a maximum amount of the Three R's. Eight of us were on the honor roll, and Jim Winkler placed second in the Corn Festival spelldown at Morris. Honors went to Virginia Wallin for high Turkey Raffle sales in the eighth grade and Joyce Murley in the seventh grade. Winners in the Magazine Drive were: Virginia Wallin in the eighth grade and Richard Feeney in the seventh grade. Seventh and eighth grade representatives on the basketball team were: Alden Erickson, Jim Winkler, Larry Todd, Don McHugh, Tom Par- ris, Eddie Feeney, and Richard Feeney. The team was supported by loud and ample cheer- ing led by Cheerleaders Lois Severson, Joanne Patten, Vada Knudson, and June Jennings. Our class gets along very well. We were happy to have Thomas Geistler from the Falcomer School, Chicago, Illinois, and Emelia DeCicco from the Cornell Consolidated School of Cornell, Illinois, join our class. On October 13, 1953, we had our pictures taken. We were all frightened. You know what that photographt-r's camera means. The pictures were taken in the projection room. During October, the class helped with the all-school carnival by sponsoring the Jewelry Booth. We all had fun polishing, collecting, and cleaning jewelry. Mrs. Shields repaired it, and mounted the pieces on large show cards. Our class practiced money changing. We all worked in our booth. The profit was about 9,545.00 for the Music Boosters. Our first party fun for the year began with our Halloween party. There we saw Charlene Hancock as the prettiest, james Breen as the ugliest, and Marie Talkington as the funniest in the costume dress. Following the judging we all paraded about town with the high-school band leading us. Upon our return to school, we had our party and refreshments. During Education W'eek in November we were hosts to many of our mothers and other visitors. The class helped to sell Turkey Raffle tickets. Everyone said he had fun. Kay Moore must have enjoyed herself, for she sold ten books and won the silver dollar. Marie Talkington won the turkey. In November, the class members presented an assembly program for the grade school, high school, and the faculty, Chandra Dorick, program chairman, chose the characters. The scene was a home on Thanksgiving Day. The Characters were: Mother, Kay Moore, Father, Walter Heap, Joyce, Chandra Dorick, joe, Dick Coyne, Jennie jones, janet Vaksdalg jimmy, Dick Clark, Giuseppi, Larry Dwyer, Grandma Poppins, Charlotte Hentze, Mr. Hig- gins, Rex Siron, Mr. and Mrs. Woodberry, Keith Flatness and Marie Talkington, Philip, Tom Geistler, Cecil, Ronnie Williamson, Leader of the chorus, Linda Link, announcer. Emelia. DiCicco, Chorus, the class. The Christmas play was Reindeer's Di- lemma. Mrs. Shields and the class wrote the script for the play. Karen Sandstrom played our music for us. Various art projects were carried on during the year. We made clothes-pin people and dressed them in crepe paper. We did tempera spray painting of autumn leaves and Christmas cards. Our gifts for Christmas were candle hold- ers made from hedge balls painted silver. We made a tray for them from heavy paper, lace paper, and pine boughs. We made Valentine pictures for gifts, and we did many other things. Mr. Siron instructed the boys one period each week in basketball. During this period the girls enjoyed a variety of projects. 'Our club work was a new and interesting experience to us. Our officers did a fine job. As the year is over, we realize that we have had fun working and playing together through- out the year 1953-1954. it ao- fo- K X ,y tr if 19- ,lf I 1 . , H . - ' Qs If I 1 , 5 V: ' . N1.l11Ilu'i, N R , L The third grade began with eleven girls and seventeen boys. All had been in school in Mi- nooka before, therefore. we had no new friends to greet. Our class membership remained at twenty-eight throughout the year. Our days were busy from the beginning of the school year with new subjects and many new books. We started work very soon on our program for the Halloween festival. While Diana Littlefair read parts of The Song of Hinzeatlmu the rest of us acted the parts, We sang and danced. All of us made our own In- dian headdrt-ss. October was an anxious month, as we could hardly wait for our first party. VVhen the great day arrived we put our Halloween costumes on at noon and waited impatiently to go to the gynl to be judged. jackie McCoy, Eddie Ander- son, and Nicky Santorineos won the prizes. Whcn the judging was over, Mr. McAllister and the band led us on a parade downtown. Since it was a beautiful, sunny day, the streets were crowded with people watching us. When we returned to the school. we had our party. At the Christmas program we were wooden 741m soldiers and dolls. While we sang Thr Parade of the Wooden Soldifrsi' we came to life and had a real live parade. Even the dolls marched while the soldiers rested. The day before Christmas vacation we had our gift exchange and party. Our tree was so pretty, decorated with the ornaments we had made ourselves. We were glad to start our vacation, but we didn't like the day to end so quickly. Our next party was at Valentine's time. We had many, many valentines. We played post- man and put the valentines in each others mail boxes. While the boys went to the gym to practice basketball with Mr. Siron, the girls learned folk dances. Sometimes we used the record player and sometimes the piano. Tuesday was truly a day to look forward to and enjoy. We mustn't fail to mention the rhythm band. It was fun to listen to the music and to learn to play our parts well. Our year has been a happy one. We've worked hard and played hard. Now we're eagerly looking forward to next fall and a new grade to explore. JC U 5 'af' ' 31- T: L - ' Ls' , , I , M4 il f. .
