yf i s DECA AFS Written by Lena Stenseng a foreign exchange student from Norway: As a foreign exchange student I have experienced many new things. The first was speaking a different language all the time, and hearing it too. Everything was so much bigger than in my home country. I couldn't believe it I People eat so many strange things, like doughnuts for breakfast, when I eat doughnuts I eat them for lunch. The first day of school was terrible, the school was so big and, there were so many people. After a while things started to settle in and, I knew I wanted to stay here, at least for the rest of the year. ESL ESL ESL English as a Second Language ... go to school in a language you don't understand ... listen all day to people who can't answer you in your own language ... read a newspaper or announcement written in an alphabet very different from your own! These were the kinds of experiences ESL students had every day. These students came from many different countries to live in the United States and some came because of business reasons-their parents were sent to the United States. Most came because of war or Communism in their home. Some came with relatives. Most have lost relatives and homes. ESL teaches English. American culture, and hope.
