Tonka: a mecca for foreign students tin cans taking over. fa ., . ' K. Swanson, B. De Witt, K. Abel, and B. Lewis, bottle drive workers, find $ 51 h; J Foreign students P Ferry, M. Ovares, W. DeHaan, K Pope, C Thorn- blad, G. Collivadino sitting with their American hosts D. Huskins, D. Abramson, L. Smith, R Hogue. Things go better with Coke was a good start to the AFS bottle drive, one of the many fund-raising projects of the year. Other activities ranged from cooking pan- cakes and sausages for Holland Week; painting deco- rations and making cookies and punch for the Christ- mas dance; the selling of fruit cake; a bake sale; the continuation of the Penny Wednesdays; the spaghetti dinner; and planning for the Mardi Gras. All these led to an enjoyable year at Minnetonka for the foreign students, who were in abundance. These included the three A.F.S. students - Maria Elena Ovares, whose home is in Costa Rica; Kirsten Pope, a South African; and Willem Bierens DeHaan, from the Netherlands. These A.F.S.ers, whose countries differ greatly from each other, spent their year working in close co-operation with each other and found their year at Minnetonka a stimulating and unforgettable experience. And they discovered that countries differ, people do not. The two Rotary Club students were Graciela Colliva- dino from Argentina and Claes Thornblad, who lives in Sweden. Graciela and Claes lived with three different families during their stay here. Philippe Ferry, a Frenchman, came to Minnetonka to improve his Eng- lish and also to make friends. Being away from home for a year proved to be for all of them, at times, trau- matic, but unbelievably mind-opening. I bet my wooden shoes can beat your Red Ball Jets! yells Willem to his brother Dave.
