The students of Minnetonka have established traditions and set standards in scholastic, cultural, and athletic endeavors and in other extra curriculars ranging from speech activities to wrestling. As students we have gained knowledge, understand- ing, responsibility, and lasting friendships. Our school life has been enriched even more by the opportunity of sharing what we have with a foreign student. The presence of a friend from another land has taught us the true meaning of brotherhood. We have come to know that people the world over are just as eager as we are to obtain knowledge It is interesting to see the impression of our school thatis obtained by a newcomer and through his letters wrxtten home we are able to see what the school has meant to him 'Www waving: 54 .Z I 9 X '97 wie , +'f .frv,,l, iid an xx-:Nye ' 1 gl s, H-WWW W EJHWMQ-,bkx ,108-ff an-9' f ' 'fftfamf' li'-we '54 f v I 4 We:-apsr www ugly we as XM WF5'v,,,,. Zofeacfaaazoffccm There s a hard road ahead thought many a Junior as the school year of 52 53 rolled into view To begin with we were entering a brand new school building We were coming from Excelsior and Deep haven and we were being Joined by many from out side the district In addition to the task of getting acquainted with one another we were faced with the normal duties which concern every Junior class As the first days of school passed the road began to stretch ahead a broad smooth highway along which we moved a united class On September 22 we held our first class meeting during which we chose Tom Smith Dennis Andrada, Marlin Dalbec Frances Wutala and Sharon Anderson as our prest dent vice president secretary treasurer and his torian respectively Like all Junior classes we assumed responsibility for the annual Junior Senior Prom With coffers sad ly lacking capital requisite for this undertaking our first money raising project the magazine sale was inaugurated Outstanding salesmen were Mike Herz and Lester Koehnen Together they sold over S300 worth of subscriptions Following the magazine sale the play cast began to get their production MEN ARE LIKE STREETCARS into shape With the money from the magazine sale and the class play plus returns from dances and concession stands we were able to meet Prom expenses with little trouble As the year progressed we held numerous class meetings in an effort to plan for the Prom select class rings and take care ofbusiness in general Then in April we elected Katy French Fran Wntala and Tom Smith to Girls and Boys States With the coming of spring the Prom committees began to make final arrangements and work out last minute details. Moonlight and Roses was selected as the theme for the Prom and Les Williams was hired to furnish the dance music On Thursday May '7 the Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the Minnetonka High School lunchroom. Highlight of the evening was speaker Al Clague with his endless supply of jokes. The dance was held the following evening in the Automobile Club With the Prom over the days passed quickly ln spite of the operetta track meets baseball games band trips and other activities we managed to take time out for final exams. At last school was over and we could look back on a very successful and pleasant year as the first juniors of Minnetonka High When the doors of Minnetonka were opened for the second year, some five hundred students swarmed into the building led by one hundred twenty-six seniors After the excitement of seeing old friends teach- ers and classrooms subsided we set ourselves to the task of electing class officers for a new term. Tom Smith repeated as president, and Masasinge fPanchol Beman was voted vice-president, and Katy Lou French, Marce Burger, and Dick Parks were named treasurer. secretary, and historian. Z na-I OFFICERS Dick Parks, Masasrnge Beman Marcella Ber ger Tom Smith Katy French Our initial project of the year was the football homecoming which was scheduled for October 16 Edina was to be our opponent on the gridiron and with their colors in mind we chose Tee off on the Green as our war cry Joanne Johnson was elected queen and her attendants were Fran Wirtala Jackie Fink Pat Ernst Katy French and Ioan Sundberg De spite the fact that our Skippers were swamped by the Green Wave the spirits of the M H S students remained high and dry and the whole affair was a success We seniors were the best dressed students in school on the 27th and 28th of October Haga Studios was on hand to take senior pictures and everyone con- cerned did his best to look sharp Records show that as a class we were above aver- age scholastically We can look back on that record as an indication that we had a good teaching staff to guide us With the coming of spring all thoughts of school seemed to cease as our minds underwent their annual spring changeover Visions of the senior trip the prom and graduation were foremost in the minds of nearly all seniors As the final weeks slipped by excitement and tension began torise as we prepared for the Prom and finals We ll long remember the mad scramble into Minneapolis for tuxes formals and hairdos- and who will forget that sleepy Saturday following the big night. At last. the evening of June 4th arrived. and we became the second class to graduate from Minne- tonka High. I ' 4 ' WILLIAM AHLERS MSCI P-IHX' Says: 'Forget that stuff . This year's squad has a great deal of potential and a real determination to do their job. The squad has been slightly hindered by a lack of height that seems so essential to a basketballteam. The boys have gained a great deal of experience through a full season of many games with B squads of other Lake conference schools. They have always shown the best sportsmanship and cooperation with their teammates and opponents and have made enough progress through the season to give us hope for the fu- ture. All of the boys will be back next season and will help to bolster the senior squad. .......,.........26DeLaSalle ..........,.35Washburn .............23Wayzata .......20St.LouisPark 36Edina ...., .......... 3 3Hopkins ............27l-lutchlnson . . . ..... .... 3 5 Robbinsdale Minnetonka Minnetonka Minnetonka Minnetonka Minnetonka Minnetonka Minnetonka Minnetonka 43 49 34 31 37 36 34 32 . 3lMound .. ....... ........ 1 9Wayzata 39 St. Louis Park .......30Edina .......61Hopkins .. ...30Robbinsda1e . ..... ............ 2 2 Blake . . . 34 Willmar First row R Poeschel T Bauman J Larson R Thimsen R Carpenter J Wang Second row Coach Baker L Smieja C Kollmeyer F Quandt I Hesse B Ambrose P Wilson Coach Christ Mr. Anderson lntramur al Director 0 The intramural program has been improved and enlarged to include such sports as football, basketball, table tennis, track, and baseball. All through the year the band has enlivened the pep fests and aroused Minnetonkan spirits at the football and basketball games. The more serious side of the band's practicing was done in preparation for the three concerts given in the fall, winter, and spring. A pleasing variety was added to these concerts by the performances of soloists such as Mary Anderson, on the marimba, Barb Schwartz, cornetists, and Carol Moline, on the saxophone. The ensembles such as the two clarinet quartets also contri- buted much to these concerts by their performances. One of the biggest musical days of the year was the day of the District 7 Band Festival which was held at Minnetonka High School. Bands from Excelsior and Deephavenjunior High Schools, from Groveland School, and from Minnetonka High School participated. Each band played several numbers. The Excelsiorlunior High School Chorus and the Folk Dancers from the Deepha- ven fifth and sixth grades also performed. The climax CLARINET OUARTET: J. Borgen, J. Rippetoe, D. Taylor, S. Hein. rv. The Lake Conference Band Festival was held this year at Edina High School. Those who received A ratings at this event went on to compete at the State Band Festival at the University. Following a good neighbor policy, the band traveled to Winona, Minnesota, where mixing business with pleasure they played a concert at Winona Senior High School in addition to visiting places of interest in the city. Witha view to self-improvement the members of the band established a council, which has representatives from each class, to serve as a governing body making rules and enforcing them. The activities of the band don't end when school closes in June. Throughout the summer the band will serve the community with its summer concerts and its participation in such celebrations as the Minneapolis Aquetennial, the Hopkins Raspberry Festival, and the Memorial Day Program. Minnetonka High School students showed their desire to be part of this universal language in that over nine- ty people tried out for chorus. From this number, seventy members were chosen by the director, Mr. Ray- mond Minkler. In the fall a Thanksgiving concert based on the theme of praise and thanksgiving was presented. The Christ- mas concert had as a climax the 'Hallelujah Chorus 9- 1 -v from I-Iandel's Messiah, Soloists at this concert were Reo Fronius and June Collings singing arias from The Messiah. ln the spring of '53 the chorus gave an operetta en- titled The Fortune Te11er by Victor Herbert. The imaginary kingdom of Romany was the setting for this musical story of gypsies, ballerinas, and soldiers. From the chorus a girls triple trio and boys octette were selected.
