'UiJlV - MA lose YIYUDII MINNETONKA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL EXCELSIOR, MINNESOTA 1953 Because We feel that we owe much to those who have made this school possible, we dedicate the first Voyageur to the taxpayers, workmen, architects, schoolboard, and faculty. The Minnetonka School District 7 was organized March 15, 1949, by a vote of the people, 1934 votes against 279. Six school districts complete this merger (Clear Springs, Deephaven, Excelsior, Groveland, Minnewashta and Tonka Bay). The site for the new Minnetonka Senior High School was chosen and purchased on October 11, 1949. Work began on this new high school on April 11, 1950. The first student body occupied the building September 1, 1952. This is the beginning of a great new era. The students who pass through 'Tonka's halls during the following years will, we are sure, come to love and appreciate this school and will make their years at Minnetonka a high point in their lives. , 2 LEFT TO RIGHT: H. I. Larson Dr. R. Froid W. O. Nilsen Dean Schweickhard C. Bissell MINNETONKA SCHOOL DEDICATION OPES HOUSE 4 During the three years a student spends in the Minnetonka Senior High School, he will acquire a great deal of useful knowledge. But his education will not really be well rounded unless he also develops the ati-tude which we associate with good citizenship. In other words, as a result of a student' s experiences in the Minnetonka Senior High School, he should behave (or act) differently all his life. His senior high school experience should enable him to lead a more satisfying personal life and to assume his responsibilities as a citizen with more intelligence and more devotion. The members of our board of education, faculty, and community are proud and pleased to present to you students this magnificent building. It is yours to keep, use and maintain. Make yourselves worthy of their confidence ! Your Superintendent of Schools William O. Nilsen We are pleased to present the VOYAGEUR as a record of the activities in our school. This book will make it possible to recall in future years many happy days spent in the Minnetonka High School. We have a new building that was planned and built to serve the pupils of this area in a very functional way, allowing for changes that progress may dictate. When a new school is formed many adjustments have to be made and the student body being proud of the facilities available, have been working together to create a wonderful spirit of co-operation. The first big event of the year was an excursion to Minneapolis where they toured the Ford Plant, the Museum of Natural History, Ives Ice Cream, and Walker Art. The trip was climaxed by a picnic at Minnehaha Falls. The class was always well represented at school activities, especially the dances given by the upper classmen. As juniors the class was cut to thirty-five with the exodus of Long Lake students to Orono. The most frequent money-making projects were the dances, the Harvest Moon dance being the most successful. The junior class play, Inner Willy was presented November 7 under the direction of Mrs. Helgeson and Mrs. Primrose. During the spring of the year Shirley Kinney was chosen as delegate to Girls' State and Clark Wilhelm and Don Barnes were selected for the National Honor Society. May,with the Prom, graduation decorations, and final tests came quickly. The Prom was held at the Automobile Club and climaxed a successful year of hard work. As the year ended, the class looked forward to being seniors at the new Minnetonka High School. Excelsior’s portion of theClass of '53 started on the road to graduation in September 1949, as they entered their sophomore year with an enrollment of seventy-five. Foreseeing the job of putting on the Junior-Senior Prom the next year, the class held numerous candy sales. One year older, the Class of 53 entered their junior year with$100 and proceeded to earn the rest of the Prom funds through the Curtis Magazine sales. With President Gary Marx at the helm the juniors tackled many other activities, including the annual Junior Class Play. On November 2 a cast of thirteen staged a three-act comedy entitled Mother Does the Talking , under the direction of Miss Olga Huebner. During the first part of the year, the class of '53 elected Judy Preston and Clif Olds as representatives to Girls’ and Boys' State. In May.Clif Olds. Betty Bohnam, Jane Haik, and Judy Preston were accepted into the ranks of the National Honor Society. Finally, the big day of the Prom rallied a-roundand as the music of Les Williams filled the Minneapolis Automobile Club, the Annual Junior-Senior Prom got off to a continental start with its theme, Paris in the Spring . Decorations for the graduation was the final entry on the busy schedule of 1952, and then -- dreams of a new high school and some regrets at leaving the old. Minnetonka's Class of '53 entered their senior year in a rather rare position; everything they did was a first. And, as a first of firsts, the seniors held their initial class meeting for the purpose of organizing the group and of electing officers for the coming year. October 21 was the date set for the '52 Homecoming, Blue Moon was the chosen theme, Lee Reifenberger was elected the queen, and Tonka's colors -- blue and white — set the decorative atmosphere. The class chose Onward Ever. Backward Never as their motto; kelly green and white as their colors; and the red carnation as their flower. Haga Studios was their selected photographer. In January these seniors took college aptitude exams and the boys were interviewed by a representative of the Armed Forces Reserve. The senior girls put on a style show in February and in March the high light of the month was an all-day trip to visit the Fairbault Institute for the Feeble-minded. The first Minnetonka Senior Class Play was given in April. May, the biggest month and the last month for the first graduating class of the Minnetonka High! The prom and the operetta past, the year was climaxed with the brief moment, graduation. 23 JUNIORS MARLIN DALBEC Secretary CLASS OFFICERS DENNIS ANDRADA Vice-president SHARON ANDERSON Historian TOM SMITH President FRANCES WIITALA Treasurer The first junior class of Minnetonka High took their places in the classrooms on September 2, 1952. The election of the Junior class officers was held September 22, at the first class meeting. They were as follows: Tom Smith, president; Dennis Andrada, vice-president; Marlin Dalbec, secretary; Frances Wiitala, treasurer; and Sharon Anderson, historian. President Tom Smith outlined the events of the coming year. The first date on the agenda, September 29, was set for the selection of class rings. Then on October 7, heading the list of the money making projects for the class, came the magazine sale. One month later the class presented Men Are Like Streetcars as the first in what will be an annual production by the juniors. Then as basketball season rolled around the juniors swung into action serving refreshments at all home games. The money raised in these activities, as well as that from the dances sponsored by the class went to pay for the first Prom of M.H.S. 24 William Ahlers Virginia Alexander Arthur Anderson Sharon Anderson Dennis Andrada Victor Arnold George Batzli Elizabeth Bauman Masasinge Beman Harry Benson Marcella Berger Mary Elizabeth Berry Susan Blodgett Donald Borey James Borgen Lois Brehmer Bob Brooking Robert Bruce Richard Cable Ronald Carperter Donald Carruth Sarah Castle Darlene Chute June Collings Michael Comer Marlin Dalbec Audrey Davis Darrell Dearstyne Richard Dimon Nancy Donlin Joan Doub Marietta Edstrom James Egan Patricia Ernst Robert Evans Kathryn Farnham Michael Ferrin James Fillbrandt Jacquelyn Fink Catherine French Reginald Frost Jean Gendreau Carolyn Graham Richard Graham Sharon Graham 25 kI ki l A Ok. Coach Christ says: In our first year of football at Minnetonka we started with an unknown, untried squad. With the loss of the '51 graduates, we came into the ne school with a rebuilding job onoi.r hands. The squad responded to the challenge. They worked lonj;, hard hours before school started in the fall. We felt that by tie season's end we had accomplished the goal set, to work for gocd school spirit and winning teams. Although we did not win as muci as we had hoped, we felt a good start was made. The squad spirit lasted a.I season, a lot of which was due to some good leadership from the co-captains, Marx and Bergren. We are looking forward to more and better Tonka foo ball. Coach Eliason says: There are a great many events that will never pass from my memory concerning the 1952 football season. In general I would say that our season was highly successful for I did not think we would win a single conference game. The main reasons for our success were the excellent coaching by Coach Christ, and the fine playing of the seniors. 34 Conga line ’’onka T ' t Z MINNETONKA 6-7 MOuno MINNETONKA H-33 HOPK g 20-6 R0B8INSDALC TO 37-0 S y. •« £°'n o 3a sT Detour! Even against the strength of the Lake Conference this year, the boys, through tremendous team spirit, did a commendable job. Co-captains Don Barnes and Jim Zakeriasen provided excellent leadership, making the task of organizing a good team easier. Bob Donovan and Tom Smith, the other lettermen who reported, showed marked improvement as the season progressed. Theseboys along with DonCar-ruth, John Gray, Junior Koch, Nils Peterson, Reed Noble, and Don Koch made up our first Skipper team. These young men have left a mark for other Tonka teams to shoot at and improve on; it can be done if there is a desire to do so. Every member of our student body must have this desire and every boy who plays on the Skipper team must feel that he is playing for a fine school and the best student body. We v 1 certainly miss our graduating seniors; here's thanking them for the! - .ribution to this first season. Coach Lokken 39 CO-C APT AIMS J. Zakariasen D. Bames R. Donovaa T. Smith R. Noble N. Bowling Boys Champions Mike Holden Nile Runge Julius Trick Ari Fredricson Larry Carr Bowling at Minnetonka rose out of the interests of students. Originally the 90 students who signed up divided into 17 teams that bowled mainly for the sport of it. Lilac Lanes was the scene of operations and every Monday found the bowlers headed in that direction. This first season lasted until Christmas at which time they reorganized and had eight teams continue through February. When the dust cleared away, Ted Olin and Larry Carr had the highest scores for the boys with 190 and 178 respectively and Kathy Anderson with 172 squeezed by Judy Schroeder with 171 for the honor of leading the girls. Instructor Band Minnetonka's High School Band, on of the most active organizations in th school, has presented three seasonal concerts and was host to the district band festival. In addition to providing the music for all of the various school activities --home basketball games, pep-fests, and dedication service -- they played host to the Lake Conference Band Contest. Nine of the band members were picked for the All Conference Band. Among them are: Betty Bonham, Jacqueline Fink, Jim Bor-gen, Nile Runge, Carol Moline, Quintin Johnson, Wally Besser, Peter Tkach, and Clif Olds. The band is also represented by its many instrumental groups, shown on the pages to follow. The organization rounded off its year with the annual band trip. FRONT ROW: N. Donlin, P. Tesch, J. Fink.
