L. 2 4 5 5 6 2 7 HIGHLIGHTS Center Rod Zimmerman of Herman and guard Al Santwire of Mahnomen were named to co-captain the 1959-60 basketball Dragons. Most valuable player honors for the 1958-59 season went to guard Denny Anderson of Moorhead, a former Moor- head State College High athlete. Senior lettermen included Sherm Moe, Denny Anderson and Gene Goedel. Junior recipients were Dale Champ, Bob Pornmerenke and Rod Zimmerman. M winners as sophomores were Al Santwire and Darrel Mack. Al Shogren and jim Nagel received varsity letters in their Hrst collegiate season. Sherm Moe was named to the eight- man Northern State College Conference all-star team. It was the second year Moe received first team honors. Rod Zimmerman was given honorable men- tion. A plane trip to Macomb, Ill., to play strong Western Illinois was the first trip by air of any Dragon athletic team in the school's history. Moorhead State played opposition from Canada, North and South Da- kota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Missouri during the 1958-59 season. Rod Zimmerman set a one game single scoring high of 40 points at Winona against the Warriors. His 40- point output broke the previous high of 39 held by teammate Sherm Moe in the 1957-58 season against Mayville State Teachers. Despite missing six games, Sherm Moe came within 54 points of setting an all- time Dragon career scoring mark. Moe finished four years of play with 1,284 points to rank close behind john Tor- gerson's record high of 1,887. At left: Al Santwire, sophomore guard, drives in for a lay-up. A1 has played guard for the Dragons for two years, and he will often break through for that needed basket. Below: Rod Zimmerman, big center for MS, scores two more against Mayville. Rod has been a leading scorer for MS in addition to being the leading rebounder. Mack's shot is blocked as Coedel rushes in for a rebound. This game was against Superior. Note the fans at the side- lines. The cheering of the fans and the leadership of the cheerleaders were big factors in many of MS's victories. We all agree that team skill and student encouragement are vital factors in all athletic contests. 101 ,A x Above: Zimmennan shows his skill in rebounding. Big Rod leaps high above his opponents as the ball goes toward the basket. In this shot, Rod was ready as the ball missed its target. Upper right: Goedel drives in for a shot against St. Cloud State. Coming in for the rebound is Al Shogren, but this time no help is needed. Row 1: Dave Montplaisir, Ron Filipy, Ron fTobyJ Horn, Blaine Sivertson and Dick Lasch. Row 2: Ron Wiger, john Kjere, Ed Arne- son, Henry Hettwer, Don Conn and Coach Bill Garland. Wrestling When Ron Wiger puts his 270 pounds to work, it's troublesome for any opponent. Wi- ger Hnished fourth in the NAIA and runner-up in the heavyweight division in the conference, despite being just a freshman. The Moorhead prepster had a 20-7 overall racord, the most wins of any Dragon. Ed Arneson, standout freshman wrestler from Glenwood, works over one of his opponents. Arne- son finished with a 14-4 overall record. Concluding two years of captaincy in wrestling this past season was Henry Hett- wer of Carrington, N. D. Hettwer Enished fourth in the NAIA and second in the confer- ence. Wrestling in his final season, Hettwer finished with a highly respectable 14-8 overall mark. Dragon wrestling captain Henry Hettwer gives his all in one of his 191-pound matches. Review Bill Garland, in his first year as Moorhead State wrestling coach, directed the grapplers to the school's best record in seven years that the sport has been a part of the athletic program. The Dragons under Garland finished dual competition with an 8-8-1 record, were co-champs with Bemidji State in the Moorhead State Invitational and had four members in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' wrestling meet. Taking part in the NAIA meet were Ron Wiger, Henry Hettwer, Dave Montplaisir, and Rufus Bankole. Wiger was named the Dragons, most valuable wrestler and Blaine Silvertson was tabbed the most improved. Wiger, who finished with a 20-7 mark overall and 10-2 in dual competition, registered 16 pins in his 20 wins. Silvertson came a long way during the season, and like Wiger is only a freshman. Wrestling prospects for the future look good with an outstanding crop of young wrestlers. 104 In the 157-pound division the Dragons had a top per- former in Dave Montplaisir. He finished with a 15-6 over- all mark, the third best on the team. Golf Row 1: Richard Lasch, Guy Varty. Row 2: Dr. P. Smith, Larry Perkins, Douglas Koepsell, Lloyd Thorson, Lyle Hornbacher. The wins included defending co-champion Winona State foneej and NDAC ftwicej. The clean sweep over the Bison gave MSC the intercity title. Gordy Grossman was the only veteran starter for coach Larry MacLeod. We at MSC are lucky to have such a man as Mr. Delmar Hansen to direct the plays, stu- dents who are capable to bring reality to the stage, and many other students who assist in making a good play possible. In short, it takes a lot of ability and teamwork to produce a success. We have had three such successes in the field of drama this year at MSC. -.Qr.g..,1,, of . w f,,,f . 9 . L . . All are tense and excited as the curtain goes up for the Hrst time, but nerves soon relax as the play gets underway. The audience is pleased with the Hne acting, supporting, costuming, and staging. Another success has been achieved. - ali' ABOVE: Barbara Thibodo and Richard Sethne appear in The Heiress . CENTER: Tom Schmallen, Cherie Boen, and Eva Kay Briggs appear in Dark of the Moon . The world-famous Sir John, who has appeared in this country a number of times, presented Shakespea.re,s Ages of Man which consisted of selections from Shakespeare concerning youth, manhood, and old age. The performance given at MSC was the same one he had performed in the festival of Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Berlin. His visit to MSC was part of the first tour he had made of the United States since 1950, and marked the first time American audiences had seen Sir john in a solo performance. This and the other Fine Arts series presentations were arranged by Dr. Joseph Satin and Mr. Marcel Stratton, co-chairmen of the Fine Arts committee. Don Cossacks The original Don Cossack Chorus and Dancers appeared at MSC March 9, second on the schedule of the Fine Arts program. Amazing agility in knife juggling and dexterity and grace in both singing and dancing were exhibited here by the Cossacks, who, in the past 17 years, have toured six continents and 65 countries to give 2,770 concerts. Reputed to be the finest chorus of male voices in the world, the Don Cossacks are a group of White Russians who fled Russia at the time of the Communist revolution. They have appeared before record-breaking audiences both in this country and abroad, marching on stage in bright uniforms and with military precision to present their singing and dancing. Grass Roots PARLIAMENT 1 E :Tia . - - me 9199 M0zart's romantic version of the Don Iuan legend, Don Giovanni , was presented here April 13 in English by the National Crass Roots Opera Company. Directed by Cert Muser, a native of Manheim, Germany, the group was formed in 1948 in Raleigh, N.C., by a local attorney and businessman A. Fletcher. Since their first appearance as a group in 1950, the company has given over 900 performances in 35 states and has presented 25 operas, all done in English. A highlight of the MSC presentation for students was seeing four of their classmates appear with the Crass Roots Company. Helen Warren, Janice Prichard, Duane Eide, and james Nagel were in the production. Di ni taries I rn x P Dr. David Schwartz greets labor leader Sander Cenis.
