The enduring sign of foreverness. We the Senior Class of 1975 have reached our destination. We had set our goal and have now achieved it. We would, therefore, like to dedicate our 1975 annual to those who stood beside us and watched us grow. Those people who aided us in our drive for becoming true and honest individuals now deserve recognition. We, like the rose, will go on forever because we have YOU. We proudly dedicate our annual to YOU. HOMECOMING ’74 QUEEN JUDY ROYALTY PEP FEST PARADE GAME RIGHT: A shocked Judy Hamerlinck accepted flowers and a crown from Dick Christianson, Jim Fredricks, and Ken Noyes. ABOVE: Queen candidates Mary Sanow, Andrea Traen, and Helen Traen rode in the parade during the Homecoming festivities. RIGHT: Queen Judy Hamerlinck and Princess Phyllis Down- ing gave us their biggest smiles while they waited for the parade to begin. 4 The date was September 18, 1974. The setting was a chilly, autumn day. The occasion— Homecoming 1974. Activities began ear- ly with float plans being made and carried out. Classes chose attendants and the Queen candidates, as the excitement contin- ued to grow. Thursday evening proved to be a thrilling one with many fun events well planned. The Pep Club came through in true form by proving that they could withstand the pressures put on them by the Beaver Patrol during a yelling contest. Then, after watch- ing some hilarious skits, Tim Gossen broke the ten- sion by announcing the royalty. Joy erupted with- in the crowded gymnasium when Judy Hamerlinck was crowned the 1974 Home- coming Queen. Rain threatened the Friday parade, but didn't stop it. Game time found a fired up Viking team losing to a tough Jasper team. Dead Chicken Woof provided entertainment for the dance that followed. Homecom- ing '74—a date to remember. ABOVE CENTER: Attend- ants Jody Peterson, Cheryl Fier, and Suzy Boerboom glanced at the cameras during the Friday afternoon parade. 5 ABOVE: The Senior Class took first place honors in the float contest with the slogan Senior Float, The theme, Pour it on, Vikes , rode on the back of the winning float, ROYALTY ’74 1974 Homecoming Royalty: Seniors: Helen Traen, Ken Amundson, Andrea Traen, Jim Opdahl, Mary Sanow, Kurt Pesch, Queen Judy Hamerlinck, Brian Boe, Princess Phyllis Downing, and Jim Christianson; Juniors: Suzy Boerboom, and John Pennings; Sophomores: Cheryl Fier, and Dennis Buysse; Freshmen: Jody Peterson, and Paul Erickson. RIGHT: Homecoming '74 saw the new- ly organized Beaver Patrol sponsor their first event of the year—the Miss Star Conference pageant. The follow- ing lovely young ladies(?) were in- volved in the contest: Denise Obese (Dennis Stocks) of Fulda, Felicia Hot Body (Earl Skaar) of Minneota, Eunice Dingleballs (Chris Drown) of Hills- Beaver Creek, Eliza Lipinski (Jim Tillemans) of Ivanhoe, and Donna Do That (Daryl Gillund) of Tyler. This exciting moment was captured just as Felicia Hot Body was named the first Miss Star Conference. (Jasper was not present because their girls were playing football.) LEFT: Queen Judy Hamerlinck listened atten- tively to Captain Dick Christianson as he presented her with the team football and his congratulations. ABOVE: Ken ( Big Bear ) Amundson leaped high in the air to grab a pass, and ran the dis- tance to score a touchdown for Minneota. LEFT: Brian ( Bo Bo ) Boe ripped through the Viking Head to signal the start of the 1974 Homecoming game against Jasper. 7 “OUR TOWN” The fall all-school play was a revival of a classic American drama, Our Town, by Thorton Wilder. In the play. Wilder once said that he sought to find the value above all price for the smallest events in our daily lives. The play centered around the lives of two families and the changes they went through in the small community of Grovers Corners. The play combined realism with the sense of audience imagi- nation as the stage manager (Lance Merritt) guided us through the life cycle of Emily Webb (Lynn Welch) and George Gibbs (John Breyfogle). Director, Ms. Linda Berger, added contempary music to the high school's production of Our Town by calling on the talents of Jim Christianson, Dick Christianson, John Pennings, and Scott Josephson. ABOVE RIGHT: Helen Traen, Stage Manager; Deb Bradley, Student Director; Ms. Linda Berger, Director; and Jo- ann Stoks, Ass't Stage Manager, discussed possible plans of getting Chris Drown after practice. Under the critical direction and observation by Mr. Herb Pagel and his sidekick, Michelle Koppien, the play was brought to the public on May 25, 1975. Some of the better lines remain with us, such as Helen Traen's Me too! THE CLASS OF 1975 I just can't believe we're finally graduating was a line often heard from the members of the Senior class during graduation week. Yes, graduation night did come for the 69 worthy students. May 29, 1975, marked the end of twelve years of study and the beginning of a new, adventurous life. We learned many things throughout our years of schooling (even how to walk from the hips!). We shared the joys, fears, trials, and overall good times of class hap- penings. We went through four deaths, which proved to bring us closer together. We grew into mature adults under the guidance of our parents, teachers, and friends. We were a group of people capable of being taught and learn- ing. We will continue to learn the rest of our lives. We will always be the class of 1975. The closing number, Peace, My Friends, was done with soloists and special lighting to add the extra touch. The MHS chorus also performed at area churches during the winter. They sang a variety of songs which included The Creation, a rock cantata by David Bobrowitz and Steven Porter that is based on the earth's creation. As if working on the other music wasn't enough, the chorus busily prepared for the district contest. It was a super year for the cheer- leaders, a year filled with challenges requiring hard work in order to meet these goals. Keeping the spirit of the fans up was the biggest job, and in order to accomplish this task, physical and mental preparation was often as time consum- ing and demanding as the players' readiness period. In order to inspire spirit, cheers were altered to make them as lively and appealing as possible, and drums were utilized to make the spirit more noticeable. The cheerleaders attended a cheerleading clinic at South Dakota State University in Brookings where a few new techniques were learned. It was a great thrill to say Where are you from, and hear the fans yell, MINNEOTA. After the move was completed, preparations were made for the production of the 1975 annual. The new members were briefed on the rules and deadlines were set. After the pages were finished, another yearbook was sent to the Josten American Yearbook Company in Topeka, Kansas, for publication. The paper staff was a busy organization this year. After everybody realized that Andrea Traen couldn't produce the paper alone, successful papers came out. One interesting feature of the paper this year was the run-down of the Burl Ives concert, starring Bob Prellwitz. Forty members were involved in a very rewarding year of participa- tion in speech contests. Ms. Linda Berger, Coach, and her speech participants attended invitationals at Marshall, Luverne, Worthington, and Southwest State College. These contests were practices for the really big events. In order to get the team fired up for districts, the first speech pep- fest was held. Much to the enjoy- ment of all, the pepfest was a big success. Five participants and eight alternates went on from dis- trict to region. State tournaments followed with Gloria Fredricks and Becky Hov- land representing Minneota. Gloria placed sixth in her event.
