German French Classes Require Work Before Play With help from Carol Fruleux, the first Amity aide from northern France, French students studied and had fun with French culture. One fun thing they did was to have hat day. Girls made hats and boys made cards for the girls. First and second year students could go to French camp, third and fourth year students could go to a French dinner at the Hotel Sofitel. German classes lost one of their teachers through declining enrollment (the school had fifty few students than the previous year) so Herr Kauls taught all the German classes. Students performed skits, sang, played games and yodelled. German was hard work, but it was fun! said Erik Jorgenson (10). Heather Koehler Swedish Spanish Makes Changes New faces were seen in the Swedish and Spanish classes. Along with Fru Hanslin, for the first time her husband Herr Percy Haslin taught the four Swedish classes each Friday. Fourth year Swedish was new for the language department; it combined with third year in the old German room. December 11, the Swedish students celebrated Santa Lucia with a breakfast before school. The festival included a procession, Swedish dancing and traditional Swedish food. A new Amity Aide from Argentina, Adriana Navarro, helped with the Spanish classes. Senorita Wyn-veen taught the beginning levels with the new books. Senora Febres, a new M.A. teacher, taught the more advanced classes. They worked on pronunciation and speech. The students had the opportunity to visit Spain for two weeks during the spring. Intercultural Student Experiences, a high school foreign language program, organized the homestay and Spain tour. Spanish students also had the option to take a weekend trip to the Spanish camp, a Concordia Language Village. Above left: Lois Cameron (10) studiously does her homework during 7th hr. Spanish.
