Minneapolis, Mn. 55406 But the Fruits of the Spirit 2 A re Love, Joy, Peace, Patience Minnehaha Academy is a place where students work together. The Holy Spirit is visible through the attitudes and actions of students and faculty. In Minnehaha Academy do you see... Love — the caring for one another, friends standing behind you through the hard times, to just be there when you need them, or someone taking time out of his day to help another. Joy — Meeting new people, getting good grades in a class, talking with friends, or going out after a game. Peace — the feeling you have after convocation, being able to look out over the river and know God created that river, or the reassurance of love. Patience — Taking each day as it comes, knowing someday you’ll understand God’s purpose, knowing the teacher has a reason for what he makes you do, or trying one more time to understand a friend’s problem. s Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Kindness — caring for someone’s needs. loving those who aren’t the most lovable, being concerned for someone who needs help — someone who could use a hand whether he shows appreciation or not. Goodness — people helping each other, offering to help bring in equipment after gym class, or a teacher giving up his lunch time to help a student. Faithfulness — the unspoken loyalty between friends, trusting someone not to let you down, being able to count on a teacher to help you, or knowing that God will help, no matter what. Gentleness — tender lovingkindness towards someone in a bad situation, mutual care for all, or common courtesy. Self-control — doing your school work when you would rather be watching the soccer game, not getting angry when something doesn’t get done or using your Christian sense in a tender situation. Self-Control; Against Such 6 Things There Is No Law. 7 I ;!V • • Our lives are albums written through With good or ill, with false or true; And as the blessed angels turn The pages of our years. How could these sweeping changes be shown in a short evening program? The junior class tried their best to show a few of these changes on Friday evening of Homecoming weekend with their program: “Reflections of the ’70’s.” Featuring sketches of Watergate, the Bicentennial, Star Wars, and Chicken Little telling the world that Skylab was falling, a look at the disco scene and special appearances by Elvis and President Carter, the evening ended with the coronation of 1979 Homecoming King and Queen, Dave Hughey and Angel Mordh. So now Homecoming ’79 is history, part of a decade that we all grew up in and will be a part of us for the rest of our lives. 1) Troy Nelson introduces President Jimmy Carter (Steve Hatle). 2) Wade Thom men and Karen Berg as George and Martha Washington. 3) Ron Monson as Elvis. 4) The cast of “Reflections.” 5) Showing teachers the disco side of life with Pam Salovich. DEADLINES!! n The French Club, though smaller than the other language clubs, was extremely active under the guidance of Mrs. Johannassen. Among other things, the club decorated the library at Christmas, had various parties through the year, and the second, third, and fourth year students prepared various French dishes for other 7th and 8th hour language classes. Members of the French club also ran the concession booth during athletic events. Towards the end of the year the class held a Mardi Gras and participated in a French contest during the months of April and May. 18 The Spanish department has been under the direction of Mr. Rick Olson for the last eleven years. He has had six classes with 135 students in all. “El Club De Espanol” had many interesting activities over the year. They attended the German Club Okto-berfest along with the other language clubs. In October an initiation ceremony including a taco supper was held. They attended an indoor Kick’s game, a Christmas caroling party, and in the spring were hosts to the other languages for a special dinner. Seniors Angel Mordh and Connie Nelson were in charge of the year’s activities. German Club was active, as always, with a full calendar of events throughout the year. Initiation into the club led off a string of events that included cooperative dinners with other languages, attending a Kicks game, and, of course. German Day. New during the year was “Guido's Gazette,” a publication written in German that contained games, puzzles, and advice on different matters from “Leibe Annabelle.” 20 Though a new language, Swedish proved that it could have fun with the rest of the languages by staging the first Santa Lucia breakfast at MA. and also participating with other language activities. Members of the Swedish Club, pictured in the upper left, were: Instructor Kathy Wiberg, Becky Seaberg, Beth Wilson, Debbie Peterson, Jane Ornat, Darlyce Jones, John Lundin. Virginia Glader, Diane Willet. Lisa Erickson, Tim Belval. and Ann Wahld-ick. This year the Photography Club produced most of the photographs in this book. Although many people think that the average photographer is somewhere in the twilight zone, being a photographer means taking personal time to shoot school events, putting up with camera hogs, carrying a camera around all day, putting up with camera-shy people and trying to keep the yearbook staff happy, not an easy task, to be sure! The first convo of the year was presented by the people in Young Life, who with their personal testimonies set an example for student participation and variety. Other student produced convos included presentations by the Football and Volleyball teams. Seniors, Teen Missions and the Student Spiritual Life Committee. 26 Variety was also provided during the week of Sept. 17-21 by Bob Stromberg. With mime, song and messages, both in convos and homerooms. Bob taught and entertained the student body. Other entertaining convos were presented by “Nehemiah”, “Captive Free”, and “New Day”, musical groups presenting Christian music and other forms of ministry, including personal testimony and puppet shows. 27 M.A.’s Got 29 The Halloween Spirit the haunted house . .. The hoedown was held in the gym and along with the square dancing. There was a cookie booth, eggsitting, dart toss, licorice eat (congratulations to the champs Dave Hughey and Angel Mordh), and wedding ceremonies held by the Rev. Barb Olson on the stage (Skip Groves — you finally tied the knot!!). Thanks to a few alert policemen who patrolled the gym, the jail was kept full and busy. JO Swing your partner.' Sno week began with Monday as Hat Day, and Seniors sold snow cones after school in the Campus Room. At the same time the annual Broomball tournament got under way. Tuesday was Country Day and about half of Minnehaha wore bibs — bibs as in bib overalls. The day included a cake auction with the highest selling cake being Becky Durr’s, going for $5.60. Wednesday was 50’s day, and after school entertainment included a coffee house with Forrest Dahl, Jon Larsen, John Hastings and John Helmberger provid-ingthe MUZAK. Thursday was Dress-up day and Ribbon day with Eric Hawkins becoming MA’s most irresistible man, collecting 31 ribbons. Friday ended the week with cheerleaders selling bubble gum to red and white clad students, and a huge pep fest was held after school. Sno Daze week climaxed on Saturday night with the Senior class, under the direction of Mary Schwab, presenting a memorable rendition of “Cinderella.” Lovely Cinderella (Kris Rosdahl) suffered from the cruelty of her step-mother (Karen Mulhausen) and her four step-sisters (Roger Christiensen, Chris Getchel, Dan Larson and Todd Lewis). But at the darkest hour, she was rescued by two charming “fairies” (Kirk Militzer and Steve Erickson) dressed in tutu’s, hiking boots and long underwear, and waving tinfoil wands. The evening did indeed end happily ever after for the cast and all those who witnessed this delightful performance. 37 Row 1) Cathy Farrel. Sandi Lee. Lisa Thorpe. Judy Colley. In an effort to expand their role of service toward the school, the National Honor Society took on many projects under the leadership of Dave Swenson and Kris Rosdahl. Taking over the bookstore, continuing sponsorship of an overseas child and serving at the 50th reunion of the class of 1929 were some of the activities of the NHS. One of the biggest and most successful projects was the Big Brother-Big Sister organization. This proved to be a way for upperclassmen to meet and make friends with members of the junior high. 38 39 40 Intramural broomball was again part of Sno Daze with 30 teams participating in a two week tournament. Reading the schedule was almost as entertaining as the games themselves, with teams such as the “Cumulative Book Index, p. 1333,” “The Bung Fungs,” and “The Helmet Buffs” gracing the slots on the schedule. With fast and furious action, broomball proved to be an exciting and entertaining part of Sno Week. 41 Education docs not mean teaching people what they donut know .. Part of their success was due to new senior Peter Magnuson, who working with captain Dave Hughey provided a tremendous amount of leadership and support. Outstanding records for the season go to sophomore Don DuBois, juniors Pong Xatprasert and Mark Erickson, and senior Peter Magnuson. Much improved over the last season was junior Chris Sletten. The team was plagued by injury which caused problems in the 185 and heavyweight classifications. These problems were insignificant, however, when compared with the previous season’s difficulties in filling all weight classes. There were extremely few forfeits this year as interest in wrestling is being revived at Minnehaha, especially among the underclassmen. 89 Varsity Row 1: Heidi Dale, Carolyn Dean, Kerri Caple, Karen Mulhausen. Holland CLASSES 99 This was it. The big switch. Having to get used to a new building, new teachers and especially new friends. Wondering if you could ever make it through six years in this place. Hearing that school gets harder later on, and not believing it, since it was hard enough before. But there was fun too. Seeing how much you could get away with, going to “rear’ class parties, proving that you were somebody, an important part of the school, to everyone else, but even though it was fun, you waited for the day you could be anything but a seventh grader! Well, maybe, but there was still school and homework to work around and suddenly you realized the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow must appear in senior high. After awhile you came to realize that you were between the old and the new, that next year you had to be in senior high, but you were still only an 8th grader. After all the bad. you still had a good time. It was much the same as last year, but you were only a step away from the freedom and status of 9th grade. We had made it through the perils of junior high and finally we were somebody. It was somewhat like the first day of junior high, but we were in familiar territory, and it was just the new faces we had to adjust to. That was when new horizons opened. Suddenly there was so much we could do. Sports, Singers, Orchestra, the list was almost endless, and so was the homework. We were on the rise. Last year we used 50 trillion kilowatt hours to heat our buildings, run our factories, machines, and vehicles. 40 minutes of sunshine produce enough energy to supply our needs for one year! SOLARGIZER It's what the world is coming to. SOLARGIZER —WHAT THE WORLD IS COMING TO. Solar heat is versatile, non polluting, inexhaustible. And we have the technology to harness it. The procedure is simple; your success depends on the system you use. We specialize in domestic water heat. That's why people who know are coming to use. Compare. You'll buy Solargizer. The Collectors. They're unique. Fiberglass glazing maximizes penetration of the sun's rays while enabling the collector to withstand high temperatures. The collecting surface is solid copper. It's strong, a superior conductor, resistant to corrosion, a natural for heated swimming pools Mounted in fiberglass frames, the collector forms a weather proof, durable, one piece unit. The Solar Heat Exchanger. No need to wrap our unit in unsightly insulation. The tank meets the strictest standards in the industry. The pump, storage tank, expansion tank controls and other components have been chosen with durability, quality, and performance in mind. The Cost. Once installed, the system costs little or nothing to operate. Your only expenditure is for the initial investment. The “payback period depends on your utility rates and hot water consumption. The Installation. Any plumbing or building contractor can install the system to conform to local codes. The kit will arrive with complete instructions. The Opportunity.
