ANTLER 1979 MINNEHAHA ACADEMY Minneapolis, Minnesota Volume 53 r Minnehaha, I A place where students strive for academic excellence, guided by concerned and loving teachers. A place where the truth is taught, where students meet their Savior and grow in Him. A place where students learn love and concern for others, enjoying all that life gives to us. Minnehaha, given life by the Living Water, composed of lives dedicated to our Lord, Jesus Christ. 2 Baarda inspects the board Through Minnehaha Academy Flows . . . Sarah Tjornholm studies with ’abjection’ Francisco Barry planning the next war Discussions, Decisions, or Dullsville? 3 THE LIVING TER OF A Time to Meditate” The heart must have its wintertime, A time to meditate, when peace. Like snow, descends with calming grace And all the fruitless worries cease. The heart must have its wintertime, A time when dreams, like roots, can sleep And gather strength until the day They have a rendezvous to keep. The heart must have its wintertime. An interlude when hope sprouts wings As bright as any cardinal's. And newborn courage softly sings. The heart must have its time of snow To rest in silence and to grow. Marie Dacrr Bochringer A CHRIST FOREVER MOLDING . . . “ Wise Words ” Faith is our counselor; Without it we could not live. Hope is our guiding star When darkness closes in. Charity is our selflessness. Our willingness to share. Wisdom is our oldest friend With mind to see and hear. Truth is our self-restraint When fear controls our hearts. Peace is our waiting soul When God shall answer prayer. You are richer today than you were yesterday if you laughed often, given something, forgiven even more, made a new friend today, or made stepping-stones of stumbling blocks. If you have thought more in terms of “thyseir than “myself,” or if you have managed to be cheerful even though you were weary. You are richer tonight than you were this morning if you have taken time to trace the handiwork of God in the commonplace things of life, or if you have learned to count out things which really do not count, or if you have been a little blinder to the faults of friend and foe. You are far richer if a little child has smiled at you, and a stray dog has licked your hand, or if you have looked for the best in others and given others the best in you. Author Unknown 7 u Bclva Flcglc, who worked in Minnehaha's admissions office for nearly eleven years, left at the end of the first quarter. Mrs. Flegle played an important part in recruiting many of the students that have come to the Academy. She always expressed a deep concern for people, and, in turn, gained respect from all. Always enthusiastic about Minnehaha, Mrs. Flcglc mentioned the school name wherever she went, including on a KTIS radio program, during visits to churches, at the State Fair, and during Sunday School conventions. We will miss her. 8 16 mmuRS INDENT gfcflVITIES 40 mC LTY 58 FTNE ARTS 74 SPOR TS 92 UNDER CLASSMEN 112 ADVERTISEMENT 156 4NDM 176 9 Oyyxctoo Cl+7 X O September 20th began a trail of events not soon to be forgotten by the Homecoming candidates. Our princesses gathered one night to shop for material and patterns, as well as shoes and flower wreaths for their hair. Later that evening, the girls went for an overnight at Kirsten Frantzich’s house in Wayzata. This was only the beginning; ONE week was given them to complete their dresses and prepare for the night of Coronation, which was difficult, seeing that these girls already had busy schedules. Some of the girls sought outside professional help with their dresses. Others hemmed up their dresses during mods II-12, less than six hours before Homecoming night. Wednesday evening. Sept. 21, the Royal Court had dinner with President Nelson at The Brothers. HOMECOMING ROYAL COURT 1978 Finally the big night came and all was ready (if you don’t consider leaving your Bower wreath at home and having to fetch it at the last moment). We were honored that 1977’s Homecoming King, Dan Fuglestcad, was able to attend. He announced Stu Waite as this year’s Homecoming King. Then Stu had the privilege of announcing his Queen, Amy Koclz. King Stu and Queen Amy continued to reign throughout the evening and for the remainder of the Homecoming festivities. After the program and Coronation many students ended the evening with a late dinner at such elaborate places as The Orion Room, Forepaughs, the top of the Radisson, and the Lowell Inn at Stillwater. After the games on Saturday some went out for a fancy dinner, while others had fun roasting weiners and singing around a bonHre. Sunday morning, the Homecoming Royalty joined in worship at the Jesus People Church, followed by a fellowship dinner at Becky’s Cafeteria. 10 11 HOMECOMING SPOR TS As this year’s football team was getting last minute instructions in the locker room, a crowd was gathering in the stands. Alumni came from the campus room, having just finished a BBQ lunch. Homecoming Royally, and other fans arrived from all directions. At 3 pm the spirited athletes were ready to face St. Anthony. The game began. Fans, with the leadership of the cheerleaders and the “Worlds Worst Walking Band”, enthusiastically encouraged our team. Even with all this help our team lost 12-29. 12 Stu Waite signal the eleven Our spirits were high at noon when the M.A. soccer team met Blake head on. With a score of 4-0 it looked like a shut-out until, with only 22 seconds remaining. Blake scored their only goal. The Indians triumphed with a final score of 4-1. Saturday's Homecoming festivities began at 10 am with girls volleyball. The opponent. Brooklyn Center, was tough, but not too difficult for M.A. Our team was well prepared. The Indians’ scoring was a team effort, enabling them to take two out of the three games, capturing the match. 13 Studying replays Top left: Dan Larsen interviews Charles Lind berg. As practice progressed, the cast eventually stopped using the script because of the numerous changes in it. The dress rehearsal Thursday night went surprisingly well, yet even on program day, Mary Schwab and Mr. Hepburn were seen putting final touches on the sets. Father Time, Roger Christensen, led us on a journey through the decades. Eric Hawkins stepped out of roll in a 19IO’s skit, surprising Kari Eitreim by making a fake kiss into a real one. The 20’s brought us the Charleston and an introduction to the Blues, followed by the 1930’s, where the audience was given a very descriptive view of the Waltons. President Dewey was elected in the 40’s and the 50’s brought a dance in the Malt Shop. In the 60’s, the audience found itself in space, taking a short trip to conehead land”. Mr. Hepburn and his Homecoming Band were a popular attraction. The show was a big success and brought in record crowds, which pleased hard-working co-chairmen, Mary Schwab and Lois Hepburn. FINE ARTS 74 The Touch of the Master’s Hand ’Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer Thought it scarcely worth his while To waste much time on the old violin But held it up with a smile. “What am I bidden, good folks,” he cried. “Who’ll start the bidding for me?” “A dollar, a dollar”; then, “Two! Only two? Two dollars, and who’ll make it three? Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice; Going for three ...” But no, From the room, far back, a gray-haired man Came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust from the old violin, And tightening the loose strings, He played a melody pure and sweet As a caroling angel sings. The music ceased, and the auctioneer. With a voice that was quiet and low. Said: “What am I bid for the old violin?” And he held it up with the bow. “A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two? Two thousand! And who’ll make it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, And going, and gone, ” said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, “We do not quite understand What changed its worth. ” Swift came the reply: “The touch of a master’s hand.” And many a man with life out of tune And battered and scarred with sin, Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd. Much like the old violin. A “mess of pottage, ” a glass of wine; A game- and he travels on. He is “going” once, and “going” twice, He’s “going” and almost “gone.” But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd Never can quite understand The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought By the touch of the Master’s hand. RENDER UNTO CAESAR THE THINGS WHICH ARE CAESAR S, Although the fall play was a tragedy and the acting on stage was serious, the rehearsals for Antigone were filled with laughter, jokes and casual conversation. Mrs. Hinck, the director of the play, quickly gained the respect and cooperation of all involved. Everyone will remember the hand-cuffing incident. One poor guard was left hand-cuffed to a pole for over 20 minutes! Then there were the orders to McDonalds. Twenty-seven orders of hamburgers, fries, and drinks are a drama in itself! Most of the cast felt that five weeks of rehearsals was too short, yet the play was a success - and the friends made will always be a special part of the memories of Minnehaha’s 1978 fall play. AND UNTO GOD THE THINGS WHICH ARE GODS 91 SPORTS knowing that you are always here to understand and accept me, helps me get along in the confused world, if every person could have someone just like you, the world would become a peaceful garden. Our M.A. cheerleaders were at every sports event in their red and white. This year, like others, Minnehaha had two A-squads and two B-squads-one cheering for the Soccer and Hockey teams, and the other cheering for the football and Basketball teams. And both cheering for some of the Wrestling meets. Along with the fun, there came a lot of work, patience and cheering under conditions that sometimes didn't look too promising. THE FAMILY OF FIRST COVENANT CHURCH St. Paul 168 SOLARGIZER It's what the world is coming to. THE SUN—GOD'S POWERPLANT. Last year we used 50 trillion kilowatt hours to heat our buildings, run our factories, machines, and vehicles. 40 minutes of sunshine produce enough energy to supply our needs for one year! SOLARGIZER—WHAT THE WORLD IS COMING TO. Solar heat is versatile, non-polluting, inexhaustible. And we have the technology to harness it. The procedure is simple; your success depends on the system you use. We specialize in domestic water heat. That's why people who know are coming to use. Compare. You’ll buy Solargizer. The Collectors. They're unique. Fiberglass glazing maximizes penetration of the sun's rays while enabling the collector to withstand high temperatures. The collecting surface is solid copper. It's strong, a superior conductor, resistant to corrosion, a natural for heated swimming pools Mounted in fiberglass frames, the collector forms a weather proof, durable, one piece unit. The Solar Heat Exchanger. No need to wrap our unit in unsightly insulation. The tank meets the strictest standards in the industry The pump, storage tank, expansion tank controls and other components have been chosen with durability, quality, and per-, formance in mind. The Cost. Once installed, the system costs little or nothing to operate. Your only ex-penditure is for the initial investment. The payback period'' depends on your utility rates and hot water consumption. The Installation. Any plumbing or building contractor can install the system to conform to local codes. The kit will arrive with complete instructions. The Opportunity. The rapidly expanding solar market creates a profitable business situation Add a Solargizer to your home then multiply your savings by becoming a distri- ► butor. Interested?
