The evening began with a presentation of Royalty and an introduction of last year’s King and Queen. Then came a few skits and songs starring some of Minnehaha's own faculty and students. Each of these helped to keep the mood of the Fifties alive throughout the evening. Music from the era was a predominant part of the program. After the Coronation, a reception was held in the Campus Room for all in attendance. Saturday was a beautiful day for the athletic events. Minnehaha came out on top against SPA in football, after a tied soccer game. The Cross Country meet was held during halftime of the football game. a 15 cOLLEX m TOM Quietness “Be still and know that lam God, That I who made and gave thee life Will lead thy faltering steps aright; That I who hear each sparrow’s fall Will hear and heed thy earnest call. Iam God. “Be still and know that I am God, ” When aching burdens crush thy heart, Then know I form thee for thy part And purpose in the plan 1 hold. Trust in God. “Be still and know that Iam God, ” Who made the atom's tiny span And set it moving to my plan, That I who guide the stars above Will guide and keep thee in my love. Be thou still. — Doran Minnehaha Worships Reaching Out to Others The Flute Quartet and the Trumpet Ensemble are among the groups under the direction of Mr. Hepburn that reach out to the community through music and witness. Minnehaha has been fortunate this year to have a unique counselor and friend. Dr. I at Sheehan. Dr. Sheehan has been in charge of all of our convocations and worship services, including those over the Intercom, in the Campus Room, and in homerooms. He also started ’'Insights,” short periods for students to spend together during their free mods. He organized a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes here and has been in charge of many worthwhile after-school service projects for students. Fat’s main interest is students and their feelings. He is always ready to listen to and to guide them. Together 20 Person to Person 21 7? Perry Bruget, 51 Concert Band Has a Busy Year The Concert Band, in its position as the most important instrumental group at Minnehaha Academy, had a busy and interesting year. Beginning the season with its annual appearance at the Spaghetti Splash in September, the band inspired interest and support for their various activities from the Band Parents' Organization. The band's appearance at the Homecoming football game and its contribution later to Pep Band performances at basketball games made the members vital supporters of school spirit. Cutting a record, playing for two school convocations and providing Christmas music at Southdale were important December activities. A concert in Winthrop, Minnesota; participation in the “Erik Leidzen Festival at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis; and the California tour were highlights of the spring season. The tour itinerary included cities from San Francisco to I os Angeles and featured an appearance at Disneyland. Performances at year-end activities, such as Commencement and at the Olympics foY Retarded Children rounded out a full program for the Concert Band. Mr. Hepburn conducts at a football game. The band performs at Homecoming. b2 Orchestra And Study Band Participate in Concerts The advent of the Orchestra has brought a new dimension to Minnehaha's musical program. String players now have the opportunity to make full use of their talents here. Consisting of a well-balanced group of strings, woodwinds, brasses and percussion under the direction of Mr. David Hepburn, the Orchestra made its debut at a November recital. Further performances were given at the Christmas Choral Concert, where it accompanied the combined choirs in Handel's Messiah; at an Open House for prospective students; at the Fop Concert, where they made a major contribution to the program; and at a Spring Concert. With these fine performances, the Orchestra has gained support and acclaim for their hard work, as they have grown to become an important musical organization. The Orchestra appears in concert. The Study Band adds interest to the Pop Concert with authentic costumes and exciting music. Mr. Hepburn previews new music. The Study Hand, comprised predominantly of Freshmen and Sophomores, became a major force in the thrust for school spirit. Playing at the football games and adding its support to the Pep Band during the basketball season gave it an important place at the games. Performing, also, throughout the year at various functions, such as the Pop Concert and the Honors' Day Convocation, the Study Band became an accepted and appreciated group, while the members grew in experience and musical ability. This system was set up so that all three representative groups could view their opinions and have a part in decisions made concerning student life. It was the second year of this form of government. The committee met about three times every two months, and the meetings were open to all students. In several convocations throughout the year, the S.G.B student representatives gave an account of what the S.G.B. was doing for them. Minutes of the meetings were posted on bulletin boards and also in the Quiver. A couple of activities achieved and sponsored by the S.G.B were the Joyce Everson concert and Thursday Night at the Movies. 88 Student Leadership Retreat ROW ONE: ‘resident Wnterdahl. tin Hast tun d. Admissions Office Northwestern College Roseville, Minnesota 55113 636-4840 BETHLEHEM COVENANT CHURCH 198 Humility is just as much the opposite of self-abasement as it is of self-exaltation. To be humble is not to make comparisons. Secure in its reality, the self is neither better nor worse, bigger nor smaller, than anything else in the universe. It is - is nothing, yet at the same time one with everything. It is in this sense that humility is absolute self-effacement. To be nothing in the self-effacement of humility, yet, for the sake of the task, to embody its whole weight and importance in your bearing, as the one who has been called to undertake it To give to people, works, poetry, art what the self can contribute, and to take, simply and freely, what belongs to it by reason of its identity. Praise and blame, the winds of success and adversity, blow over such a life without leaving a trace or upsetting its balance. Towards this, so help me, God — Dag Hammarskjbld Minnehaha Academy • Mississippi River Road at 31st Street • Minneapolis. Minnesota 55406 Wilbur C. Westerdahl, President 199 Index B A day.
