The highlight for this years debate team was when they took third place at the St. Olaf toumments. In her first attempt at original oratory, Chel Anderson succeeded in taking first place also at the St. Olaf tournaments. The topic for debate jvas, Government Involvement in the Water and Air Pollution within the U. S. The debate team participated in a total of six debate tournaments during the year, and was under the direction of Mr. Fisher for the first time. In another field of speaking, Mary Haemig placed first in the Voice of Democracy competition within our school. Round Robins during the spring were also challenging experiences for those who enjoy involvement in speaking. Show Biz This years fall P.T.A. play was the humorous presentation, Don’t Drink The Water”. It starred a mixed cast of students and P.T.A. members. The success of the production was probably due to the fact that it was just pluin funny and the audience could really identify with the characters. The play was about a typical American family on vacation as they find themselves trapped in the American Embassy in Russia. The spring play was also a humorous presentation, but of a little different variety. The Arms Of The Man”, was a satire on heroism and romanticism. The story took place in Hungary in the 18th century. These presentations provided opportunities for new students to be added to the list of Thespian members who already have contibuted one-hundred hours or more of work toward the production of a play. These words are taken from the theme song of this years exciting annual Pop Concert performance, One World . Phoebe Pederson and Duane Jones narrated the imaginary trip that took us floating over the countries of the world. When a huge windstorm blew their balloon off course, it resulted in a delightful visit to faraway lands and a chance to enjoy music from many other cultures. From the Arab sheiks to the Dutch girls, everyone in the band contributed in their own way to the theme. Mr. Hepburn requested that a special recognition go to the over one-hundred Band Boosters who put tremendous amounts of time and planning into this program to make it such a great success. Willett, W, Pucker up' Participation is the keynote Our folk group this year was more like a “small choir”, reflected one of the thirteen members. The group was accompanied by three guitars, a piano, a bass, and on occasion, a flute. Their busy schedule took them to numerous churches in and outside the Twin City area. Mr. Bostrom went with the group when they performed, and Mr. Hepburn was supervisor and organizer for their engagements. However the credit for the song arrangement was due entirely to the folk group itself. Mark Hoiland acted as leader” for the group. Two other musical groups that contributed to chapel services were the Woodwind Ensemble, and the Miriam Sextet. Our faithful chapel players also provided us with the music for most of the services. The Senate consists of two representatives from each home room, and the House contains two from each class. One of the achievements of the Student Government this year was to revise the Handbook. The primary goals of the Student Government were to stimulate more enthusiastic student participation and to imorove communication between the student body and the Administration.
