Portf me OPENING 3 In the two years that I ' ve been involved in yearbook, I ' ve learned one very important thing — it ' s not as easy as it looks. As an editor, I ' ve had to worry about pictures being taken, copy being typed, and whether we had enough yearbooks for those who bought them! I could never understand why any adult who didn ' t need an activity to get into college would put herself through this kind of torture. Mrs. Diane Jeserski, willingly put her time into the Minnechaug yearbook for a number of years. In fact, when the 1985 staff had no advisor, she graciously accepted the position even with the responsibilities of a two-year old at home. The 1985 Falcon was plagued with problems, but Mrs. Jeserski still kept the book together even in the face of her own personal tragedies that year. The time and effort Mrs. Jeserski put into the Falcon over the years can not be forgotten. The 1986 staff has decided to dedicate our book to Mrs. Jeserski for all that she has given to the yearbook over the years. Thank you Mrs. Jeserski — and we ' ll always remember. Karolyn Belcher 4 OPENING To Remember Mrs. Katherine Goulding taught her students the importance of cooking for over two decades here at Minne- chaug. She was Home Economics De- partment Chairman for many years, and will be remembered for imparting the knowledge of creating gastronomi- cal delights to her students. Mr. George Robinson began teaching at Minnechaug during its first year of operation in 1958. Through 1985, he helped several generations of Minne- chaug students through every level of mathematics. He also served as the Mathematics Department Chairman and will always be considered an im- portant and valuable part of Minne- chaug. Mr. Warren Amerman was a chorus instructor at Minnechaug for twelve years, serving many of those years as Department Chairman. Perhaps that for which he will be most remembered is his production of Gilbert and Sulli- van which served not only Minnechaug but the Wilbraham community. We shall miss his talent, warmth and lead- ership. ' Qtt ' Q ' S ■ ' ■ -• -4- ' ■ ' • ' ' vi ■«■ ' .•.. ' ' ? Mrs. Valenta Robinson was a Spanish teacher at Minnechaug for twenty-two years and was very involved in the Foreign Lan- guage Club which she helped mold. She will be greatly missed by her former Spanish students. For fifteen years, Mr. William McLean taught Social Studies here at Minnechaug, and coached the golf team for much of that time. Both his students and players will always re- member him for his exceptional ability to moti- vate. Q SENIORS John O ' Shaughnessy CLASS OF 1986 Dear Mrs. King, Hi! Well, it ' s June now and this will be my last note to you as class secretary. It ' s hard to believe that four years of Minnechaug has already flown by. Why, just yesterday it was freshman year and John was president (of course), Jenn Buchholz vice president, Hillary Broderick class secretary, and Dave Hartin, treasurer. Everyone was running around trying to find us an advisor and you came to our aid. Sophomore year rolled around with Kim Maloney as vice-president, and Noel Rihm as secretary. This was the year of chocolate bunnies and Minnechaug caps. And class rings. And of course I reme mber Junior year! Mark Macero was elected vice-president and I was elected secretary. As did everyone else, I welcomed the idea of planning activities and fundraisers — and worry about money!! (Ha ha!) It truly has been hard work — but it was all worth while. We even managed to have some fun. I remember sewing pennant after pennant just to go out and stand in the cold to sell them, (fun?) Our many thanks to Mr. Matroni and his Graphic arts classes for printing the pennants. We truly appreciated it! And remember all the M M ' s Tony gave us for helping with the Magazine Drive? And all the Sugar Daddies you hid? And I remember missing lunch to hand out prizes and fill out the posters — and getting robbed!! Whatever happened to Glen putting a pie in John ' s face if we beat his class at the Magazine Drive? I remember John, Joel, and I trying to find the place to buy soda for our MORP Video Dance. Once we got there, we kept switching the order. We kept carrying cases back and forth to John ' s car. We went all over the place looking for brick wall-paper and stole Burger King crowns! And remember Mike Chambers and Kim Walker were elected as MORP King and queen? And how could I forget our booth at the Town Fair. We stood there in the rain for hours and let people throw wet, dirty, sponges at our faces. Poor John — he really got nailed! (Fun?!) And don ' t forget those soggy jelly beans. And Senior year. I ' ll never forget senior year. Kim was vice president again and Craig Corrigan became treasurer. We finally organized our committees. I remember our last minute planning of the senior Kick-off — and we still had an awesome time. Remember we all signed that poster? Jim Metzger thanks you for your artistic services throughout our four years. And I remember planning all our senior activities — a hayride, a class trip, sledding, senior pranks (shh!) picking the band for the Prom, caps and gowns, gradu- ation, announcements, senior banquet and breakfast. Wow! Were we busy! But we could never have done it without you. You were not only our advisor, but also our friend, We enjoyed your company and thank you, as a class, from the bottom of our hearts. You ' ll never know how much you ' ve been appreciated. Mrs. King — we ' ll always remember you. Wrona 68 ACADEMICS UNDERCLASSMEN Entering Minnechaug Regional High School in early Sep- tember, we remember the nervous anticipation of being freshmen, of getting lost, and of being scared of the upperclassmen. As the months progressed, our class be- came familiar and comfortable with our new school. What we remember most from our first months at school is the new friends we made from Wilbraham and Hampden. We were first recognized when, as a class we won the JCL ' s 9th annual Battle of the Classes Dance. We raised $41.25 because 165 loyal members of our class attended. On November 6 we had our class elections after two long weeks of campaigning with posters, T-shirts, and even personalized pencils! Under the excellent supervision of our class advisor Dr. Joyce Sager, we started to become a real part of Minne- chaug. As in the past, we sponsored a dance in June for the incoming freshmen. Starting off the year with Project Adventure was a real treat (ha!). I can remember climbing up the Pamper Pole and not being able to grasp the trapeze. The rest of the students in the class encouraged me as they swung along with amazing grace (just my luck — half the class seemed to be from the gym nastics team). In doing this we learned to trust each other and how to survive when swinging over the Grand Canyon carrying nitroglycerine in hand — a talent I ' m sure will come in handy come college-application time. Also this year, Balfour Ring Company gave us a super-great selection from which to choose our class rings and, as usual, the selling of these classy Minnechaug memoirs was a huge success. Our four class officers even designed the unique side of our ring. Mr. Kibbe chose Balfour ' s for their elegantly designed rings and fair prices, and he was repaid with an unexpected gift — free Boston Bruins ' tickets! I ' m sure — knowing Mr. K ' s famous love for the Bruins — this made his day, if not his year. This year we also decided to change the traditional (i.e.-boring) candy sale to the first annual Class of ' 88 towel sale. The results were excellent. As one of the class officers, 1 would like to say — thanks. Class of 1988, it was a great year! Keep drying off with your personalized MRHS terry towel, and wear your class ring with well- deserved pride. Top: Rachael Belcastro. The sled has been put away and along with it the tackleback and the blaster. But the memories of being a Minnechaug football player will never desert us. The hours upon hours of practice and time spent with each other made us more than just a team — we be- came brothers. It started with double sessions, — did we ever hate double sessions! The popsicle breaks were our only salvation. The lockc-ooms and showers were never safe — isn ' t that right, Ogre, Henney, Sis, Soves, Guido, and Fabs? — and the weight room every Monday and Thursday was a place where we could do some serious pumping. Tuesdays were supposed to be award days, our driving force, but it was inevitable that somebody neglected to get the stats in on time. We seniors were the leaders of the team, and starter or non- starter we always played an important role. We ' ll never forget our teammates. For many of us this will be the last time we will ever play football. A void is all that will remain along with the memories we shared. The burning of the shoe — remember that? I can still see us in a circle around the large fire and Mike Chambers throwing the old shoe right in the middle. Maybe our record did not show it, but our team had the most guts and pride of any team in Western Mass. Coach Bennett always told us to wear our green shirts with pride — and we always did. The Saturday morning football games were not always victories, but we always found something to cheer about! Even when the game wasn ' t going our way, our spirits couldn ' t be broken!!! For the first time in years our girls went to camp during the summer. A fun filled long weekend at the University of New Hampshire taught us a lot — and we made new friends from far-away places. None of us can ever forget the toilet paper ballet and you ' re out ' a here! The award we won, for the best all-around squad at camp, is one we will trea- sure as memories for years to come. JV CHEERLEADING Starting off a season with a brand new coach halfway through and a new team is not the easiest thing to do. But, with a lot of effort, practice and fun we got a lot of things done. This year our J.V. Cheerleading squad consisted of 4 freshmen, 6 sophomores, and I junior who worked together like clock- work. Jackie, Kelli, and Meredith were the cornerstones — never a word of complaint, and Katy and Sharon just loved climbing to the top. The squad, led by captain Noel Rihm, performed well this year, keeping the crowd entertained through the whole game. We all know that the squad wasn ' t complete without Johnny (Who said that?). A big thanks to him and also to Missy for being Noel ' s crutch during those tough times - especially when Caroline would chew her toes during practice. Katie Brown and Amanda always helped out with their suggestions. Amy ' s precision and abili- ty made the squad look that muc h bet- ter. We have shown our outstanding desire for success. Our team ' s outlook is bright since we will lose only one senior. It will be a great loss, though, because senior, Jean Gorecki, is one of the best guards we have. If not, both Falcon teams will be enthusiastically scoring points for Minnechaug just as they did this year. Of course, their coach, Lynn Couturier, deserves some of the credit. With the many hours of practices, the team improved greatly. The players this year were: Elizabeth Belden, Jacqueline Bushway, Cassandra Coughlin, Liz Dempsey, Amy Fitzger- ald, Linda Herbert, Ellen Jensen, Michele Kowalski, Andrea Lopez, Kristin Phillips, and Susan Stevenson. Our team ' s managers were Jessica Gianantoni and Stacey Richmond. Congratulations, players, on a great season and good luck next year! SPORTS 121 VARSITY HOCKEY Don clears the puck. Hockey this year was better than other years maybe because of Kibbs ' story about yellowjackets , maybe because we did so well, or maybe because of the weekend in Vermont. For what- ever reason though, this years hockey team, on and off the ice, has been better then any other year. Maybe it was the fact that this season was the last for a lot of us; no more shattering hits from Rostowski, Harty will no longer streak through an entire team and tuck the puck firmly into the net. Sis won ' t ever again have to listen to Kibbs tell him, Get the pasta out of your pants! , and never again will Tom O ' Con- nor, or Johnny O ' skate for Minnechaug. Even the ' red line ' of Sanderson, Reed, and Phil, will do no more ' Herbies ' for messing around on the bus. Some people will be back though; Bunzer will skate again for his last year along with Andy ' Tool ' Brown, ' Haze ' Henriques, George ' Obar ' Abar, and Kertenis will have only one last season to wear the green and white. The sophomores are the luckiest though. Those guys have another two years it had seemed like an eternity when we were sophomores too. Shaun O ' Connor will always be there to help the team psyche-up with ' Bad Com- pany ' , and ' Kiss ' . Skip Welch will pick up the scoring where Harty left off, and Scott Stawas will surely take up the slack in goal when Browner leaves. Unfortunately the best is always saved for last. As Seniors we will never forget yellowjackets , Ed Hall, Vermont, Herbies ' , Kibb ' s, or anything else about this year. Even though it was our last, it was definately our best. Well, to shatter that myth — believe it or not, NHS ' ers are pretty normal people who have set a goal and achieved it, and they did some pretty normal things this year (such as spazzing out at their annual supersmash Ha- waiian Dance). Between the fall and spring inductions, NHS ran its usual tutoring programs where a member who, say, happens to see the point in finding the derivative helps out another student who is having trou- ble finding it, or who doesn ' t really want to look for it. ACTIVITIES 139 MODEL CONGRESS t- 1 n i ' 1 ' i 1 N. V- ! r ' s ■ My first M.C. meeting was-to put it gently-a total fiasco. I walked into k 18 late (good start), grabbed a seat, and quietly listened to the heated debate pounding through the crowded room. I heard the word ' Grenada ' pop up several times on both sides and. being the current-events whiz that I was, came to the conclusion that today we were discussing war weapons in Italian accents. Well, I was wrong. I was wrong about a lot of things that day, like when I used a Point of Order (official M.C. lingo) to ask my friend what time she was coming over to go shopping. The club was not amused. After that traumatic experience, I realized that this was not just going to be a join-a-club-do- nothing-make-your-college-application-look-good job, and I began to take it seriously. For the first few (52) meetings, I said not a word, too intimidated by all the debonair debat- ers, too nervous I would say something utterly stupid (and with reason, after the Grenada Pizzeria Mozzarella inci- dent). But you can ' t help getting psyched during the talks — they often touch on something you have very strong feelings about (prejudice, war, nuclear arms, sex) and it becomes a struggle to keep your mouth shut. I started by asking questions and eventually they were even relevant to the topic of discussion. And so I progressed. In January, the Club, decked in its dashing Drew Derna- vich-designed shirts, took its bill on Workfare down to A. I.C. and had a very positive experience. Model Congress in general, has been a positive experience for me. It has taught me that there are always 2 sides to the story many times, I ' ve walked into meetings a diehard on certain is- sues and have left completely converted. M.C. has also done wonders for confidence, for friendships, and for learning the ' elite ' way to spill your guts on world affairs. But the day had suddenly appeared, and I was on my way to Southwick on the Mathletes bus after much convinc- ing. The tension was mounting. Let ' s see ... sin 2 = 2 sincos, Vertical angles are congruent . . . After much unnecessary fretting, I had made it through the meet with much success. And after leaving the meet, I realized the true essence of Mathletes. (I know, you ' re asking yourself how anyone could get any- thing more out of Mathletes than a competition.) Besides the teamwork involved, perhaps the most important outcome of a Mathletes competition is the realization that you were able to solve problems on your own, without the help of your older brother, teacher, or friend. So Mathletes isn ' t just for brains and Einsteins . . . . . . Look at me! I especially remember the short-term ex- change we had: Kids from Kroton-On-the Hudson, New York, came to stay for the weekend. First they attended classes here at school and then we had a party for them. We ate taco ' s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a week-we had so many. On Saturday we strolled in Stur- bridge Village and that night we had an Old-fashioned square dance. None of us knew what we were doing but we all had a good time pretending that we knew. Then finally and sadly, Sunday, our Hudson buddies had to return to New York, and we bade our farewells in tears in our eyes. In such a short time, we had made friends to last a lifetime. ACTIVITIES 147 dJl The Music Makers We need more people up front . . . , Let ' s go, keep it moving we ' re almost done! We, the M.R.H.S. band, un- loaded our Mack truck, from Florida, filled with naval oranges and pink seedless grapefruit. Switch , topping my list of amusing sayings from band, refers to the team- work on the inside of the refrigerated fruit-filled truck. Like a conveyor belt, the assembly line with every bushel that was passed out of the truck. My heart pounded from the strain as I passed along boxes of oranges; still my arms were eager for another. Not all the band work was done within the truck however. We often were dragged out of our warm houses to practice for winter concerts from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Most of us had other things to do like algebra or English homework, but thanks to the dedication of both the B and E-blockers, and our parents, our year ' s accom- plishments were made possible. I enjoyed being a member of the Madrigal Singers because it is a serious and challeng- ing music course, yet I had fun learning new ways to perfect my singing voice. As usual our Winter and Spring concerts really showed off our newly honed skills in singing! High C is this high. Three little angels (at least in sound!) Quick! What ' s the next word? The traditional purpose of the Treble Choir at Minnechaug has always been to make an easy transition from Junior High cho- ral groups to the more mature choral groups in High School. Our director, Mr. Raymond Drury, is the best. He decided that Treble Choir, our new title, was a better representation of the Soprano- Alto sound of our voices. If you attended our Winter and Spring concerts, you would have wit- nessed our flexibility in song. We even sang in German! I look for- ward to continuing in this excel- lent choral program in the years to come. ACTIVITIES 149 THE THEATRE FALCON PLAYERS ACTIVITIES 150 The envelope please . . . I served as a guidance aide this year and felt good that I could help out as much as I did. I remember the mountains of filing — student schedules mostly — and how busy we were especially during the first few weeks in the year. It appeared as if everyone in the school de- manded a schedule change. Perhaps the most interesting thing, howev- er, about being a guidance aide was meeting the new students. I fre- quently acted as a guide on their first day of school. Getting to M or K hall can be so confusing to a new- comer, and it was rewarding to be able to help. Kim Eaton and Dina Warner make filing look like fun. ACTIVITIES 153 l l 6 BUSINESS AIDES Cindy Roj and Cricket Barnes ACCOUNT for the excess paperwork in the business office. LIBRARY AIDES What do I love about being a Library Aide? I love, I) being the only one around when 5 people with 5000 books need help signing out all at oncej 2) the feeling of having my favorite pen stolen from the desk; 3) hearing the executive click of my heels on the linoleum of the magazine roomj 4) the lush green carpet which reminds me of grass and all the paper in the books which reminds me of trees, to give me that ' woodsy ' feeling. I have power. I can fine people. I can re- fuse somebody the right to sign out a book. And 1 have rewards. I cherish the salty fra- grance of a new book. Yes, it is a rewarding job, indeed. But the most book-shattering thing 1 remember is this: It was a dull day, nothing to do. I was sitting at the desk, disconnecting paper- clips when a girl walked in. She laid the book upon the desk directly in front of me. I then realized the book was ticking! She told me it would detonate in 10 seconds. I had to think fast. Quickly, 1 ran into the A.V. room and hurled the book into the sink, destroying the mechanism. I single-handed- ly saved the library from ruin. What power! — Laura Engel Did you say 20 overdue books? I thought Freshmen didn ' t even know where the library was! 154 ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES 155 Mf nl jfOOD ,,.._- jjl wP i tender) tonte YOUR GENEROSITY ilSKPO) 41 CD phi 2; 4 I K fM Travel jdot K. ffombk Hfc H . 0 ? fe, ;.- Ota- ::r-U-: ' lm : I w m@M i| O m Pn r { r fci nd Vfe ' sjairtc arc ADS 157 PIZZA PUB PIZZA If S EWKBd Tsr- . i I GRINDERS ITALIAN DINNERS = W . , S «X ;a COCKTAILS h ■ i ■ ' ■ ' -i ' -i ? Tina Desai MANY THANKS - The 1986 yearbook was a tremendously diffi- cult undertaking. It required a good deal of help to materialize. WE DID IT! ADS 167 Another year over. But this time it ' s not just another year ' , one that I ' ll scratch off with barely a eulogy as I did last year and the one before — all the years blending into a haze of similar colors, calendars, and Christmases. No, this year, that ' s all changed. This time, come September, I won ' t be wandering sleepily through H-hall, a little em- barrassed to be an upperclassman, still baffled by the Minnechaug floorplan. As December snow falls softly from the sky, I won ' t be hanging around the lunch table gawking and gasping at the unlikely couples who were actually going to the Semi together. No PAVAS (PAVAS?), no Hawaiian Dance. It ' s all so overwhelming. One minute, you ' re a vulnerable victim of The Arena, the next, they ' re handing you your diploma. It ' s hard to believe so much time has slipped by. And then you come upon a tangible relic of the past — an old photo- graph, perhaps -and you know it. It ' s happened. It ' s really true — you ' ve grown up. As the year dies, so much yet endures, and gives to it a lasting breath. Pictures, letters, friendships, yearbooks and, of course, the intan- gible souvenirs: the memories . . . Memories of love, of learning, of life . . . Memories of not only friends in school but also a friend in a school . . . Memories that will make me sometimes happy, sometimes sad, and always grateful . . . Thank you, Minnechaug, for this year and for four of the best years of my life. I ' ll miss you. And you know, I ' ll always remember, . . . Tina Desai 9 years ago, Chris Dunklee, Jeff Jones, Todd Taylor, Scott Makuch, and Loel Tronsky were bud- dies. They are still friendly, but are now headed in their own directions. Their time together has ended, as has all of ours-but it was a time to remember. SPECIAL PEOPLE ail ,!tf§S s mm w
