That ' s a fact, Jack. Bill Murray in Stripes Here ' s another fine mess you ' ve gotton us into. Oliver Hardy Falcons are small, powerful birds that are related to the hawk and can be found throughout the world. The falcons aerial strength and agility are excep- tionally good. They use this ability in combination with their powerful, curved, sharply taloned feet, to capture their prey. A small, curved, sharp beak with a tooth like projection is used to tear their food apart which, is a diet consisting of birds, small mammals, and insects. Falcons can be identified by their bare legs. The falcon is symbolic of the spirit of Minne- chaug; it is strong, free, and proud as it soars above all others. The falcon represents our school as it is the name of our athletic teams and school mascot. Who will Remember the life we know now? On this day 32 year old, Sally Ride, America ' s first space- bound woman, and her crew began their jour- ney aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. Ride ' s mission was to operate the Shuttles 50 foot long Remote Manipulator System, to pluck a German-built experimental package called the Shuttle Pallet Satellite out of the cargo bay and let it orbit freely into space. The Challenger flight was cut short on June 24th due to bad weather and made its prema- ture landing at Edward ' s Air Force Base. When asked why she was chosen for the flight, she answered, A good educational background and one that showed I could learn new things readily. 13 Minnechaug High .... School is a pattern of concrete, wood, glass, paint, and brick; yet it is people who make it unique. The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time. Abe Lincoln Our task now is not to fix the blame for the past but to fix the course for the future. J. F. K. This country will not be a good place for any of us to live unless we make it a good place to live in. Theodore Roosevelt. UiiiMchaug Regional High School Media Center 621 Main Street Wilrjraham, Mass. 01095 Having completed another summer, we enter the new school year wiser and more mature. Summer break has given us the op- portunity to relax, enjoy ourselves, and grow through new experiences. It ' s given us time to sort out our feelings and thoughts for the future. As school begins we also begin to plan a direction for the new year, some of us for our lives. We anticipate reuniting with friends and also in making new ones whom we can share our good times and bad times with. Hopefully this year will be a terrific one for all people, not just here at Minnechaug, but throughout the world. ■■I ■■III ■■• ■■■■■■■■■take 1 scene seniors J minnechaug presents: the class of ' 84 starring Joseph M. You grow up the day you have your first real laugh-at yourself. -Bernard Meltzer class officers Ted Moore (president), Mr. Martin Kibbe (class advisor), Rick Thorpe (vice president), Kelly Morissette (secretary), Carole Cibb (treasury). Some of Minnechaug ' s most enjoyable experiences were the result of the class officers ' hard work. Class president, Ted Moore, with Vice President Rick Thorpe, Secretary Carol Gibb, and Treasurer Kelly Morrissette, all worked closely together with Mr. Martin Kibbe (class advisor) to ensure some smooth, eventful years. Had they not taken the time to come up with unique ideas, organize activities, take care of paper work, and work well together; nothing would ' ve been accomplished nor been as successful! Freshman year, they spon- sored a dance in which the seventh and eighth graders were invited to Minnechaug. Sophomore year, with the support of the homeroom representatives, the class offi- cers promoted the Dunkin Donut ' s coupon drive. Addi- tionally, the traditional class ring sale occurred during sophomore year. Then, Ju- nior year was the year of the magazine drive, which was very unique in style. An as- sembly was held in the audi- torium, incentive prizes were shown, and a goal was set. Never before was our class spirit so evident. Finally, this class spirit was continued into Senior year, the Fifties Days Dance, the Senior Breakfast, the Senior Prom, the Senior Banquet, and finally, Gradu- ation. Four years ago, when he be- came our class advisor, he had no previous experience as an advisor. He had no idea what he was getting himself into. It didn ' t stop him from taking the job. Mr. Kibbe was not bothered by all of the hassles, frus- trations, and time involved in work- ing with our class. He not only helped to make our funding drives a great success, but he increased the spirit and motivation of our class. Although he has been a hockey coach for twelve years, he was still willing to give the job his best shot. He believes that being a class advisor has made him a better person. He enjoys meeting people and learning from the students he works with so closely. He especially enjoyed work- ing with Ted Moore and our other loyal class officers. We can all say with honesty that Mr. Kibbe has made our four years here at Minnechaug interesting and rewarding. We wish him the best of luck in the coming years. £ ' ? administration ill I Superintendent, Francis P. Reddington Principal, Jerry A. Badger Assistant Principal, Helen A. I rushed home from school to tell my mother the exciting events that had happened at school. As I burst through the door, I realized that my mother, Jean O ' Neil, was dead. That fact is one of the hardest facts I ' ve had to face up to, realizing my mother is dead. As tears trickle down my face one-by-one, my exciting event has left me, and I change to awareness-aware of the truth that my mother was more than a teacher, she was everyone ' s friend and she touched the lives of many. She loved Broadway, especially Joseph and Chorus Line. Listening to the things that my mother loved really upset me, but afterwards, I relaxed and slowly left my state of depression, knowing how many lives she filled with happiness and joy. jean O ' Neil went on, until she could go no further. She was most of all a mother; but also a teacher, a person who made many lives special, in her own loving way. I will never forget her, and anyone who is a part of her life will never forget her either. I can admit their is an emptiness in my life, but I rejoice in the times she gave me, instead of depressing myself in the fact that she ' s gone. Gone but not forgotten Your love we still feel You ' ll always be with us Mrs. O ' Neil You were always a friend beyond compare. You taught us that English took a great deal of care However, above all things that you prized you always loved life without compromise We ' ll always love you wherever you are but somehow I feel that your not all that far. candids 86 Thanks go out to the following for art work: Kirsten Karplus Carla Alberici Tracy Christianson Sandy Cooly Ann Fath Tess Ahlberg Kim Schelb Tracy DeGrandpre Dawn Shetler John Crafts Becky Wilson (specia Photo shy teachers: Diane Heiney Dr., English James Matroni, Ind. The squad remained undefeated throughout the season while scoring a total of three points. The highlight of the season come in the last regular season game as the Falcons crushed arch-rival Classical, 35-14. It marked the first time in several years the Falcons beat the Bulldogs, and also meant a birth in the Super Bowl. Leading the team through this outstanding season were senior tri-captains Rick Thorpe, Geoff Thomas, and Karl Chambers. Thorpe and Chambers were top notch offensive backs along with thousand-yard gainer Dan Macero. Macero also led the team and league in touchdowns and total points. Also playing well offensively were seniors Mike Vicowski and Pete Sares and junior kicker Mike Trombley performed admirably while receivers Will Tyschen and Glen Garvey fought everything thrown to them. The defensive and offensive line was a key ingredient as they provided excellent blocking and pass coverage and accumulated many sacks and fumbles. Leading the way was Captain Thomas along with burly Sterling Dickinson, Ron Young, Bernt Auslanter, Pete Alberci and sophomore stu- dent Mike Chambers. Head coach Mr. Dave Bennett, in charge for only two years, was assisted by Mr. Golferi, Mr. Mina, Mr. Brunell, and Mr. Sullivan. She was appreciated and respected as was Senior Captain, Donna Farrell, whose efforts made the team the best. Seniors, Kris Gwatkin, Carole Gibb, and Tyna Hurley, all displayed their talents and showed much school spirit. The underclassmen made up most of the team and represented the team well. Both finished among the top ten in total points. Also supplying offensive firepower were Senior spark- plug, Joe Michaud and Sophomore Jeff Jones. The defense meanwhile was anchored by Senior fullback, Ted Moore, Sophomore, John O ' Shaughnessy, and all- star Senior goalie Jim Boucher, who consistently made spectacular saves. The team tied for second in a strong B- division and earned a berth in the Western Mass. Tourna- ment. The Falcons lost a tough game to Ludlow, 3-2 to end their season. Led by captains Kim Mawaka and Karen Madden, the team won three games against A-division opponents in- cluding Cathedral, Chicopee, and Classical. Mary and Jodi Miller and Michelle Taylor led the scoring attack. The fullback line of Kelly Burke, Karen Madden, and Pam Morrisette kept the opponents from the goal. Halfbacks Sharon Nebel, Sherri Habel, and Anne Fabbri controlled midfield. Seniors Kim Mawaka, Karen Madden, Kelly Burke, Heather Rumplick, Michelle Methe, Maureen McCaffrey, Daria Dolecki, and Kelly Morrisette performed well each game. The Fal- cons remained undefeated with a record of 11-0. This year, the female gymnasts were faced with trying to maintain the winning tradition established by previous teams. For the past three years the Falcons have won the Western Massachusetts Championship. The question this year was-could they possibly obtain it again? These fifteen attractive, talented, and dedicated gymnasts began training in Au- gust and continued training three hours a day, six days a week for 3 V2 months. With much determination, they worked hard to perfect routines in the four competi- tive events-uneven bars, floor exercise, balance beam, and side horse vaulting. Just how has the girls gymnastics team maintained their success? Well, it takes two dedicated coaches, Pat (Grinch) Lynch and Pat (Crash) Cascio, to inspire the team with valuable instruction, con- stant encouragement, and emotional sup- port. The teams managers, Carol Shine and Jon Burgess, were also, two very valu- able behind the scenes contributors. They perform different duties to help the library run more smoothly. A library aide will check out a book for a student, place books back on the shelves, get periodicals upon request, and file those overdue slips. If one ever was in need of information and didn ' t know where to find it, ask a library aide. This is another part of their job. They are a great help to the library. The answer is quite simple — the feeling of accomplishment and never ending sense of satisfaction. Being an editor requires lots of hard work and determination. It also means commitment. Long hours of cropping pictures, doing layouts and writing copy, as well as after school meeting, are all a part of this commitment. It ' s a job that ' s fun and rewarding, but along with that comes the bad times. (Ask any yearbook member!!) This year ' s editors overcame many loopholes and hardships. Trying to produce a yearbook better than the 1982-1983 Falcon was a challenge. Through it all, our advisor Mrs. Maiwald stood by to encourage us and offer help when we needed it. Music s an entertaining, essential part of all our daily lives. It is safe to say that there is no ane who does not enjoy some kind of music. Minnechaug High School realizes this and orovides a program that allows its students to extend their talents to the highest level Dossible. A first year student in the choral program itarts out at the first level. For girls this is the girls chorus and for the males, the concert choir. Concert choir is entered by audition along with the honors choir, the Madrigal singers, which requires special talent and out of school performances. Minnechaug ' s music department is well represented every year at the Western-Mass District Competition. Many of these students go on to compete and represent their school at ligher levels. All students also have the opportunity to participate in an annual folk festival and a music drama production put on every two years. Both continually result in fine performances enjoyed by much of the community.
