We ' ve got but a few months or so and we ' re gone, But we ' ll always remember the laughter and song. We learned as we went, we changed and we grew, With poise and with pride we always came through. Whatever we do and wherever we go, The strength of this learning will certainly show. How can we describe the feelings we ' ve known, All that you mean to us may never be shown. We say our final goodbyes and smile as we do, We say we ' re happy to go, but we know its not true. In success or failure you ' re the first of our picks We ' ll always remember the spirit of seventy-six. Model Congress Weeks of hard work forming an ecology bill for Model Congress paid off for representatives Rich Goodreau, Dave Swift, Tracy Wolstencroft and Lee Poulopoulos. They spon- sored a dance for the school, made Christmas wreaths and garlands, entered a catapult contest and won first place (al- though the day before the con- test the arm got stuck at the top and broke off because of the cold!). J.C.L. also held a Family Night supper, members went to H.C.C. for Classics Day and an- other scrapbook was started for national competition. The J.C.L. state newspaper had headquarters at Minnechaug since Ginny Saxe was publish- ing editor. She was also secre- tary of our J.C.L. . . . Mary Bie- litz was treasurer, and Clif Averill the Vice President. The President was Mike Budyn- kiewicz and the advisor Mrs. Ats, both of whom were around a lot after school. Mathletes cos {Arc sin (-V2) + Arc cos 5 13] To most of us, the above equation would be Greek, but even with Mr. Granaudo ' s accent and his scratchy handwriting, the kids in Mathletes would be able to whip the answer out in two seconds flat. Mathletes have been invincible this year, main- taining a first place position all along. Practice is once a week after school, and the rest of the week is spent deciphering work sheets. Tech Crew Did you ever think that a stage set was the result of paint fights, sore thumbs, lost tools, and hours of work every night night after school? The tech crew started off the year by re- organizing the back stage area so they could find all of last year ' s equipment. Mr. Sawyer advised, Mr. Ryan designed the sets and Clif Averill managed the building. The group was given about two months to complete sets for productions. Near the end of the time limit, the stage, back stage, orchestra pit and nearby halls were filled with flats be- ing hammered together with this year ' s new tools. The group had alot of fun though, and as Sue Wilson says, The hardest workers are the ones behind the scenes. FIRST ROW: Chris Phillips, Pat Packard, Beth Robison, Sherry Sweetman, Linda Welsh. Schools are all alike wherever they are and Alejan- dro Morales, an exchange student from Mexico, proved this after a year at Minnechaug. He liked our high school and the United States but thought the weather was very cold up here! A junior this year, Alex had no language barrier problem, except when students tried to talk to him in Spanish! He liked living in an American household (the Kern ' s of Hampden) and the T.V. show Monty Python but he still was homesick at the beginning of his stay. Yearbook Staff The yearbook staff were the students who did a lot of work and got little credit. They made the layouts (in many cases over and over.), cropped pictures, chased down coaches, advisors and team captains. They took a lot of pressure off their editors except when they followed the rules: Deadlines are made to be broken! But the Yearbook staff will get their just reward — soon they ' ll be the editors! P.A.V.A.S. fcL tfi With its 61 members, the Performing and Vi- sual Arts Society has done more in 75-76 than in any previous year. They put on the annual Talent Show, Art Symposium, Arts Con- test, and sponsored a Harvest Dance. P.A- .V.A.S. contributed money to Channel 57 and they also bought the film WHY MAN CREATES for the school. But none of these things would have happened with- out those Monday meetings after school, nor without the two advisors, Mr. Amerman and Mr. Spencer. Who could forget Mr. Spen- cer ' s referee whistle when things got a little too rowdy! Talent Show 1000 people pushed into the school audito- rium to see the P.A- .V.A.S. Talent Show — the largest crowd ever. For a nominal fee of 50 t the audience saw 20 acts — all of which centered on the theme Vaudeville . Co-di- rectors Ann Piaget and Jenny Osmond, with the help of advisor Mr. Amerman did a fantas- tic job picking the acts that appeared. The acts consisted of come- dians, vocalists, bands, jugglers, unicyclers and dancers. Among the highlights were Caro- lyn Johnson ' s song Hey Big Spender! Bridget Walt ' s dancing, and the Varsity Cheer- leader ' s song and dance routine. Yearbook The Yearbook office was always cold and quiet, a good place to take a nap — until deadlines were due, that is. Then poor El KaBarb (Editor-in-chief Barb Gibson) ran around trying to help everyone think of section titles or find lost pictures and B.K. (alias Bob King — Assis- tant Editor) spent a lot of time on the phone trying to get Walter, the photog- rapher, and not succeed- ing. Everyone wondered how they got conned into this deal in the first place, especially advisor D.B. (Mr. Bernstein), who kept handing back layouts with REDO! written all over them. But the Yearbook got done, even though no one knew what home- work or free time was for many weeks. But the Yearbook was great, so it was worth it — We hope! Even through down-pourings of rain, crowd spirit was great and the will to win stronger than ever. Team captains Dave Gernux, Mark Strange, Vin Haggerty, and Ken Quackenbush kept team moral high, but the good defense and offense helped also. The J.V. Football Team had a fine year with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. They should add a lot of new talent next year to the Varsity team. The Freshmen Football Team had a near perfect season (7-1) and hold promise for the future. Falcons Trample Valley Wheel Opponents The Cross Country Team only had one fear ... to have to practice with Coach Kennedy. He was the one who used the hard speed workouts. Aside from that, what was unusual about this year ' s team was that they enjoyed running. No one took the shortcuts and few skipped practices (even the rain ones). At the end of the season many team members were still running every day. Somewhere all the work paid off. The team placed 4th out of 19 schools in the Western Mass. Tournament. They had an excellent season winning clutch meets and clinching Valley Wheel. With an unbeaten record in their league, the team ' s overall record was 12-2. The most important meet of the season (against Southwick) was won by one point. , i immm aQn E.L. Victory Biggest Led by coaches Pat Cascio and Pat Lynch, the team came in 1st in their league and are co-champions of Western Mass. The team reached their top physical condition by jogging around the track in the rain and then exercising to the beat of Beach Boys records! But not all practices were like this. Long, hard work paid off at West- ern Mass. for many swimmers. Captain Sue Shaw and Cory McGuill were triple gold medalists. The 400 freestyle relay team of Sue Shaw, Sue Doten, Shannon Leone and Cory McGuill broke the West- ern Mass. and State records by 5 seconds. Field Hockey Pioneer Valley Co-Champs Coach Reena Mom Bucknell took her team from a 6th place finish last season to co-champions this season. With a record of 8 wins — 1 loss — 2 ties, the Field Hockey Team really came on strong against their ri- val, Southwick, with a win of 2-1. But with Snake , Chaug (a green bear), and He- lia (the hippo) for mascots, how could the team go wrong? Another factor in the team ' s success this year was a superstition. Everyone took a piece of turf from the new playing field and put it on the opponent ' s field! Keeping Spirit Alive We helped the teams by raising crowd spirit. ... so says Joanne Ingraham, captain of the Cheering Squad. Getting spectator buses for away meets, making posters for upcoming games, announce- ments for important matches, and raising school spirit for the team is only some of the work Cheer- leaders did. The cheerleaders were also in the Talent Show for the first time this year. Dressed in gym shorts, football shirts, and shoulder pads, the squad did a booming song and dance number, Hey Big Scorer! MBwnwpjaa Falcons Gain 1-1 Tie With State Champs West Side Heading a chip from Al the move Hel- linger, Walt Silveira scored clinching a dead- lock with powerhouse West Springfield. This helped to bring the total record for the team up to 10 wins — 5 losses — 2 ties. The win- ning streak of the team was almost ruined when Coach Whalen gave the team new shirts. But when the next game was lost, the shirts were taken away. As soon as they won their next game, though, the shirts were re- turned. First place in Division li was taken by the Falcons. HIIIBBPISH l3Sf?4IS S ' l i ' ' TPS;iK -it Mi Falcons Streak Through Wright Division The bell-ringing crowds didn ' t need the new shirts (with the player ' s name on the back) to tell the team members apart. Even when they started wearing face masks, the players were easy to recognize; Boyder by his skating, Jebber by his slap shot, and the captain, Kinger, was easy to spot because the opponents always double- teamed him. Reddington, Silveira, and Stecher formed a checking second line, and a strong third line included Rodrigues, Palm, and Hough. The trio of Kibbe, Sweeney, and Costello anchored the defense, but new- comers Kubik and Mackintosh played like pros. A team would be nothing without a goalie, and this team had two — Bob Majkut and Ralph Skip Guyer. But perhaps most of all, it was the team spirit that allowed the ice Falcons to keep on winning straight through the season. Girls Bid For Valley Wheel Title A winner never stops proving it! and the girls ' basketball team never did. All the games were important but two standouts were the Agawam and Longmeadow games. The team won them both, helping them to extend their Valley Wheel winning streak to 26 games. Speed, defense, poise, and drive more than made up for their lack of height, but Coach Bucknell kept trying to make the girls grow anyway by feeding them oranges at half-time, and stopping at McDonald ' s for french fries and Big Mac ' s on the drive home from away games. Varsity tri-captains Maryellen Murphy, Terry Kasper, and Diana Demetrius worked hard following the team motto: When you believe in something strong enough — it will happen! And this team made things happen. 9 J m m Short Falcons Have High Hopes Faculty members helped the boys ' basketball team into shape. They all practiced after school and during vacation: the team for the experience and the teachers for the exercise. It was fun, but Coach Girotti felt the team needed some music to psych them up before games. However, after listening to Aerosmith, he changed his mind. Most of the team members were juniors. Co-captains Dave Gernux and John Yazel were the only seniors, while Hugh Lombardi was the single sopho- more. The Falcons (alias: the Celtics) practiced their favorite move — the jam, razzed Dude Burke, and got along great. This helped when the pressure built, especially in games against Putnam or E.L. Almost everybody would agree that the most exciting game was against Agawam, when they tied the sco re, went into double over-time, the clock broke, and then lost by one point in the last three seconds. Skiers Skate To Victory No matter if they won or lost, the boys ' ski team always stopped at McDonalds on the way home and Coach Sousa bought the team manager Wesswe (Leslie) Ellard a ham- burger and french fries, even though she never wanted him to. All of the meets were at Mt. Tom so the team would pile into the van and scream at Tom Boilard for all the flying objects whizzing around. Captain Jeff Porter carved his way to victory on a bum knee and a pair of red hot Olin Mark ll ' s, as did Don Tucker on his Rossi ST Comps. Whoever heard about a ski coach forgetting his skis on the day of a meet? Well, the girls ' coach Mr. Deely did. The whole team backtracked to his house and once there, the girls decided they had to meet Mrs. Deely. She passed inspection, so the team continued on to their meet. The backbone of the team were the underclassmen — Sue Davis, Beth Sitnik, Dianne Mammarelli, Beth Tucker, Lisa Cambo and Sally Johnson. The most improved skiers were freshmen Robin Lis and Kim Loftus. Co-captain Ann McGranaghan was the most consistent skier — always coming in 1st-3rd place in the meets. Even though the team was young, there were a few seniors around: Co- captain Jill Smith, Paula Silva, Carol Debonis, Betsy Jody Jordan and Carol Tucker. Swimmers Make Splash In Western Mass. Members of the boys ' swim team had a special way of greeting each other, they howled. And they barked at Coach Miller and Assistant Coach Win- ston, who grew a beard to continue the tradition of Mr. Worthley. At the Cathedral meet, the team didn ' t bark though, they ate lollipops because the Cathedral coach was always sucking on one! A cou- ple of team members wore hats to the meets for good luck, but with all the great swimmers on the team they didn ' t have to. Co-captains Mark Officer and Andy Smith were really outstanding, as were senior Scott Semle, junior Scott Goyer, and sopho- mores Kendall McCarthy and Chris Miller. i 126 Young . . . Talented . . . And Raring To Go Pat Lynch was the new head coach for the girls ' gymnastic team and ex-Minnechaug gymnast, Jeanne Benoit, her assis- tant. Freshmen made up 45% of the varsity competitors and there were no Seniors at all. T wo frosh, Diane Robinson and Judy Kasper qualified for states along with Captain Jill Pippi Wolcott, The team looked towards team mascots, Ernie, Minniehympachaugapotomas and Mike the Clown, for moral support. Even though the team was young, it was the best beam team Minnechaug ever had. 126 Gymnasts Floor Opponents The parrallel bars and the rings were the weakest events at the beginning of the season, but by the end, Coaches Tom Goodman and George Hewitt admitted they had im- proved so much these were among their strongest events. Captains Ed Cardetti and Fred Miller were strong all around competitors. Chris Cazalet excelled in vaulting, rings, floor and the side horse. Scott Francis, a junior, was strong on the rings and sophomore Paul Lemieux added to the total team accumulation with his floor routines.
