THOMPSON RETIRES Mr. Charles Thompson, head of Minnechaug ' s Guidance Department from 1958 to 1972 and a guidance counselor since 1972, retired in January. During his seventeen years of service, the school ' s population increased five-fold; and Mr. Thompson ' s valuable contributions in many areas helped to meet the challenge of rapid growth. He developed the Guidance Department. Furthermore, he was instrumental in compiling the guidance library, creating contacts for college visitations, and establishing such innovative programs as Work Study and EIIP. In the school ' s early years, he planned the original curriculum and recruited teachers. Later Mr. Thompson chaired the evaluation committee which gained Minnechaug its initial accreditation in 1961. He also opened channels through which many students have obtained financial aid by organizing the Minnechaug Scholarship Committee. Rounding out his activities, Mr. Thompson for seven years (1962-1969) coached the track team which sustained a still unbroken record of sixty wins and two losses. We recognize with gratitude his long, effective and dedicated service and wish Mr. Thompson a satis- fying retirement. ' ■ ■ - Quotations taken from THE FARMERS ' ALMANAC. Antonia, nicknamed Tony by her friends here, was on the Gymnastics Team and enjoyed other sports too, especially horseback riding. She feels, however, that Minnechaug students take sports too seriously and education not seriously enough. Comparing schools, she said that in Germany, stu- dents have more freedom and less homework. Also, most schools are not co-ed. She herself has studied five languages and speaks three fluently. After completing high school, she in- tends to study medicine. Both Tony and Mrs. Davies noted that, while there are distinct differences between Minnechaug and their own schools, there are, surprisingly enough, many more similarities. They enjoyed their year and broad- ened our exposure to other countries and cultures. Mrs. Thelma Davies came from England with her three children to be an exchange teacher this past year. Although there she worked as an educational specialist, here she taught English and American Literature, Types of Writing, and English II. In discussions she noted some of the differences be- tween English schools and ours. The grading system is different. Students do not receive letter grades during a term but rather are tested formally at the end of a course on all the material covered. The schools are generally smaller and students are required to take more subjects, as many as eight or nine. Also, dress codes are enforced, in some schools. Despite the differences, she concluded after sever- al months here, Young people basically are all the same the world over. p. J. Arduino D. Baldyga L. Bartolucci M Belanger W. Black A. Booth D. THE CLASS OF ' 75 ' S ALMANAC In eighth grade (remember way back then) we said, I don ' t want to go to high school, and See you next year. Funny, when we got to high school we never wanted to go back to junior high. Unfortunately we grew apart from a lot of our close friends that we were going to be sure to see next year. It seemed impossible but it happened. Freshman year all the Wilbraham girls seemed to be enchanted by the Hampden guys. The Hampden girls in turn were checking out the Wilbraham guys. Freshman year was also challenge day for football players. Brad Heck and Dave Vivian clashed for the position of quarterback. Joe Shadduck and Mike Crowley showed everybody up at halfback. Ricky Scott, Cindy Whitehill, Edmund Hartt, Allison Green, Karen DeVVolf , Judy Spinn, and Cindy Dwyer brought the freshman class fame by beating the seniors and winning the regional One-Act Play Contest. From there they went on to make a very good showing at the state contest. That same year, Lee Desotell showed herself an outstanding gymnast. Freshman year study halls were in the auditorium. Mrs. Wagner ' s homeroom was on the stage and Mr. Castonguay ' s was stuck in the pit. The cafeteria was located where the cooking labs are now. In athletics, hockey was then just a new sport at Minnechaug. Mike Manning surprised everybody with his power hitting in base- ball. . . Then, Gary Pabis and Ned Deane were the men. . . .John Williams came on the scene freshman year. . . Basketball was the sport to watch, . .As freshmen, lovebirds still broke up by passing notes. Freshman year was the great Pancake Supper and it was the year that Norman Drapeau made his debut in Fiddler on the Roof. The drama department also performed its first rock opera. Tommy was a great success and received a standing ovation. Back then we had a fantastic marching band and Swing Band Show. Mike Getchell could be seen beating away on the drums. Paul Cilley saw some action on the Varsity Soccer team and Chris Gillis was the Freshman Fish. At the end of freshman year we said, See you over the summer, but we hardly ever did. . . That summer we discovered beer, but not how to handle it. Sophomore year brought many new teachers and faces. Mr. Dexter retired and Mr. Badger became the new principal. Our second year the guys all went after the freshman girls and the sophomore girls started looking around at the older guys. It was the year of Hogan ' s Heroes. Brenda Shea, Debbie Churchill, and Beth Barish moved away. To dd Willey started showing some real hockey playing ability. We did away with monitors and the Student Council president quit. . . That year the courtyard was the place to hang out. Then came the addition and the action shifted to the new cafeteria and J-hall. . . . My Fair Lady was a success, with Bobbye Foley and Bill Fumo in the lead roles. Also in ' 72 the nursery school started at Minnechaug. . .Jack Post, Rick King, Mary Ann Haggerty, and Patti Nodell were the Big seniors. . . Rick Forni and Tommy Morris could be seen riding around on Tom ' s motorcycle. In sports that year John Brennan became known as an outstanding runner, and Tony Leone was the new soccer star. Sandy Kapp broke all the swimming records. The girls attempted to start a track team. . .Peg Mierzwinski was playing a hell of a basketball game, and Pete Bachmann was hot under the hoop, scoring 31 points in one game. But the Ski Team didn ' t have enough snow. Sophomore year we had Chinese fire drills on the way to Friendly ' s after football games. Kids turned to beer blasts and found good times and bad by smoking. Mike Dodson entered the scene, followed by Joe Lepley. Elaine Phelps and Jeri Dow came to be known as two outstanding musicians. That year Dawn Clark was Miss Teen of Springfield. . .Mr. Eakins left for Florida and Mrs. Kline for Israel. . . . Scott died. . . The juniors (bah!) won the One-Act Play Contest but Allison Green was named best actress. At the end of sophomore year we said, Junior year should be the best because we will have our licenses and we won ' t have to worry about college. Junior year the seniors (bah! ) won the One-Act Play Contest. . . the hockey team made it to the play-offs. . . Scott Porter was the oo-ahh , and Nancy Thomson was the senior girl that most looked up to. Bob Rodrigues hurt his knee in the first football game of the season and was out for most of the year. . . Quill and Scroll made a big hit on Valentines Day. . . Kim Booth developed into an outstanding gymnast, taking a first on the unevens. Tom Daly left for the Academy and Allison Green for New York. The Pizza Pub took over as the number one spot. Internal Open Campus and soft ice cream cones were innovat- ed junior year. We had our licenses but all we did was ride around looking for something to do. . . Many started working at part-time jobs. Junior year was Speech and Drama class with Mrs. Wagner and Thoreau and Emerson with Miss Latino. . . In ' 73 guys and girls started noticing each other, within the class, and many meaningful relationships sprang up. . .Mr. LedDuke got a lot of crazy juniors in Driver Ed. Class. Junior year the cheerleaders changed to a bouncier form. . . We had Square Dancing in co-ed gym. That year, Steve Pianowski pitched a great season. . . Mike Crowley and Nancy Shea won the Dance Marathon. The Junior Carnival was a big flop. . . Mike Mc- Govern came on the scene; so did Betty Grillo, Peggy Trabulsi, and Carol Driscoll. . . There were one hundred grinders left over from the Art Symposium. Junior year more drinking went on. There was a swinging New Year ' s Eve Party. . . Many girls had their hair, cut short. . . SAT ' s came along and Joe Whitmeyer beat everybody. . . We used to say, I can ' t wait to get out of this school. In the spring guys would stand by the pool doors and watch Jane Burt yell at the Syncho Team. The girls ' Softball team went to the play-offs. . .The drama department decided to do something different that spring. A Bit of Ourselves , an entirely student- written production, opened up many eyes that had been closed for too long- The end of junior year brought a finish to lots of fun. That summer was spent working for the most part along with some partying. We started meeting kids from other schools. Dating and partying were no longer confined to Minnechaug. When we returned in September so many familiar faces were gone from the roster — Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. LedDuke, Mary Whit- meyer, Jim Williamson, Barb Stirton, Renee Desnoyers, . Pam Samra, Braden Davis, Kathy Costello, Rick Morgan, to name a few. Mrs. Kline and Mr. Eakins came back. Well, it is senior year. We didn ' t get Open Campus until December. . . The soccer team made it to the quarter-finals by beating Leominster. . . Doug Robinson made himself known at the goal post and Rick Desanti was named to the All-League Soccer Team. The Senior play, Adaptation, with Ricky Scott, Cindy Whitehill, Charlie Russell, and Edmund Hartt (does the cast sound fam- iliar?), directed by Dawn Clark, won the One-Act Play Contest (yeah!). . .Nancy Raymond took a first in diving and was named the Most Valuable Swimmer in Western Mass. Tony Leone broke the tradition and joined Men ' s Chorus. . . Allyson Skipton was cited as a very talented writer by the National Council of Teachers of English. There are still many months of senior year left. We still haven ' t figured out what our senior prank will be. Another question that is still unanswered is Who are the big men and women on campus? At the end of this year we will probably be saying I really don ' t want to leave. We won ' t be seeing each other as often; some we won ' t ever see again. But just as each year in high school brought new friends, faces, and ideas, so too will the years ahead. IN MEMORY OF: SCOTT P. COOKE Scott could always get along with everybody. No matter what type of person you were, Scott could get along with you. — S.B. a; v . . . always grinning. — P.B. . . . never down in the dumps. . . . HAPPY . . . the life of the basketball team. . . . did things from his heart, not for other people ' s eyes. — M. T. PEACE OKAY? — Scott Scott was one of the nicest kids I ' ve known at Minnechaug. He never had anything bad to say about anyone and I ' m glad that I was his girlfriend. — Sarah Words are beautiful. But without the facial expressions that go with them, the words may lose their meaning. Just by looking into the eyes of Scott ' s friends, one can see how much these people really care.
