This year, those players who attained that record had another fine year as seniors. This year, a different frosh football team again compiled a fine record. When the harriers, out of breath, pains in their sides, and legs aching, stopped running, they found themselves on the top of a hill. There was a trophy on the hill, and it was theirs to share. The Minnechaug Cross Country team, with a league record of 6-1, had tied for first place. It is undoubtable that Cross Country is a tough sport. The team member often runs in oblivion, the rest of the school simply does not know he is alive. Thus, the harriers race is a hard one. For, he cannot strive for the popularity that a star football or soccer player will often have heaped upon him. The Har- rier can only run for himself and for his team. When it ' s over, the Harrier knows he has done something worthwhile. BOTTOM ROW: E. Robison, J. Durfee, P. Johnson, A. Tupper, R. Brickley. SECOND ROW: Coach Bamford, M. Kelleher, M. Mariono, F. The Minnechaug hoop team, coached by Mr. Whalen, had one of its finest seasons ever, winning the Valley Wheel title for the first time. Things looked bad when the Fal- cons lost their opening game in the Agawam dungeon. But experience and hard work paid off as the Falcons, led by co-captains Gary Pabis and Joe Twining, came storming back to defeat Agawam twice and clinch the league ti- tle two weeks before their season ended. The key to their success was the ability of the players to work as a team and not to make a lot of costly mistakes as in past seasons. Starters on this year ' s championship squad included Pabis and Twining, Senior guard Bob Mierzwinski and forward Kevin Kissel, a Ju- nior. The fifth spot on the starting team was filled by either Ned Deane, Jeff Hastings or John McKay. Graduating seniors who didn ' t start, but still made valuable contributions to the team ' s success, were Carl Kibbe, Mark Gibson and Nick Lynch. All in all, it was a season to be remembered, one in which the team set a goal for itself and worked long and hard to achieve it. The most important point of the season was that it set a standard that the future hoop teams can strive to surpass. Here We Go Falcons, Here We Go . . . Bottom Row: J. Lundy, J. Buoniconti, P. Merman Swim To An 11-3 Record Led by co-captains Reed Ameden and Gary Markhart and coached by veteran Hal Miller and newlywed John Worth- ley, The Minnechaug Merman swept to a dual meet record of 11-3 and a second place finish in the Western Mass. Swim Meet. The Strength of the varsity Swim team lies in Captains Ameden and Markhart, Seniors Don Safford, Mike D ' Amours, Doug McLaughtlin, Rich Gernux and Steve McRae and a very strong group of Juniors. With this nucleus, plus some outstanding underclassmen, the Falcon fishes swept over most of their oppo- nents. Against E.L and Holyoke however, Minnechaug had a tough time. The question was not who was stronger or who had the better swimmers, for all three teams were more or less equal. It is felt that any one of the teams could have beat the other on a given day. The meets with E.L. and Holyoke turned out to be a guessing dual with the two coaches as to just who would be placed in what event. A sick member, a poor performance, an untied bathingsuit โ€” all these things and more could lead to the right or wrong guess, and in the end victory or defeat. BOTTOM ROW: M. Ross, B. The Falcon win coupled with Ludlow ' s 26-12 upset victory over previously undefeated South Hadley gave Minnechaug a half game lead over the Tigers in the Suburban League standings. In other action, Longmeadow blitzed Com- merce, 52-14, to square its record at 4-4, while Holyoke Catholic snapped a four- game losing streak Trade, 2S- 0. Despite a scoreless first quarter Minnechaug ' s Big Green Machine had an ex- cellent opportunity with five minutes gone in the game. On a fourth down play from the Spartan 18, junior QB Gray Pabis nearly connected with end Ned Deane in th e end zone but the play was broken up on a fine defensive play by El ' s Dennier Killoren. With 1.15 gone in the, second period the Falcons broke the scoring ice on Paxis ' three yard run. The conversion, a pass from Joe Twining to Pabis made it 8-0 at the half. The Spartans came back in the third quarter on an electrifying 46 yard run by junior halfback Bill Marazzi. Marrazzi was apparently stopped on the thirty-five by two Falcons defenders but. shook them off and went in for the TD. Whitmeyer Andrea DeValle โ€” Secretary Jeanne Abrahamson โ€” Treasurer The past four years, we, as a class and as in- dividuals, have played an important role in the life at Minnechaug. We, each in our own way, have be- come involved in this life, through sports, dra- matics, organizations, class activities, and the classroom. These years have also been growing years, where we have grown not only as individuals, but also in understanding others. Our thanks goes to all those who have made this possible: the administra- tion, teachers, classmates, and our advisors, Mr. Musselman and Miss Dunn. Now these years are in the past and we look forward to a new and better life. And yes, we ' ve just begun. Paul Dorsey Condon Jr. REQUIEM Will they stop, Will they stand there for a moment, perhaps before some shop where you have gone so many times (Stand with the same blue sky above them and the stones, so often walked, beneath) Will it be a day like this โ€” As though there could be such a day again โ€” And will their own concerns still be about the same, And will the feeling still be this that you have felt so many times, Will they meet and stop and speak, one perplexed and one aloof, Saying: Have you heard, Have you heard, Have you heard about the death? Yes, choosing the words, tragic, yes, a shock, One who had so much of this, they will say, a life so filled with that, Then will one say that the days are growing crisp again, the other that the leaves are tur ning, And will they say good-bye, good-bye, you must look me up some time, good-bye, Then turn and go, each of them thinking, and yet, and yet, Each feeling, if it were I, instead, would that be all, Each wondering, suddenly alone, if that is all in fact - And will that be all? On a day like this, with motors streaming through the fresh parks, the streets alive with casual people, And everywhere, on all of it, the brightness of the sun. โ€” Kenneth Fearing VALLEY CAMPERS INC.
