Although it is a small chorus, Mr. Killam predicts increasing enthusiasm and membership for next year. The Junior Choralyres are learning how to sing in harmony. They are a very talented group of girl ' s, and they will be even more appreciated next year. This year ' s Choralyres are, as always, a select group phosen by Mr. Killam. School Store Provides Valuable Service Every morning in September, the freshman can be found lined up at the school store waiting to buy gym suits, shower shoes, note paper, note books, pens. The crush eases later in the year, but even well-supplied upperclassmen still find time to browse among the new paperbacks during lunch. The girls do a nne job in providing an important service. School store staff has a great time preparing the store for business. S. Smith, N. McCaffrey, K. Christensen, Mrs. Ardison — Advisor, J. Abrahamson Juniors Carry On Tradition — Receive Top Three Awards The Seniors presented a delicate combina- tion of humor and pathos in their production of Marty. This difficult play was handled with great skill by a talented cast headed by Henry Boyer (Runner-up Best Actor) and Denise Mediavilla (Runner-up Best Actress.) ABOVE: Marty (Henry Boyer) asks the Young Girl (Donna Lovell) to dance. RIGHT: The Wall (Diane Ball) creates a chink. BELOW: Dexton Linker (Debbie Colitti) speaks to some rebellious students. Instead of combining with the Sophomores, the Freshmen once again presented their own play. This year it was really their own, an original satire by Mr. Musselman, featuring the unforgettable Dexton Linker. We predict a great future for this talented group. This year the Sophomores proved that A. A. Milne ' s The Ugly Duckling can still delight audiences. All the players handled their parts expertly and Jonna Goulding received special recognition with an honorable mention award. We look forward to their production next year. The Chancellor (Jonna Goulding) reads the riddle to the Prince (Geoff Allison) A Minnechaug tradition is still being maintained. For the fifth year in a row, the Juniors have taken top honors in the one-act play contest — best play (Pyramus and Thisbe), best actress (Diane Ball), and best actor (Alec Gray). Humor ranged from slapstick to wit, and the actors seemed to enjoy themselves as much as did the highly enthusiastic audience. ABOVE: Pyramus (Alec Gray) woos Thisbe (Ethel Killam). RIGHT: Mr. Trenholm presents trophies to Alec Gray, Henry Boyer, Diane Ball, and Denise Mediavilla. Prosper And Be Preposterous Delights Audience Prosper and Be Preposterous, an original play by Jim Congdon, was a satire on A Christmas Carol and featured an off-beat ghost, life-sized wind-up toys, and a miser who learns his lesson in modern style. The fine cast was headed by Henry Boyer as Pennisqueezer Shrewd and Dan Courtney as the Ghost of Christ- mas Presents. ABOVE: Ghost of the Christmas Presents talks to Pennisqueezer Shrewd. On opening night, little attention is paid to one of the most hard working groups in the school. Tech Theater members, headed by Brenda Willcutt, worked all year on such things as building and painting scenery, preparing sets and lighting. The team added much color to their routines when they changed to black sweaters and knee socks, and used green and white shakers for effect. The highlight of the season came at the Alumni Basketball game in December when Santa arrived just in time to take a short ride on his sleigh pulled by Rudolph and his eight reindeer (Drill Team in disguise.) Many thanks to Miss Fey, her new assistant, Mrs. Sager, and the team for entertaining all during half time at football and basketball games. The girls challenged them to another game, but regretfully never had the opportunity to play it. However, they proved themselves at the Hampshire County Girl ' s High School Play Day on Saturday, October 19. The team spent the day at U. When they combined their own determination with the skills developed through long hours of practice, Coach Whalen ' s booters were almot unbeatable. This is supported by their beating first place finisher Chicopee 2-0. As any of the spectators at the Ludlow game can testify, the game sometimes changes quickly. With only five minutes left, Ludlow scored three goals to win 3-2, a loss that hurt deeply, because it shattered our hopes to make the W. Mass. Soccer Tournament. There is always next year, however, and with the return of Bruce Fuller (9 goals) and many other underclassmen, there are strong hopes of making the tournament in the fall of 1969. Under the direction of coaches Donald Bamford and Jack Logan, the harriers posted a 9-4 record with the greatest degree of success coming at the conclusion of the season when they compiled six consecutive victories. Senior co-captains, Bill Carpenter and Doug Flint, along with Dennis Keefe and Jeff Coffin were the men who most often paced the distance runners. A standout performance was turned in by Bill Carpenter at the Western Mass. Cross Country meet where he placed ninth in a tremendously large field. A pleasant surprise was freshman Jim Durfee who earned his varsity letter. Many returning lettermen should provide this outstanding sport at Minnechaug with many good years to come. Varsity Gridsters Produce Thrilling Season Minnechaug exposed a ' New Breed of gridsters this year. The Falcons continued the use of the platoon system, innovated a flea-flicker play into their game plan, and introduced many new faces, including freshman Steve Spinn. The Falcons were piloted by Super Bowl Joe Twining, who left his mark on opposing defensive secondaries. Joe continuously hit ends Kevin Sullivan, Mike Lynch, and Boger O ' Donnell as all three were able to get free and snatch passes with great regularity. The passing of Twining would never have come about were it not for the fine protection of the front wall consisting of Leo Spear, Alden Luzi, Ken Crossman, Jim DeSanti, and Gene Jajuga. LEFT: Bill Deane in a rink long dash, splits the defense and goes in on goal. BELOW: The Falcon bench follows the now of play as they await their shift. ABOVE: Wingers Doug Colby, Tom Kissel and Paul Melhinger take a needed rest. BELOW: Spectator Mike Eastman takes a lesson from Bob Pierpont on how to don goalie equipment. LEFT: Hard Days Night for goalie Bob Hirst. BELOW: Biff Fisher directs the draw to Howie Gilson, as Joey Galavotti lays in wait for an unsuspecting Amherst player. BELOW: Besolute look by right winger Pete Kielbasa. Leader ' s Corps Benefits School Jeff Coffin assists Mr. Morgan with a pool class. This is just one of the many services of the Boy ' s Leaders Corps. Composed of junior and senior boys that have demonstrated leadership in their first two years at Minnechaug, the Leader ' s Corps not only assists physical education classes but also serves as ushers at all home athletic contests. ' . ' , ' .„ STUDENT BODY The past four years have been vastly different for all of us. Many things have happened, both for the good and for the bad. Yet, each of us, in our own particular way, has become involved in life here and it in us. They have been growing years, each of us fulfilling responsibilities accepting and rejecting new ideas, and most important, understanding our classmates and the reasons for their own special involvements. Our sincere thanks to Mr. Managre, our advisor, for all his help and his enthusiastic support of all of our projects. MIKE McMILLAN - Pres. ANN McCAFFREY - Vice Pres. SALLY CAMERON - Sec. MR. Many of us came to know her as someone more than a teacher; we will always remember her as a friend. Mrs. Jean O ' Neil is a giving person, a generous person. She has never hesitated to give of herself to those who need her. When she left Minnechaug in January, the school lost a quality that cannot easily be replaced — true concern. Like the PGA ' s Big Three — Palmer, Player and Nickalus, the Minnechaug Big Three — Tenerowitz, Gibson and McNulty had a rough time with the competition this year. The team lost a number of matches by just one stroke, including one to second place finisher South Hadley, in finishing with a 7-10 record. Team honors went to: senior Stan Tenerowitz with the best average (81), sophomore Mark Gibson with the best score (a two over par 72), and junior Tom McNulty with the most points scored (30, a new school record). Dennis Meehan, Howie Gilson, Bruce Bartley and Gary Markhart were among the other team members who figured decisively in many of the matches during the season. From 6-10 To 15-5, A Job Well Done! ABOVE: Essentials in any sport: concentration and follow- through (as shown by Bob Dexter). RIGHT: Gee, that ball went like it had wings! The 1968 tennis season couldn ' t have been termed a success by many standards; and nobody likes to remem- ber losing. Well, the 1969 squad decided that the best way to bury the past would be to go out and win. That ' s exactly what they did. The 69 ' ers played high caliber, exciting tennis. The competition in the Pioneer Valley Tennis League was tough; the matches were close, but the Minnechaug netmen prevailed for third place and a 15-5 record overall. ' Chaug Tears Up Base Paths. Adjectives describing the performance of the 1969 baseball team can be found in abundance in Roget ' s Thesaurus under goodness. Dandy, swell, rum, keen, bully, crackajack, great, grand, admirable, estimable, etc. pretty well sum up a second place Valley Wheel finish and a 13-6 record overall. Pitching aces Barry (Ray Culp) Mussleman and Jim (Lonborg) DeSanti anchored the mound staff, and the slugging was handled by such notables as Pete (Yaz) Skryniarz, Rich (Reggie Smith) Rene, Barry (Russ Gibson) Morgan and Mike (Dalton Jones) Lynch. George (Mike) McMillan could have given some pointers to his struggling namesake, George Scott. ' s Have Nine Game Winning Streak The J.V. Baseball team had a very successful season this year finishing off with a record of 13-2. The nine game winning streak which the team had shows their strength in all areas which made them one of the most powerful teams in the league. This success, however, came only after much effort and work on the part of t he team and their fearless leader, Mr. Verani. BOTTOM ROW: S. McRae, J. Galavotti, P. Toomev, G. Srrycharz, D. Garden, C. Lopata, Mrs. Gombar — Coach Through the combined efforts of both Mrs. Gombar and the girls, the softball team ended up with a very successful undefeated season. The highlight came when they defeated their rivals, Monson, by a score of 17-3 in the first game (coincidentally, Monson beat Minnechaug by the same score last year). With this and the following winning games the softball team ended the girls ' ' 69 season on a successful note. Really now, could anyone have imag- ined a mediocre track team at Minne- chaug? Of course not! The ' 69 team fared only slightly better than their average brilliance, with a 11-0 dual meet record. Among the worthy opponents that fell before the onslaught of hurdlers, sprinters, vaulters, and muscle men in green and white were: Tantasqua, East Longmeadow and Pittsfield. With the loss of many Se- niors, the underclassmen have a tough challenge to carry on the team tradition of greatness.
