We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility - that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint - and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, good will toward men. - John F. Kennedy From his undelivered speech, Nobember 22, 1963 MR. PETER GARTNER He devoted his days his thoughts his efforts to our success. We dedicate our future our triumphs our hopes to him. The FALCON staff wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Mrs. Carolyn Barstow for the hours and the energy she has devoted to the Yearbook in the past two years. f MR. KENNETH E. JOHNSON, Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. IRVING H. AGARD, Superintendent of Schools Congratulations Class of 1964: We are proud of your record of accomplishments. You have witnessed a steady growth in the school ' s enrollment, with an accompanying increase in activities in which you have shared both pleasures and responsibilities. Continued participation in the duties and healthy diversions of community affairs will enrich your life. May good fortune attend your future plans. MR. LINCOLN A. DEXTER, Principal MR. RICHARD I. TRENHOLM, Vice Principal, Social Studies To the Class of 1964: We have enjoyed observing you grow and mature, both as a Minnechaug class and as individuals, contributing to the improvement of our school and our community. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Vice-President: Scott Richards President: Gary Soverow Secretary: Allyson Miller Treasurer: Linda Stedman The annals of the class of ' 64 are now ready to take their place beside those of the classes of ' 61, ' 62, and ' 63. Each class has added to the traditions and reputations of Minnechaug, not only as a class but as individuals-- ' 64 is no exception. Scholastically, the class can be very proud of its fine record and also of its two Merit Scholarship finalists, Gary Soverow and Jim Anderson. This year ' s senior class has contributed its share of athletes to all the sports at ' Chaug and can boast, as a result, of some of the most outstanding teams in the history of the school. ' 64 initiated the now traditional round school rings and was the first to allow girls on the monitor staff. The seniors also sold refreshments at all the home basketball games and carried on the noble tradi- tion of the Minnechomp. The class of 1964 is to be congratulated on its enviable record at Minnechaug. 22 In the academic area, we proudly applaud ' 64 ' s honor students, merit scholarship winners, As Schools Match Wits representatives, Mathletes, and those who have added to their own academic status but who have not been recognized by special or public com- mendation. You have contributed to the esteem that others have for our educational standards- -you have contributed scholars. In the area of leadership, the class officers, student council representatives, moni- tors, leaders corps, and cheerleaders can be justly proud of the competently run program at Minnechaug. You have contributed leaders. In the area of school spirit, the seniors have contributed much to the determination and willingness to maintain a sports record equal to and in some areas better than those of previous years. You have contributed athletes and love and respect for the green and white . May the future endeavors of the Class of ' 64 be equally blessed that they may surpass the record left here at Minnechaug! ! ! Wet weather and slippery fields provided slides and spills which added much to the spirit of the team and the enjoyment of the spectators. The Harriers raced to a third place finish in league competi- tion, being beaten only by front-runner Tantasqua and second-place Amherst — two teams which also handed Minnechaug its only losses in dual competition. With returning strength from last year ' s team, Coach Bamford con- ditioned a tight nucleus of top runners who often placed within only a few seconds of each other. The team was led by sophomore Larry Plate, being closely followed by Bob Minor, Ted Kaynor, Bill Richmond, Scott Robison, John Danforth, Bill Dougal and Byron Candage. The team raced past their first seven opponents with little trouble and concluded the sea- son with an excellent 9-2 record. SCORES Falcons Opponents 18 . .Southwick . .43 19 . . SOCCER The loss of nearly all its varsity members in the class of ' 63, a relatively short team in stature, and a member of the toughest league in all Western Mass. were all con- tributing factors to the soccer team ' s spotted record. The booters did emerge, however, with an enviable 7-6-1 total and posed a strong threat to all the league teams they played. This year ' s team found they had to rely mainly on team work instead of individual skills and Coach Kober again did a fine job in moulding an exceptional defensive and tight all-around team. 120 SCORES FALCONS OPPONENTS 4 . . . . BASKETBALL Height, hard work, and excellent coaching earned the Minnechaug basketball teams a tie for first place in the Valley Wheel, followed by the Supplementary Small School Division title. Sparking the team to 13 straight victories was a combination of the finest players in the history of the school. Dale Fryer averaged over 20 points a game for half the season and was backed by Bruce Morgan ' s consistent high scoring. Joe Truesdale and Fitz Turner always seemed to come through in the clinchers and Brian Bras- kie ' s excellent offensive and defensive footwork could not have been dispensed with. The team ' s success was far beyond anyone ' s expectations after the completion of the first seven games. But from that point on the coach and his five valiants seemed an invincible foe and all involved deserve a great deal of credit for the finest season a major Minnechaug team has turned out. The 8 wins and 3 losses in duel meet competition, however, have wiped out all skepticism. Coach Miller and freestyler Ed Finsilver pulled the team to the unexpected first place in league competition (sharing the title with Holyoke and Classical) and a third place in the Western Mass. meet. Finsilver broke Pioneer Valley records in the 200 and 400 yard freestyles and his 100 yard fly record remains unchallenged. The team also found standouts in Tom Ensign in the 100 and Alan Kodis in the breast-stroke. The swimmers certainly deserve many congrat- ulations on a very fine season. 127 FIRST ROW, left to right: D. Steuck, B. Fish, H. Armatidge, K. Bliss, R. Covel, P. Fleming, B. Fish, D. Mitchell, W. GYMNASTICS Gymnastics ' growing popularity was shown this year by the number of boys that turned out for the sport. Minnechaug has been noted since its origin for its excellence in gymnastics and this year proved to be no exception. The team rolled up a first place in the Western Mass. meet and individual per- formances throughout the year were out- standing. Ken Bliss was high scorer and the best all around man on the team, collecting honors on still rings, parallel bars, and high bar. Rich Covel and Pat Fleming were other specialists who turned in consistently high scores. The season proved to be dotted with mishaps but with the enthusiasm shown by the many underclassmen team members Coach Alf Ehnstrom has high hopes for next year ' s team. 128 SCORES OPP.
