Text from Pages 1 - 188 of the 1963 volume:

June 13, 1963, is one of the greatest milestones in the town histories of Wilbraham and Hampden. This day marks the graduation of the class of 1963, the first class to complete all four high school years in Minnechaug. There has been much progress since that first day we entered our new school building as freshmen. Some of this progress is far from reaching its final goal; yet some has far exceeded our highest expectations. These four years have been busy years! They have been years of some tears and disappointment — yet more often years of fun and laughter. This book is a record of our fourth year. Through these few pages we have attempted to show the progress we have made, as a class and individually, in the first four years of Minnechaug ' s history. CHARLES B. THOMPSON We came to you in times of our troubles. You lifted us up to face the world realistically. You never faltered, Never turned us away — with questions unanswered, guide instructor yet most important — Friend Mr. Thompson, to you we dedicate our 1963 FALCON. As freshmen, we were confronted not only with a new school building, but also with a new faculty. The newness of everything seemed to draw closer faculty-student relationships. The faculty soon learned, as did the students, that while strict order was maintained (and in some cases not maintained!) in the classroom, enriching experiences could be found through friendships outside of class. When we return as alumni, it will not only be to visit the building we have grown to know so well, but, more important, to visit the faculty-friends we have made through our four years of high school. These are the people who have done so very much for us and to them we give our heartfelt thanks. MR. IRVING H. AGARD, Superintendent of Schools MR. KENNETH E. JOHNSON, Assistant Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1963: We, and the citizens of this community, congratulate you on your excellent record in this high school. Your desire to achieve high standards of excellence has been well supported by your demonstrated willingness to devote the time and effort necessary to realize your goals. To the Class of 1963: You have completed four years of serious work to earn a diploma at Minne- chaug Regional High School. The satisfaction that comes from a job well done should be yours. Remember that our country needs excellence in achievement rather than excuses for time that has been wasted. We extend our best wishes and hope that good fortune will attend your future endeavors. This class has compiled many Minnechaug firsts in its record: the first class to spend four years in these hallowed halls, the Carnival, the Minnechomp, tie votes for class President, and the first football victory. This class may, or may not, be our best to date, but it has character as well as characters. It is traditional at graduation to counsel graduates about the opportunities of the future; however, I ' ll leave that to others, and suggest that the class of ' 63 has earned its niche in Minnechaug history. If you continue to apply the creativity, ambition, and spirit you ' ve shown at Minnechaug, we won ' t worry ! DAVID L. NASS— Senior Class Advisor 20 Carol Brown — Secretary Frank Horacek — President SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Geraldine Steup — Treasurer Michael Noonan — Vice-President And here are WE — Without reflection or inflection. Now that life commences, what shall we do with it? Live it? or Live with it? We have been carried this far — now we must flex our uncalloused feet and learn to walk on our own. But beckon life, — and we, with stumbling steps, will follow. 21 BETSY ANDERSON Knitting Club.l; French Club 2; Mixed Chorus 2, 3; Drill Team 2, 3, 4; Syn- chronized Swimming 1, 2, 3, 4; Swim Team 1. iv ALAN ARSENAULT Mixed Chorus 1; Art Club 2; Chef Club 3; Carving Club 3. Paul Grazio and Co-Captains Dan Kielbania and Stan Kogut led the team to commendable places in the Western Mass (13th place) and Valley Wheel (4th place) Golf Tournaments. BASEBALL The Minnechaug Baseball Team, though it did not turn in quite as good a record as hoped for, is accredited with a performance which makes up for some of the one-point losses. Near the end of the season Minnechaug beat Easthampton, the top team in our league, and thus prevented the ' Hamptonites from entering the tournament. Coach Ullery is looking forward to a more successful season next year despite gradu- ation losses. • Roy Lasky deserves recognition for his fine pitching job, and Ray Cieplik for making the Wheel All-Star Team. TRACK . . « ' The Minnechaug Track Team lived up to everyone ' s expecta- tions this year, and once again proved itself one of the best in the area. Any initial pessimism present quickly disappeared when the team rolled over its first three opponents and cap- tured the Valley Wheel crown. Record shattering performances in nearly all events showed Coach Thompson ' s team to be an excellent all-around one. The boys defeated West Springfield and concluded the season by winning the Western Mass trophy. Special recognition goes to Seniors Dave McGuill, Bob Balser, John Kober, Paul Linford, Bob Fleury and Dick Chapman for outstanding performances. The Minnechomp — a joint effort by the Juniors and die Seniors — was a tremendous success. This class broke Minnechaug ' s three year class rincr tradi- tion and changed the shape of the rings from square to round. They climaxed a successful third year with their Junior Prom. 46 FRONT ROW: M. Bean, S. Boyer, D. Benoit, F. Adamczyk. SEC- OND ROW: L. Bartlett, C. Anderson, M. Baribeau, A. Bianco. THIRD ROW: C. The Sophomore class, Minnechaug ' s largest, is both lively and enthusiastic. Their campaigning, although brief, aroused interest throughout the entire student body, and their elections were extremely close. They sponsored the annual Sophomore Dance and aided the Junior Class by having a booth in the Junior Carnival. The spirit generated by this class has enlivened many activities and teams, and they are a great asset to our school. 52 FRONT ROW: L. Babmeau, C. Barnes, C. Bean, M. Babineau, A. Ballou. In one brief year, the Freshman class has already demonstrated its unity and originality. Throughout this year they have eagerly supported the many school activities, (including the Class of ' 63 ' s impromptu Freshman Day — from which they emerged un- daunted and unified) and have also sponsored their own tradi- tional Hallowe ' en Dance. The Freshman class held elections early in the fall, but not until after a unique and original cam- paign. Although they have much to learn, this Freshman year has indeed prepared them for their future responsibilities and the upholding of Minnechaug ' s traditions. 58 FRONT ROW: R. Ashe, C. Bolek, E. Under the able supervision of Coach Donald Bamford, the Minnechaug Harriers sprinted to a record of six wins and two losses. One highlight of the season was a surprise win over Amherst, who was previously undefeated in seven straight meets. Co-captains for the season were Senior Paul Linford and Junior Ted Kaynor. Sophomore Bill Rich- mond and Freshmen Larry Plate and John Danforth turned in excellent performances throughout the season. 118 SCORES FALCONS OPPONENTS 25 Amherst 30 37 Amherst 21 18 Holyoke 39 22 Somers , ...41 20 Somers 45 36- Tantasqua - -21 21 Williamsburg 36 20 Williamsburg 37 Wachusett Invitational — 6th State Meet— 1 6th (Note: In cross country the lowest score wins) 119 FRONT ROW: B. FOOTBALL 122 The football team promised that things would be different this year, and went on to fulfill their gridiron prophecy in the last game of the 1962 season. After playing excellent football against Tantasqua and Ludlow, the Falcons hit full stride and crushed Commerce 22-0, thereby winning the first game in Minnechaug ' s gridiron history. Another highlight of the season was the selection of Dick Chap- man to the Suburban League All-Star team. BASKETBALL This year ' s Basketball Team has fulfilled everyone ' s expectations and is a strong contend- er for the Valley Wheel crown. The eleven man squad, under the tutelage of Coach Peter Gart- ner, contains eight members of last year ' s var- sity, thus giving the team indispensable experi- ence. Although the Falcon Cagers have no one top scorer, the steady shooting of Co-captains Dave McGuill and Dick Chapman, coupled with the consistent point production of Trey Bonham, Fitz Turner, Bruce Morgan, and Dale Fryer, gave the Falcons a hard to stop offensive at- tack. The team ' s five-pronged offense and stingy defense, helped them roll to contention in their first year of league play. Season highlights were the victories over teams which Minnechaug had never before beaten in basketball. East Long- meadow, a perennial nemesis, bowed in two straight independent tilts, and the Falcons top- pled strongmen Longmeadow in two league games and one independent battle. 124 SCORES FALCONS OPPONENTS 56 Enfield ...54 64 Ware -48 4? .... E. J. Finsilver is the Pioneer Valley champion in the 100 yd. butterfly, and is a strong favorite for state laurels in this event. Outstanding showings were made by Buzz Twomey, Skip Goodwin, Pete Smith, Steve Schopbach, and Jim Anderson. The team displayed top-notch performances throughout the winter season, losing one-point squeakers to Chicopee and Holyoke, the defending state champions. 127 FIRST ROW: Coach Ehnstrom; B. Nims; K. The team, under the coach- ing of Alf Ehnstrom, avenged an earlier setback by defeating the University of Massachusetts Freshmen in the Minnechaug gym. The Falcons are led this season by Co-captains Ray Cieplik and Pete Grosso, and Seniors Dave Burt, Bob Balser, and John Kober.
