We have not only large transport airlines but also privately owned planes used for business and pleasure. The boys in the Aviation Department are learning about the structure and engines of the planes. After finishing their course they arc eligible to take the Civil Aeronautics Administration Examination, if they wish to become a licensed mechanic. Barbering Like our Cosmetologists our Barbers are required to take a State Board Examination. In order to be eligible for this examination they must have 1200 hours of training to their credit. From early morning till late in the afternoon our boys turn out hundreds of patrons. For that well groomed appearance just step into the Vocational barber shop. Westley Bradford. Architectural Drafting Training in the drafting field usually insures students of employment as junior draftsmen. Architectural Drafting pertains to buildings of various kinds. This field calls for a sense of art and design, neatness, and patience. Auto Body Auto body is a part of the automobile department in which the students learn how to repair automobile bodies. The department is housed at Central High School. Their actual production work is the repairing of fenders and general body work. Painting automobiles under modern methods is also a part of their training. In this picture we find Clarence Dhein, Ray Beach, Mr. Rhemhart and fim Peterson. Row I: Ray Beach. Jim Peterson. These students learn to design their own clothing and cut their own patterns. They also learn to press and repair their clothing. Machine Drafting The machine draftsman of today is a very important person in our modern day industry. The boys in the Machine Drafting Department learn the principles of how to design machines and must have an advanced knowledge of mathematics, lettering, tracing, and blueprinting. Radio You probably donât realize the imjxirtancc of science in your everyday life, for instance, the radio âyears ago they were known as crystal sets, capable of receiving only one or two stations. With the radio of today we can listen to numerous stations all well organized which produce well rounded, educational programs. Some of the major factors taught in the Radio Department arc specialized electricity, theory, repairs, and radio wiring. Working on radios are Roger Sarantch, Arthur Dahl, den Kregnest. It has been ranked with the other leading schools who offer this subject. Our students are taught the skill of handling a brush, pen and various paints as well as the technique of lettering and design. One of the projects the art department had undertaken this spring was the decorating of the lunch room at the senior banquet. It was beautifully done in red and white; the traditional colors of Valentines Day. The art department also handles the decorating of our store and display windows. We realize we have come a long way since the time of our grandmothers. The girls in our sewing department simply whip out a pattern, cut and sew the garment on a machine in a matter of a few hours, instead of working, maybe days by hand. Retail Training A gleaming smile and a courteous welcome is the goal our retail training boys and girls arc striving to meet so as to be able to please the public. Years ago, general stores were in existence and seemed to meet the need of the people. Now, Vocational trains its boys and girls for special sales work in large department stores, by teaching them the art of pleasing the customer. The game tied 13-13, which brought great joy to both sides. This year our queen reigns from the retail training department and our king from architectural drafting. In the picture at the top right the queen is being escorted around the football field by the cheerleaders, while waving at the cheering crowd. At the bottom the master of ceremonies. Dick Pittclkow is announcing the crowning of the king and queen, which had just taken place beforehand. Surrounding the king and queen are the football players and cheerleaders. Everyone was tense, the halls ran with excitement, for the Homecoming was finally here. To us the most excited people were the king, queen and their attendants. They lost those games with a fighting spirit. Our only win came when playing Central at the opening of the season. The game ended with the Volts winning with a score of 14 to 12. They played their homecoming with West and the game ended in a tie, 13 to 13. It was a fitting victory for both schools as they were both celebrating their homecomings. The Vocational fans saw a lot of gridiron playing with Sam Iaquinto and Jerry Lewis. Bill Urbanski showed excellent playing at the beginning of the season but then he sprained his ankle and wasnât very valuable playing football but was good at place kicking. With the return of most of the lettermen and Roger Vos as captain the outlook for the next season is some very good gridiron playing. C853 City Champs The Volts started the season off with a bang by winning over Central 55-49, Southwest 34-27, West 67-40 and Edison 55-47. Marshall then overtook the Volts by a score of 30-42. But this did not stop them, for they went on to win the last five games. The Washburn Millers, who twice dropped the Volts by one point last year attempted to gum up the works again but our boys put the shoe on the other foot for they took Washburn with a score of 48-36. With this win over Washburn the Volts captured the City Championship undisputed for the first time in Vocationalâs history. They then went on to win over St. Paul Washington for the Twin City Championship by a score of 50-38. The cagers were not satisfied with this however, for they went on to win the District 17 Championship, the final game being with Central ended with a score of 56-50. They won their first game of the Region Five tournament from Buffalo, but lost to Robbinsdale in the final game. This knocked the Volts out of a chance to play in the State Tournament. Bob Petersen, the Voltâs center, was the scoring demon of the year. Bob broke all previous city high school records by scoring 264 points, giving him an average of 26.4 points per game.
