Due to the fact that education began in Minneapolis at such an early date and the schoolhouses were moved from one place to another many times, there is very little accurate information available about the earliest schools. The first school building in Minneapolis was a small log cabin, with a dirt iiioor, located east of where the Jackman Elevator now stands. It was a one-room grade school. The next schoolhouse we have any information on is the one which was just north of where the telephone office is now situated. This Sch-ool was a crude lumber, one-room grade building. The desks and seats were made of cotton wood slabs built against the walls. Later more room was needed to accommodate those who wished to go to school. A small, one-roomed frame building, called the little school- house, was built West of the Methodist church for the first and second grades. The rest of the grades attended school in a building where the telephone office now stands. This building consisted of four rooms, two on the first floor and two on the second. The high school students at this time attended classes in the second story of the Pacific House, which stood at the end of Mill street just north of the tracks. In 1884 the citizens of Minneapolis decided to build this prospering city a permanent school building, and erected Central. The approximate cost was S15,000. It, a two-story structure, was constructed of red brick and still stands. On the first fioor there are four classrooms and a large hall. On the second floor there are four classrooms, a large hall, an office, and three small rooms. This building was not modernized until 1914. The first eight grades attended school here. For a while the high school classes attended school here, and then they were transferred to the city hall. 14 rw Q -,x msfsmwmmsa: M xv mm,44..Q.sJ .mv w ww v,m1..m,w w,1,vw.w.w ww J M mme-wwe umm ,anusmunnmmummwwmwwmmmwwmwwvmwwwf www-www. 7 my-ww-.w,x HISTORY OF BUILDINGS CContinuedD In 1904, what is now the Junior High Building was erected. It was built at that time for a .Senior High School. The Lott Brothers contracted this building for S20,000. The architect was C. W. Squires. This is a large red brick building facing the south. On the first H-oor there are iive large classrooms and a hallway. On the second floor there are two rooms used for the teaching of music, one for instrumental lessons and the other for vocal lessons. There its also an auditorium with a seating capacity of 375. The cornerstone to this building was laid by Hattie Barber fSeniorJ on Friday, May 13, 1904, at 4 p. m. In 1916 the present High School was built. The contractors were Powers and Kernsg the architect was Owens, and the cost of the building was 328,785.60 This building was made of red brick and faces the east and south. On the first floor there is a Manual Training room. Across the hall from this is a finishing and store room. Across the hall occupying nearly half of the l-ower floor is a gymnasium. The door is sunk 12 feet below the level of the hall. Also on this Hoor is the girls' locker room. On the second door there are five classrooms, the offices and the jour- nalism laboratory. On the third floor are three classrooms, a science laboratory, a G. R. room and a study hall and library. The new grade school building built during '38 and '39 was contracted by the Johnson Brothers for S117,250. The architect is Charles Shaver, and the architect inspector is O. D. Lott. This building was constructed of light bricks and faces the west. The north end of the building is occupied by the auditorium and gymnasium combined. It has a seating capacity of 1310. The south division consists of ten classrooms, a long hallway and the oEices. This building is to be heated by two steam boilers. This school has all the modern equipment of today, including air conditioning. The classes will attend there for the first time next fall. .Q2J,ic.1.,!: , as iw warm- Ai-1ffmw,s,.wJ5 Aaxzma ., may-rsvfwmmwwfew-Km www-v.M M - ' -fm + W A A M X 1.-::4...f,M' .V-,IAM N. ,A A -,-. .--.-,1 .--:LW --,, .J,Qwfv,,J.,,ffQ,fym-Nffyx.w.wm-M-alumna:me HIE En IEE. lihnlne C. S., '39, have started many things they have been unable to stop in the course of twelve years of schooling. The seniors who started out together in the first grade with Miss Nellie Johnson as their teacher were Bill Cox, Darlene Bohen, Jim Bradley, June Bussart, Charles Carlson, Phyllis Markley, Elmer Muller, Treva Perry, Jean Scott, Ruth Shoemaker, Mary Stout, Bob Whitney, and Dick Whitney. These students have climbed on up the ladder, losing some of their old classmates. and friends and gaining new ones, until at the present time there are 45 Seniors in the class of '3-9. W'hen the present Seniors had advanced by studying diligently to the third grade, Charles Carlson became a member of the high school band. Charles was the only member of Central School. who was in this band and is the youngest member ever to have been in the Minneapolis High School Band. As time struggled along, the Seniors reached the sixth grade. While in the sixth grade these children reached the height of mischievousness, and it became apparent that chastisement must be administered. A group of the more mischievous students were escorted to the office and would have been thoroughly tanned if Darlene Bohen had not broken down and with heartrending sobs pleaded for mercy fand what can even at teacher do when Darlene turns on the heat ?J. That year the class of '39 started the publication of that newsy newspaper known as the Central School Gazetteg this paper is one of the distant relatives of the Police Gazette. This publication has been continued each year by the sixth grade class. Another year-a different school. When the Seniors reached the seventh grade, they received their first taste of high school life. It was in the seventh grade that they first went from room to room for different classes. Another thing of vital importance was that the boys became aware that those of the opposite sex were sent here to make life brighter, and consequently they set out to illuminate the world. Two years later they entered high school as possibly the greenest, most awkward, and most uninfiuential group of Freshmen ever to enter Min- neapolis High, but look at the improvement! When they became Juniors, they attended that great event, the Junior- Senior banquet. They prepared this banquet, which carried out the theme of Dreamy Hawaii. This banquet was the first to be followed by a Junior-Senior Prom. This year they have gained the top. They sponsored the first Homecom- ing Day and invited all alumni members to attend the football game. They also sponsored a Senior Carnival to help finance the Senior trip. 'Dhe trip will be the first extended tour to be taken by a graduating class from M. H. S. The Seniors have published this year the first year book since 1925. Parigorically speaking, and from a synthetic point of view, the fact we have tried to convey is that the present Seniors have just commenced to do things in a big way. FRESHMEN-One bright morning in September, 1936, a starry-eyed group of 64 youngsters decided they would like to go on the stage. Of course, when they attended the Freshman Mixer given by the upper classes, they did not realize that they could not be actors and actresses at first, although the leading actors were Dean Baker, presidentg Robert Nelson, vice- presidentg and Floyd Santner, secretary. In the spring of the year this group of stage hands attended a class picnic given at the State Lake. SOPHOMORES-The next year we advanced to property man- agers, the chief of which were Robert Brown, presidentg Marion Mitchell, vice-presidentg and Florence Ewart, secre- tary. To show our potential ability we entertained the student body during an assembly program with a burlesque hillbilly school. Our social life consisted of a class party which every- one enjoyed. JUNIORS-This year we advanced to under-studies, in which capacity we served the school in the operetta, The Love Pirates of Hawaii. Two distinctive members, Bob Nelson and John Anderson, achieved leading roles in this production. To further proclaim our increasing ability we favored the assem- bly with another chapel program which featured various c1as.s members. Following this we gave the Seniors a banquet, the theme of which was Modern Music. We feel sure that every- one who attended had a delightful time. SENIORS-Soon we will be the leading characters. We do not know our future, but we hope to make this year our best and to reach that shining goal-graduation. Mm a,v.2':,.,,m,w MJ x 'L 42 Muni W-wwf -Q 1 me qs im: -. 3 Q23 , m M Jr: '1-zgifkq 'P' . We were the new Freshmen, and there were ninety-six of us. At the first business meeting the following officers were elected: President, Marian Oberg Vice-President, Audrey Merryfieldg Secretary and Treasurer, David Gooch, Sponsors, Miss Carol Schowalter, Miss Mary Grove, and Mr. Elton Gard. Also, we elected Albert Watkins and Lavon Peters as Student Council representatives. After Albert left school, Ted Strain was elected in his place. We had our class party on March 4 in the High School gym- nasium. The color scheme was green in honor of St. Patrick. Another interesting eve.nt of the year was the Major Bowes Almateur Hour Chapel which was presented by our Freshman class on February 18. In the spring there was a tie between Lavon Peters and La- Donna Clanton for the Freshman scholarship pin. In athletics the Freshman basketball team took second place in the Minneapolis Invitation Tournament. Due to the exper- ience of the upper classman, the Freshman class of 1937-'38 did well in producing four winning track men. They were Glen Lash, Gerald Gard, Carmen Wilcox, and Bill Krone. SOPHOMORE YEAR: The enrollment of the present Sophomore class numbers eighty-one. Class oiicers were elected thi.s year as follows: President, Helen Gansg Vice-President, Ted Straing Secretary and Treasurer, Jean Ewart. Faculty sponsors for the year are Miss Evelyn Long and Mr. William Siegle. We are represen- ted in the Student Council by three members-Dorothy Wing, Raymond Adee, and David Gooch. The main event of the year was the Senior Carnival. We elec- ted Ethel Tasker for our Sophomore queen. It was a close race, and when all votes were counted, Ethel received second place. Our class was well represented on the football team. The fol- lowing boys won letters: Raymond Adee, Carmen Wilcox, Glen Lash, Lawrence King, Sidney Jagger, William Ferguson, and Kenneth Baker. F THE STAFF The honor of publishig the first M. H. S. Year Book in 14 years has fallen to the journalism class of '39. Consequently, the greatest, effort has been put forth to obtain the most interest- ing facts' 1.n the history of Minneapolis High School, from the very beginning of the school, up to the present time. If a stranger had visited the journalism class during the days of the preparation of this record book, he would have seen groups of students working together and overheard bits of talk and argument relating to aluxmni, as to when they were graduated from M. H. S., where they live, and what occupation they are now following. Some of these overheard remarks concerned former athletic teams, music clubs, school boards, and other school organizations. All of this has been of great interest and has helped to mingle enjoyment with the work required to assemble it. This class sincerely hopes that their efforts will furnish enjoy- ment for all who chance to glance through the leaves of the '39 Annual, Days of Youth. C-:- i0'80e90 STUDENT CGUNCTL Student representation? Minneapolis High School has it! Last year a student governing body was organized. This governing body, the Student Council, was composed of ten members, two Freshmen, two Sophomores, three Juniors, and three Seniors. A change has been made, however, in the membership of the Council since last year. The number of members has decreased from ten to nine, there being three Sophomores, three Juniors, and three Seniors. The Student Council i.s the law-making and Student represen- tative body of the High School. This is the body which de- cides what special chapels shall be held. It considers budgets and plans of all kinds. It makes rules for parties, picnics, assemblies, and other school activities. The Student Council has proved, in the two years it has functioned, to be a success. It is recognized as having one of the best bands, orchestras, and glee clubs in the state. The past conductors who have won honor in the hearts of the Mlnneapolis people for their splendid contributions to the music department are Mr. E. Thayer Gaston, now teaching in the Garden City Junior Collegeg and Mr. G. Lewis Doll of Kansas City, Kansas, where he is teaching at Wyandotte High School. Mr. O. P. Weigel is the present instructor of instru- mental music. The past vocal instructors in the high school music depart- ment for the last years have been Miss Bertha Gish, now in- structor at Pittsburg Junior College, and Miss Carol Scho- walter, the present vocal instructor. The Minneapolis schools have had many prominent music students. There have been a few who have done outstanding work in school and after graduation. A few of these are as follows: June Gage, class of 1930, Edith Avery and Mildred Kirkby, class of 19313 Margaret Hawkins, class of 19333 Rich- ard Gage, Harlan Lenander, Mildred George, and Katherine Hart, class of 1935g William Srna, class of 19363 Betty Brewer and Audrey Faye Biesterfeld, class of 1938. The present senior class gives honors to Lila Lee Zimmerman and Phyllis Markley as being the most outstanding music students of 1939. THE MUSIC CALENDAR OF 19.38-'39 The Minneapolis High School music department was very fortunate to give three broadcasts from station KSAL. The first broadcast was given October 9 at the KSAL studios. The groups participating in the broadcast were the Concert Club, Triple Trio, Double Mixed Quartet, String Trio, and Clarinet Quartet. The next musical broadcast was held October 30. This was a larger broad- cast, since it was held in the high school auditorium. Persons were allowed to attend the broadcast held in the auditorium. February 26, the last broadcast was held. All broadcasts were enjoyed and proved very interesting and educational for those participating. Each year the Minneapolis High School sends delegates to Emporia State Teachers College to the Annual Clinic and Conference of Supervisors and Teachers of Music. Students from all over the state participate in the band and vocal choruses. Those representing the band this year were Phyllis Markley, Bute and piccolog Darlene Bohen and L01'1'aiI'16 Brewer, clarinet, Clyde Feather, cornetg Robert Brown, bass tromboneg Marian Mitchell, alto clarinet, Wilma Long, string bassg and Mary Gans, French horn. The following girls were selected for the Clinic Honor chorus: Lila Lee Zimmerman, June Bussart, Belva Boyington, Dorothy Wing, Alma 1 tl 577f?7sN ' Y Y M V fY ?MQ5? Robert Nelson, Frank Gooch, and Allan -Cromley represented the boys' chorus. W'illiam Revelli of the University of Michigan was director of the band, and Hywell C. Rowland, head of the Music Department at the University of North Dakota, directed the Honor Chorus. The students were at Emporia December 2, 3, and 4. The High School Operetta, Love Pirates of Hawaii, was given March 16 and 17. This was a light opera with exciting comedy sprinkled with romance. ' The leads were Lila Lee Zimmerman, Robert Nelson, Frank Gooch, and Ruby Avery. The lovely Hawaiian girls of a Ladies' Seminary proved an interesting contrast to the bold pirates who became so harmless when their chief fell. in love, unexpectedly, with a prim old maid of the Seminary. Miss Carol Schowalter and O. P. Weigel were in charge of the direction and presentation of the operetta. The Concordia Contest was held March 31 and April 1. A very good rating was given to every group or soloist which entered the Contest. There was no rating below Excellent given to those representing Min- neapolis. DRAMATICS MAKE-UP The Dramatics Class, under the sponsorship of Miss Gertrude Stoelzing, has had a very eventful year. October 25 and 26, three one-act plays were given. The best was picked to represent the school in the county contest. The best pLay was Fixin's. The cast included Lila Lee Zimnierman, Jim. Bradley, and John Bishop. Other plays were Pigs and Trying Them Out. The cast for Pi-gs was made up of Treva Perry, Jim Bradley, Paul Bronson, and Frank Gooch. Trying 'Dhem Out cast included Clyde Feather, Frank Gooch, Ruby Avery, Mary Stout, Darlene Bohen, and Vera Woodruif. The best actress was Lila Lee Zimmerman for her character in Fixin's. Frank Gooch was chosen best actor for his character part in Pigs. October 16, the county contest was held. Darlene Bohen received the medal for the best high school declamation and Mary Jeanne Austin tied for first in the grade school declamation division. The Dramatics department has helped with many chapels and programs. They presented a one-act Negro minstrel for the Senior Carnival. Jim Bradley and Frank Gooch were selected to write a history for a radio broadcast honoring Minneapolis school . They also took part in several pep assemfbl-ies during the year. The Ohnistmas chapel program was given by the dramatics class. ' The Last project of the class is the presentation of a three-act mystery comedy entitled, The Night Owl. These cups go back in the history of our SC11001, the oldes-t bearing the date of 1911. This cusp was won for citizenship. The activity which has contributed the largest number of awards to this valuable collection of trophies is that .popular field sport, track. Track has added twenty-five cups, three plaques, and three pennants to this ,group of awards. More trophies have been won in this field due bo the fact that an award of some sort is given for each individual event. Basketball and music, the nearest rivals of track, are tied for second, each having contributed fifteen awards to the collection. The music groups have annexed five cups, six plaques, and four certificates, while basketball has added a total of thirteen cups and two plaques. This is an unusually large number of awards for this phase of athletics, because the only awards which can be won are the cups for placement in the league and those awarded to the regional tournament winners. Following basketball and music is the literary group. This group consists of nine cups, two of which were Won for debate. Running a close fourth to the literary group is the commercial depart- ment with four cups and four plaques. All of the commercial awards have been won by the typing classes. Scholarship and football have contributed the least number of awards, each having added only one cup to the collection. There are two other cups of great significance, the P. EQ. O. cup and the Hickerson trophy. The P. E. O. cup is presented to the senior girl who has been rated highest by the High School faculty for her w-ork during her High School course as shown by her: Q11 Scholarship, f2J Character, C35 Value to school, Q41 Co-operation with the faculty, and Q51 Interest in extra-curricular activities. The Hickerson trophy is awarded to any boy who has won an athletic letter and who has been selected by the faculty as ranking the highest in the following six points: Q11 Scholar- ship, Q23 Co'-operation with faculty, Q35 Character, C45 Value to school, 151 Interest in extra-curricular activities, and Q61 Compliance with K. S. A. A. rules, and training rules of the coach. The Junior High trophy case is also filling rapidly. At the present time it contains twenty-five awards which were won in the junior divisions of the same activities as those of the high' school. KANSAS LEAGUE Withdrawing from the Solomon Valley League, the Minneapolis High School entered higher scholastic and athletic competition when they were voted into the North Central Kansas High School League last December. This league, already composed of Concordia, Beloit, Belleville, and Marysville, voted in two new members, Lincoln High School being in- cluded with Minneapolis in becoming a member of the league. This league is more than an athletic league. In addition to football and basketball, the member schools' will also compete in track, tennis, golf, music, and speech activities. This setup will become effective with the 1939 football season. Each school in this league is required to play four league football games and a double round-robin in basketball. By being in this league, Minneapolis High School is in the kind of com- petition in which the school belongs. An increase of the number of stu- dents in school, a rising in the status of athletics, and a high music standing were all factors which helped Minneapolis become a member of this league. 1 - ---'- :--vw o...,. 4. 1' QQ:-'llfj' T BASKETBALL With a tougher schedule than in previous years, Minneapolis struggled through the 1938-'39s basketball season with four wins and nine losses. The M. H. S. squad, under the reins of H, A, Lonborg, the new roach, started practice about two weeks before the football season closed. Journeying to Glasco for the season opener, the Lions lost both the first and the second team games to the Bulldogs. Showing a decided im- provement, the Lions split the honons with the Concordia squad by win- ning the second team game and losing the iirstl team game by a close score. Next in the Lions' path was Bennington. Never seriously pressed by the Bulldogs, Minneapolis marked up an impressive 40-15 victory over the Bennington team. After playing the first three games of the seasonpin hostile territory, the Lions returned home to meet the strong Clay Center team. The seconds won a sensational see-saw struggle by a score of 21-20, while the first team lost their game by a small margin. Minneapolis couldn't play the next two games on schedule because the Whole school was quarantined due to the smallpox epidemic. Taking the road again, the Lions journeyed to Miltonvale and returned with two victories. The next week saw the Lions overcome a first quarter lead and emerge from the Glasco-Minneapolis contest with two more close wins. This game climaxed the high school athletic career of Dick Gary. Dick was sadly missed during the rest of the season, as he had been the spark plug of the Lions' offense and had piled up a. total of 99 points in those iirst five games of the season. Next week found the Lions tasting defeat at the hands of the rangy Lincoln Leopards. Winning their fourth victory of the season, Minne- apolis easily trounced the Bennington Bulldogs the following Week. Remaining in a slump, the Lions lost the last five games of the season to Lincoln, Sacred Heart, Solomon, and Miltonvale consecutively. This brought the season to a close except for the Regional Tournament which was held at Salina. Minneapolis had to face a strong Herington team in the preliminary brackets and was defeated by a score of 41-14. THE 1938-'39 SCHEDULE AND RESULTS Lions Opts. Lions Opts. SCHEFFER Time was when the old brick school house in Minneapolis was new, and, in the form of a Greek cross, bravely faced the quarters of the wind. And sometilmes there was wind enough for all the angles at the same time until the cottonwoods and the elms on the grounds grew big enough to sift some of the cold spots out of the breeze. It may have been about '84 that bricks were laid upon bricks to rear the structure of which we were all so proud. Anyhow, it was in the middle of the halcyon Eighties that the first class in the newly organized high school foregathered mornings for three years, to complete a course of learning that envisaged a diploma tied with a pink ribbon. Or was it a blue ribbon? The writer can remember only that, on the night of commencement in the new courthouse, he lost all interest in color.s when a poorly aimed bunch of geraniums hit him in the eye. If it had come after our own peroration, we might have understood. But it was meant as a tribute of love and affection for one of the sweet girl graduates. There were but two of these prairie iiowers in our class-Nellie Davis, who is now Mrs. Harry Cawley of the home town, and Linah Swanzey, who is now Linah Swanzey. Don't ask me why. A career, I have under- stood, and she made the grade beautifully, in the rarified air of Pueblo, Colorado. The three boys of the class had formed a triumvirate, in the fashion of Roman precedent, for Latin had just been intro- duced into the school, and we were intrigued with the romance of things. In this triurrnvirate Rolla Clark, now Dr. R. M. Clark, was the Pontiff who held the fasces, still in good repute in Roman lands. James Pearsal, as Augur, was supposed to divide the sky into quarters and determine, by the iiight of crows or jay birds, whether the class should cram for examin- ation, or not. James left us early in life, taken from his prom- ev' ,Maman Lmsw ,mmm w.f.m-wwm-vwnauuai CLASS OF EIGHTY-EIGHT CContinuedD ising career with lumber interests in Texas. The writer was the Censor of the triucmvirate, whose duty it was to look after the conduct of the class members. But as there wasn't much conduct in those days, he had an easy job. And that was the Class, the first class, in the day of small beginnings. Our first guide and monitor was Prof. A. P. War- ington, who, after about a year and a half of supreme jurisdic- tion, heard the call of his political party to the office of County Superintendent. He answered it 3 that is, he went. After that, Prof. C. W. Mills came to supervise the schools. A tall, bearded gentleman he was, with a kindly leaning to his students, and a fund of reminiscences frofm his Civil War experience in Ander- sonville prison. And then there was the lady of the blue eyes and the bright smile-our high school principal. She read the Bible to us in the morning exercises or sometimes Mark Twain's Innocents Abroad, when Psalms or Beatitudes gave out. She was Miss Emma Camp, but she also heard a call-to change her name. It came in the last weeks of our course when Spring was on the land and dandelions starred the best kept lawns in town. And We could foresee our finish shortly -and hersg so we were reconciled to quit school together. And that was our faculty, if you please, in the days when we studied in Minneapolis High School. Three years were not enough, as some of us learned later, to fully' prepare for college. And we had to get further preparatory training in the declin- ing prep course at the University. There were difficulties, of course, and hardships of our training days that do not beset the boys and girls who now flock into the newer High School, near the old. There were no options in the course, and no trend toward practical subjects that would fit us for getting a living, with less emphasis, perhaps, on getting life. We still contend for a generous mixture of cultural subjects in any high school curriculum. is w9filLW' II .,.!:?oZ'f itil !'h5l.X5f3l?,JCgfSQweI 3L'DQ..i..Q,m ,L ,AES l.L???QY'?5-Rf WJ--5-fx HMM! J DR CARVER Looking through the records of attendance in the Minneapolis School system, we see the name of George Washington Carver, who has become world famous as a scientist and educator. The following has been extracted from a pamphlet sent to us upon re- quest from Tuskegee Institute where Dr. Carver has been located for many years. Dr, Carver, the distinguished Negro scientist of Tuskegee Institute, is perhaps as great a genius in his field as Edison and Burbank and .Steinmetz are in theirs, and he is certainly the greatest genius the Negro race has yet produced. He has derived literally hundreds of products from such things as peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans, cotton stalks, fibrous grasses and weeds, waste material of various kinds, and from the common clay that underlies the soil of practically every Southern State. The products his Wizardry has extracted from the peanut alone, number more than 200, ranging from oils and pharmaceutical prepara- tions to rubber, paper and ink. The products of the sweet potato number nearly as many, ranging from Hour and starch to dyes and stock foods. He has derived some 60 products from the pecan. He has made synthetic products from many kinds of Waste material, among them marble, building boards, wood, wood veneers, fibres, paper and numerous other articles. ' Dr, Carver estimates that the products in his laboratory, when arranged for exhibition purposes, would fill three freight cars. As you visit his exhibit of wonders derived from the peanut, first he shows you bottles of milk and cream. Here is sweet milk, on which the cream rises just as it does on real milk. Here is pure cream. And here is buttermilk on which the whey rises just as is does on real buttermilk. All made from peanuts. Each has the exact appearance of the genuine article, and the milk is said by those who have tasted it to be better than cows' milk. Also here are butter and cheese. Other products from peanuts are ice cream mixture, cocoa, chocolate bars and caramels. Among the many other products Dr. Carver has derived from the peanut are: synthetic rubber, 17 kinds of wood stains, dyes for clothes, axle grease, lard, lin- oleum, iiiour, breakfast foods, stock foods, soap and face powder-all labeled with ink from this same lowly product of the southern soil. Dr. Carver has derived many of these same materials from the sweet potato. Also he has made a synthetic marble, from Waste materials, which is as useful as marble quarried from the ground. This Synthetic kingdom is new and will grow still larger and more important as science proceeds with its study of the possibilities of plant chemistry. Hundreds, possibly thousands of new products will be added to the synthetic king- dom as a result of plant chemistry. Meanwhile, Dr. George W. Carver, of Alabama, stands forth as a prophet of science. lb. wa gi,-1. 412' f -,..w-.2 1.14 ai is r... l'46.w.,::,-r-1f.,1w 'ff 459-ry, i- .- .
