CLASS HISTORY Dear Uncle Sam: As old cousins retire, you will be picking replacements from your new nieces and nephews as they grow up to meet the future. You will be needing replacements in all walks of life. Our main qualification is our patriotic heart and eagerness of youth. Here is a brief sketch of our 12 years of formal education. We entered school at Minier Grade in the fall of 1943. Mabel Leach taught our class of 17. The 8 original class members who are graduating with us are Ronnie Cruse, Bob Freitag, Deane Haning, Bill lrnig, Betty Kurth, Pat Malinowski, Bill Mueller, and Jerry Myers. The first year Miss Wilimine Peine led us in a rhythm band. Clifford Bennett was principal until we were 8th graders when Mr. St. John became principal. That first year we all had the measels and took part in the operetta and the PTA Christmas pro- gram. At Christmas Bill I., dressed in the traditional costume, represented the New Year in our skit of holidays, Bill M. and Ronnie C. represented the 4th of July, Deane H., dressed in a soldier's suit, represented Flag Day. Mrs. Leach taught the 2nd grade and Beth Wharrie, music. We wrote numbers from 100-1000, again had the rhythm band and an operetta, BLUE BELT. Our first two years in school were war years. We brought money to buy stamps, collected paper, tin cans, and milk weed fluff. Loretta Springer taught our 3rd grade and Miss Wharrie, music. At Christmas Miss Springer be- came Mrs. Leatherman. In May she joined her husband in Puerto Rico and Tressa Diegel was our teacher. In the 4th grade Miss Diegel continued as our teacher. 'Bunney' Bunell taught music. We took part in the operetta, TOM SAWYER, Some of the country schools closed and their students came to town to make 20 of us. New members still with us are Lois Diegel, Donna Gemberling, Dorthy Gordon, and Pat Schmidgall. Bill M. played basketball. The band was started. During our years in school only one of us has not played a band instrument. During 1947-48 we were in the 5th grade. Our teachers were Louise Pratt, room teacher, Don Mathis, band, Alta Speers, vocal, and Mr. Bennett, coach. Consolidation was made final, we got buses and hot lunches, and, of our present members--Harriet Gordon, Gene Nafziger, and Dick Schmidgall. Fern King and Ethel Smith were cooks, Henry Malsh and Melvin Nafziger were bus drivers, and Gus Struck custodian. Those who went out for basketball were Ronnie Cremeens, Ronnie Cruse, Bob F., Jerry Graff, Deane H., Bill I.. Jerry M., and Fred Tromp, The band members played in the combined high and grade band. The Patrol group was started. In the 8th grade Bill M., was captain and Ronnie C. and Deane H.1ieutenants. Paul Hohnstreiter, our sponsor, took us to the Golden Gloves bouts in Peoria and Bradley baseball games. We presented the operetta SNOWFLAKE. Lilly Bryan, our room teacher, taught English, Mrs. Pratt, arithmetic, and Mr. Bennett, social studies and coached when we were 6th graders. We had our own room. Mr. Mathis taught band until the spring when he was assisted by Harry Rosenbloom. Miss Peine, now Mrs. Krueger, taught voice. We performedaMINSTREL and CAMP MEETIN . The lightweights were county champs. We took part in baseball, track, and the County Music Festival. Our '7th grade room teacher was Mrs. Pratt, the rest were the same except Mr. Rosenbloom was band in- structor. Mrs. Krueger left in the spring and Crystal Brown came. The County Light- weight Tourney, which we won by beating Delavan in an overtime, was in Minier. We had the operetta, THE '49ER. In our 8th grade, teachers were Mr. Bennett, Mr. St. John, Principal, Mr. Rosenbloom, and Mrs. Carol Rosenbloom. We sold candy at ball games and had S30 left after buying gifts for our teachers and graduation flowers. With this balance we bought a picture. Bill Mueller was class president. Duringgrade school our substitute teachers were Leta Haning, Marcella Mueller, and Marge Tanner. Our graduation exercises were May 14, 1951, at 8:00 P. M. Of the twenty-one members in our class, Ronnie Cremeens, Gerry Graff, Brian Hoover, Joan Necessary, Fred Tromp, Joyce Tucker, and Barbara Walley have since moved away or dropped out. Our colors were blue and white, our motto FORWARD, and our flower, the white rose. So ended grade school. 13

In the fall of 1951 when we entered High School we had gained Barbara Drinnon and Jim Pawson. Our teachers were Lester Miller, principal, Paloma Dillon, sponsor, Edwin Saunders, Hazel Shade, J. Hammer, Eunice Eckhoff, Gerald Wagoner, and Patricia Fox. We were thoroughly initiated in high heels, hoop skirts, and large brimmed hats for the boys, and overcoats and boots for the girls. On October 19th we held a rec- reation party in the gym. Officers were Dick Schmidgall, president, Bill Imig, vice president, Barbara Drin- non,secretary, Bill Mueller, treasurer, and Pat Malinowski, and Ronnie Cremeens, Student Council. As sopho- mores, Ralph Morgan was our sponsor. Other teachers were Mr. Miller, Mr. Saunders, Mr. Hammer, Mrs. Dillon,Miss Wilma Rosebraugh,Mrs. Grace Pittman, the James F1avin's, and when Mrs. Dillon left, Mrs. Faye Tackett. We had a skating party, a recreation party, and a square dance. Our officers were Barb Drinnon, president, Bill Mueller, vice president, Bill Imig, secretary, Pat Schmidgall, treasurer, Dick Schmidgall, parliamentarian, and Pat Malinowski and Bill Mueller, Student Council. As juniors, Miss Rosebraugh was our sponsor,Mr. Rothel Buzzard replaced Mr. Morgan, Carolyn Denman replaced Mrs. Pittman, and William Van- deveer replaced the Flavins. The junior play was ONE MAD NIGHT presented November 6th--the best junior play ever produced at MCHS. In November we ordered class rings. April 30th was the date of the Jr.- Sr. Prom and Banquet whose theme was the Mardi Gras. The banquet was held in the Koffee Kup Kafe. Paul Wireman furnished the music for the prom in our gym. In May we held a class party. Our officers were Barb Drinnon, president, Bob Freitag, vice president, Pat Malinowski, secretary, Pat Schmidgall, treasurer, and Betty Kurth and Bill Mueller, Student Council. August 30th, we seniors showed up for our final year all together. Mr. Clark Esarey, who filled the vacancy of Mr. Buzzard,was the one faculty change. John Graber has been custodian. September lst we elected Bill Mueller, president, Pat Schmidgall, vice president, Deane I-laning, secretary,Pat Malinowski,treasurer, and Betty Kurth and Dick Schmidgall, Student Council. Mr. J. Hammer was our sponsor. September 10th we initiated the freshmen. October lst was the day for senior pictures which were taken at Rembrandts' in Peoria. We finished the day by shopping, eating dinner at the Bishop Cafeteria, and attending either a movie or a football game. We plan the following activities: Senior Play, April 29th, a trip to Chicago, May 1 -15, Baccalaureate, May 22nd, and Commencement, May 25th. The achievements and scholastic records tell only part of our success story. Our class and its members have produced outstanding accomplishments in athletics, journalism, dramatics, and government, as well as individual success in activities in and out of school. Although at times we griped and complained, we leave MCHS with reverence as we remember the happy days there. And so with a slight glance backward we look to the future for new accomplishments. We hope that our sojourn in the schools of Minier, Illinois will en- able us to serve you better. Yours respectfully, The Senior Class of '55 14
