Qrfrezgu Srfchange Student LIISA KAARIN MARJATTA KONTTINEN Liisa was born in a little village where her folks moved because of the war. She has three brothers -Heikki, 215 juaani, 20, and Paavo, 9. Her father is a sergeant in the Finnish army. The town, Lappoonranta, in which Liisa lives, is about 20 miles from the Russian border in southern Finland. It was founded more than 300 years ago and is known for its fortification walls from the 18th century, its boat traffic, and as a bathing resort. It is situated on the largest of Finland's 60,000 lakes. A Finnish person learns to ski almost the same time he learns to walk. Many other sports are enjoyed by Finnish people. Every year at school sports and gymnastics are required. Finnish students either walk or ride bikes to school as there aren't any schoolbusses. Cars are not common-place as they are here. NOTE FROM LIISA This year has been more wonderful than any of my past years, and I am sure the coming years, too. I have really had fun and learned many new and exciting things about America. I am so grateful to every single one of you, my teachers who helped me and made the school a great experience, my schoolmates-from fresh- men to seniors-who all regarded me as a friend and not as a stranger, both of my wonderful fam- ilies who took me to their homes as a daughter and a sister, and all the people who contributed to this wonderful year of my life. I do hope I can come back some day to see all of you, and I would be sincerely glad if any of you could come to see me and my country. LIISA KONTTINEN
