Frightened and bewildered, we began to associate with our fellow classmates and teachers. Since then, we have come from far and near to join together in learning. As we ascend these last steps, we have many memories of our past four years at Minico. Isn't it strange that all those exasper- ating problems finally solved themselves in the end? How could we forget our assemblies, games, dances, and all the millions of other occasions that made up our wonderland? Now the curtain is falling on the first act of our life-produc- tion, and we must go our separate ways. But as we go, we do not go alone, for we will always carry the memories of our wonderful years at Minico with us. The club's main project was to provide for an exchange student from some foreign country. The annual Sweetheart Ball, in which the girls ask the boys, was held in February and proved to be a big success. Climaxing the year's activities for the Minico-Eds was the Mother-Daughter Tea held in the spring. II9 Wandering through the halls or at any game, you can always spot Minico's athletes by their red sweaters and gold stripes. These boys make up Minico's Club. To earn enough money for a movie camera was the project of the Club this year. They sponsored an aftergame dance and also operated the snack bar at home games. To climax the year, a Father-Son banquet was held in honor of the athletes' fathers. Richard Plumlee, PRESIDENT Gay Howard, SECRETARY Howard Schaeffer, VICE-PRESIDENT' Y A-i f EH ? Qrfrezgu Srfchange Student LIISA KAARIN MARJATTA KONTTINEN Liisa was born in a little village where her folks moved because of the war. She has three brothers -Heikki, 215 juaani, 20, and Paavo, 9. Her father is a sergeant in the Finnish army. The town, Lappoonranta, in which Liisa lives, is about 20 miles from the Russian border in southern Finland. It was founded more than 300 years ago and is known for its fortification walls from the 18th century, its boat traffic, and as a bathing resort. It is situated on the largest of Finland's 60,000 lakes. A Finnish person learns to ski almost the same time he learns to walk. Many other sports are enjoyed by Finnish people. Every year at school sports and gymnastics are required. Finnish students either walk or ride bikes to school as there aren't any schoolbusses. Cars are not common-place as they are here. NOTE FROM LIISA This year has been more wonderful than any of my past years, and I am sure the coming years, too. I have really had fun and learned many new and exciting things about America. I am so grateful to every single one of you, my teachers who helped me and made the school a great experience, my schoolmates-from fresh- men to seniors-who all regarded me as a friend and not as a stranger, both of my wonderful fam- ilies who took me to their homes as a daughter and a sister, and all the people who contributed to this wonderful year of my life. I do hope I can come back some day to see all of you, and I would be sincerely glad if any of you could come to see me and my country. The SPARTA STAFF has worked long, hard hours to bring you this annual. We hope that you will find it satisfactory. I should like to thank everyone who helped bring our work to successful completion. To Mr. Lee, our advisor, I give special thanks. He has helped us in every possible way, and we appreciate it very much. We are extremely grateful to the faculty for the cooperation and patience they have shown during picture scheduling and necessary last-minute class interruptions, for without their assistance editing a yearbook would be next to impossible. Mr. Ingersoll, orchids to you for all you have done to make our job an easier task. I sincerely appreciate your understanding and helpful suggestions for our many problems during the year. As you looked through this 1960 SPARTA, you could not help notice the outstanding artwork. To Ianeal Aldridge, the mastermind behind every piece of artwork in this annual, goes special thanks. janeal also deserves recognition for the cover. I give special thanks to: Kaye johnson, my Business Manager, because she not only handled all our busi- ness affairs but because she also helped write and type all the copy. Maryellen Walton, my Assistant Editor, for her work in editing the activities section. Karen Roemer, my Section Editor, for her work in editing the business section. Pat Patterson, my Typist, for her work in typing and editing the Index. Bill Rawson and Steven Broadhead, our school photographers, for their work in tak- ing and printing pictures. Our special thanks goes to our publishers, the Taylor Publishing Company, and to Artcraft Studio, who took the pictures for the class and organization section, and to Francisco Portraits, who took the pictures for the favorites section. Last of all, hats off to you, the student body of Minico! Because you are really the one who made it possible to have a 1960 SPARTA. We hope that you will enjoy it now and in the years to follow, and that it will bring you pleasant memories of your high school days at Minico.
