SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE To the Class of I969: Today, when many taken-for-granted values are being seriously questioned, young people, as perhaps never before, are being asked to mint for themselves the coins of conduct and conviction. You have reached an age and a development at which this task is upon you. It is my earnest wish that your coinage will be sound, that it will include kindness and integrity, and that it will be used to bring you a life of achievement and fulfillment-two of the chief components of happiness. With Joe Butensky making consistently long runs to set up touchdowns, the Miners could not be stopped. By their industriousness, enthusiasm, and constant encouragement, Senior Captain Randy Fish, Richard Rada, and Ronald Miller gave the theam that intangible element-leadership. Underclassmen such as Co-captain Joseph Balsis, Stephen Sitkus, Joseph Lipsett, Benjamin Hoenich, Thomas Schofstal, and Jack Bernetskie showed a true winner's attitude by their desire to work hard, learn a new system, and compete aggressively against all opponents. All these factors brought the boys together as one unit-a team characterized by pride. They were proud of the school they represented, proud of the kind of basketball they played, and proud of themselves. On their first league exhibition game of the season, the Battlin' Miners proved promising with an 84-76 win over Williams Valley. Joe Balsis led the scoring with 32 points followed by Tom Schofstal with 18 points and Steve Sitkus with 16 points. Next, journeying to Hamburg, the Miners were overpowered by the Hawks 84-46. Top scorers were Steve Sitkus, 13 pointsg and Joe Lipsett, 10 points. Opposing Williams Valley again, Steve Sitkus led the Miners to a 62-60 victory by scoring the winning field goal in the wan- ing seconds of the game. Balsis was high with 20 points. The Battlin' Miners kicked off the new North Schuylkill League season with a convincing 96-62 victory over Mt. It requires long hours of practice and preparation, as well as an occasional fast from all food when weight must be lost in order to make a certain weight class. The squad has done these things will- ingly and, in the opinion of Coaches Dalton and Donahue, has shown the correct attitude and the will to win necessary for a good team. All con- cerned feel that the squad has been a credit to them- selves and to the school. Oscar Davila of Saltillo, Mex- ico, joined the senior class in September and in the short year he spent with us made many friends. The exchange student project was sponsored by the Miners- ville Rotary Club, and while attending M. A. H. S., Oscar lived with the family of Rotary President Joseph Walacavage. Oscar had already graduated from secon- dary and vocational school in Mexico so that his year at M. A. H. S. was spent in learning to know us by living and working with us. We found Oscar gracious and interesting, bright and knowledgeable, and poised and friendly. We liked his smile and his sense of hu- mor. He adapted quickly to our high school life and his face became as familiar in the halls as that of any area student. We hope he returns to Saltillo with as many pleasant memories as he has left with us. We are grateful to Rotary for the opportunity of knowing him and having him with us this term. Mr. Brady welcomes Oscar to M. A, H. S. A few difeCfi0H5 are Ewen- gf,-ferr-Aft ,.., I And some homeroom help. 4 E 7 Oscar plans to become a chemical engineer and will en- ter Chemistry Science School in Coahuila University, Sal- tillo, Mexico. At Minersville Area he studied American Lit- erature, which he found some- what difficultg P. O. D. which he especially enjoyed during the fall electionsg and chem- istry and math which he had already covered in his courses in Mexico. He attended our meetings and games, learned our songs and cheers, and took our tests and examina- tions with us. ln addition to his adding a considerable number of English words to his vocabulary, we learned quite a few Spanish words from him. Our contact with him has been both pleasant and rewarding. We hope he can look back upon his year at Minersville Area High with equal satisfaction. Oscar with friends Peter Laychock and David Dinich Mr. Brady, Oscar, and Rotary President and Mrs. Joseph Walacavage. Q ' W? SENIOR CLASS SONG Words by Olwyn Beatty and Coleen Calderone Tune: Theme from Valley of the Dolls As we stand here, looking back Over the last four years, Our hearts are filled with sadness, And our eyes filled with tears. Each year proved to he a challenge, There was much we had to do. As a class, we worked together, And we saw each problem through. It only seems that it was yesterday When we first started to Spend days with you. Still Weill recall MHS most of all And we will reminisce School days we miss. We will find a new tomorrow, Echoing our yesterdays, Bright horizons beckon to us, We must go our separate ways. 1969 CLASS STATISTICS Members: 161 Boys: 72 Girls: 89 Branch: 29 Cass: 34 Foster: 5 Minersville: 80 Reilly : 12 Norwegian: I Courses: Academic: 48 Business Ed.: 15 General : 60 Vo-Tech: 38 Class Motto: We enter to learn: we leave to serve. After several months of planning and three days of hard work, the gym was transformed into an under- water wonderland. King Neptune greeted everyone at the doorsg waves of blue crepe paper covered the ceiling with paper fish uswimmingf' beneath. A sunken ship with a treasure chest overflowing with jewels made up the centerpiece which stood on silvered coral. Fish net- ting and star fish added a nautical effect to the decora- tions. To enter the 'gkingdomf' couples passed through a canopyg while on either side of the dance floor, tables bearing brandy snifters containing live gold fish were found. A mermaid ensconced on silver rocks covered with maiden hair occupied one corner of the room, while the band held sway in the opposite corner. Rotating colored lights added a romantic effect. As the music began to play, it seemed almost unbelievable that this long-dreamed-of night had finally come. That night of nights-our Prom-was here! We entered '4Our King- dom of the Sea. Even these photographs of the festiv- ities cannot convey the excitement of this very special event for which we had waited so long and worked so hard. iff NV? Z K V x...,,f W, , , M- f... .I ..
