Ed. 63.949 5011.9 RETRO PECT We would like this page to serve as a final review of our activities over a four year period. As freshmen, John Buffington was president of the class and JoAnn Pasco our secretary-treasurer. The acting talent of some of our members was shown in the Memorial Day program, while athletically, Robert Kopich and Richard Sukeena qualified to play varsity football. Freshmen rep- resentatives in the majorettes were Annette Quinn and Judy Laudeman, while Diane Quandel and Connie Miles became freshmen cheerleaders. Our sophomore year began with the election of the following class officers: president, Robert Kopich, vice-president, Ronald Klinger, secretary, Richard Sukeena, and treasurer, Jack Murphy, Jack Charles, Diane Quandel, and Neil Gilbert attended District Chorus at Palmerton, John Leininger participated in District Band at Shillington. We sponsored our first dance to make money, and, at the close of the term, we made a class trip to Hershey Park. As juniors, we elected to class offices the following students: president, James Jones, vice-president, JoAnn Pasco, secretary, Jack Murphy, treasurer, Ted Malewicz. Boys who earned their letter in sports as juniors were James Salve, Jack Murphy, and Ted Malewicz. Shirley Weissmiller became the school's first Football Queen. Jack Charles and Neil Gilbert were again selected for District Chorus, and John Leininger went to both District and State Band. The Prom helped to make the junior year a most memorable one. The theme was An Evening in Romeng a replica of an old Italian fountain spouting colored water served as the center piece. At the end of the school term the following juniors were elected to membership in the National Honor Society: Basil Cherkis, John Chesonis, Paul Cremo, James Jones, John Kozura, Bernard Stoppi, Mary Ann Balitas, Joyce Hudock, Rita Kasputis, Constance Miles, Diane Quandel, Annette Quinn, Joan Pasco, Carol Troutman. Our senior year was filled with many exciting events. Our class elections resulted in James Jones again being elected as president, with Basil Cherkis as vice-president, Jack Murphy as secretary, and John Schutz as treasurer, Robert Kopich set a modern scoring record in schoolboy football and was picked for the Big SSH team. Other football lettermen were Ted Malewicz, Richard Sukeena, James Kuchinsky, James Michalski, Jack Murphy, James Salve, William Ches- cavage, Bernard Stoppi, Ronald Klinger, Robert Strokelitus, and William and John Buffington. Neil Gilbert and Jack Charles were again picked for District Chorus and were invited to attend National Chorus. Seniors who participated in basketball were John Ferenchick, James Jones, Jack Murphy, Robert Kopich, James Thomas, Robert Thompson, Richard Sukeena, and James Salve. The sen- ior class sponsored dances after the home football games and also held a White Christmas Dancev. Name cards and class pictures caused the usual excitement, and our class rings, for the first time, had a colored stone behind the school crest. The Card Party raised the usual competitive spirit and the spring of 1960 was spent looking toward the completion of the year book and our final exercises, climaxed by commencement. These are the memories of our high school career which stand out in retrospectn. Senior Class Song Words by Jack Charles Tune: You'll Never Walk Alone To our dear M, H. S. we bid sad adieu, Yet part of our heart stays with you, Through our lives Weill recall, Our dear friends one and all, And fond mem-ries will stay with us too. And though our paths sever, Weill always remember The hopes and dreams we knew. Dear White and Blue, Weill always love you And as we part we pray That Cod will bless you. Losing only to Mahanoy Area, the Miners were tabbed my most sportscasters and writers as the best team in the conference. Mr. Gurski stayed mainly with the T formation. Loaded with such re- turnees as Ted Malewicz, Bill Chescavage, lim Salve, Ray Kurowski, Ron Klinger, Bob Strokelitus, and Bernard Stoppi on the lineg and Bob Kopich, lack Murphy, Bill Buffington, and Pat Direnzo in the backfield, the Miners had little trouble in learning to function smoothly as a unit and in displaying a well balanced team. Several members of the team came up with All-State recognition, Bob Kopich was named to the Big 33, with Ted Malewicz and Dick Sukeena gaining hon- orable mention. Malewicz was also mentioned on U, P's All-State team. All- county honors also were awarded to several boys. Picked on both the coaches' and fans, all-county first team were Ted Malewicz, Jim Salve, and Bob Kopich. On the fans, all-county list, Dick Sukeena was also mentioned on first team. Ad- ditional honors came to Bob Kopich, who was named the outstanding back in the county on both ballots. Asst. Coach Head Coach john Gurski Asst. After four hard, grueling weeks of pre-SCRSOII workouts, Minersville was ready to meet its first big challenge. The high-flying Cass Township Condors invaded the Miners stronghold to play, what may have been, the last game of this great rivalry, The Miners got off to a great start, early in the game, on a 29 yard touch- down pass from lack Murphy to Bib Kopich. Cass could not move on its next series of plays, and punted to the Miners 35 yard line. Kopich hauled in the pigskin and, behind some beautiful blocking, raced 65 yards to paydirt. Kopich went on to score 3 more T. Dfs to equal a mark in the school record. Included in these touchdowns were runs of 57 and 21 yards. Dick Sukeena also scored a touchdown and kicked 4 extra points. Also included in the scoring column was a two point safety credited to Ted Malewicz. The final score read 42-13, and the Miners were off to a great season. SCHUYLKILL HAVEN The following week found the Miners under Coach Iohn Gurski journey- ing to Sch. Haven to meet the charges of Coach Harry Hummel. The Miners dis- played too much power for the Hurricanes and walked off the field with a con- vincing 31-14 victory. lack Murphy, aided by two beautiful blocks by jim Salve and Bill Ches- cavage, started the ball rolling by racing 15 yards on a bootleg play. The Miners marched 77 yards for their next T. D. with Bob Kopich going over from the 11 yard line. Kopich also scored the third touchdown of the evening by bulling his way seven yards into the end zone. Dick Sukeena, who had two T. D.'s called back, scored from the 3 yard line. Before the half ended, Bill Buffington took a pitchout and raced 20 yards to paydirt. The score at the end of the half was 31-0 and Coach Gurski had the varsity eleven sit out the rest of the game. While the shocktroops were in, Haven scored twice and the final score read 31-14. Ted Malewicz Dick Sukeena Bob Kopich john Buffington SHENANDOAH Minersville continued to play flawless ball the following week, as they clipped the Shenandoah Blue Devils by a 15-0 margin, The score is by no means an indication of the brand of ball the Battlin, Miners played. They pushed the Blue Devils all over the field, only to have fumbles near the goal line ruin their drives. Shenandoah was really up for this game, however, and gave the Miners a rougher time than any opponent thus far. X-. Ted Malewicz drew first blood for the Miners by blocking a punt in the end zone for a two point safety. Later Bob Kopich crashed off tackle and after Sukeenais placement the score read 9-0 at half time. Bill Buffington ran wild in the second half, and although he did not score, he was the sparkplug of the team. He ran all the way to the one yard line, from which point Sukeena bulled his way for the final score. The extra point was missed, but the Miners rolled to their third straight victory of the year. MAHANOY CITY With injuries riding high, Minersville played host to a powerful Mahanoy Area team. This game is still a nightmare to the players and fans of Minersville, as the Miners ended on the short side of a 14-7 score. Despite heavy injuries to key players, the Battlin' Miners started out like a ball of fire. The very first time the Miners got the ball, they marched straight for a touchdown. Bill Buffington took a pitchout from Jack Murphy and raced 39 yards to paydirt, and it looked as if the Miners were on their way to another victory. Both teams failed to score in the remainder of the first half, and Miners- ville held a 7-0 lead at halftime. sxyyg Bob Strokelitus Ron Klinger Bill Buffington Tom Burns 74LZD In the second half, the Miners were confined strictly to a defensive game, as fumbles continuously ruined their bid to score. Early in the fourth quarter, Mahanoy Area recovered a fumble on the two-yard line and marched in to score. With only 32 seconds remaining in the tied ball game, and after two brilliant goal line stands by the Miners, the Golden Bears recovered another fumble on the Minersville eleven yard line, and proceeded to score before time elapsed. Thus the hopes of Minersville's winning the Southern Division crown were blasted. BLUE MOUNTAIN Bebounding from their only loss of the season Minersville really poured it onv at the expense of a weak Blue Mountain team. Bob Kopich started the ball rolling on the very first play from scrimmage, as he raced 65 yards on a quarterback roll out, Ron Klinger scored next, when he snatched a Blue Mt. aerial and scampered 25 yards to paydirt. Kopich scored again on a 35 yard jaunt to put the Miners out in front by a 20-0 score at the end of 3 minutes to play. In the second period, jack Murphy hit Bill Chescavage with a 24 yard touchdown pass. Bob Connelly, a very promising sophomore, closed out the scoring for the Miners by racing 65 yards for the final T. D. Blue Mountain came through with two touchdowns in the second half which made the final score 33-13. KULPMONT Minersville rolled to their fifth victory of the year as they outclassed Kulpmont by a 36-6 score. Bob Kopich started the fireworks on the very first play from scrimmage on a beautiful 61 yard run. Dick Sukeena added the point to make the score 7-0. Kulpmont could not move and punted to the Minersville 38 yard line. Dick Sukeena powered off tackle, broke into the clear, and dashed 62 yards for the score. He also added the P.A.T. Kopich scored his sec- ond T.D. of the evening by bulling over from the seven. Sukeena added his third straight extra point, and the Miners were out in front by a 21-0 score. Ed Baczka scored the next touchdown by racing over from eight yards out. Sukeena put his magic toe to the ball and booted it clearly through the uprights, making the score 30-0 at halftime, On the opening kickoff of the second half, Ko- pich brought the fans to their feet, as he scampered 80 yards for his third touchdown of the evening. This con- cluded the scoring for the rest of the night. At halftime of the game, Joyce Troutman, a fresh- man, was crowned M. H. S. Football Queen. Members of Queen joyce's court included Barbara Trasatt and Rita Kasputis, seniors, Kay Tarantino and Pat Mendini, juniors, Iane Ulmer and Shirley Chescavage, sophomores, and Kay Hahn, freshman. WEST HAZLETON The following week the Miners traveled to West Hazleton to play what was predicted to be one of the toughest games of the campaign. However, the Miners turned in their most splendid performance of the year, as they downed the highly rated Wildcats to the tune of 44-7. Dick Sukeena was the first to score for the Miners, as he plunged from the one yard line early in the first quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, Bob Kopich dashed 75 yards for the second T.D. of the even- ing. The Miners were just invincible, as Jack Murphy hit Bill Chescavage for a 34 yard scoring maneuver. After 75Lfa Varsity Linemen Kopich added the bonus point, the Miners were comfortably in front by a 19-O score. Before the half ended, Kopich again broke loose, on a dazzling 41 yard end sweep, for his second touchdown of the evening. Dick Sukeena scored his second T.D. of the night by rambling 35 yards to paydirt, early in the fourth quarter. Ed Raczka also broke into the scoring column, along with Pat Direnzo, to finish the Miners scoring at 44. This game, unquestionably, proved that the Miners were a great team. , SAINT CLAIR Senior Manager Minersville continued to play bril- liant football, as they downed a strong Saint Clair team by a 27-7 score. It was a hard fought game, but the Minersv line proved to be too much for the spirited Saints. Dick Sukeena was the first to reach paydirt, as he barreled 65 yards early in the first quarter, and added the extra point, to put the Miners out in front 7-0. The Miners could not move on the next series of plays, and took to the air. jack Murphy faked beautifully into the line and tossed a perfect strike to Bill Chescavage. The fake was exe- cuted so beautifully that not a player jim jones was around Chescavage as he sped into Chescavage as he sped into the end zone. Murphy again took the air and hit Bob Kopich with a 15 yard scoring pass. Kopich also, scored the final T.D. of the evening by bulling his way into the end zone from the one yard line. The Miners, hard charging line did a great job on defense, and deserves a lot of the credit for the victory. Some of the standouts were: Ted Malewicz, Bill Chescavage, john Mileshosky, jim Salve, Bay Kurowski, jim Kuchinsky, Bob Strokelitus, Ron Klinger, and Bernard Stoppi. ASHLAND The following week, the Miners traveled to Ashland to meet the charges of Coach Koperhaver. The Black Diamonds were no match for the power- packed Miners, as they lost by a formidable 39-6 score. The Miners wasted no time in showing Ashland why they were the top offensive team in the region. In the first period, Hay Kurowski tackled an Ashland ball carrier in the end zone for a safety. Before the first quarter ended, the Miners struck paydirt again, with Bob Kopich lugging the ball 21 yards for the score. On the very first play in the second quarter, Dick Sukeena raced 44 yards for his first score of the night, making the score 14-0. A 44 yard pass play from lack Murphy to Bob Kopich set up the third touchdown, putting the ball on the one yard line. Murphy rammed over for the final yard and put the Miners out in front 20-0. Before the half ended, Minersville went on to score one more time. Kopich ran the final 17 yards for his second T, D. of the even- ing, and his 19 of the season. Pat Direnzo added the extra point and at half- time the score read 27-0. Bill Buffington started the scoring in the second half by dashing 30 yards for the Miners fifth touchdown. Ed Raczka concluded the scoring by racing 69 yards in the third period. Putting everything together, the final figures read 39-6. Varsity Backs GX? 7gLfa I. V. Squad . COALDALE Minersville closed a very successful season by trouncing Coaldale 61-19. Bob Kopich started the scoring parade by dashing 11 yards for his twen- tieth T. D. of the season. He also added the next touchdown on an electrifying 65 yard punt return. There was no stopping him as he scored again from twelve yards out. Bill Chescavage intercepted a pass and lateraled to Ray Kurowski, who raced 28 yards for the score. Kopich scored his fourth T. D. of the evening and twenty-third of the year to set a new seasonal scoring record for the county. Jack Murphy hit Ed Raczka with a perfect touchdown pass for the sixth score. Pat Direnzo scampered 38 yards for the seventh T. D. just before the half ended. In the second half, jack Buffington climaxed a 50 yard drive by plunging over from the one. Then came the biggest surprise of the evening, Iim Salve, our big husky tackle, pulled out of the line and took a handoff from jack Murphy. and bulled his way12 yards for the score. jim Homa scored the last touch- down of the year by racing 64 yards for the score. Thus ended one of the greatest football seasons in the school's history. The 1959 team was one of the finest teams ever put on a field.
