Bosack Uanuary 12, 1937 - October 27, 1952, We devote this page el the Eleusinia to the memory of our classmate, Frances, who died in her sophomore year. Frances was born in Minersville and attended St. Stanislaus Parochial School. She later went to Branch Town- ship High and thereafter to Minersville High. We remember her as a girl who enjoyed both work and play. She was a commercial student who particularly liked typingg her outside interests included high school sports, dancing, and her church. Her sudden death both shocked and saddened her friends and class- mates. ' ' l GXJ4 l L 5Q.fa lDlElDllCATllON Edgar Lewis fN0vember 5, 1882 - June 6, l954l On june 6th, 1954, Edgar Lewis, one of Minersville's most colorful public figures died, and a forty-five year career of fearless public service was ended. Mr. Lewis had served his community as police officer, Chief of Police, and Chief Burgess during five consecutive terms. He had been active in many phases of community life, and his name was synonymous with law and order. His un- flagging interest in his town manifested itself in many ways: in his enthusiasm for community athletics, in his constant attention to traffic problems for which he received for Minersville a coveted Safety Award, in his concern for the school children of Minersville whom he served as attendance officer for thirty-five years. Because of his dauntless courage, his record of life-long service, and his unselfish devotion to his community, we proudly dedicate this volume of the ELEUSINIA to the memory of Mr. Edgar Lewis. 1 1 ..,.... --:-Y 4 1 -, -H'-1-- --'U'-Y-- X' 'i' 'Mr-f .. . f-11 'f 7 ' ' 'T ' 'rg ?5f7'g A g T i ' -'- 1 Y A h 4 I 'H'?1v ' 4 Ma' '1 'Lf '5' b '- 'L '4l5 5-r'-r's'f- ' fl5'f,i,fii,'.,,., 141 N , ggmmgmabllmmh awm, www Humm el L ,H .-.F 1 .f - I Q . VVork for the affair was done by senior student committees under the direction of the class advisers. Four hundred and thirty-three guests were served by the refreshment comrnitteeg candy donated by the home rooms was sold by a committee of senior girls, while Bingo was played in the Study Hall and handled by the boys. A valuable array of door prizes given by the merchants of town was on display and was chancecl off at the end of the evening. A Guess Cake, donated by Betty Harvilla, was Won by a local woman, while pictures of the affair were taken by joe Bonk for the yearbook. Reed Maurer, class presi- dent, acted as master of ceremonies. All told, it was a well attended and very successful senior activity. For the sixth consecutive year, Room 7 won the Senior Cup. MUSICAL NOTES The students of Minersville High have a right to be proud of their band for under the capable direction of Mr. Anthony Tremi- tiere the band plays a higher grade of music than ever before. This music goes beyond the high school grade and is classified as the standard grade of musicn. The District Band, scheduled for the latter part of March, was held at Shenan- doah. Irvin Jacobson was selected on first French horn, first chair, John Ford was sel- ected on tuba. One of these boys will rep- resent Minersville at all State Band. Our orchestra has also undergone some streamlining. This year Mr. Tremitiere start- ed a class of seven violins at the Fourth Street Building. This means that in several years the orchestra will boast ten to twelve i violinists. The orchestra tunes up for such important occasions as the Annual Play, Bac- calaureate, and Commencement exercises. The District Orchestra was held in January at Hegins. Irvin Jacobson played French horn, first chair. The All State Orchestra was held on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th of February. Irvin Jacobson represented Minersville. The following seniors will be leaving the band and orchestra: Reed Maurer, Ernest Pizzico, Robert Peyakovich, Donna Clark, and Sonya Kozura. Many students are members of our two choruses: the Girls' Glee Club and the Mixed Glee Club. A boys' quartet has also been organized this year. These active groups frequently sing for our school assemblies. On December 19th, the combined choruses of M. H. S., under the direct- ion of Miss Mary Helen Glant, presented the Christmas Vespers Service. The public was invited. Among other Christmas members, the Mixed Chorus sang the well known Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah by Handel. The aud- ience participated in the singing of Christmas carols. The District Chorus was held at Parkland on February 17th, 18th, and l9th. Those participating were Reed Maurer, Louis Dorazio, Eugene Walacav- age, Kenneth Lord, John Ford, Ronald Schneider, Dora Rizzardi, Leocadia So- ponis, Doris Freiler, Carol Bluis, Patricia Ingalzo. There is one state choral event which is known as the All State Chorus. This chorus comprises the ntopi' people from nine different district choruses over the state of Pennsylvania. Each district has a quota which is obtained from the number of schools participating in the district choral event. Each school, ex- cepting the host school, is permitted only one entrant. Minersville High School was chosen to be the host school this year. On March 17th, 18th, and 19th, two hundred boys and girls from all over the state arrived for this big event after having been carefully chosen to corn- prise a balanced chorus. These vocalists sang folk songs, anthems, art songs, and fun songs in Mixed Voice arrangement. There were also several three and four part girls' numbers and some whole numbers. GXJW TT All Coach Harold Stefl's second season read an 8 won, 2 lost count. The Battlin, Miners Flying Saucer ran into rough sailing in only two games, running the saucer mentoris two year total to 16 wins and only 5 setbacks. The under- classmen showed much promise for the future when they encountered the sen- iors in a benefit game. Of course, the seniors won, but it was a very hard fought game. Here is a rundown of this seasonis heartbreaks and successes as written in the record book by the 1954 version of M. H. S. gridders. The Flying Saucers journeyed to neighborly Cass Township for the season's opener where the Blue and White poured it on over the Droskinis coached Con- dors in the first half to defeat them soundly 27-6. Cass never seemed to get started, while the Battlin, Miners shoveled on the coal. Taking only seven plays to tally the first score, the Stefl coached aggregation led by johnny Skibiel and Ron Russell just couldn't be stopped. Leading by 20-O a few minutes before halftime, the Miners were on defense as Cass attempted to pass for a score. Ron Russell swiped one and took off, going 55 yards for his second score of the night. The understudies played out the second half making two goal line stands and limiting the Condors to 6 points. Five thousand fans packed Minersville's Stadium the evening a crew of aptly dubbed Colden Hurricanes from Schuylkill Haven blew in. By the time Coach Bill Staufferis crew decided to leave they took both the game and the hopes of Minersvilleis Eastern Conference Championship by an overwhelming 35-0 score. From the start, it was all Hurricane. The Blue and Whiteis only attempt to tally was stymied in the shadow of the goal posts by a 15 yard penalty. The Havenites, led by Hafer, johnson, and Drey rolled up a 2:2-0 half time score. Stalled in the third period, the Stauffer men tallied 13 more counters in the final frame. This was the first shut-out handed the Minersville team in a long time. Shenandoalfs final tally came with seconds to spare as the final gllll sounded giving the boys from M. H. S. a two win one loss record. Incensed by a near loss to a poor Shenandoah team, the Flying Saucers really played a good brand of football as they defeated the host Mahanoy City Maroons by a 14-7 edge. The action occurred so quickly in the first quarter that it was hard to judge what happened. Mahanoy City received the kickoff on the 25 and on a power play moved the pigskin to the 34 yard stripe. Hino, attempting to hand off from the T formation temporarily bobbled the ball, when Bill Mattern broke through, tucked in the ball and scampered the remaining yardage for a bolt out of the blue score. That's the way it stood at halftime in the third period. Paul Souto streaked over from 8 yards out to give MHS the needed tally. Behind by 14-0, the hosts made it 14-7 in the waning moments of the game, then filled the air with passes to try to tie the game, but the Blue and VVhite threw the Maroons for a loss and a spirited team won a great game. Taking a breather from Eastern Conference play, the Miners played host to a Mt. Carmel Catholic team, but as hosts, were not very cordial as the Flying Saucers rolled over the Rams by a 37-13 score. Johnny Skibiel, all-state can- didate, tallied twice and fired the pill to Mattern for two more 6 point tallies to lead the parade. The first score came on this famous Skibiel to Mattern com- bination as Mattern outraced the parochial's secondary. This happened a second time just a few minutes later. The Miners continued to roll as Coady scored and Skibiel tallied on an interception to make it 25-0 at the half 'way mark. Skibiel hit the fireworks in the final half by almost scoring on the kickoff. A few plays later, the score was 31-0 in the Blue 81 Whiteis favor. Then Paul Souto started off tackle for 11 yards and pay dirt to chalk up the score to 37-0. Then the shocktroops went into varsity action, giving the Rams a chance to tally twice to make it a final 37-13 victory for the Battlin' Miners. Playing before a small crowd because of re-scheduling confusion, the Battlin, Miners gave Kulpmont the idea that Hurricane Hazel struck twice. The visiting Saucer men rolled over the Wildcats by a 22-0 count. Led by the in- comparable johnny Skibiol, the Miners had a quick 8-0 lead. This was the way it stood until the third quarter. A bad pass from the Wildcat center sailed into the 3 yard line where a VVildcat attempting to run it up was thrown for another Blue and VVhite safety. On an unusual play, Coady was hit and fumbled on Row 1: Paul Souto Bob VVilliams Gene VValacavage jack Dibiase Row 2: John Lysek Martin Blash Lou Dorazio Paul Narkiewicz the 3, when john Skibiel, trailing the play, picked up the pigskin and took credit for his 2nd TD of the game. Bon Russell electrified the small handful of spec- tators as he broke through the center on a handoff and outraced the Wildcat secondary for a 62 yard run and pay dirt. All three extra points for M. H. S. were missed, but the strong forward Wall held Kulpmont to one first down, which came late in the final period. The seventh game seemed to be the lucky one for the host Miners as they engaged the West Hazleton Wildcats before 5,000 spectators. This Was the turning point in the Battlin, Miners campaign for the conference championship. GXJ84 85lZD Varsity The Wildcats broke the ice in the first chapter by going 73 yards on some 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Miners, angry because they lost a fumble on their first attempt, ran through the men from West Hazleton to tie the score at 7 all. The ensuing kickoff was taken by the Wildcats who went all the way again, and again, to take a commanding 20-7 edge at intermission. S As if they couldn't be stopped, the Wildcats ran the lead to 27-7 in the third period. The Miners steamed up to narrow the margin to 27-14. It looked as if that were final, as the WVildcats marched from their 30 yard st1'ipe to the Blue and VVhite 9 where another fumble cost the West Hazleton team a touch- down and eventually - the game. Then came that fabulous fourth frame. M. H. S. fans sat back to watch what they thought was loss number two on Coach Steflfs schedule. But johnny Skibiel passed to Paul Souto to bring the score board reading to 27-20. Still 7 points behind and with only 7V2 minutes remain- ing, the Blue 81 WVhite charges regained the ball on the kickoff as alert Jim Iamitis fell on a Wildcat bobble. Forty-four yards to go as Skibiel passed and ran to the 9 yard line. Injured, he was taken out only momentarily, as the drive stalled. M. H. S. was penalized 5 yards as Skibiel tried to re-enter the game as the teams lined up. Revengefully, Skibiel toted the pigskin on the next play, bowling over Wildcats to bring the Miners to within one point of a tie. Skibiel was removed from the field because of injuries, but the fans cheered him and hoped for a tie game. A line plunge failed, and the score stood at 27-26 in the Wildcatis favor. Now only Sb minutes remained. After three plays following the kickoff, the West Hazleton team was faced with a fourth down, one foot to go situation. The stone wall of the Blue and White held Moran from making the necessary footage. Bedlam broke in M. H. S.'s stand as the Battlin, Miners took over and Skibiel re-entered the game. Playing the part of Frank Merriwell, Yonko missed twice but his third pass hit Souto who ran to within 30 yards of the goal. With 36 seconds remaining, Skibiel faded back and tossed a long aerial to Mattern on the goal, Touchdown! M. H. S. won a fantastic victory. Minersvilleis armchair quarterbacks were still discussing the West Hazle- ton game as the Miners traveled to meet a St. Clair eleven. This was to be an- other victory and another step in the hopes of a Conference championship. But the Saints opened many an eye as they quickly tallied twice in the first period to lead an astonished Flying Saucer Squad by a 13-0 count. The Miners charged back to narrow the margin to 13-6 at the half-way mark. It looked bad for the Blue and White as they couldn't get to roll in the 3rd and part of the fourth period. Then, with Skibiel, Coady and Russell toting, the Miners narrowed it down to 13-12. The point was missed. That's the way the scoreboard read when the final gun sounded with St. Clairis Saints beating Minersville for the first time in their series, and upsetting the mythical applecart. 1 Q 2' Wg, Q1-0 k 4 'J' V Yww all n W. +1 nf 5 aa. 1 , milf xg 'LB 1 . 3 W.: ' Nu A A ' fx -6 'nh .,, wal? ,ww-ap.-f wma.- Backs The date was Veteranis Day as 21 Seniors bade farewell to interscholastic football as they romped over the Coaldale Tigers at Lansford's Stadium. Dave Donlin, a senior manager, donned a gridiron uniform to attempt the points after a TD. His record was 1 point in 5 tries. The 5 touchdowns were scored by as many players, the oddest one coming when Dan Trasatt was shoved the ball from the Coaldale quarterback who was rushed. Surprised, but nontheless happy, Trasatt scored his lone seasonal tally after this 47 yard run. Elliott scored the Miners lone first period tally, but 3 more were added before inter- mission was called to give the Flying Saucer a 24-0 edge. The Tigers lone tally came against the shocktroops in the third period. This game ended Coach Hal Steflis best season at M. H. S. Managers Score Summary Dorazio, Nolan, Donlin, Peyus 37x15 M. 1-I. Those boys who saw varsity action during the campaign were john Skibiel, Bob Antonio, Bill Mattern, Ken Beach, Francis Kostishak, Dick Reynolds, jack Powell, Bob Peyacovich, Victor Degutis, Iohn Consugai, Stephen Keitsock, Francis McShaw, and Nor- man McClure. john Skibiel was the only boy in the group who had earned a letter on last year's squad. Early in the season the team sported handsome new suits which, during the gruelling twenty-four game schedule, saw plenty of action. Early in the season, also, the paper gave the team little hope of success, but this prophecy proved to -be as false as it was pessimistic. The Team was very green and weak in the fundamentals of basketball until mid-season which shows clearly in the record. However, the boys were willing to learn, and they all gave their time and full effort to better themselves. The season opened at Frackville and the Miners won an exciting game by the score of 46-45. It was a basket by Bob Antonio Qwho scored 20 pointsj in the last five seconds that clinched the victory. The Miners then traveled to Shenandoah and met a very tall experienced team. The Shens won 75-61 in a game which was fairly one-sided. Bill Mattern had 18 points in this game. The White and Blue returned home to play before the hometown folks and defeated Butler 60-47. It was a close game until the last quarter when the Miners scored 20 points to 6 for Butler. Antonio again scored 20 points. Two days later Blythe was defeated 58-44 on the home court. Again it was close until the last quarter. Mattern had 17 points 111 this game to lead all scorers. The League season opnced at Pine Grove where the Crovers won by 75-52. It was a closely contested game until the last quarter when Pine Grove made 19 consecutive points to turn the game into a rout. Varsity exngg 91319 Row 1: Bob Antonio, jack Powell, john Skibiel. Row 2. Ken Beach, Bob Peyakovich, Bill Mattern, Victor Degutis. Minersville then journeyed to Tremont and was defeated 84-45. Tremont was very good and always is hard to beat on the home court. They showed a Well-balanced team. The Battlin Miners returned home to meet Schuylkill Haven, one of the league favorites. It was at this point that the White and Blue seemed to show great improvement. They were defeated by the margin of 3 points 143-40D in a game which saw only nine fouls called. This was the third league loss in a row. Even though most teams would have been discouraged, the Miners kept bustling and learning. During Christmas vacation Frackville visited Minersville and was defeated in a close game 59-56. Skibiel had 18 points and the fans were given an example of things to come. i Seniors A Undefeated Hegins was the next opponent of the Miners and after a hard- fought contest Hegins won 59-55. Kostishak had 14 points and played an excel- lent game in his first role as a starter. January 11 brought Cass Township to town and the Miners defeated them 80-44. All twelve team members played Well and the Condors from up on the hill were never in the game. Skibiel had 22 points. The Whit and Blue visited Orwigsburg and came home with another victory 76-61. Skibiel again was high with 26 points. These two victories were what the Miners needed because they began to steadily improve and in their next outing downed Mt. Carmel 65-45. Mt. Carmel had a big height advantage but the hustle and pressure put on by the Miners won out. Skibiel and Mattern led the team with 19 and 15 points. Once-beaten Cressona was the next opponent for Minersvilleg Cressona was a pre-season favorite to win the league. The Miners made them their fourth straight victim however, by the score of 63-57. Bill Mattern had 18 points. Cn January 25, one of the highlights of the season occured. Minersville defeated Pine Grove. It was another team victory and a fine one for the school. The White and Blue trailing most of the game came on in the last quarter to win 75-69. It was a victory we won't forget for some time and the Miner's 5th straight. Minersville traveled to Sch. Haven and had their winning streak snapped by a Haven team that was red-hot the first half. Half time found Haven leading by 21 points. The Miners battled back to within four points before finally los- ing 67-56. On February 1, league-leading Tremont came into town undefeated in league competition, but not for long. Another great game was played by the Miners who won 66-64. Trailing 62-60, Antonio tied the game for Minersville with 40 seconds left to play. Tremont then proceeded to afreezei' the ball, look- ing for one last shot, but Kostishak stole the ball and made a basket. On the throw-in Skibiel intercepted and put the Miners in front by four points. Tre- rnong converted two fouls to end the scoring and a tremendous victory for Min- ersvi le. 6x.:92 93Llo junior Varsity Hegins defeated the White and Blue hoopsters at Hegins 72-51. It was a close game for three quarters but in the last quarter Hegins came out in front. The Miners were definitely off', for the most part in this game. The next game could easily be termed the nightmare game of the year. Blythe Township had not won a sporting event this year but after meeting Min- ersville the famine ended. Blythe won 46-36. A week later during a blizzard the Miners journeyed .to Cass for a return engagement. It was cold outside but hot inside as the Condors were beaten 60-41. All twelve players shared in the scoring with Mattern getting 26. Once again it was a team victory. The follow- ing game was played at home against an improved Orwigsburg team. Once again the Battlin Miners were victorious to the tune of 63-42. This vaulted them to the fourth place in the league and a possible shot at the play offs. Two days later Mt. Carmel was met on the spacious Mt. Carmel Twp. floor. Minersville trailed by 10 points at the close of the third period. Then they made an amazing come-back and tied the game 61-61 just as the final Whistle blew. The game went into over time and led by Kostishak and Skibiel the Miners won 67-65. Minersville met Cressona in a crucial game at Cressona. Cressona had not lost a game on its home boards and a victory in this game would create a tie for fourth place. The Miners went to work and led by 16 points at the end of the first half. In an evenly contested second half, Cressona could not quite catch up to Minersville. The final score was 74-68 in one of the better games of the season. This clinched a berth in the playoff classic for the Miners. Minersville met Sch. Haven in the first game and the Hurricanes were heavy favorites over the Minei s. As the game progressed, the prediction looked correct until the last quarter. Minersville had a slim 52-49 when they caught fire and outscored Haven 21-6 to take a splendid victory home. Again it was a great team win and only through splendid teamwork and cooperation was this victory achieved. All twelve boys played a part in all of our victories and this Was no exception. Two first-year coaches met in the final game. This was the first time in the history of the league that this had happened. Tremont was first place win- ner and now they conquered the Miners, but only after a hard struggle. Final score was 71-64. All through the game which was well played, the Miners trailed by 2 to 16 points. Both teams were good, and they played a championship game worthy of any two contenders. Thus the season curtain came down on a very successful campaign. The team and coach worked as one unit and should be commended. The Battlin Miners truly battled all the Way, and they were a team any school could be proud of. Games Won: 17. Games lost: 9. Once again, Hegins Township proved to be the nemesis of an otherwise good season by topping the Miners three times during the season. One defeat was a regular league game. The final two were in the playoffs. The other loss was a non-league encounter with St. Clair, the Saints topping the Droskinis men by an 8-4 count. Among its victims, the Blue and White nine listed Pottsville, beating the Crimson Tide by a 4-2 tally, for the first major sports victory, other than football, over Pottsville. In the most exciting game of the season, the Miners were replaying a 6-6 tie at the M. A. A. Park against the Hurricanes of Schuylkill Haven. Going into the final frame, the Havenites led by a 6-4 count. The hectic photo-finish inning started off with Keller smashing a double, then Al Quinn singling. jack Powell gained first base on an error which scored both Keller and Quinn, making a 6-6 tie. Doyle singled to put Powell on second base. The Schuylkill Haven pitcher then tried to pick off Powell at second but miscued, heaving the ball into center field allowing the winning run to score. Skibiel, Antonio, and Doyle mostly shared the mound duties, with Antonio finishing a 5 win no loss season for the top pitcher of the staff. Coach Droskinis, batting champ was Tom Doyle who topped the regu- lars with a .432 average for the season. 4 1 -w. ,.. .-., ' - ' fi . V' . ' -W . ' Y . ,.-. ., in 5 s w F' - . Counters, work tables, and storage bins were installed, and equipment consist- ing of a large refrigerator, a deep freeze, a ten-burner two-oven stove, utensils, and trays and cutlery sufficient foi serving two hundred people was purchased. Cooking for the cafeteria was done by Mrs. Michael Madden and her assistant, Mrs. Ernest Simmons. Menus for the coming week were published on preceding Wediiesdays, and meal tickets were bought at specified times. The price per meal was twenty- five cents, a real bargain price since all meals were carefully planned so as to supply the full nutritional value required of a lunch. Milk, bread, butter, a protein rich food such as meat, potatoes, vegetable and a dessert made up each meal. The menus were varied, and over a hundred students used this new facility daily. A number of students have also been working at lunchtime in the cafeteria. We think this new venture has run smoothly and has been managed very successfully this term, for many students from town, in addition to those out-of- town, are now eating their lunches at school. - -- ADVERTISEMENTS Don't miss reading the large section of adveiisements that follows.
