THE EVALUATION VISIT You can be proud of your high school- These welcome words were part, last year, of the oral report given by Dr. George Eichler, Chairman, to the assembled Evaluation Committee, the faculty, and the Board of Education. The meeting climaxed an intensive three- day examination into all areas of high school service from instruction to plant facilities. Previously, the high school staff had spent eighteen months in arriving at a mutually satisfactory philosophy and in preparing a self-evaluation to pre- sent to the Committee for review. On March 14, 15, 16, 1949, the thirteen dis- tinguished educators pictured and I or mentioned here visited classes, inter- viewed teachers and pupils, assessed the worth of assembly, the pupil activi- ties, the library, the staff, instruction, the guidance service, the educational outcomes, and the administration - and, throughout, impressed everyone with their friendliness and thoroughness. Rated highly were'staff, quality of instniction, educational outcomes, school assembly, and administration. Subsequently a three-three plan for junior-Senior High School was adopted, art, vocal music and instrumental music classes were transferred to more suitable and better equipped locations, a faculty room and a health examination room were made avail- able, and enriched curriculum and guidance services were under dis- cussion. The final report of the Committee assured Minersville High of continued accreditation by the Association of Secondary Schools of the Middle States, an honor it has been proud of for nineteen years. This program is designed to give everyone a chance to take part in some dramatic presentation during his or her four years in high school. There are home room programs, special programs, the Animal Play, and the Variety Show. All these provide at least one opportunity for each student to see for himself how it feels to perform before an audience. During the course of the year each home room presents a program which may range from a debate to a scientific demonstration. The majority, however, present short skits. The Special Programs are assigned to the different classes. This year the seniors under the direction of Miss Glenwright presented a play entitled Christmas in a Cobbler Shopw. This drama focused upon the shop of a lonely old cobbler at Christmastide and showed how he found the real meaning of Christmas. The juniors presented the Thanksgiving program which consisted of a comedy and various musical and miscellaneous numbers, all under the direction of Miss Bell. The sophomores extolled our two great presidents: Washington and Lincoln. Mrs. Parker directed this program. The freshmen brought the group of special programs to an end with the Memorial Day pro- gram, honoring our soldier dead. This program was presented by Miss Knapp. In addition to these activities, the student who is really interested in dramatics is able to try for a part in the Annual Play. This production is pre- sented to the entire community. This Winter Mr. Purcell, the director, pre- sented a hilarious comedy, Tish,'. Tish relates the adventures of three spinster ladies who are spending some time in the west. The cast played at both performances to a very appreciative house. By participating in all these activities, every student is given a founda- tion in the dramatic or entertainment field. Although he may never in later life be a part of any such production described here, his training in school will give him a greater sense of poise in his dealings with other people and will certainly enable him to appreciate more the efforts of professional actors and entertainers. This is, after all, the goal of our school in this field, and I am certain that it is being very successfully achieved. As this volume goes to press, no definite plans have been made for the Variety Show. However, rumor has it that there will be such a program in April under the direction of Mr. Duffy. .Al 7 7 5 if l r wif 2 E5 sl A Prepz Letitia Carberry, Lizzie Aggie Ellen Leighton Cliarita Luther Hopkins Callie Hopkins Charlie Sands Bettina Trent Sheriff Lem Pike VVesley Andrews Denby Crimes Dorice Gaylord GTISHS' QA Comedy in Tliree Actsj lred under the direction of Nlr. .Ierome ll. Once select- ed, they report to the high school before all special programs when their captain, this year Claire Nlaurer, assigns the girls definite posts. They are posted at the entrances to the auditorium and are easily identified by their traditional blue and white hats and arm bands. Mr. Keller taught us many first aid methods which safeguard a player'from further injury when being taken from the field. A player may have a more seyere .injury than is at first apparent, and clumsy handling may do more damage than the original injury. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Keller for his capable guidance. GSNZO Under the supervision of Mr. NVingaris, the Art Club has had a most successful year. This year a familiar face Qand figurej was prominent in Memorial Stadium. Mr. Ray Green, who tutored the Battlin, Miners in 1945, took over as line and jay Vee Coach. Mr. Lewis was seen with the inevitable autumn frown, as his worries and hopes were donning pads and getting into shape. Mr. Sobolesky coached the Freshman squad and added Whois tired? to our list of notable quotes. The loss of ten regulars from last year's squad was a factor'of much dis- cussion around town, but a bigger factor was that of the return of a dream pair of ends, Monti and Hummel, at tackle and guard, Bendrick and Gosack, and at center we retained Lon Gittleman, who saw lots of action as guard last year. The backfield turned out to be a perfect mass of versatility. Purcell, a leading ground gainer from last year, could plunge, swing around end, and specialized in a certain play that blasted Tamaqua, Shenandoah, and Old Forge. uliig, burlyv George Pahira, while neither big nor burly, was a whale of a fullback. He did everything but kick and play trombone. George Ege our wingback gave the opponents many a scare with the weak reverse, the play voted most sconted of '49.,' At blocker we had Whalen who took a thorough beating from big ends all year, and he played at fullback when Pahira was ont. , W cf .wmimwievwm ,, M ,,.,.. , Y -I jack Lewis Ray Green Albert Sobolesky Our fifth hackfield man was Taraskavage, who played wing and kicked our extra points. That left two spots open and they were occupied hy Elherti, Padelsky, and Grecky. Crecky was the fifth man in every opponents lvackfield. 1 Our animal starter with Cass was played at home. Cass re- ceived and surged to the Blue 61 White 20. There, Miuersville took over. Pahira scored twice, once in the first quarter and again in the second. Walter Rizzardi intercepted a pass on the 30 and scored immediately following the kickoff. Purcell passed to Hummel for the point after touchdown. In the last quarter Ege swung around end to score as the game ended 25-0. 2 Sch. Haven played host to the Battliu' Miners in what was termed 'ithe game of the week. A smooth Blue and White offense smothered the Hurricanes in a 27 point avalanche. In the First quarter. Ege trotted 30 yards on the weak reverse, Haven received and had to kick out of danger. Nl. H. S. then sent Purcell over on six plays. Taraskavage kicked to make it 13-0. Pahira plunged for a 6-pointer in the second and again the conversion was good. Our last touchdown was scored by VVhalen in the fourth. Taraskavage threaded the uprights and the game ended 27-0. P A H I R A W H A L E N S T U T Z, HUDUPNNHDU WOPUJOO Offensive Line 3 Again Nlinersville hit the road to play Shenandoah and tumlmled a strong Blue Devils team 34-13. Shenandoah scored first on Sincavageis plunge to make it 7-0. Millersville retaliated with a pass to Hummel who crossed standing up to tie it up. Purcell then scored to move us ahead 14-T. Shenandoah scored on a pass and at the half We lead 14-13. In the third quarter Hummel and Purcell repeated with a pass, and a cut-hack and Pahira plunged while Toe Taraskavag.5e converted two more to make it 3-1-13. The Mountaineers put up a spirited battle, but in the second quarter Buddy Purcell romped over for a T. D. and Miuersville was never headed. Pahira and Gittleman scored in the last frame with a line plunge and an intercep- tion respectively. Taraskavage booted two out of three to make the score 20-0. Minersville,s stock took a sudden dip that night for both Purcell and Ege were badly injured. 6 A battle-Worn Blue 8: White aggre- gation was waiting for Kulpmont when they invaded Minersville. M. H. S. scored first on a pass to Big john Hummel who carried the mail 70 yards to put Kulpmont in the hole 6-0. 'llaraskavages attempt was good and the score was 7-0. Kulp- mont struck hack with a ninety-nine yard march which started with a desperation pass and ended with Prinerands tight-rope Walking on the sidelines for 35 yards and a touchdown. Pahira broke the tie and the conversion was good to give Miners- ville a 14-7 victory. 7 lllythe was our next opponent, and we met them with a patched up haekfield, for it was doubtful if Ege would finish the season. Our line refused to budge, however, and in the sec- ond stage Pahira flipped a pass to Hummel who scored on a 30 yard seainper. S Approximately one-half of the population of Minersville followed the team to Tamaqua where the boys gave a star- studded performance. Purcell made Minersvilleis longest run of the year when he galloped 94 yards for our first T. D. Again that pass from Purcell to Hummel clicked for its 5th touchdown of the year. Pahira plunged from the one to make it 19-0 and after Titus scored for Tamaqua. Whalen toted the hall down- field on 5 plays for a tally to sink Tamaqua 26'-6. 9 The tension was mounting to fever pitch as the game with NV. Scranton loomed nearer. The XVest Scranton coach told his squad that if they heat Nlinersville they could lose all the rest of their games and still have a successful season. From the kickoff to the pay-off there were -17 minutes and 38 seconds of nerve-wrecking futility. Then. on what was merely a safe play to keep possession of the hall, Pahira shook off 3 tacklers and struggled 65 yards to keep Nl. H. S. on top in the Southern division. EASTERN CONFERENCE TITLE GAME Minersville was easily the most football minded town 'in the Anthracite region for approximately six weeks preceding December 3 and fifteen weeks after that. Signs were posted all over town with WVelcome Old Forge as the key strain. The Varsity squad consisted of the following players: SuN1o1is: Frank Hendrick. WVith his hard work and the cooperation of the boys, the team finally started to develope into players who will be varsity calibre in a few years. Many of these boys, having little or no experience, had tough sledding until they began to find themselves at home on the court. This yearis campaign was a fairly successful one for the junior Varsity. In their win column was a smashing upset victory over Schuylkill Haverfs -I. Some outstanding 'work on the court this season was done by George Shellick, a freshman, who will probably be a varsity star in his next three years. Along with defensive ability, he can shoot accurately with both hands. jerry Farley, with another year to play, has a' good ,eye for outside shots. Burke, playing his first year of basketball, is a good pivot man, special- izing on defense. The inexperience ot our team may have contributed to our losses as only two members ot the squad were seniors. We opened with the 1948 defending champions, Cass Township, who showed their power by shutting us out 10-0. We then traveled to Port Carbon where we lost 6-5. Pahirais homer in the last inning wasnit quite enough of a rally. Cressona came to town to start a three game home stand and we broke our losing streak by trouncing them 18-1. After losing by a 7-4 score to Sch- uylkill Haven, we downed Orwigsburg 9-8 in an extra two-inning thriller. Opening the second half, we visited Cass Township Where they handed us the second and only two shut-outs of the year with a score of 3-O. Port Car- bon then came to the park and went home beaten 6-3. At Cressona we made At Schuylkill Haven, although the score was it two in a row by winning 8-3. 4-1. we had a no-hitter pitched against us. Roberts stole around the bases for our only run.
