A William Shakespeare once said, All the world is a stage.' The Burro Staff was out to prove that all around campus Is a stage and you were performcrs! We tried to cakh you in moments of badness, sadness, boredom, pleasure, defeat, and victory All of these special moments have been aptu and preserved m this book .. your ti ket to the past. This year has brought manv different props and themes to all of us. The upperclassmen got the feeling of being invaded by Altem when w - le that there were over three-hundred fifty freshmen We felt like the cast of Cone With the Wind on coronation night and we thought we would b tie Off Dead when w e did not do so well on exams. Of course, in the beginning, the Back To Schoof blues were present Some of us even thought we h play the role ot The Karate Kid and fight on campus. Even though, we made it through the Broadway hits and the box office flops For the most part, wc all stuck together and helped each other to n lasting memories Now the curtain ha; closed on another year. We had to say farewell to our seniors and we arc prepared to continue f rr school a better place No one knew what the future years would bring but the roles we played to make the 1986-87 school year a great production should remembered. The coronation, of course! This is a very special event that is anticipated all year, and when spring finally rolls around, our school is alive with excitement. We wait for it all year and when the big night arrives, it is lived to the fullest! Everyone who goes to this yearly event is entertained by fellow students who perform on stage. Afterwards, a dance is held. Some think the funnest part is seeing their friends dressed up! The coronation means many different things to different people, but to all it means to have a good time and a night to remember forever. 14 Candid a Candids 1S 1 Angela Carter and Juli Meyers 2 Misti Bethune 3 Ricky Stilweil 4 Jodi, Penny, and Renee 5 Sheila. Everything from long to short to punk to flat tops. We had it all and everything was in. This has definitely been a year to be yourself and look however you want. Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person by the way they wear their hair. The hairstyles around the domes this year were all different and unique. Just like our student body! Candid 21 Kim Sue Willilams escorted ish After school is usually a time to go home, prop your feet up, and relax after a long, hard, day of school. While most of us are sitting in front of a TV watching cartoons, there are some who have other things to do. Why would anyone try to balance homework, a job, and It’S keep up a good social life ... all at the same time? Whatever the reason, many students at Mineral Wells High have jobs. Jobs of every kina. From work- ing at fast food restaurants and gas stations, to secretaries and even baby-sitting. You can ask anyone who has All in a job and you will probably hear that it takes A LOT of extra time, energy, and patience. That includes working until midnight and doing homework until 3:00 o'clock in the morn- ing, then actually staying awake during class. 24 Candids a Day’s ncrk Even though working outside of school has negative aspects, most students think it is worth it. On a positive side, those who work, have extra money. There are also classes such as VOE, OEA, and DE that require you to work on a job. These classes also give more credits than usual. Most of our working students will easily admit that keeping a job is tough. However, these students usually manage to handle it. The ones who do work, keep up with homework, and have a social life worth talking about, should be commended. So when you happen to bump in- to a member of our student body who happens to be on the job, give them a break — they deserve it! Our 1987 senior class kept our campus alive with their unique personalities and lively sense of humor. It can never be said that our seniors did not try to have fun. “I refuse to grow up!” seemed to be the motto of some of our seniors. They made the best of their last year at Mineral Wells High. The seniors were up to much mischief this year, beginning with painting an 87” on the dome. They stayed all night on the school campus and also at Ram Stadium on Homecom- ing night to ward off any invaders. The junior class did show up, but it was nothing the seniors could not handle. Even the waterballoons that were thrown on them did not dampen their spirits! From hanging out on Hilley's parking lot to wearing out the stretch between Mineral Wells and Weatherford, our 87 seniors seemed to be everywhere. To the class of 87: we en- joyed getting to know you! Thanks for brightening the year, our campus is not going to be the same without you! Best wishes and good luck in all you do. That's exactly how the sophomore class always is. They are not at the bottom like freshmen, and not at the top as seniors are. How did it feel to be in the middle? Most sophs seemed to feel it was an ok situation. After struggling through the freshman year', things could only get better. Usually the only complaint that was heard was that the sophomore year seems harder. There is no doubt that extra work is worth not being called a freshman. You could usually catch the sophomore guys playing a game of bump-bump out on the front lawn. After that was banned they decided to just toss the football around. The sophomore girls usually hung out in clans. They followed the senior guys around most of the time. Many of the sophomore girls complained, Guys our own age are too immature! All tne sophs agreed that the 1986-87 school year was better than the last. Now they are closer to the top. Look Out WORLD, here comes the class of 1989. 62 Sophomores Scott Aaron Kenna Addison Dusty Alexander Randy Alexander Hazel Allen Tabby Almond Victoria Alverez Valencia Amburn Robert Anguinio Shannon Archer Carol Arneson Laura Austin Buddy Ballinger Charles Ballenger Chris Baker Debbie Banda Christy Barham Mark Barham )ana Barnett Catalina Bautista Valerie Beard Teresa Bell Sophomores 63 Kim Blevins Christina Bohannon Michelle Brooks Brad Brown Clay Brown Brad Bullock Arthur Burkett Misty Burns Janet Burson Valerie Burson Robert Carriker Angela Carter Joshua Casey Sopheap Chao Ray Christopher Sue Chung Suzanne Clary Cindy Cobb 64 Sophomore Lisa Coffee Mechelle Cottrell Leslie Cozart Kelly Craig John Crawford William Crounse Tamela Culmer Kay Dahl Bonnie Davis Marsha Davis Kevin Defell Tony Delgado Ginger Denham Jaimy Deshazor Norma Dickson Scott Dollar Chad Dow April Drew Mark Ely Sophomore 65 Bert Evans Doyle Fain Michelle Farnett B. The class of 90 seniors, otherwise known as freshmen, almost outnumbered the rest of the en- tire student body during the 1986-1987 school year. With over 350 freshmen, they may have felt more secure but they still had the usual freshman like traits. How did you know a fish from everyone else? They were the ones who wore their Jr. High band shirts throughout the year, they carried their Jr. High duffle bags, and they were also the ones who ran to the cafeteria at the sound of the dismissal bell for lunch. You could also know a freshman by the way he seemed to study his feet while walking through the halls or by the way they were terrified to turn around when someone called their name. Now do you remember? These are all traits of freshmen, but we have all possessed them at one time. There is no doubt that this class will have their revenge on some un- suspecting future fish. But we have to say Congratulations, class of 1990, most of you cannot be freshmen anymore! Freshmen have all the fun. Wherever Maria went, a sweet smile, a happy hello and a cute accent greeted the whole student body of MWHS. Her per- sonality bubbled over everywhere she went. She enjoyed all of her classes at MWHS but admitted that drama was her most favorite. She performed as Elaine in Arsenic Old Lace. Maria wanted to be in every activity MWHS had to offer. She was cer- tainly a Jack of all Trades, She visited other countries as an exchange student but said that MWHS was her choice of all the others. Adios! Mucho gusto en cono cerlos. Gabriel The Swede Lun- dkvist, a heartthrob for many of the girls in MWHS who were swept- away by his Swedish accent. As a Junior, he was enrolled in advanced classes such as Chemistry and Trigonometry. His en- thusiasm for sports showed as he kicked the pigskin for 94 Candids the Rams. Gabriel ran the cross country track and did well on the track team in the spring. Tennis is one of his great loves. He can eat loads of hamburgers and tubs of ice cream anytime you offer him. His favorite musical group is ZZ Top. We will always remember you, Gabriel. You helped make MWHS a greater school. Escaped: Pat Strycker ____ There is a group of people at our school who many of us take for granted. Our cafeteria and custodian workers work long and hard hours to keep our school looking nice and to serve school lunches. The custodians are always cleaning up trash (that should not have been thrown down anyway), erasing the graffiti off the bathroom walls and keeping the school lawn and trees looking nice. The cafeteria ladies work hard so we can eat school lunches. No one ever thinks of what goes into this task every day. We may not realize it, but it does take a lot of work and time on their part. Even though we do not even stop to con- sider the labor these people do, we should. To the cafeteria and custodian workers — keep up the good work. 102 Candids £ ¥ $ Beautiful Nominees: L to R: Mary Thomas Most Beautiful: Scott O'Neil and Amey Not pictured: John Ruelas. The season started off with many new faces showing up at the first class meeting, but most of the prospective new members had to drop the course because of House Bill 72. However, the lack of new members didn't tarnish the enthusiasm of the handful of avid debaters, as they began the job of researching. The dedicated few went on to resolve the major topic of the year. The topic debated this year was: That the Federal Government Should Imple- ment Comprehensive Long-Term Policy in the United States. When you saw one, a group was sure to follow. As our 86-87 Drum Major, Ricky Stilwell saici, Band's great! The only thing I don't like is the reputation some of the non-band members gave us. I wish there was more school support. You could see the band practicing almost every morning, regardless of the weather. It is said that after you share an experience with someone, you are closer to them; in the band's case this was true. Through all of their early morning practices, games, pep-rallies, and contests they stuck together and worked as a team. What came out of all their hard work??? They received a 1-rating in marching at a contest in Wichita Falls, but to them it was more than just winning. It meant believing in each other and our school, even when things did not look so well. It meant keeping the Ram spirit when they were penalized for playing too loud at the Hirchi game, even though the other band played just as loud. Even though the band members might want to forget some ex- periences that they have shared, the strong friendships that developed will be around for a long time to come! KALEIDOSCOPE Kaleidoscope defined means: a variegated, changing, endless variety of varicolored forms and patterns ... and this years Kaleidoscope is exactly that. Under the direction of Don Devous, the show choir busily prepared their pop and jazz music along with choreography for a multi-farious semester. In November, the group performed for the Hope Fashion Show at the Crazy Water Hotel. They sang and danced to such tunes as. Together Wherever We Go, Body and Soul, and Puttin' on the Ritz. During the holiday season, the group sang many of the all time favorite Christmas Carols as well as a favorite entitled The Most Wonderful Time of the Year . At the school on Dec. 18th, they performed Overjoyed by Stevie Wonder and then sang background with Mr. Devous on the classic Oh Holy Night. This was only one of the many concerts that were performed by Kaleidoscope from Dec. 4-19. At Solo and Ensemble on Feb. 21st, the group performed Body and Soul and Le Jazz Hot. To say the least, they were definitely hot at the Competition. With this steamy rendition from Victor Vic- toria, all were hoping for sizzling ratings at State Competition at Austin in June. During May 13-18, the group discovered the true meaning of the musical sound on their tour to Nashville Tennessee. As they toured the many sights of the town, all were hoping to see their name in the bright lights of the musical scene... someday!!! William Eudy. Jami Gilman. Their actions did not live up to their expectations. The Varsity football team began the year with new coaches and a prediction of a successful season from the players, coaches and even the fans. At the beginning of the season, people thought that the Rams could have won district. The Rams predicted a good season, but what you predict seasons on is how many lettermen are returning from the year before. By using that as an indicator of the season. It didn't look very good, because the Rams only had seven returning starters. The season started out with a series of losses against two district teams. After two wins, and one loss, the Rams began their district game against Vernon. The Rams lost against Vernon and Hirsch. The Ram team came back from its initial losses with three consecutive wins against Azle, Burkburnett, and Graham to put the Rams in third place alone with a 5-5 season record in district 3-AAAA. Distributive Education Clubs of America are to prepare h i iah ••Aimt and motivate people for marketing careers. DECA provides students a way to secure entry-level, mid-management, and entrepreneurial positions in marketing. Students learn that profit is a principle on which our whole economic system revolves. More than one-third of all occupations are related to marketing. More employees will be needed to buy, sell, pro- mote and distribute goods and services. Students participated in many after school ac- tivities and a fund raiser. Vocational Agriculture, to most students, meant learning about something that really interests all of those who participated. Many will go on to pursue a career in agriculture. Very few of us knew how they got into the Stu- dent Council or what they represented. The sponsor the 86-87 school year was Mrs. Mary Evans, with president Kris Knight, vice president Sherry Addison, secretary Shelly Young, treasurer William Eudy, and parliamentarian Clayton Evans, they worked together to plan activities for the whole stu- dent body. They sponsored various assemblies, a teacher appreciation day, a spring clean-up day, and a fall festival. The Student Council was also responsible for changing the sign at the entrance to Ram Boulevard. Mrs. Evans stated, Our Student Council was made up of our school's leaders. This was very well true. These students became members through their leadership in Junior High and High School. The class officers from grade 7 to 12 were automatically elected into the Student Council. The of- ficers from all of our various clubs were also represented in the Student Council. The of- ficers were elected by the student body the previous year. Those students who wanted to be in the Student Council but did not fall into any of these categories could apply by application. Even though very few people realized it, our Student Council did many things for our school. They were the representatives for the entire student body. Although we did not hear very much about them, they had many talents. They should all be con- gratulated on a job well done during the 1986-87 school year. MY CREED I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon. I seek opportunity to develop whatever talents God gave me — not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by hav- ing the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any earthly master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act mvself, enjoy the benefit of my creation and to face the world, boldly and say — this, with God's help I have done. All this is what it means to be an American. Todd can you tell us where the head is? 236 Closing I The Last Waltz Well Kids, Thdt Shakespeare fellow once said some spiel about, All the world being a stage and the people only players. I guess there's a grain or two of truth in that, but I prefer to think of the world as the biggest movie set, filming the greatest story ever told. It's a major pro- duction with a cast of billions, each playing his part as best he can. Some roles are juicier than others, but we all get equal billing. Everyday brings a new scene, every year a new reel. Some of us are in the first reels of High School, for others, this is the last picture show. But before you drag out the kleenex, this is no tear jerker. This is a real epic we're making here. The sort of thing Cecil B. DeMille used to dream of, or George Lucas or that Spielberg guy for that matter. This movie, Life, is as big and grand as you and me and that Great Director in the Sky want to make it. But be careful kids, cuz' there ain't no sequels. All we can do is say our lines, take our falls (you do your own stunts on this flick), and try to get along with the other characters. You have to be careful not to get caught up in too many subplots; one false move and you're written out of the script for good. Romance, intrique, excitement, it's all here. Play your part well and I guarantee they'll remember you at Oscar time. Here's looking at you, kids t t Taking the yellow submarine crusin' Looking back through the years. Boy, I'm glad this year's over with.
