Text from Pages 1 - 248 of the 1970 volume:

... Since the beginning of time, Man has looked up - and has sought to attain that which he saw. With Man's footsteps now indelibly imprinted on the moon, part of the dream has been reached; the restless urgings inherent in Man, however, force him to imagine an even more brilliant future. The future is ours to strive toward and to attain. THE BURRO 1970 Mineral Wells High School Mineral W ells, Texas i Volume 57 'One small step for man; one giant step for mankind. Tranquil beauty is found as one pauses to enjoy peace and quiet. 12 14 . . .Striving for perfection. . . .Studying long hours. We gaze, awed, on aVhirling, modern world, on a Nation that has reached out with eager, groping hands to conquer the mysteries of the earth and now reaches out with new intensity, constantly seeking, anxiously probing, exploring the dark chasms of the unknown to grasp and conquer the infinite universe in the immortal clutch of knowledge. We watch, cautiously, the determined stride of our Nation and catch our breaths. . . for tomorrow we know that ours will be this conquest. We hasten our pace, striving harder, moving forward, molding youth into man, man into a productive citizen, preparing for tomorrow. We set our goals higher and higher, building new strengths in mind and body, gaining confidence and the power of knowledge to sustain our flight through life. Persistently we move onward, pushing farther and farther, until suddenly we realize that we are caught up in our Nation’s intricate pattern of progress. . . .A SMALL PART OF THE SPACE AGE. Countdown 1970 17 It is seldom one finds so many fine qualities in one person, but today we pause to commend one within our midst. As Mrs. Fuston comes into contact with countless young people each day, she realizes they are reaching for an understanding; she gives one an awareness of what the future promises. She helps the student in his quest for knowledge. We proudly dedicate the 1969-70 Burro to Mrs. Christine Fuston. Seeking a more perfect existence - a life of contentment and satisfaction - that is Mr. Curtis Scharnberg. He is one who serves others with a sincere desire for the betterment of man. He faces the challenges that arise with the persever- ance to meet these challenges. He continues to search for the ultimate answer to the problems of mankind. Proudly we dedicate the 1969-70 Burro to Mr. Curtis Scharnberg. 19 In Memory DAVID HUGHES 1952 - 1969 Away I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away! With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair, It needs must be, since he lingers there. (James Whitcomb Riley) A dministration Board Of Trustees SEATED Left to Right: Mr. Louis Schober, Vice President; Dr. A. T. Koonce, President; and Mr. Jon Baum, Secretary. STANDING: Dr. James D. McCall, Mr. Sam Hawes, Mr. George Roberts, and Mr. Luther Waddy. They Further Education Membership in the board is an indication of civic pride and dedication. Board members freely offer their time and efforts for the future of our rapidly expanding community. Not only are the mem- bers of the board highly regarded in academic circles, but in their community as well. These able, education-minded and progressive adults are our guiding forces. We look to them for leadership and responsible attitudes toward the role of the educator and the educated in our area. Each of us has come to appreciate their efforts on our behalf through our school. 22 Superintendent Carl H. Craighead TO ALL STUDENTS: The personality of the Mineral Wells High School during the 1969-70 school year has been a composite of all of the personalities of some 900 students working together for 9 months, because the High School is really you, the students, and not just the stone edifice as we generally think. The personality of the High School, projected through you has been an exceptional one; and I trust that you will remember this as a year of pleasant interaction with fellow students, a year in which you received concerned guidance from devoted teachers, and most of all, a year in which you achieved your goals. Several schools in our nation had to close for short periods this year because of depleted funds. Ours did not. Several schools had unrest and disruption. Ours did not. School Officials recognized these things that many people take for granted, and we hereby express our gratitude to the patrons of our community and to the student body for another outstanding year. A SPECIAL WORD TO THE SENIORS: To the Seniors, I would say that today the challenges facing our communities and our nation call for intelligent, committed, active leadership. We. as concerned adults, believe that our money and our efforts have been spent to prepare you to meet the social, vocational, and college challenges of today. Just as pa- rents and teachers have been dedicated to a task of assisting you in this development, so will you be dedi- cated now to active involvement in civic and professional affairs in your community, your church, and your nation. You are entering this work today, not tomorrow. The tomorrow for which you have been preparing is now. Ybu have been the leaders this year: You are leaders today. I salute you, the Seniors of 1970, upon completion of your public school work. Sincerely, Carl H. Craighead Superintendent of Schools 23 Other Administrators Who Give Valuable Assistance MR.
