VISIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND NECESSARY. FAINT, PERHAPS, AND FLEETING, YET THEY LIE BEHIND EVERY GREAT UNDERTAKING. ALWAYS DISTANT, ELUSIVE. BECKONING, THEY LEAD US ON TO ACHIEVEMENT. HENCE WE HAVE CALLED THIS: The 1964 BURRO Your- Book of V i ? i o n ? Mineral U4 s Hi Scdool Mineral Wells, '6 ex as The eyes of billions look hopefully to America, Symbol of freedom and opportunity for the common man. This Nation's progress toward the better life is the inspiration of mankind everywhere. JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY 1917-1963 ... The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it, and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. ... my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. ... With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own. — John Fitzgerald Kennedy Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961 (Sent to THE BURRO from The White House, Washington, D. C.) Let us today renew our dedication to the ideals that are American. Let us pray for His divine wisdom in banishing from our land any injustice or intolerance or oppression to any of our fellow Americans whatever their opinion, whatever the color of their skins — for God made all of us, not some of us, in His image. All of us, not just some of us, are His children. ... we have learned anew that nothing is so enduring as faith, and nothing is so degrading as hate. ... I ask you now in the Congress and in the country to join with me in express- ing and fulfilling that faith in working for a nation, a nation that is free from want and a world that is free from hate — a world of peace and justice, and freedom and abundance, for our time and for all time to come. — Lyndon Baines Johnson Stale of the Union Message January 8, 1964 (Sent to THE BURRO from The White House, Washington, D. C.) LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Our American heritage — a faith in in- dividualism, in freedom, and in equality — has made us the greatest nation on earth. Our task is to maintain and carry on that heritage. THE AMERICAN'S CREED I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democ- racy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable, established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my coun- try to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies. William Tyler Page 3u jUcmoriam Qinu tuf, T 1946 - 1963 Each individual, in his lifetime, lays a foundation representing the good that comes from him. Some people leave no foundation or one that goes unseen, others--a building that can be seen far and wide. Jimmy, yours was such a building. Right now you’re probably thinking of your friends and loved ones. You commanded their fullest respect and admiration for your kindness, fairness, loyalty, and unselfishness. You lived your life to the fullest extent, always willing to give a helping hand in a time of need. You had a kind word for everyone and kept a bright smile on your face. Even when things weren’t going too well, you kept your head held high. Most of all you were dedicated and loyal to your friends. You gave to them the best you had. We’ll never forget you, Jimmy, we’ll never forget............ Today we feel like we are ‘veterans’ of nearly four years of hard work, and though our group has been diminished in a number of ways, (includ- ing cupid’s well-aimed arrows), everyone knew the SENIORS were here! “Those of us who have survived, passed into a truly ‘golden age’ in this, our Senior year at MWHS. Though our hair be grayer than it is today, we can always look back and say we left the gift of memory to each person in the class of 1964--memory of friends we loved, of a job well done, of school days that will never come to us again--for the Class of 1964 now has another work to do. We now have three years down (almost) and one more to go to stretch the metaphor a bit. During those three years, we have worked hard and played hard, made many friends, and grown in many ways. The Class of ’65 is a great team with all of the quality and the driving force necessary to reach our goal. There is no doubt that we will reach that goal, for now we, as JUNIORS are just preparing for the big competition, and here everything and everyone is on our side. The real competition will come when we have crossed the goal and find ourselves facing a challenging opponent. Then all of the things we have learned in our preparation will be tested. Let s remember this, and while we are here, give all we can of our- selves so that we may receive the most from our school. Pretty FFA Sweetheart Seniors order invitations. Our flags fly at half staff. “We are the Class of ’66’’ has been ringing through the halls of MWHS for two very short, but very dear years. Our high school days are now half over. In these two years, we have laid firm foundations for our next two, our last two high school year s, and for all our life ahead. Our friend- ships are broader, deeper, and truer. Our search for wisdom and a keener understanding of our fellow students has yielded its rewards. These two years of invaluable experiences in working together crowd our minds with unforgetable memories when our school song rings clear and strong in assembly. SOPHOMORES are recalling the many hours of just talking among friends. We are reliving our class dances, stunts, pep rallies, bonfires, and planned programs. When we hear our Alma Mater, we are hearing words which stand for those ideals which we hold so dear--honesty, loyalty, devotion to God, integrity, and hope for those many years ahead which will only burn more deeply and indelibly into our hearts our love for our own MWHS, and our class- mates of the Class of ’66. It's a place of scenes we enjoy and love- It's a place people, especially ex-students, like to return for visits or just to wander about the campus and corridors------------ AND OF PEOPLE WE LOVE AND ADMIRE It's a place of lively times- MINERAL WELLS HIGH SCHOOL continues to be a place held dear in the hearts of students who have graduated, as well as those who will attend in the future. Sometimes it reminds us of a day when sad memories come to mind. It's located in a town nestled in a surrounding of mountains— Through the door of this building we have passed, first as freshmen,-------our high school years before us, and last, as seniors, with a wistful look behind and high hopes ahead. Surrounding the door- way, clusters the idealism of our concep- tion of high school. This is the door of our cathedral of learning. May the doors always be open and may the students who will follow us find the entrance inviting.
