S BECKY CAUDLE . . .in her natural ways. We've heard of rumors about babying cars, but could there possibly be a little White English Ford at Mineral Springs that a certain girl must be extra careful with? fShe claims her car has mixed e motions. JAnd is this the girl who can question her teachers so naively yet so sincerely? Yes, it's Becky Caudle who as a freshman asked her home economics teacher, How many sleeves does a blouse have? Becky rarely to be funny, these are her natural ways. She often makes the honor roll, and because of her high scholas- tic achievement, she was chosen a junior Marshal. A very active member of the Youth for Christ Club, Becky has given much of her spare time toward the advancement of the club's purpose. As a citizen of the school community, she is a valuable asset. Who's MICKEY AUSTIN Ladies' Man A brown thatch of hair, a happy-go-lucky personality, and hidden muscles under his shirt sleeves describe the all-American boy on campus, Mickey Austin. Suave, debonair, dark, and mischievous, Mickey is referred to as the ladies' man around Mineral Springs. Not only is he popular with girls because of his masculine charms, but he is also liked by boys equally well because he typifies the regular guy. One of the four track team Captains, and a member of the cross-country team, he has helped to lead the boys through many victories. As a halfback on the football team, Mickey proved himself an essential player during the season. Yes, he E a vital guy, not only for the pleasure he affords the girls, but also for the way he brightens up the school scene. Who DARRELL CHURCH Wonder Wit Who's the guy with a knack for changing cars Qfirst a Chevy and now a Renaultj, who's always running around with a crowd, forever wearing crazy hats, and referring to Mr. Stroupe as Big 'Dave and getting away with it? You guessed it-that's Darrell! Often referred to as the Wonder Wit, he is known around Mineral Springs for his witty and friendly ways. Behind his glasses you'll often see a blushing face and widespread grin, topped off by a nutty sense of humor. For his leadership abili- ties, Darrell was chosen as a junior Marshal last year and as Vice-President of the Key Club this year. A very dependable fellow, Darrell is the boy to have around. His imagination combines explosively with his wit to form a personality which is genuinely unique. NANCY CROMER ll Suzy!! Now y'all, says the pert red-head. These are the trade marks of one of the most popular students at Mineral Springs. For whether she is c h e e r l e a di n g, gabbing with her friends,or smiling her winning smile, our Nancy is a charmer. Known here at school as a sharp dresser, Nancy has an original streak in her fashion taste which tends to start fads among the girls. An example of this is the usage of a toothbrush to tease her locks. As a Co-Chief Cheerleader, Nancy plays an important role in spurring school spirit. She is. . . Suzy! Yeah, uh huh- Now students, we know you know your stuff 3 This red-headed girl yells loud enough. She suzies to her left and suzies to her right. We know! That's Nancy Cromer, all right! S2 DANNY FULK Mischievous Seldom does one find a boy so full of capers and yet so intellectual as Danny Fulk. Since he entered school, he has been popular because of his achievements in many fields. Having been junior and Senior Class President, Danny has guided the class su c c e ss fully through these last two years to help make them mem- orable ones. In regards to scholarship, Danny has made outstanding grades and was chosen as one of the junior Marshals last ye ar. It could be said that laughter always follows D e a r D a n fMr. Stroupe's nickname for himj. His witty ways, his genuine smile, his mis- chievousness, and his way of treating everyone as an equal make everyone like him. Who's SANDRA FLYNT Flyntstone Of the people we know there are many whom we like, several whom we respect, and some Q whom we appreciate. Because her presence is vital to the life of our school, Sandra is one of these fel. She is represen- tative of the standards and aims we associate with our school and the goals we pattern for our lives. To know her is a privilege, to work with her is a richrexperience because in whatever she attempts she works in the effort to the height of her ability. As President of the Anchor Club, she has guided its members in projects necessary to the well-being of the school. Her diverse talents in music, art, and dramatics have been given Lmselfishly to benefit Mineral Springs. lt is for this leadership and distinction in service that each one of us is individually proud and grateful to have Sandra in his school. Who BYRON HENLEY A Big Third Voted by the Senior Class into Who's Who, Byron Henley is a 170-pound ace on the gridiron and a 6'1 deadeye on the basketball court. Being also on the baseball team, this rugged athlete is so skilled at the diamond that he often is referred to as the batting champion. The senior football players voted him Most Valuable Football Player. His record during the past season confirms the faith attributed him. A team Tri -Captain of basketball, he is known as one of The Big Three. It is an indis- putable fact that he has helped lead our Bulldogs through many decisive victories. ,ff BUTCH JOHNSON A Regular joe Lights are low, the stage is set, and suddenly music fills the air. It's a lark! It's a twister! No! It's Butch johnson crooning to the music of the Monarchs! For whether it's singing, dancing, acting, or participating in sports, you can be sure he'll try a hand at it-and give it his all. Considered a re gular fellow here at Mineral Springs, Butch is President of the Hi-Y Club, a service organization whose purpose and meaning in the school he has helped to advance. Through his many activities, his service has proved to be of vital im- portance to the school. RICHARD LANCASTER A Popular Favorite FOOTLIGI-IT ffrom stagep: This is a high school. I work here. I'm a footlight. Ihave shone my brilliant light on many student actors throughout the years. I remember most vividly one short, white-haired man fa Dr. Chausable, I believe, who kept an audience in stitches with his sermon on the significance of 'manna in the wi1derness.' This footlight could have been talking about one actor only-Ri c h a r d L a n c a s t e r. Dramatics interests him very much and he participates in many assemblies, plays, and recitations. Richard had one of the leading parts in last year's play, The Importance of Being Earnest. His acting ability has also led him to participate in summer stock at Tanglewood The atre. But dramatics is not the only field in which Richard excels. A member of the cross- country team in track, his spirit of sportsmanship has made him a necessary m e mb e r. In personality, too, R i ch a rd is above par. His warm, friendly m a nn e r towards everyone makes him a popular favorite on campus. Who's CONNIE KAPP . . . The Larger Part of School Spirit. Have you ever noticed a burst of spirit plunging head-on into you when trying to make your Way down the halls? More than likely it's our shortest member in the Senior Class,Connie Kapp.As a cheerleader she is a very active booster and grand participant of school spirit. It may be said that although she is quite small in size she is tre- mendous in volume. Connie very definitely makes up the larger part of school spirit. Who CALVIN LAWSON Another Big Third Up in the air, Calvin! screamed the fans during a bas- ketball game and, sure enough, the lofty star retrieved the jump ball. This action became one of the familiar scenes around Mineral Springs this year as the Bulldogs romped through many victories, sparked by the high scoring of Calvin Lawson. In many ways, the 6'5 Tri- Captain has sparked his team, not only with his above- avera g e height, but also with his deft shooting and rebound ability. An athlete in every respect, Calvin has certainly boosted school spirit. FRED LEWIS C1umsy Fred Lewis is a boy who is active in everything. He has prove d his leadership ability in both class activities and in extra-curricular activities. As Vice-President of the Senior Class, Fred has devoted his services toward making our last year at Mineral Springs a suc- cessful one. He is also President of the College Club, Chaplain of the Key Club, and Vice-President of the National Honor Society. Because of his commendable academic record, Fred was last year chosen to serve as a junior Marshal. Being quite talented, Fred excels in dramatics, singing, playing of the piano and guitar, and dancing. As one of the main characters in last year's junior-Senior Play, Fred was one of the actors whose performances helped to make the play a success. At times, his well-known dignity is unmasked, for this boy has a knack for making people think he'll crash into them bodily. But just as soon as one thinks there will be a collision, Fred regains his poise and strolls down the hall to the bewilderment of his would-be victim. Because of his versatility, Fred is a deserving selection for Who's Who. . 0- ' U ff DAVID MATLOCK An Excellent Example A name often seen on the honor roll and mentioned during conversation in which the most accomplished academic students are discussed, David is an excellent example for yotmger students to follow. Because of his sincerity and dependability, David is well thought of by student and teacher alike. A true leader, David is President of the Key Club, of the Campus Book Club, of the National Honor Society, and of his homeroom. I-Iis scholarship is of such caliber that he was last year Chief junior Marshal, and this year was inducted into the National Honor Society. With all his schoolwork and extra-curricular activities, he also finds time to hold a part-time job at a local theatre as usher and to take part in our school's intramural sports program. Who's BECKY LINDSAY Her smile speaks a universal language. Charm is the most precious of gifts a- girl can possess. For it is pricelessg it cannot be bought. It is only attained through a selfless interest in the World outside oneself. Touching deeply all it is near, this rarest of gifts makes us feel a special glow. Certainly Becky Lindsay is one among few who radiate this charm. How many of us, in the warmth of her smile or in the merriment of her laughter, have felt this special glow? As a member of the Anchor Club and as a leader in the Youth for Christ Club, her services have proved to be invaluable. In tribute, her fellow members of the Y. F.C. this year elected her their Christmas Queen. Becky was again honored this winter by being on the winter Homecoming Court. Because she represents the ideal girl, the LARENIM staff this year chose her as Miss LARENIM. Who ED PINSON The Shy One jump up and shout, screamed the twisting Twist fan down at the Carolina Theatre one night. This is just one of the many sayings quoted from our laughter-spreading boy, Ed Pinson. For many students can tell you that Ed is the boy who has an answer for any question. I-le is the only boy ever heard of who can explain why snow will melt on one side of a telephone pole and not melt on the other side. Yes, he's the one who has everyone fooled, for Ed is not so shy as most people think. This boy really becomes himself when around the gang. However, Ed is not always clowning. There are many things in which he shows serious interest. A member of the football team for four years, he has contributed much with his hustling energy. JIM Ricci Rico Known around Mineral Springs as Rico, seen Twisting the Night Away at sock hops, and being a favorite on the football team, is jim Ricci. Although he's little, jim is very muscular and sturdy. A Tri- Captain of the football team, he helped the Bulldogs fight for victory at his position as guard. jim has led our class as President while we were Sophomores, and as class Vice -President in our junior year when first we became upper classmen. Liked by all his classmates, jim is often thought of as the boy with the accent. A Rhode Islander until he came to Mineral Springs, he adapted to our way of life from the very beginning. To see his winning smile and to hear his friendly greeting for all is a privilege. For jim could be referred to as one of the friendliest boys at Mineral Springs. CLIFF VENABLE An Admirable Fellow Cliff is liked by all for his friendliness toward every- one. His clever, friendly personality has brought him many honors such as his election as Boy of the Month, Valentine King, and Anchor Club Admiral. As a member of the Key Club for the past two years, his leadership has been strongly felt, especially this year through his service as Treasurer of the club. Students in other schools are kept up-to-date with events at Mineral Springs through Cliff's work as a teenage cor- respondent for the Iournal-Sentinel. A natural asset to the life of the school, Cliff's friendliness and service will be remembered long after our school days have been finished. Who's BRENDA SPARKS . . . right in style. . . Who's the girl with the golden curls Who's popular with the boys and girls? In commercial classes she really Sparks By making higher-than-average marks. In service, too, she's right in style Giving her talents to things worthwhile- Anchor Club, LARENIM, Quill and Scroll. If you haven't guessed it now, you're too droll. Brenda Sparks stands as a representative of high scholas- tic achievement, having been chosen in her Junior year as a Marshal, and in her Senior year as a member of the National Honor Society. Her journalistic talents have most recently been devoted to serving as Editor-in-Chief of the LARENIM and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Quill and Scroll, an honorary journalism society. Who CI-IERYL WATTS Our Electrifying Watts Seldom does the girl pretty enough to be chosen Sweet- heart of the I-Ii-Y make the honor roll with amazing frequency also. However, beauty and brains are the rare combination in possession of our own Cheryl Watts. A cheerleader for the past three years, her enthusiastic leadership as a Co-Chief this year has brought to our athletic teams some of t.he finest support they have known. In addition to this extra-curricular activity, Cheryl devotes part of her free time to service as Secre- tary of the Senior Class and as President of the Girls' Monogram Club. This past year she was a member of the autumn Homecoming Court and a sponsor in the winter Homecoming Court. SYLVIA WEST Delightful Who is Sylvia? What is she? That all our swains commend her? Fair, good-natured, friendly and attractive are adjec- tives which aptly describe one of the most delightful personalities at Mineral Springs, Sylvia West. For wherever people congregate, she is a welcome member with her talent for imparting warmth and laughter. Because of her Winsome beauty, Sylvia has received many rewards, Key Club Sweetheart and membership in the autumn Homecoming Court, to name a few. As a member of the cheerleading squad, she is a standout by way of her fair good looks and blithe spirit. Always personable and fun-loving, Sylvia is a welcome mem- ber of Who's Who or of any group. We chose our class colors, flower, motto, mascots, elected twenty prominent members of our class to a special lNho's Who section in the LA RENIM, dedicated our yearbook to a faculty favorite, and chose class superlatives for a special Class Day program. We've tried hard this year to make it the best, not only scholastically, but also citizenshipwise. Remembering this, we can now say, Look not mournfully into the Past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the Present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy Future, without fear, and with a manly heart.
