Airy 39 0 Walkertown 19 13 Gray 38 6 'Reidsville 40 O TOTALS 177 57 Under the guidance of Coach James Malcolm of Appalachian and Coach Julian Gib- son of Lenoir-Rhyne, the Mineral Springs Greenwaves started the 1949 football season on August 15. With ten lettermen returning, B. Tilton, Hauser, Walker, J. Tilton, Meadows, Blalock, Furches, Hinshaw, and Smoot there was a prospect of a Winning team. Bill Hinshaw and Bill Smoot were elected-co-captains of the team. The Green- waves were without the services of Howard Faust and A. C. Larrimore because of 311 ineligibility ruling. Through-out the season thc squad was plagued with injuries. Only about half of the original starting eleven was able to play at the end of the SCBSOH- With a record of two wins and six losses, the season was closed with a homecoming at the Reidsville game in which Barbara Saunders was crowned Queen of Footbflll f01' the 1949 football season.
