at 5711? Our Principal J. HUGH WHITE TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1950 Commencement is a serious time when those of you who are graduating are thinking earnestly about what you hope to accomplish in the days that lie ahead. As you formulate your plans and set up goals for yourself, I hope that you will make in your own mind a sharp distinction between real values in life and what the world calls success. Kipling, in his play If, presents a practical formula that one must follow if he is to merit being called a man. I think each senior should read that poem at commencement time and frequently throughout his life as a kind of moral check-up. Not long ago? I came across what I 'consider to bc an even finer definition of real greatness than the one presented by Kipling. It is from a book called Wind, Sand, and Stars which was written by a French aviator who is also a professional philosopher. He said, To be a man is to assume responsibilityg it is to take pride in victory won by his comrade: it is to feel, when setting one's stone, that one is contributing to the building of the world. I want to commend that definition to you as one worthy of being used as a guide throughout life. Too many of us are misled into thinking that the accumulation of great wealth or hitting the front page of a newspaper is a true measure of success. Too often, we are prone to forget that real worth is not measured by such standards. The humble citizen who lives a good life and exemplifies unselfish devotion to his family, his community, and his nation is in his way contributing as much or more to humanity as many of his more widely known contemporaries. I could leave you with no better guide for living a successful life and attaining true greatness than to urge that in your thinking and in your living you should strive to measure up to the standard set up by this philosopher. I shall follow your career with much interest. When you make good I shall be proud for you and of you. iff 26
