ZWAHLEN BRASSART J. ZWAHLEN HENDERSON JUSTICE FOOTBALL Going into the opening game of the 1952 cam- paign as defending champions of the M.B.L., the Mineral Wildcats were considered the team to beat by all other league members. Accepting this role as favorites, the Wildcats proceeded to win ten games in a row and their second consecutive league cham- pionship. Mineral scored 353 points while limiting opposition to a total of 36 points. This impressive record gained them the unique status of being the top class Bw school in the state as they ranked fifteenth in the Associated Press ratings of all the high school teams in Kansas. The Wildcats placed nine varsity members on the M.B.L. All Star team and were further honored when Billy Norris, their outstanding leader and team co-captain, was chosen as a tackle on the All State second team. Art Batalia, halfback and co- captain, was named, along with Norris, on the S.E. K. district All Star Team. There will be several new faces gracing the grid- iron next year due to the fact that 12 seniors will be missing from the lineup. The twelve are: Walter Thomas, Billy Norris, Lloyd Henderson, Emery Zwahlen, John Grant, John Justice, Loren Smith, Dale Tarter, Ralph Bailey, James Young, Art Bata- lia, and Harold Hayden. This was Coach John Hartman's third year at Mineral, and since he has been here he has done a very fine job. He started with a green team and won the championship his second and third years. We are looking forward to being one of the leaders for many years to come. The underclassmen contributed greatly to this year's 39 man squad. Among them were such out- standing boys as Ronald Helms, Alex Brassart, .lerrol Zwahlen, Merle Velia, Roger Bennett, Charles Yagher, and Ned Thayer. These boys did a very fine job in everyone's estimation. Along with those boys were all the other younger fellows, who were out every day helping out at the same time developing in ability, knowledge of football. Their continued hard work and strife will make them Mineralis stars of the future. All of these things: good coaching, determination, co-operation, and teamwork go hand in hand in producing the victories you will see or hear about in the seasons to come.
