Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1987 volume:

The world goes up and the world goes down, And the sunshine follows the rain; And yesterday’s sneer and yesterday’s frown Can never come over again. Ovid Yes, we have changed, our identities have been shaped by the experiences of our youth. and even though we are the same person, We are most affected by everyday occurrences such as the reassuring smile of a friend, or the encouraging support of adults whose wisdom we respect. It is strengthened whether we make an important contribution to a group or accomplish something on our own. It is with this new confidence that we go forth determined to make changes. MARJORIE KUBAT High School Administration MR. PAUL FLANZER- Principal MR. MICHAEL TERC- Assistant Principal The process of change is perhaps the most awe- some puzzle in our universe. By what mysterious sig- nal do the leaves change colors, the animals ex- change their coatings and the birds and fish migrate? Perhaps the very enormity of this subject has led the editors of Signet to select CHANGE as their theme for this yearbook. Consider the dramatic changes in your own phys- ical, social and emotional development during the last four years. In September when you saw the freshmen enter our building, did you ask yourself Was I like that?” Yes, you probably were. You've changed. The big question is what great changes in your life lie ahead? You are aware that the most challenging part is yet to come. It has been said that experience is the hardest kind of teacher. It gives you the test first and the lesson afterwards. Like death and taxes, you can depend that change will take place. To what extent can you prepare for it? The first factor is your adaptability. You must prepare yourself psychologically to cope with the changes in your life and in society in general. You hardly want to be the one who pleads Stop the world, I want to get off.” The second factor is your marketability in a tough world that operates on the law of supply and demand. If you have a skill that is in demand, the world will beat a path to your door. Without adequate education and training, you are just another face in a line of expendables. My message to you is to prepare for change in every way you can. Then regard it as the exciting challenge that it is. In the current vernacular, “Go for it!.” Paul Flanzer MS. After a few weeks, we begin to realize that we also belong. Our feelings unfold, making way for confi- dence and a sense of security. Now firmly established at MHS, we notice that we could have done much more and in our sophomore year, we will strive to achieve these goals As sophomores, we have already adapted to the once strange atmosphere. While we learn and grow, our self-confi- dence leads us to participate in the many activities offered at Mineola. At the close of the year, we can look forward with much anticipation to becoming Juniors. With our junior year comes many responsibilities, and it is considered to be the most important time of high school. During these two semesters, spirit and pride in our school are developed. Busy working and preparing for the future, we aim for the goals we have set for ourselves from the beginning. Our underclassmen years provide us with a sense of inde- pendence and enthusiasm towards our future. The memories of MHS along with the people and experiences we have en- countered are a part of life that we can always look back on with a smile. 41 Freshmen Porzia Caputi. President The Freshmen Class was am- bitious and very productive during its first year at Mineola High School. A busy schedule full of various fund-raisers and activities was the reason for their success. Some of the events they sponsored were a Chocolate Turkey Sale for Thanksgiving and a Christmas Ornament Sale. A main goal of the Class of 1990 was to pro- mote spirit, and they achieved this by selling confetti and noisemakers at sporting events. The Freshmen also or- ganized a car wash and held a successful Spaghetti Dinner. Diversity was certainly the word to be used to describe the range of their accomplish- ments. This energetic class looks with anticipation towards Sophomore year, which they hope will hold many more re- warding and exciting exper- iences. Christine Lopez. Secretary Connie Zogaib. Treasurer Sophomores Lisa Bordonaro. President Michele Colbert, Vice-President Nicole Darrow. Secretary The Sophomore class had an event- ful and prosperous year. Aiming to in- crease their funds, they held several candy sales and a Halloween balloon sale. Additionally, the class of ’89 sold candy canes during the Holiday season and MHS teeshirts in the spring. The annual Ring Breakfast and a unique Se- miformal Dance provided lasting memories to cherish for years to come. The Sophomores have acquired valuable experience and hope to make their last two years at MHS enjoyable. Theresa Dinh. Treasurer 48 Ms. Salamone. Advisor 1 lllliii Juniors Marc Groman, President Amee Mehta, Vice-President Rosemary Corso. Secretary 52 Ms. Zarins, Advisor The Junior Class had a very successful year due to its many fund-raisers. The members of the class began by selling chocolate santas and Christ- mas wrap during the holiday season and followed this up with a Valentine's Day Dance and flower sale. For St. Pa- trick’s Day, another flower sale helped to increase the trea- sury. As the second semester drew to a close, this enthusias- tic class held the Prom Fashion Show and gave the juniors and seniors a memorable prom at the Crest Hollow Country Club. On the whole... the progress made by the Class of '88 was extraordinary, and they hope it will continue into their senior year. Christine Bella, Treasurer Ms. Barber, Advisor SENIORS Valedictorian Reflecting on our lives now, we can see that within each of us there lies faint memories and images of a person that we once were. Casting our eyes ahead, we see that the future holds in front of us an individual who we shall soon become. We have all borne witness as to how both ourselves and the people around us have changed through the course of time. From our years at the high school we know that all things must come to pass. And pass they will, for friendships will wither, dreams will shatter, and the present will become all but a memory. We will all leave and follow a different path through the walks of life, but we shall never forget one another. My friends, reminisce and remember how we have changed together. May the very best that life has to offer be yours. Amit Kapadia Salutatorian Life is full of changes. The people and circum- stances which surround us, as well as we our- selves, are constantly changing. This is especially true of our high school years. We came in as freshmen, unsure of ourselves and a bit nervous about starting in a new school. As time passed, we gained confidence from our exper- iences, and the school somehow seemed smaller and less intimidating. We felt more comfortable in our surroundings, and the school days became less like work and more enjoyable. As we leave high school, our lives will again un- dergo a tremendous change. For years we have gone to school in the same area and with the same people, but next year will be different. We will be meeting new people and sharing new experiences. We may never see some of the people we graduate with again. However, we will make new friends and rise to the challenges put before us. There will always be changes occurring in our lives. Some will be for the better; others will not. Either way, we will learn to accept the changes and make the most of our lives. I wish you all much success and happiness in the future. Good Luck. The Signet ’87 staff admires the achievements of the Top 25 and wishes all of them success and happiness in the future. 59 Spirit and Originality - these are the qualities which have been an important part of all that the Class of '87 has accomplished. From holding the first Sophomore Ring Breakfast to sponsoring the Junior- Senior Prom at Malibu to refurbishing the Senior Lounge, we have continually presented new and successful ideas to the school. Our participation in Girls’ Week, victorious or not, gave us a chance to exhibit our class enthusiasm and loyalty. In fact, there wasn't one activity or club at MHS that was not enhanced by the involvement of a member of our class. We also launched numerous profitable fun- draisers which will benefit those who follow us and remind them of our class’ dedication. As we leave MHS, we realize that many things in our lives will inevitably change, just as they have since our first day of high school. We will now go on to face new challenges, meet new people, and succeed in new endeavors. We will depart with the hope that our spirit and originality will continue to be positive influences in our lives, and we will always hold a special place in our hearts for the memories of our years at MHS. Led by tri-captains JoEllen DeThomasis, Jennifer Noble and Laura Juliano, the Mustangs went to the County Quarter-Finals, where they suffered a disap- pointing loss to Island Trees. Many players were singled out for their outstanding performances throughout the season. Jennifer Noble was named to the All-County team, while Laura Juliano and Donna Bennett received All-League honors. All-Division awards went to Janet Resch and Stacey DeThomasis. Although the Mustangs lost some key offensive players, much talent still remained to carry on the tradition of determination and fine play. The team will rely on its consistent pitching and strong defense to hopefully bring it another successful season. 179 Donna Bennett turns the double play. Jennifer Noble aggressivley charges a bunt. Patti Santosus winds up for the next pitch. Jennifer Lynch sets up for the throw to first. Carole Sommer carefully fields a ground ball. Lacrosse BACK ROW: N. Thornton, Mr. Miller-Assistant Coach, C. FRONT ROW: S. Grimm, J. Biagioli, B. Peck. T. Loehle, S. Rohlfing. The 1986 Varsity Lacrosse Team, under the guidance of Head Coach Bob Young and Assistant Coach Mark Miller, finished the season with a record of 10 wins and 9 losses. Offensively, the Mustangs were led by junior Devin Beresheim and sophomore Darren Lowe, who were named to the All-Conference and All-League teams respectively. Chris Andreacchi, a junior who also received All-League honors, and third year goalie Rich Flynn were tremendous assets to the defense. The positive attitude of the players led them to qualify for the County Playoffs, where they were defeated in the first round by Seaford H.S. With all but four players returning to the Mineola squad in '87, Coach Young hopes to have an excellent season. Mike Pasqualina gains possession of a ground ball. Darren Lowe finds the open man. Tom Loehle wrestles an opponent for the ball. Steve Rohlfing makes an aggressive move toward the cage. Chris Andreacchi prevents his man from scoring. 181 Cheerleaders The MHS Cheerleaders added spirit and enthusiasm to various Mustang activities through- out the 1986-87 school year. Both the JV and Varsity squads attended camp this summer to improve their overall skills and to learn new cheers and chants. The girls demonstrated their newly acquired techniques at football and basketball games as well as at Pep Rallies. Home- coming '86, and Be Proud Night. The Cheerleaders provided the fans with entertainment and also helped to strengthen school pride. Under the leadership of Varsity captain Melissa Corrao and advisor Mrs. Earnhart, the group participated in the Nassau County Cheerleading Competition for the first time in three years. They spent long hours practicing to perfect their demanding routines for this perfor- mance, and the Cheerleaders evidenced their dedication and pride to all present. Whether they were decorating the halls of our school or cheering in the rain at a football game, the girls displayed their never ending spirit throughout this past year. The ’86-’87 Cheerleaders are to be commended for their vitality and devotion to MHS. 184 P. Higgins. L. Tedone J. Walter. K. Mackin M. Corrao- Captain 135 J. Lagerman. M. O'Boyle J. Kennedy. J. Resch Girls’ Week The coming of Spring brings with it the anx- ious anticipation of Girls' Week. This annual interclass competition allows the students to demonstrate their spirit and enthusiasm. Each grade chooses a theme, and through dances, posters, floats, songs, and cheers, the girls ex- hibit their talent and creative abilities. They are also judged on their costumes, sportsmanship, and athletic capabilities. Girls’ Week '86 was full of animated competi- tion. The Frosh in Disneyland showed much pride and are sure to be back in’87 with added confidence. The Sophs Undercover captured first place in the float competition, while the Summertime Seniors won cheering. The sister classes also tied for first place in the sports category. The Royal Juniors’ creativity and spirit enabled them to be victorious in the post- er, costume, and sportsmanship categories, while they danced and sang their way to tri- umph in entrance, dance, and song. Their over- all performance established them as the Girls' Week champs for the second consecutive year. The Class of '87 will always remember the fun and excitement of Girls’ Week. As Frosh in the Fifties, they first experienced the pageant- ry of the competition. The Sophs on Call made use of the knowledge they gained from the previous year to surprise everyone by winning Girls' Week. In '86 the Royal Juniors came back strongly to capture the title once again. As seniors, the girls hope to continue the pride, spirit, and enthusiasm of the Class of 1987 and maintain the tradition of victory. 186 •JHl ADVERTISING “The roots of education are ‘difficult’, but the fruit is sweet.” - Aristotle CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1987 THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT CONGRATULATIONS DIANA and THE CLASS OF ’87 THOMAS D. Several key people are to be thanked for their patience and helpfulness. Most importantly we are grateful to Miss Higgins, a wise taskmaster who every night taught youthful yearbook editors about responsibility superbly. Her understanding and dedication were tested time after time, but she stuck with us through the end. We also thank Mr. Chet Smiley, our American Yearbook Representa- tive, and we appreciate the time he spent in aiding our project. Ms. Eliza Fisher and the Signet Business Staff, who handled the responsibility of financing our yearbook, also deserve much praise. We extend our sincere thanks to Dave Greenberg and Bob Biello, of Greenberg-Biello Studios for supplying our photographic needs. The advertisers, boosters, and all other contributors to the produc- tion of Signet '87. Finally, we the editors, hope that Signet '87 will serve as a continu- ous and lasting reminder of the friends and experiences that were so much a part of your years spent at MHS.
