Consider the vast amount of knowl- edge we now have about genetics and heredi- tary medicine because a young English natural- ist, Charles Darwin, took a hazardous trip around the South American coast in a small sailing vessel in 1831. While others merely looked at the strange scenery, he was curious enough to notice dif- ferences between the species of animals and plants in the islands and on the continent itself. His observations eventually formed the basis of a theory that was to provoke the greatest controversy of the century ... evolution. It also led to many vital scientific and medical advances. In selecting CURIOSITY as its theme, the edi- tors of Signet focused on the basic quality that stimulates learning. Most of your future educa- tion really consists of satisfying your own curi- osity. Those of you who continue to be inter- ested in what has happened in the past and what is occurring now are the people who will influence tomorrow. They are the informed — the learned. I wish you every success in your future pur- suits with the added wish that you stay curious to the world around you. Paul Flanzer MR. PAUL FLANZER- Principal MR. With wonder and excitement we regard our new environment, teachers, and classes. It is a year of social and academic adapting. When we return in the fall as sophomores, we are well acquainted with both the high school and our fellow students. We become more involved, showing our MHS spirit by joining various clubs and sports that hold our interests. With our junior year come further academic respon- sibilities as we begin to prepare for college. Our par- ents and teachers guide us towards setting new goals for our futures. Our underclassmen years have provided us with many happy experiences and friendships. From our classes and involvement in extracurricular activities we have sharpened the skills and talents that will enable us to fulfill our dreams and aspirations. I £ i J 43 Freshmen Michele Colbert. Vice-President Lauren Swensen. Secretary The Freshmen approached their first year at MHS with spirit and determination. After some serious campaigning and imaginative posters, their new class officers immediately be- gan their plans for the year. Numerous endeavors to estab- lish their treasury proved to be successful. As the year pro- gressed, the Freshmen adapt- ed quite well to their new re- sponsibilities and environment. They look forward to many more challenges in their future years at MHS. Michele Barry. Treasurer 46 Miss Salamone. Advisor A i Sophomores Marc Groman. President Linda Manning, Vice-President Marietta Schiappa, Secretary Amee Mehta, Treasurer The Class of '88 approached this year with spirit and individuality. The Sophomores tried out new fund-raisers such as a Valentine’s Day Dance and a stationery sale. Flower sales for both St. Patrick's Day and Girls’ Week proved to be very profitable for them. They also had two very productive candy sales. The Sophomore Class man- aged to enlarge its treasury and at the same time had a fun year. The Class of ’88 looks forward to its very important junior year and hopes to meet continued success. so Mrs. Zarins, Advisor «MEQU Juniors Laurayne Teutschman, President Jacquie Bordonaro. Vice-President Kelly Mackin, Secretary This year the Juniors were en- thusiastic fund-raisers who con- centrated their efforts on making the 1986 Prom a memorable event. The year began with a very successful flower sale for Home- coming and continued with various candy sales in order to reach this goal. The class also organized a magazine sale where subscriptions for many popular magazines were sold. A spring fashion show further helped to increase their treasury and gave many girls ideas about what to wear to the Prom. All in all, the Class of ’87 had a very produc- tive year in fulfilling their goals while showing school spirit and striving to be different. They look forward to being seniors and they envision another fun and prosper- ous year. Deborah Schnabel, Treasurer 54 Mr. Carboine, Advisor Miss Higgins, Advisor 55 Valedictorian Curiosity is defined as a desire to learn or know, especially about something rare and novel. As we look back on our lives, these past years have been filled with experiences that have helped to mold each of us into unique individuals. As children, we were willing to risk punishment, and with audacity, probed to find out more about life. In school, we sought to learn more about ourselves through the courses we took, the activities we joined, and most importantly, through our family and friends. High school is a tremendous accomplishment. In- deed, it is a very important milestone as we transcend from the familiar world in which we grew up to another world which we will someday command. My fellow classmates, I wish you all health, happi- ness, success, and good fortune. Strive to surpass your limits; I know you will someday reach your goal. My best and most sincere wishes. Yi-Shin Lai Salutatorian Curiosity has been the single dominating force that all of us at MHS share. It has led us to develop new ideas that at first sounded foreign. It has allowed us to participate in various activities and organizations based on personal interests. Even the friendships we now value have been based on an initial curiosity and penchant towards that individual’s personality. It is also through curiosity that we realize our dreams and aspirations. Our high school years have been spent doubting, questioning, and searching for our yet undefined goals. This process reflects our natural inquisitiveness, for it is the curiosity within each of us that doubts, ques- tions, and searches. It is this same curiosity that will continue to drive us toward our full potential. May you all reach this potential and be happy. 60 Maria-Louise Barilla Top 25 1. Yi-Shin Lai 2. Signet ’86 commends these individuals for their achievements and wishes them continued success in the years to come. 61 Karen Manning, President Joseph Girardi, Vice-President The Class of ’86 has experienced special moments in the past four years. The great times which have been shared among our fellow classmates will all fade into memory, but our high school friendships will always live on forever in our hearts. In this short period of time we have each grown individually as well as developed a mutual feeling of respect towards one another. Our unity, undying spirit, and ability to be ourselves have especially made this class unique. Strong participation in clubs, special events, and athletic teams has shown our true loyalty to MHS. Our class has been energetic in our efforts to make these four years the best possible. Four years ago we faced high school with apprehension and curiosity, but through our personal growth we leave with a feeling of pride and accomplishment. As we graduate, we are faced with new people and situations, yet those who shared our past will always share a part of us. When reaching for goals in the future, we will all remember our time at Mineola as one of great value. I will always keep a special place in my heart for MHS. The final record of 4 wins and 4 losses does not fully show how hard the team fought or how well they played. Led by Coach Weidlein, Coach Miller, and Coach Young, along with tri-captains, Andrew Cunningham, Scott Scesney, and Pete Winter, the team worked hard for a very challenging season. The most spirited game was against Cold Spring Harbor in which Mineola reigned victorious. An added attraction was that it was televised by Cablevision as High School Football Game of the Week. Outstanding players this year were defensive tackle John Entenmann and line backer Pete Winter. Excel- lent performances throughout the season by Scott Scesney, Andrew Cunningham and Mike McDonald allowed them to be selected to participate in the Nassau County All-Star Game. Additionally, Mike McDonald was awarded All-County Honors for his talent at the tailback position. The most memorable experience of the year was the team's trip to Puerto Rico where the Mineola Mustangs defeated the Antilles Pirates. Everyone who went enjoyed exciting and competitive football, sun, food and most of all friendships that evolved. They strove to up- grade attendance at athletic events with their undying spirit and dedica- tion. Under the direction of Advisor Mrs. Carol Earnhart, Varsity Captain Melissa Corrao and Junior Varsity Cap- tain Margaret Vallone, the girls prac- ticed hard and performed from Sep- tember to February. Homecoming proved to be a time for Cheerleaders to show their vitality not only by cheer- ing and building a float but also by par- ticipating in the Homecoming Parade. The Varsity Cheerleaders cited their most memorable experience to be their thrilling trip to Puerto Rico with the football team. This season was a fun-filled and energetic one for all. BACK ROW: S. Corrao- Captain, Mrs. Earnhart- Advisor Girls’ Week Girls’ Week, one of the most anticipated events of the school year, is an interclass com- petition involving creativity, excitement, and sportsmanship. Each class chooses a theme and prepares costumes, floats, dances, and posters based on it. The girls' great talent is also put to use in cheering, song writing, and participating in athletic events. Competition was tight in ‘85. The Seniors in Space dominated the floor in cheering, song, and sports. Last year, the Frosh were Rockin’ the Cradle and became the winners of the float category. With only one year of experience, the Sophs On Call showed their imaginative chore- ography, artistic abilities, and sportsmanship to all of Mineola as they captured the title of Champions of Girls’ Week 1985. The graduates of '86 have shown much en- thusiasm in Girls’ Week through the years. As freshmen, we explored Fantasy Land. As soph- omores, we entered the sports world. As ju- niors, we Saluted America with a spirited tri- bute to the Armed Forces to take the dance title. The participants this year hope to be- come victorious in their last performance on the Girls’ Week floor. 182 mueol fmiwwri w- q a os h w w fe a GREENBERG - BIELLO STUDIO Official Yearbook Photographers Also available for: • Weddings • Special Occasions • Family Group Portraits 192 31 Newtown Road • Plainview, New York 11803 • (516) 454-8011 This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal.” -William Penn BEST WISHES from THE KEY CLUB Mr. Robert M. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. -Anonymous THE STUDENT ORGANIZATION Catherine McEnroe - President Laura Juliano- Vice-President Constantine Malaxos- Treasurer Maria D’Agostino- Secretary Monica Toritto- Secretary James Lynch- Representative to the Board of Education Mary Noecker- Representative to the Board of Education Dr. Strati Demertzis- Advisor 219 May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come true May you always do for others And let others do for you May you build a ladder to the stars And climb every road And may you stay Forever Young May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth And see the light surrounding you May you always be courageous Stand up right and be strong And may you stay Forever Young May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation When the winds are changing shift May your heart always be joyful May your song always be sung And may you stay Forever Young Stay, Forever Young -Bob Dylan THE CLASS OF 1986 President- Karen Manning Vice-President- Joseph Girardi Secretary- Veronica Carroll Treasurer- Christine Pirone Advisor- Ms. Valerie Arnone Advisor- Mr. Anthony Angelo 225 THE VIDEO CONNECTION The Store of the 21st Century” 310 Hillside Avenue Williston Park, New York 11596 (516) 294-6420 ROME II NAIL DESIGNS COVELL HARDWARE SUPPLY CORP.
