DAVID CHURCH- Director of Secondary Education While we never read him in an English class, the most widely read American author of the late 19th century was a New Englander named Horatio Alger. He wrote over a hundred dime novels, which basically had the same theme - work hard and you will persevere. This is a subject which would be timely in any era. The person who sets his sights on a goal and pursues it with vigor has the best chance to succeed. In the last century the famous fi- nancier, Andrew Carnegie, was a model for the struggling young worker who dreamed of a rags to riches” destiny for himself. For us today perseverance” is the theme which your Signet editors selected because it is so appro- priate to the relentless competition of our highly technological society. Achieving success in school and acquiring a promising career require constancy of pur- pose. Horatio Alger would have said, “God helps those who help themselves.” That's per- severance! The environment was new and different, but the exploration of it was a memorable experience for all of us. By the time we became sophomores, our anxieties about the school were gone. We grew in maturity as a result of our new responsibilities in the school groups and activities of which we became members. As juniors, we were now well acquainted with the school and its surroundings. Thoughts of furthering our education entered our minds, and grades became more important as we began to consider college. Our underclassmen years have allowed us to get a better understanding of ourselves. During these years, many new friendships were made which we hope will continue after graduation. 40 Freshmen Steven Olenik, President Marc Groman, Vice-President Adelina Garrido. Secretary The Freshman Class was very productive this year. Its major fund-raiser was a statio- nery sale, an innovative idea that proved to be successful. A very spirited St. Patrick’s Day carnation sale enabled the Freshmen to further increase their treasury. The Class of ’88 is already very involved, an at- tribute that should continue to be valuable during the next three years. Jennifer Polack. Treasurer Mrs. Christine Zarins, Advisor 44 45 r Sophomores Diana Gismondi, President Jacquie Bordonaro. Vice-President The class of '87 was very ac- tive this year. With the hope of increasing their treasury, the Sophomores started off the year by selling balloons at Homecoming. In addition, they held numerous candy and flow- er sales throughout the year which proved to be very suc- cessful. Another profitable function was selling time” in conjunction with the Key Club. The Sophomores have gained a new confidence and now look forward to two more informa- tive and exciting years at MHS. Kelly Mackin, Secretary Debbie Schnabel, Treasurer Mr. Carboine, Advisor 48 49 Juniors Catherine McEnroe, President Karen Manning, Vice-President Veronica Carroll, Secretary The aim of the Juniors this year was to promote class unity and spirit while enlarging their trea- sury for the prom. They were very successful in the many candy and flower sales which they planned to raise the necessary funds. On Teacher Appreciation Day, the ju- niors sold apples to be given to deserving teachers. Outside of school, they painted curbs throughout the area, and they sponsored a car wash. All of these fund-raisers proved to be a suc- cess. Overall, the Class of '86 had a very prosperous year, and the Juniors look forward to more of the same results when they are Seniors. Christine Pirone. Treasurer 52 Mr. Shepherd, Advisor Mrs. Richards, Advisor Anne Wallach. President The past four years have been very special to the class of 1985. Our class has been hard- working and spirited. We have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. The Ju- nior-Senior Prom proved to be very successful. Our numerous fund-raisers worked out to our advantage, and winning Girls’ Week as sopho- mores boosted our spirit. Four years ago, we were unsure of our values and our future. Today, we are ready to face what lies ahead with confidence and pride. Mineola High School has helped us to grow and mature into who we are today. The knowledge that we have gained and the relationships we have formed will stay with us forever. I will never forget this special time in my life and I know that there will always be a special place for MHS in all of our hearts. Anne Wallach Joseph Acosta. Vice-President Lori Stichweh. Secretary 58 Mrs. Suzanne Sabatini and Mr. Robert Jaeger. Advisors Lori DeThomasis. Treasurer 59 Valedictorian When we first entered high school, we looked at it as a long winding road filled with obstacles. There were doubts and there were fears because we did not know if we had the persistence needed to meet the expectations of ourselves and of others. Now, as we look back on the past four years, we remember the aspects of MHS that exemplified the ideal of perseverance and helped cultivate it in all of us: the people we met and the new friends we made whose strong values had a definite bearing on our own; the teachers who steadily pointed us in the right direction and who inspired us to strive for perfection within ourselves; and the activi- ties we became involved in that helped in strengthening our charac- ter and searching for our identity. We also remember the goals we set for ourselves, the challenges we faced, those that we overcame, and those that we are still striving to overcome. The determination and strong will needed to surpass any difficulties we may have encountered is inherent in all of us. This perseverance guided us through our high school years and will continue to have a great impact on our lives. Ahead of us lies a wide, yet unclear horizon. Nevertheless, perse- verance is the driving force that will push us to strive for our full potential. The goals that we set for our future will not always be easy to attain, however, our persevering effort will bring us one step closer to reaching them. I wish all of you continued success and happiness in the years to come, and I hope that you reach your highest aspirations. Connie Kostacos Salutatorian Our high school years are over and now it is time to look to the future. All those things that are peculiar to high school- trends, Sweet Sixteens. standardized tests, and brand-new driver's li- censes- will no longer be an integral part of our lives. Soon we will encounter new situations, ideas, and people, and we will be forced to reevaluate ourselves in order to deal with them. As we proceed through life, we will be faced with many chal- lenges and we will be expected to make decisions as adults. So that we can meet the demands that are made on us, we must perse- vere in all our endeavors. Tenacity will not only lead to success, but it will contribute positively to our personal development. Although graduation marks the end of one part of our lives, it is also the beginning of another. This “second chapter can be the most exciting and beneficial if we take advantage of the opportuni- ties offered to us. Themes such as perseverance and effort should become indigenous to our characters. If we always keep our goals in sight, achievement will inevitably follow. I wish everyone of you luck and prosperity in the years to come, but above all, I wish you happiness. Beth Grossman 60 Top 25 Outgoing, persevering, talented, in- tellectual, meticulous, enthusiastic- these are all characteristics of the Top 25 Seniors. Cancro NOT PICTURED: J. Posillico. The 1984 baseball team, with captains Tom Doherty and Pat DeStefano, and coach Mr. Terc, finished the season with a record of 10 wins. 9 losses, and 2 ties. These standings brought Mineola to 4th place in its division. Mineola not only had a young team, but it also played in one of the toughest divisions. A highlight for the team proved to be defeating Roslyn in the last game of the season. With inexperience working against them, the Mustangs performed very well in the county playoffs. In the first game, they beat Island Trees, 3-1, due to the powerful pitching of All-Division player Andy Lubrano. A high scoring second game saw the team beat North Shore, 14-11. In the third round of the playoffs, Mineola lost a close game to New Hyde Park. The score was 5-3. Mr. Terc has great expectations for the 1985 season with the return of All-Division players Vinnie Esposito and Bob Soffel. Mineola should also be strong at the plate because of the batting skills of Helmut Bohringer, Ed Cancro and Mike Lupinacei. Vinnie Esposito looks for the right sign. Helmut Bohringer eyes the ball. Ed Cancro waits for the pick off. 183 Andy Lubrano puts his best foot forward. Mike Lupinacei concentrates on a hit. Badminton Lynn Voltaggio- Captain Tricia Stryjewski- Captain The 1984 Girls' Badminton Team ended its season with a record of 1-11, although many of these losses were by a close margin. A match that will long be remembered by the girls is their victory over Great Neck South. Outstanding players were captains Lynn Vol- taggio and Tricia Stryjewski along with Sue Hall, Beth Swain, Debra Fink, Mary Rafferty and Barbara Peck. With only two graduating seniors, the team and Coach Spacie look for- ward to a successful season next year. 184 Debra Fink winds up for a backhand shot. Susan Hall concentrates on her serve. Mary Rafferty awaits her opponent's return. Cheerleaders Enthusiasm, dedication, spirit, and pep are terms which appropriately describe the 11 girls of our '84-'85 Varsity Cheering Squad. Under the leadership of captain Maryann Malan and advisor Mrs. Carol Earnhart, they did an outstanding job of promoting school spirit and proved themselves a definite asset to many Mustang activities. True devotion was exhibited by the Cheerleaders throughout the entire ’84-'85 season. They could always be found cheering on the Mineola football and basketball teams toward victory. Pep rallies and Homecoming also proved to be spirited events because of the success of the Varsity squad. The MHS Cheerleaders with their red skirts and sweaters have become part of the Mustang tradition, Go Big Red. 186 M Malan- Captain G. Carvalho. N Prendergast S. Scerbo. P. Higgins 187 Girls’ Week Romance, happiness, and excitement are all feelings associated with spring. In MHS, a feeling of anticipation arises with the coming of Girls' Week. This event is the golden opportunity for the girls to get it all together and really put on a show. The areas of competition consist of entrance, float, cheering, dance, song, costume, poster, and newly added sports. The girls always put forth their best effort and work toward the same goal ... winning! The Frosh came in rockin' and rollin' because of the nature of their theme, FROSH IN THE FIFTIES.” As newcomers to Girls' Week, they did very well and hope to provide tougher competition in the years to come. The athletic Sophs threw a few good punches as they came in fighting with their innovative theme of SOPHS IN SPORTS. They played tough defense and didn’t intend to stop until they reached the top! Leaving us with chills and weak knees, the SPOOKY SENIORS” left an unforgettable mark on Girls' Week. Being the underdog for three years was reason enough for the Class of '84 to strive for nothing but the best. The result was victory, and the Seniors graduated as the Girls' Week Champs of 1984. While the Frosh were twistin’, the Sophs were playin', and the Seniors were scarin’, the Juniors were concentrating on cleaning up society as their theme of “JUNIORS DEAL WITH CRIME indicated. Previous years saw the '85 graduates sightseeing around the world as FROSH ON TOUR.” This excursion led them to PREDICT THE WEATHER in their sophomore year. The weathergirls took this theme to a first place position with perfect scores in dance and costume. As the sunshine faded out and the crime came in, the Class of '85 tried their handcuffs at dealing with crime. They may have lost the title of champions, but they are determined to regain it and dominate the Girls’ Week stage for one last time. 188 TEAM • CHAMPIONS PM II Ml INM We will remember our memories of MHS forever.
