SIGNET ’84 MINEOLA HIGH SCHOOL “““ g2F 1uS Harmony is the combination of individual experiences and feelings which begins as unconformity and develops into accord. i m The harmony thus created assists us in the process of setting our goals We learn more about ourselves in respect to others It is those close to us who provide us with guidance ! By expressing their various feelings 11 is harmony. DAVID CHURCH- Director of Secondary Education A dozen years from now, when most of you will reach that period of trauma on turning 30, you may retrieve this copy of SIGNET from a remote shelf. What were you like - and how did you perceive your world when you were a high school senior? In all probability, you will not remember the dishar- mony of our times. The sectarian fighting in Lebanon will have been relegated to a musty history book, and the various domestic labor disputes items in a long list of all too familiar human frailties. Will you live in a non-harmonious time when you are 30? A famous author, George Orwell, predicted a dif- ferent kind of harmony in 1984, which happens to be the title of his book. He envisioned an oppressive har- mony created by “Big Brother, an omnipotent over- seer of society, who enforced conformity and obedi- ence to authority that stifled creativity and freedom. This is not the kind of harmony that your SIGNET editors had in mind when they selected it as their theme for this issue. Fortunately, it is our unique brand of American disharmony that allows us to peaceably disagree - even with our leaders - and thus our free- doms are preserved. My hope for you, besides happiness and personal satisfaction, is that you will be able to read this in 1996 and be living in a world of harmony, achieved through peace and understanding. Best wishes for a glorious life ahead. Paul Flanzer MR. ALPHONSE RATTO- Administrative Assistant for Student Activi- ties English MS. DIANA FALK MR. JAMES SMITH- Question Mark MRS. However, we quickly adapt and are comfort- able in our once strange environment. As sophomores, we are now older and wiser. We become more intent on being involved. The unique and diversified activities that MHS has to offer provide us with many opportunities to pursue our different interests. When we return as juniors, we face a year of social and academic growth. Guidance, provided by those who care, aids us in the process of making important decisions. Our underclassmen years thus lead us through a period of development which will be the foundation upon which we build our future plans. The choices we have made and the knowledge we have acquired throughout these years will have a significant effect upon us in the years to come. Freshmen Kelly Mackin. Secretary The Freshman Class concen- trated much of its time and en- ergy on establishing a class treasury. The first school func- tion in which the freshmen par- ticipated was Homecoming. They sold red helium balloons at this event in order to pro- mote school spirit. This en- deavor proved to be a success- ful start in increasing class funds. The Class of '87 looks forward to its remaining years at MHS with enthusiasm. Debbie Schnabel. Treasurer 44 Mr. Carboine. Advisor 45 Sophomores Laura Juliano, President Catherine McEnroe, Vice-President Veronica Carroll. Secretary The Class of '86 organized many productive activities during the year. With the goal of increasing their treasury, the Sophomores conduct- ed a flower sale on Halloween in which lollipops were attached to the flowers. They also sponsored a class ring sale, an event which proved to be a most anticipated and enjoyable fundraiser for the class. The dedi- cated and enthusiastic Sophomores look forward to being successful in all their future endeavors through- out their remaining years at MHS. Christine Pirone. Treasurer 48 Mr. Shepherd. Advisor O' • t Juniors Joan Numssen. President Carol Vesely. Vice-President The Class of '85 worked diligent- ly in preparing for this year's many activities. Requiring confidence, in- telligence and participation, these tasks were enthusiastically under- taken by the Junior Class. Their en- deavors proved successful as they raised money for the prom, their most crucial responsibility. The members of the class also became involved in the surrounding com- munity with the wish of bridging the generation gap” and reaching out a helping hand to both the young and the old. The hardwork- ing Juniors look forward to an en- joyable and eventful senior year. Beth Swain. Secretary Annie Wallach. Treasurer 52 Mr. Jaeger, Advisor Miss Canellos. Advisor S3 ■to Valedictorian Through our years at MHS, we have discov- ered the meaning of harmony-feeling we are doing our best and achieving our goals in a successful and satisfying way. We have learned to live in agreement with the people and forces around us. The lessons we have learned and the activities we have participated in all contri- bute to a harmony with others. This harmony we have found shall exhibit in us a new depth of character that comes only with experience and maturity. What we have learned from our past exper- iences will help us achieve in ourselves satis- faction, and therefore, success. After all, suc- cess is measured not by others but by your own feeling of satisfaction in what you have accomplished. GOOD LUCK TO ALL! James Paulsen Salutatorian All of us, as we are leaving high school, will look back on these four years in our own way. There are some who will remember their high academic achievements and positions of lead- ership in activities and clubs. Others will see their hard work and participation and feel a sense of pride in their efforts and accomplish- ments. There are also those who did not feel a part of high school because they didn't join activities or get good grades and they will feel that high school was not a nice experience. Even though, at the moment, we can only see the most recent past, we still have a whole future to look forward to. Those of us who were high achievers will hope to continue in the same way in college. The ones who struggled through high school should try to keep up the hard work because they will be rewarded for it when they start working. Even those who wast- ed their high school years have a chance to change their attitudes and in their own way benefit themselves and society. Leaving high school will be a new beginning for all of us. Vice-President When I first heard the words, “Class of '84 , it seemed as though our high school days would last forever. Now, they are rapidly drawing to a close, only to be replaced by memories. Our class was not afraid to try new ideas and, as a result, we were very successful. With the help of our advisors Mr. Angelo and Ms. Zarins, the prom proved to be a fine product of our hard work. It was the first MHS prom to be held at the Garden City Hotel. Through numerous fundraisers, we achieved ele- gance at a cost lower than in previous years. Other classes had tried rock concerts, but it took our class to make them suc- cessful. As juniors, our class was an active part of the renewed idea of Homecoming. This year we geared our efforts toward upholding the tradition. We've become involved in many as- pects of the school by our participation in school clubs and athletic teams. We’ve learned never to say never, and with this in mind, we can face the future unafraid. We can leave MHS with a feeling of pride and accomplishment. Mr Storch- Business Advisor 139 Homecoming In its second year, the MHS Homecoming once again proved to be a very successful and fun filled event. Many hours were spent by dedicated students and faculty members preparing for this big day. A float was constructed representing the Mustangs’ effort to conquer the Westbury Dragons, the oppos- ing team. Riding on this float was our reigning queen, Crissy Russo, who later met her king, Paul Mahos. This year’s prin- cesses, Jenny Kennedy, Catherine McEnroe, and Carol Vesley, rode in a white convertible preceding the float. Many MHS clubs participated in Homecoming '83. The Marching Band played selections from this year's competition show, and the Cheerleaders livened up the crowd with their chants of victory. Some other groups which took part included the Spanish and French Clubs, Signet ’84, the National Honor Society, FBLA, and the Key Club. After the game, a reception was held in the school cafeteria, where those who attended greatly enjoyed themselves, while dancing to the music of All the President's Men and a D.J. The 1983 Homecoming proved to be a memorable experience for all involved. 141 God’s Favorite This fall, the MHS Thespian Troupe 276 presented the contemporary comedy, God’s Favorite by Neil Simon. Melissa Corrigan Girls’ Week The coming of spring brings with it one of the most eagerly awaited events of the school year, Girls' Week. This annual interclass com- petition is a combination of creativity, original- ity and spirit. The classes each choose a theme and color on which to base their events. De- signing costumes, posters and floats, writing songs and choreographing dance segments be- gin months in advance. The girls who participated with the Class of '84 started off as Frosh by the Sea. They did suprisingly well by tying for third place with the sophomores. The following year as Sophs on Safari, the participants excelled in all areas. The song, entrance, float and cheering aspects placed first. Overall, the girls displayed their enthusiasm and dedication by coming in a close second. In their junior year, they delight- ed the audience with the theme, Juniors join the Circus and once again won the song, en- trance, float and cheering aspects and added the poster category to this list. In their final year at MHS, the girls of the Class of '84 hope to do as well as they have in the past years. Girls' Week always proves to be a valuable experience and one of the most enjoyable spir- it generating events of the year. 190 • fM i Ji. i GREEN DREAM Capita!
