Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1983 volume:

Identity is the culmination of experiences, ideas, and interests which is expressed through our unique personalities. friends, families, and teachers. To the various levels of government and to some businesses as well, our identity is a Social Security number. But to our friends and loved ones, we are unique and irreplaceable. When the editors of SIGNET asked me to write this piece on identities, I first thought of Descartes' famous quotation, “I think, there- fore I am. If there is anything to be learned from four years in high school, it is that you are your own person. We may belong to many groups and identify with them, but ultimately we are responsible for our own actions. Yet we owe multiple allegiances in our com- plex existence. Each of us owes tremendous loyalty to our family, our faith, our school, community, and country. Within each of these are other groups with which we identify. In addition to our allegiance to our school, we identify ourselves by our class, by organiza- tions or teams to which we belong, and to a group of personal friends. As you go off to college or to a job, you have one identity in common; you are alumni of Min- eola High School. May this identity always be a source of pride and remembrance to which your thoughts will often return. Paul Flanzer MR. ARTHUR HERRFORTH-Assistant Principal MR. DAVID A. CORCELLA During our underclassmen years, our identi- ty develops with the aid of each situation con- fronting us. As we mature, we discover those characteristics and unique qualities which are the essence of our personality. As freshmen, we are faced with unfamiliar surroundings and feelings of confusion and anxiety. Attempting to overcome these obsta- cles is the first step toward forming our identi- ty- In our sophomore year, we gain responsibil- ity and self-assurance through involvement in various activities. Confusion turns to under- standing and anxiety to anticipation as the re- ality of our goals becomes more apparent. This newly discovered confidence aids us through- out our remaining years at MHS. Freshmen Laura Juliano, President Catherine McEnroe, Vice-President A major goal of the Freshmen Class was to make its initial year at MHS both enjoyable and eventful. This was accomplished at the same time that the class treasury was increased by attempting to involve all freshmen in the selling of candy and ornaments for the holiday sea- son. The energetic members of the Class of '86 look forward to a re- warding and exciting sophomore year. Cathy Dimakos. Secretary Christine Pirone, Treasurer Mr. Roy Shepherd. Advisor 46 Sophomores Joan Numssen, President Connie Kostacos, Vice-President The ambitious Sophomores spent the year sponsoring many diverse activities. These included the selling of candy and carnations at the Fall Pep Rally. The Class of '85 also orga- nized a barbecue and flea market. In order to achieve their main goal of increasing school spirit, they held a dance during which school rings were distributed. The careful plan- ning and enthusiasm already evi- denced by the members of the Class of '85 should continue to prove beneficial to them throughout their remaining years at MHS. Beth Swain, Secretary Cathy Swain, Treasurer 48 Mr. Robert Jaeger, Advisor Ms. Rosemary Sinisgalli. Advisor 49 In our junior year, we focus our attention on choosing the future direction of our lives. We accept the guidance of those whom we respect, and we struggle through the process of making important decisions. We are then provided with a new aware- ness of our goals and aspirations. Throughout our underclassmen years, our identi- ty is altered. With the aid of our mistakes and achievements, we mature and change. The time which we spend as underclassmen shapes our iden- tity for the years to come. d Juniors Paul Mihalitsianos, President Barry Donohue, Vice-President The Class of '84 concentrated much of this year's efforts on pre- paring for the memorable Junior- Senior Prom. This praiseworthy event was held at the Garden City Hotel and was appreciated by all who attended. The funds for the prom were raised by the selling of banners, candy, and jewelry. A school dance was also planned to involve the student body as a whole. The Junior Class anticipates the coming of their senior year with high spirits and enthusiasm. Katie Duffy. Secretary Jeni Fierro, Treasurer Mr. Anthony Angelo, Advisor Mrs. Christine Zarins, Advisor 54 Valedictorian We have come into contact with various people, val- ues, and cultures during the past four years, and each of these has acted upon our identities. The common factor bringing us together has been Mineola High School. Our courses here have opened new doors to us as have the activities, sports, and the work exper- iences in which we have been involved. In our personal lives, there also has been change. Our joys, and sor- rows, triumphs and disappointments have all helped us to mature. Moreover, this capacity for change need not end with graduation. On the contrary, our minds must remain open throughout our lives. This is impor- tant because if we become set in our ways, new exper- iences will seem frightening, and our lives will be at a standstill. We must rather be responsive to novelty so that we may always be improving and growing. In this way, our generation will not be one which follows blind- ly. We will be experimenters, innovators, and dream- ers, thinking not of what is, but of what may be. I wish you, my classmates, health, happiness, and success in all your endeavors. Christine Schnabel Salutatorian Life consists of numerous experiences. From each of these experiences we gain new knowledge about our- selves. In the course of our high school years our identity is molded through the influence of our teachers, the sup- port of our parents, and contact with our classmates. Our teachers supplied us with the knowledge that now becomes our foundation for the future. By provid- ing an industrious environment they were able to pro- vide us with a valuable education. In this four year span we were involved in a number of activities which were pleasurable. Throughout both good and bad times our parents were always there providing us with support to keep us going. Then most important there were our friends who experienced these times with us. Together, each of us formed our own identity through our accomplishments and experiences gath- ered during our years at Mineola. I'd like to thank my teachers, my parents, and the Class of '83 for adding to my identity. I wish you happiness and success in the coming years. Barbara Berger Top 25 Leadership, energy, ambition, dedication, enthusiasm, responsibility, and success — all of these qualities were evidenced by this year's Top 25 Seniors. These versatile individuals not only maintained the highest grade point aver- ages, but they also distinguished themselves in such activities as student government, athlet- ics, dramatics, Band, Cheerleading, Signet, Rockettes, and Question Mark. Their accom- plishments have been an incentive to the re- maining members of the class to strive for their aspirations with enthusiasm and confi- dence. SIGNET '83 congratulates these talent- ed students and encourages them to continue to achieve the highest of goals. BACK ROW: A. Passariello, K. Rafferty, M. DeMatos, R. Ellis. M. Fenick. Eileen Calen 61 Dale Bryk, President Sharon Adler, Vice-President The Class of '83 has been an energetic and creative one. Most importantly, however, we’ve been unique in that we've been ourselves. Our ideas and the determination we possessed to follow through on them have benefited the school in many ways. Homecoming and the Senior Trip will long be remembered as results of the leadership and originality evidenced by our class. The precedents we have set will remain a part of MHS long after we have gone. We've come a long way since freshman year. In groups, as well as individually, we have changed and matured with each new experience. During the past four years I have watched this class grow from various separate cliques into a single, united group. This past year especially, we have generated a spirit of oneness incorporated with our individual personalities. We have developed a mutual feeling of respect for one another. This has brought about a special closeness within the class itself. One of the most important aspects of our time at Mineola has been the many friendships we have acquired. After graduation we will be faced with a new way of life. We will meet new people and encounter new situations, but we will always remember the friends we have made here, for they have become a part of us. As we go on with our lives, we must leave this part behind us. There are dreams to reach and goals to achieve, but we will always look back on our high school years and the special meaning they hold for each of us. On behalf of my fellow officers, I want to wish each of you a life filled with good times, good health, and most importantly, good friends. Kara Tedone. Secretary Mr. Zusselman. Mineola began its successful season by winning an exciting Homecoming game against Valley Stream Central by a score of 30-8. After falling to Hewlett by a very close score of 26-29 and Great Neck South 8-42, the Mustangs came on strong to win their last four games by a combined score of 110-39. These included victories over Westbury(38-12), Southside(22-8), Great Neck North(20-13) and Glen Cove(30-6). Mineola scored a total of 198 points, making it the 7th highest scoring team in Nassau County. The team’s strong offense was led by captain and fullback Ken Romano who rushed for over 1000 yards and averaged 6.2 yards a carry. He was given the honor of making All-County and was selected to play in the Kiwanis All Star game. Quarterback and All-Conference player Robert Lutz passed for over 1200 yards, which proved to be the Mustang's best in 7 years. 51% of his passes were completed for an an average of 13.1 yards per pass. Since there are many talented players on the JV, and a number of varsity players will return, Coach Herman expects the team to be greatly strengthened in the years to come. 176 Victor Crema and Terry Tucker play a zone defense. At this time, the team had a non-league record of 9-2 and had won its only league game. With two returning varsity players, Coach Schmitt looks toward attaining a .500 record by winning at least six of the remaining twelve games, and he hopes to earn a spot in the playoffs. The team was strong both offensively and defensively. It was led by the most versatile player, co- captain Cindy Dowbak, who played a swing position from forward to guard. She proved to be the high scorer, averaging 20 points per game. Other key starters included co-captain and center Lorraine Eckhardt, junior guard Lisa Peterson, and sophomores Kim Dries, playing forward, and Betty Falcone who was point guard. The girls anticipate a successful season next year since most of this enthusiastic team will be returning. Lisa Peterson gains control of a jump ball. The team opened the season with a victory against Carle Place by a score of 43-20, then they defeated Holy Trinity by a score of 34- 31. After they suffered a disappointing loss against Levittown Division, they went on to defeat Clarke by a score of 48-21. This year's squad had many talented wrestlers. Senior Jerry Coiro by taking first place in the Herricks Tournament was the only first place winner Mineola has had in ten years, and he had a record of 10-2. Senior Robert Drexler took second place in this tournament, and had a record of 9-2. The squad also received support from seniors Robert Glenn, Mike Gund, and Bryan Lynch and junior Paul Mahos who performed well against all of their opponents. Mr. Guido hoped to continue winning, and he looked for success in the divisional championships. Since many of the wrestlers are underclassmen and will be returning next year, the team should do exceptionally well. 181 Mike Gund prepares for a reversal. The 1982-83 Gymnastics team finished its season with 3 wins and 5 losses. The girls began with victories over Cold Spring Harbor and Bethpage and gained their third later in the season against Valley Stream North. Under the coaching of Ms. Messina, the team competed in four events; vault, bars, beam, and floor exercise. Each of these requires a great deal of concentration, strength, and skill. Many MHS individuals proved to be high achievers. Strong vaulters were Linda Schnitzer, Joan Numssen, and Chris Kennedy, each gaining scores of 7.0 and above for this event. Sandy Romero, Linda Schnitzer, Jenny Smith, and Diana Sarno performed well on bars with high scores of 5.1, 5.0, 4.6, and 4.7 respectively. On beam, there were many talented competitors including Desiree Petersen, Jean Grimm, Linda Schnitzer, Janet Lagerman, and Joan Numssen. In the floor exercise, Janet Lagerman gained an excellent average score of 6.9 while Diana Sarno had a 6.4 average. Other participants included Stephanie Golob, Ursula Cormack, Raffaela Vacchiano, and Ivana Rutigliano. The gymnastics team has a number of young talents whose abilities should prove profitable to the squad in the years to come. 182 CAPTAIN: D. Donatelli. Reiser, N. Clifford. F. Hsieh. M. Goldstein. NOT PICTURED: F. Ramos. M. Bedell. As Signet went to press, the Rifle team had competed in two matches. Mr. Samuels hoped to use this year in which the team entered a new league as one of rebuilding. The four returning players who did a fine job this year were captain Carlos Fernandes, co-captain Freddie Ramos, and Mike Bedell, each of whom had a shooting average of 260 points and better, and Kevin Schott. The rest of the shooters included Marty Bonventre, Chris White, Mike Goldstein, Noel Clifford, Patrick Holsgrove, Frank Hsieh, and Joe Reiser. The team put in a lot of practice time and should improve its standings next year. 184 CAPTAIN: C. Fernandes. Spring Track BACK ROW: R. Louissaint, B. Cox-captain. R. Thornton, F. Schlecht, M. Valentino, M. McGay. Mr. Malle-Coach. FRONT ROW: R. Choy, S. McDonald. B. Wei. B. Walters. R. Kolsch. T. DiCiero. The 1982 Spring Track team, under the su- pervision of Mr. Malle, accumulated 146 points during the season. Leading the team was captain Brian Cox who won 2 first place awards and 5 second place awards. He achieved a height of 9’6” in the pole vaulting event, as he took fifth place in the Conference Championships. He also had the best time in the 400 and 100 meter run. Junior Ben Wei achieved the best Mineola score in the 200 meter dash with the low time of 24.4 sec- onds. Other runners were Mike McGay who had a final time of 5:47.7 in the 1600 meter race and Robert Kolsch who ran a 2:17 in the 800 meter event. Rounding out the squad were senior Reggie Louissaint, juniors Rich Thornton and Frank Schlecht, sophomores Raymond Choy, Mark Valentino, and Tom DiCiero and freshmen Steve McDonald and Brian Walters. Since many members will be returning next year, the team will be stronger and more ex- perienced. 185 Baseball BACK ROW: J. laquinto, B. Hartman, J. Kalaboukas, T. Wright. R. Benante. B. Congro. The 1982 Baseball team, coached by Mr. Terc, compiled a league record of 9 wins and 9 losses. This placed it fifth in its division which was quite an accomplishment for a young team with few seniors. The team steadily improved throughout the Mustangs’ season. They had many high scoring games including victories over Hempstead, 17-4 and 11-2, Lynbrook, 11-1, and Great Neck South, 10-2. The Mustangs also had an outstanding finishing series against divisional champs New Hyde Park. In the final game of the season, they defeated New Hyde Park in a come from behind victory of 6-5. The successes of the team were due in part to captain and All-County player Dan O’Connor who accumulated a batting average of .446 and captain and All-Conference player Art Lubrano, a .426 batter. Other outstanding contributors included All-Division player Victor Crema and pitchers Robert Lutz and Andy Lubrano. With many remaining Varsity members and upcoming JV players, Coach Terc looks forward to a promising season in 1983. 186 i Bobby Hartman leads off the bag. Robert Lutz waits on deck. The 1982 Varsity Softball team, under the coaching of Mr. Villani, finished the season with a record of 9 wins and 9 losses which placed it second in its league. This enabled the team to make the Divisional playoffs; however, the girls were disappointed as they lost to Clarke in the first game. Throughout the season the squad averaged 11 runs per game, winning by such high scores of 23-0 over Carey, 26-5 over Great Neck South, and 23-6 over Hempstead. The team was led by the excellent batting and fielding of three All-Conference players each of whom should be noted for their fine efforts both offensively and defensively. Cindy Dowbak, a strong pitcher and outfielder, accumulated a superb batting average of .486. Linda Kubat, with a final batting average of .447 played exceptionally well at second base. Lisa Peterson, the team’s shortstop, earned an average of .416. Other outstanding members included Kathy Gallagher, Mary Beth Fenick, and Sandy Dowbak. Mr. Villani hopes for another strong squad next year in order to become the Conference Champions. 188 Lynn Baylis prepares to save a run. Cindy Dowbak winds up for her next pitch. The 1982 Varsity Lacrosse team, under the direction of Mr. Young, had a record of 5 wins and 13 losses which placed it fifth in its league. The team's first two games were victories over both Bellmore, by a score of 11-4 and Clarke, 16-7. The squad was led by captains Phil Canzoneri and Tom Scardino. All-League player Dennis Bere- sheim and seniors Tom Braun and Rob Sommer also proved to be assets to the squad. Juniors Patrick Welsh, Bill Stryjewski, Bryan Lynch and Goalie Jerry Coiro were key contributors to the defense. Other strong competitors included juniors Mike Gund and Robert Glenn and sophomore Eddie Grimm. Although the squad had a disappointing record, the players improved their skills a great deal. Many of the members also gained experience through a summer league. With most of the players returning the team is now looking forward to a winning season. 190 Dennis Schoeller blocks an opponent’s shot. The 1982 Badminton team was powered by the second doubles squad of Carol Tuzzolo and Gretchen Viehmann, who attained a record of 10-3, qualifying them for the Conference Championships. Although overpowering their opponents in the first game, they later fell to a tough Clarke team. They are also to be recog- nized as the first Mineola squad in several years to beat Roslyn, the Conference Champi- ons, twice in one season. The team finished the season with an overall record of 3-10 and placed 6th in its league. Other strong members of the team included first doubles players Linda Calvo and Betty Reiser and second singles player Christine Schnabel, each of whom missed the champion- ships by only one game. Cathy Siwinski should also be noted for her efforts in the first singles position. This year, there is only one varsity spot to be filled, and many of the returning players have been members of varsity for three years. Be- cause of this, Mr. Spacie hopes for a trium- phant season in which Mineola will reach the play-offs. 192 Cathy Siwinski prepares to dink. Christine Schnabel returns the volley. Cheerleaders The 1982-83 Varsity Cheerleaders showed an extraordinary amount of spirit this past year. Under the leadership of co-captains Pat Rufo and Kara Tedone and their new advisor Ms. Esposito, the girls worked many tiring hours in order to perfect their stunts, mounts, and cheers. The squad consisted of 14 girls who performed with proficiency at all football games, basketball games, and pep rallies. Their enthusiasm played a great part in Homecoming ’82 as they decorated Hampton Stadium, built a float, took part in the parade, and boosted both the team’s and crowd’s spirit. The Cheerleaders also devoted a great deal of time to perfecting their competition routine. They entered the Nassau County Competition at Westbury High School, where they qualified for the Long Island Championships. In order to raise money and generate school spirit, the squad sold red and white shakers. The Cheerleaders' abilities and dedication have continuously been shown at each of their performances, and they are to be commended for their success. 194 K. Tedone-Co-captain P. Rufo-Co-captain S. The Leader Corps, under the supervision of Mr. Guido, is a revived addition to the Physical Education Department. These students volun- teer or are appointed to aid during gym class. They take attendance, assist the teachers, help others develop skills, and lead the class when a teacher is absent. The Corps demonstrates both athletic ability and leadership qualities, and it deserves recog- nition for its efforts. 196 Girls’ Week Girls’ Week, one of the most anticipated events of the school year, is the interclass competition which combines creativity, origi- nality, sportsmanship, and spirit. Each class chooses a theme and a color on which to base its activities and display its talents. Preparation begins months in advance when the designing of posters, floats, and costumes is carefully begun. Much time is spent choreographing en- trance and dance, writing songs, and creating and perfecting the cheer. The girls also com- pete athletically in elimination rounds of volley- ball and basketball. The Class of ’83 dedicated much effort and enthusiasm to Girls' Week. As freshmen, we traveled down Sesame Street to Meet the Muppets, and although we came in fourth, we acquired experience necessary for competi- tion. We entered the Career World as sopho- mores and tied for third while winning cheering and placing a close second in song and dance. In our junior year, we were enhanced by the World of Magic and even though we took third place, we received a perfect score in dance, placed second in cheering, and took first place in costume with a nearly perfect score. As sen- iors, we hope to come out on top. Girls’ Week proved to be a valuable exper- ience to the spirited Class of ’83, and it will long be remembered by all who participated. 197 HTS caL t r UTTlt MKtiHKTTMi Capital Stationery The feeling ... of time rushing past so quickly- too quickly.
