— which provides us with the strength needed to make meaningful efforts. Prior to such endeavors, we are inspired and encouraged 5 our parents, our teachers, and our friends. This support increases our determination 6 7 to meet each challenge as it arises ma our unique perceptions of life and to strive for our goals. 9 The truest wisdom, in general, is a resolute determination. To run where the brave dare not go. And the world will be better for this, That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove, with his last ounce of courage, To reach the unreachable stars! The combination of vision and an ideal along with the determination to carry it out produces greatness. At the beginning of your careers, it is important that you identify some quest. If it is worthy, and you have the courage and drive to pursue it, the world may truly be better for this. I hope that your years at Mineola High School have helped you to focus on the ideals and the possible dream that will give you a life filled with happiness and personal satisfaction. MR. We began to explore new areas of interest and to combine the knowledge of past years to develop our individual skills. The unfamiliar surroundings of MHS provided us with numerous challenges, and we were able to form many friendships through our various extracurricular activities. In sophomore year, we accepted greater responsibil- ity and became more independent in our decision mak- ing. Appreciating all of the opportunities open to us, we increased our involvement in school life. 40 It was in our junior year that we began to work toward our goals. We listened to the advice of our teachers and guidance counselors as they stressed the importance of academic success. Our underclassmen years thus provided us with a new understanding of ourselves and oth- ers. The memories and friendships we acquired will be cherished for years to come. The deci- sions we made will greatly influence our senior year. 41 € Freshmen The busy schedule of the Freshman Class included a variety of fund-raising activities. The selling of Christmas bells during the holidays and candy later on in the year were evidence of the spirit of the Class of 1984. They also held car washes and key chain sales to increase the class treasury. The Freshmen look forward to three more productive and enjoyable years of high school. Pat Ockovic- President Barry Donohue- Vice-President Beth Benatti- Secretary Diana Sarno- Treasurer Sophomores Fund-raising activities were a major part of the Class of '83's year. The Sopho- more Class increased its treasury by sell- ing flowers at Christmas and Easter. Sev- eral contests involving skilled guessing and luck were also held. Later on in the year, a major highlight was the receiving of class rings. The spirited Sophomores are looking forward to many exciting and fulfilling events in the future. Liz Rainha- President 48 Mr. Domoroski- Advisor Mr. Weston- Advisor Juniors The Class of '82 had a full schedule of activities and fund-raisers during the school year. The selling of flowers on Valentine's Day and surprise treat bags at Halloween helped to brighten the holidays at Mineola. The Juniors also sold class jerseys, doughnuts, and re- freshments at various school func- tions. The profits accumulated from these activities aided in the financing of the Junior-Senior Prom held at the Re- naissance Country Club. The hard- working Juniors look forward to an en- joyable and eventful senior year. Jeanne Lee- President 52 Mrs. Davanzo- Advisor Mr. Carboine- Advisor Valedictorian Success is a personal term, a measure of the satisfaction one gets from doing something well. Probably the greatest satisfaction is that which comes from the knowledge that hard work has paid off. To this, determination is the key; it is apply- ing yourself to something which takes both time and effort and having the strength and the stamina to come back again and again until you've done what you set out to do. It is an accom- plishment peculiarly your own, the fruit of your labor, and it brings self-respect unsurpassed. In my high school experience, I've tried to meet each new challenge with a fresh mind and a strong determination and I would hope that both my class- mates and I make determination, this theme of our yearbook, the theme of our lives. Determination is the tool without which the talents of man lay waste and his potential remains unrea- lized. We, the minds of the future, in these times of growing turmoil, when apathy threatens to paralyze society, must be prepared to work most diligently so that we can make this world productive rather than destructive and will always be able to look with pride upon what we've accomplished. This is the ultimate success, and determination is the path by which we may achieve it. Sharon Kantrowitz Salutatoriam The determination to make the most of the time that we have is, to me, what it’s all about. This school and the people in it have given us many chances to grow. Aside from creating new friendships, we’ve been able to discover and expand our abilities in music, sports, art, theater, business, the languages, mechanics, liberal arts, and so much more. Most importantly, we have been able to CHOOSE and explore our prospective fields of study. Having taken advantage of these opportunities, we can now become whatever we desire, improving the world through our determination to improve ourselves. With this, I wish the BEST TO ALL OF YOU IN THE FUTURE!! Phyllis A. Doig Top 25 BACK ROW: K. Kovel. R. Banno, S. Sulsky. THIRD ROW: K. Thorn- ton, A. D'Amour. A. Macken. SECOND ROW: D. Reymann. P. Doig. FRONT ROW: S. Kantrowitz. NOT PICTURED: J. Ellis. The top 25 members of the graduating class can best be described as talented, diligent, persevering, and noteworthy. Their efforts and determination enabled them to maintain the highest grade point averages throughout their four years at MHS. In addition to their aca- demic achievements, they participated in such activities as SIGNET, the SO, Question Mark, the fine arts, athletics, and countless other organizations. SIGNET ’81 congratulates these fine students and hopes that they will continue to be successful in all their future endeavors. 1. Sharon Kantrowitz 2. Phyllis Doig 3. Douglas Reymann 4. Let us realize that although the years will divide us, our aspira- tions and our futures will be guided by the foundation that we built together. Time shall teach thee all things. We have learned to work together in seeking our ideals and our truths. We have created an excelling student body strengthened by the passing of time. I have mentioned at least five times in my various addresses to the class that these are our golden years from which we base our whole lives. Years from now, we will look back and ponder the various incidents and memories of MHS, not to mention all the little sidetracks along the way. Come next September, it will be strange not to see the same faces again. But remember that there will be great times ahead. Whatever you do, it's your freedom of choice. The MHS Band always gets an early start. Each summer, the group spends a week at Band Camp with its director, Mr. Earnhart, learning routines for the fall events. Its first performance in 1980 was the Hofstra University Marching Band Festival. Over fifty schools from Long Island participated in this three-night gala, which served as a final tune-up for the up-and-coming interscholastic competitions. After modest efforts at the Poughkeepsie and Lindenhurst events, the Band’s season climaxed with a first place finish at the Oceanside meeting. In addition, the Band performed regularly at all of the Mineola Mustang home football games by playing and marching to “The William Tell Overture, New York, New York,” and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.” Other Band activities this year included the Winter and Spring Concerts and the Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan. The continued success and enthusiasm of the Band have become a tradition and an asset to Mineola High School. Color Guard BACK ROW: J Voltaggio. S. Gistedt, L. Coleman. S. Sulsky. J. Cunneely, L. Starring in the lead roles were Liz Toritto as Sarah Brown and Chris Homer as Sky Masterson. The supporting role of Nathan Detroit was played by Chuck Rafferty, and Jeremy Green portrayed Miss Adelaide. Many hours were put into the choreographing of the production numbers. Thanks to the hard work of all involved from auditions to opening night, Guys and Dolls was a great success. 149 Thespians Mineola Thespian Troupe No. 276, under the direction of Mrs. Plaia, is part of a na- tional organization whose responsibility is to supervise theatrical activities within the school. The major concern of the Thespi- ans is to select and stage the annual Fall Production. This year's show, Plaza Suite, proved to be a highly successful perfor- mance, drawing a very large turnout. Many veteran squad members were plagued by injuries throughout the season. These injuries took speed out of the backfield and much of the coordination necessary to run the offense. In spite of such difficulties, many members turned in excellent performances. One of these players was Eddison Bramble. Although Eddison was primarily known for his excellent ball-carrying of previous seasons, this year the defense profited from his skills. He accumulated an average of 11 tackles per game. In response to his outstanding all-around play, he was named All-League, All-County, All-Long Island, and he was chosen for the Kiwanis All-Star team. The offensive line was headed by All-Leaguemen Pete Mahas and Rich Lester. Rich was also chosen to play on the Kiwanis All-Star team. Sophomore Rob Lutz filled the quarterback position nicely for the injured Matt White. Leading receivers were Ken Cox and Jeff Arndt. Jeff’s best game was that against Lynbrook, in which he made five receptions. The squad was further aided by Steve Mendyk. Steve displayed his prowess in every defensive play of the last two seasons. Other key members included John Altoonian, Scott Holliday and Mike Innella. With most of the squad graduating and very few returning lettermen, next year’s team is expected to concentrate on rebuilding its organization. 162 Kevin Aikman punts the ball down field. Mike Wright makes a crucial reception. Mineola's defense is ready for the next play. Volleyball With only two returning starters, the Girls’ Volleyball Team practiced long, hard hours to improve its bump, set, spike, and offensive game and had a victorious season. The team was led by the accurate spiking of senior Marianne Hacker and the setting of seniors Kathy Burns and Andrea Odnoha, this year's captain. These three girls were also chosen All-Division. Their excel- lent playing added to the outstanding performance of the rest of the team. Under the guidance of their coach, Ms. Messina, the girls secured the Division title with a final record of 11-1 and entered the Nassau County play-offs with great optimism. The team won the first game of the playoffs, giving them the opportu- nity to compete in the quarter-finals at Nassau Com- munity College. They were upset by a loss but played an exciting match which lasted the three game limit. They ended their season with dignity and triumph. In spite of the loss of three starting members and the inexperience of the underclassmen, Ms. Messina has great confidence in the team and is looking forward to another successful, rewarding season next year. 164 BACK ROW: K. The team was led by its strong defense. Protecting the goal was All-Countyman Scott Sasso, a junior. Scott kept the squad in many of the games with his excellent goaltending. He was responsible for one shut-out and numerous one-goal games. Outstanding support was given by senior sweeper Junior Velez, freshman fullback Paul Mendes, junior fullback Robert Sommer, and junior stopper Manny Couto. Guiding the offensive side of the team was All-Division honored Al Herrera who had the best goal scoring record on the team for the past two seasons. Joe Costa was also awarded All-Division honors for his superb offensive ability. Contributing to the scoring with their outstanding ball control were seniors Sherlund Lucke and Joe Nunes. In the first game of the play-offs, the team defeated Great Neck South 3-1. Unfortunately, Mineola was disappointed in the quarter-finals by a 4-1 loss to Roslyn, a team which eventually went on to win the Nassau County Championship. His goal for the rest of the season was to break the school record for the high hurdles and to improve his high jump. The team was also aided by Eddison Bramble’s shot putting. Eddison had placed second in the team’s division the previous year in the shot put and this year, he will add the high jump event. Underclassman sprinter Ben Wei, middle distance runner Brian Cox, and distance runner John Kalaboukas were expected to show their running skills through the season. Seniors Jeff Arndt and Matt Komorowski were looking to contribute to the team’s efforts by entering in a number of novice events. The squad was further aided by the addition of female athletes. She was also picked as All-Division player for the past two years. An- other key player, junior Barbara Jesberger, broke the school record for scoring the most points, 32, in one game. She was also the star defensive player. The remaining starting five included senior captain Kathy Burns, junior Kathy Gallagher, and junior Lisa Lorusso. As Signet went to press, the Mineola Varsity Basketbail team had achieved an overall record of 2 wins and 5 losses. The season began slowly, but with the many remaining League games, the team hoped to improve its record and perhaps to make the play-offs. After dropping its first three Non-League games, the squad came back by defeating Wheatley 68-51 and out-shooting Port Washington 63-62 in overtime. Contributing to the team's wins was its excellent performance on defense. Leading the offensive was center Burnis Johnson. In the seven games played, Burnis averaged 19 points. His shooting ability was demonstrated during the overtime victory against Port Washington in which he scored 27 points. Adding to the scores were forwards Gary Moses, Sherlund Lucke, and Craig Bates, centers Doug Sherman and Brian Hanley, and guards Tom Sheehan, Jim Lignos, and Matt Dimakos. Unfortunately, Mineola’s offense showed considerable weakness from the foul line, which explained their losses. Juniors Paul Eising, Terry Tucker, and Lawrence Walsh were all expected to turn in excellent perfor- mances. Coach Schmitt feels that with improved foul shooting and continued hard work the team can capture first place in its division. 172 Gary Moses drives inside for a basket. -r wmm Lawrence Walsh runs down court on a breakaway. Coiro. M. Gund, R. Morgan. R. Micera. FRONT ROW: R. Glenn, M. McCarey. P. Mlhalitsianos. As Signet went to press, the Mineola Wrestling team was enjoying its best record in ten years. The squad had only one Non-League match remaining, and the season included some impressive wins, such as Glen Cove (51-18), Westbury (39-19), and the tough New Hyde Park (49-16) teams. Its fine record of 10-5 was readily attributed to Coach Guido's vigorous practices. The team was fortunate in having many talented wrestlers. A leading member was Co-captain Mike Innella. Mike had a total of six pins, many of which brought the team to victory. He also achieved second place in his weight class in the Hempstead Tournament. Also at this match, sophomore Gerard Coiro placed first in his division, while senior Co-captain John Altoonian and sophomore Robert Glenn both recorded second place wins. Throughout the season, these four individuals performed extremely well against the roughest competi- tion. The squad was greatly enlivened by supporting grapplers Dan O'Connor, Kevin Moyse, Ron Velez, and Rob Drexler. Without their dedication, this year’s team would not have fared nearly as well. The squad was hoping to continue its winning momentum in the Divisional Tournament. With the loss of only a few members to graduation, next year's team should be a successful one. Rifle BACK ROW: G. Lesmeister, S. Holliday. P. Woytysiak. M. Borst. FRONT ROW: J. Woytysiak, C. Lesmeister. C. Fernandes. F. Ramos. As Signet went to press, the Rifle Team had achieved a record of 3 wins and 3 losses. With five matches remaining, the squad was looking forward to improving its record. During the first half of the season, the team showed its capabilities in a match against Manhasset. Excellent marksmanship was displayed by junior Paul Woytysiak. He was backed by the fine shooting of senior co-captains Glenn Lesmeister and Marilyn Borst. The remaining members of the team included John Woytysiak, Scott Holliday, Cliff Lesmeister, Fred Ramos, and Carlos Fernandes, who were all great assets to the squad. With the loss of only three seniors to graduation, Coach Samuels hopes to take advantage of a strong underclassman team in heading for a division title next year. 175 Bowling L. Wilczynski, K. Losnedahl. A. Bryk, J. Gallagher. D. Blakely, Ms. Rush-coach. As Signet went to press, the Girls’ Varsity Bowling Team was ready for another victorious season. The team was then in first place, undefeated after five consecutive matches, and the girls looked forward to continuing their success and acquiring the Conference III Championship. The team was led by seniors Joan Gallagher and Karen Losnedahl with outstanding averages of 156 and 154, respectively. The girls continued to play well and score high point records. Rounding off the team were senior Andrea Bryk, junior Lisa Wilczynski, and a new member, sophomore Debbie Blakely. With the loss of only three seniors, Ms. Rush, the girls' coach, was looking forward to drafting new mem- bers and rebuilding the championship team. 176 Bowling K. Schmidt. M. Simon. Mr. Carboine- Coach. J. Arndt- Captain, B. Tolliver, R. Tolliver NOT PICTURED: P. Doig. As Signet went to press, the Boys’ Varsity Bowling team had just begun its season. The team placed second in its division with a point record of 8-3 after four matches, which included taking all three points in a match against Clarke. The team had many excellent bowlers, and leading the squad this year was senior Jeff Arndt who was team captain for the third straight year. Seniors Rich Tolliver, Mike Simon, and Phyllis Doig, junior Ken Schmidt, and sophomore Bob Tolliver were all expected to give strong performances in the remaining matches. The team was again looking forward to doing well in the County roll-offs, as well as qualifying for the County Tournament. With a number of senior bowlers graduating, next year's team, aided by upcoming JV bowlers, hopes to have a great season. 177 Baseball BACK ROW: D. Beresheim, J. Arndt. S. Sasso, J. Corrigan. Mr. Terc- Coach, M. White- Captain. L. Lubrano. P. Hopkins, B. Catania. FRONT ROW: R. Fox, M. Dimakos. M. Komorowski. M Lutz, D. O'Connor. H. Gully. It was an outstanding year for the 1980 Varsity Base- ball team. The Mustangs' performance on the diamond saw them finishing second at the end of the regular season. By posting twelve wins and six losses, Mineola achieved its best mark since 1976; it was also good enough to capture a play-off berth. The Mustangs' season started at a crawl, losing the first three games to New Hyde Park and dropping two of three to South Side. The ball club appeared to be in for a long season. However, behind All-Countyman Marty Lutz’s .460 batting average, including 5 homer- uns, and with more power from All-Division honored Pat Hopkins and Matt White, the team's offensive abili- ty soon proved itself. The team was aided further by the dependable pitching of Don Beresheim, Howard Gully and Ron Fox. Other key contributors to the squad included infielders Dan O’Connor, Matt Komorowski and Matt Dimakos, and outfielders Jeff Corrigan and Lou Lubrano. Entering the play-offs, Mineola defeated Seaford and Herricks but lost a heartbreaker to Garden City, 7-6, in 8 innings. With eight players returning, Coach Terc feels that this year’s team will again display its enthusiasm and take part in play-off competition. 178 The Matts are ready for action. Kessler The 1980 Girls’ Softball Team had a very rewarding and successful year. The girls opened their triumphant season with a win of 14-2 against Great Neck South and closed it in a victory over South Side. They became Division Champions with a final record of 12 wins and 3 losses, making them eligible to compete in the county play-offs. Winning the first round against Valley Stream South, the girls entered the second round with great confidence, but they were disappointed when defeated by Herricks in a close game. The team was led by the exceptional batting and fielding of centerfielder Margaret Carolin and shortstop Kathy Burns, who were both chosen as All-Division players. The outstanding pitching of Alice Grodotzke, who had an amazing total of 65 strikeouts throughout the season, earned her an All-Division title as well. As only two seniors will be leaving the starting line-up, Mr. Villani is hopeful of yet another successful season. 182 Linda Kubat awaits action in the outfield. The team came within one game of the play-offs but fell short after suffering a tough loss to Great Neck South, 8-7. Despite a poor record, the team showed strength by defeating Clarke in the opening game. They also acted as a spoiler by beating Hempstead late in the season, thus eliminating Hempstead from the play-offs. Leading the offense was attackman Tommy Ritterbusch, who tallied 52 goals which contributed to his receiving of All-Division honors. Heading the defense was Harold Franke, who was credited with All- League honors. Other notable members included freshman goalie Jerry Coiro, midfielders John Martin and sophomore Phil Canzoneri, who scored four goals in one game against New Hyde Park. With a number of experienced lettermen returning, this year’s Lacrosse team is looking forward to an impressive season. 184 Dan Pitcavage maneuvers around a Freeport defender. Both achieved a final record of 6-2 and qualified for the Conference Championships. Terri Benatti and Sue Ellen Golden, also excellent players, were our first doubles team. They played exceptionally well, but they met tough opposition and were disappointed by a record of 2-6. The team's final overall record was 4 wins and 4 losses, which placed them fourth in their conference. Although many seniors have left the team, their coach, Mr. Spade, is looking forward to a victorious season in the coming year. 186 Terri Benatti serves the birdie. Norberg, J. Sysak, Mr. Malle-Coach. The 1980 Spring Track team completed the season with a league record of one win and three losses. The team showed considerable strength in some individual performances as well as in a number of post-season meets. Leading the team was Eddison Bramble, who set five school records in his junior year. He competed in many post-season events including the Conference Cham- pionship, the Nassau County Championship, the Floral Park Relays, the Nassau Coaches Meet and the Port Washington Invitational. Ken Cox was also a great as- set to the team as a junior. He set the school record for the 110 meter hurdles and participated in the Nassau County Championship and the Port Washington Invita- tional. Another outstanding member was Mike Wright, who tied the junior high jump record and excelled in this event at the Conference Championship. Other contributions to the team included Eric Scheele's long distance running and Russ Norberg's performance in the walk, shot put, and discus. Although the team had a poor record in dual meets, strong support was given by sophomores Brian Cox, Ben Wei, Mark Kubat, Larry Busching, and John Sysak. With all but one track member returning, Coach Malle feels the team should use its experience to make this year a most successful one. 188 Ken Cox clears the hurdle in good form. One of the many talented groups in Mineola High School, the Rockettes showed their enthusiasm as they performed in the Pep Rallies and Half-time Shows at ail home football and basketball games. Under the direction of their advisor, Mrs. Esposito, and the leadership of captains, Laura Bergman and Diane Connor, the girls practiced long, hard hours to perfect their routines. They were also a colorful addition to the Marching Band with which they participated in the 1980 Newsday Marching Band Festival at Hofstra University and the 1980 Columbus Day Parade. Besides attending these perfor- mances, the Rockettes entered into various kickline contests and became the 1980 Nassau County Kickline Champions. They continued their success in the 1980 Long Island Kickline Association Competition where they placed third in the Senior-Large Division. In addition, the group also spon- sored a competition of its own at the high school. With their enthusiasm and determination, the girls should certainly continue their success in future endeavors. L. Besides performing at these events, they hang posters in the lobby and decorate the locker room to build confidence within the teams and spread enthusiasm throughout the school. To raise money this year, the girls held numerous candy sales and hosted their third Annual Cheering Competition. After placing second in the All Long Island Competition last year, the Cheerleaders have continued their outstanding accomplishments this year. They began with their attendance at the NCA Cheering Camp, where the girls learned new cheers, stunts, and chants. Their list of achievements started here when they won superior ribbons, an event which pointed them in the direction of success. They also entered into county competition this year, and under the guidance of their advisor. Miss Finander, and the leadership of captain Eileen McDonnell and co-captain Kim Hansen, the girls worked long, tiring hours to perfect their cheers in preparation for this event. All of their hard practice was not in vain; the girls achieved the title of First Place County Champions, making them eligible to participate in the Long Island Competition held at Hofstra University. This was also the first year that the JV Squad had entered into a county contest. With their high hopes and ambition, they achieved third place in the Brentwood Competition, which also made them eligible to compete for an All Long Island title. Having shown their dedication and enthusiasm in everything they have done, the Cheerleaders were truly an asset to MHS this year. As for next year, the girls hope to continue their success. Their athletic ability is shown in basketball and volleyball. Imagination is exhibited in the creation of Posters, Floats, Costumes, and Songs. Many weeks of hard work and determination are exhibited by everyone involved in presenting this spectacular event. As Frosh on Broadway, the girls of the Class of '81 showed enthusiasm and spirit which continued through their sophomore year. With their theme, Sophs’ Second Childhood, Cheer- ing achieved a perfect score, and poster tied for first. This contributed to a score which placed them second in the competition. As juniors in the Wild West, the girls took first place in sports with a score of 9.5. Whatever the outcome of this year's event, it will always be a high school memory to be cherished by all. TOTS?
