High School Administration MR. PAUL FLANZER Principal As the first graduating class of a new decade, it is most appropriate that the theme of Signet this year is “Explorations. Often times when we think about ex- plorations, we associate the term with earthshaking events such as the voyages of Columbus and Vasco da Gama. Explorations need not be courageous expeditions into the unknown. Most often they begin with the known and involve a tiny step for the individual rather than a giant step for mankind, such as the space probe. During these past four years at Mineola High School, you have learned something about yourselves. Hope- fully, you know what subject areas you like. If you have particular interests or skills, your personal explorations should be the development of these into career possi- bilities. The Wright brothers, for example, had flown kites as boys. In high school they realized that they had me- chanical skills and opened a bicycle repair shop. Their idea for an airplane slowly emerged from changing the shape of a biplane kite to building a series of gliders from the money they made in manufacturing bicycles. You may never make a great discovery or attain great fame or fortune. By following the advice of the Greek philosopher, Socrates — “Know thyself — you can achieve a happy and productive future.
