Election of class officers and participation in activities sponsored by the Music, Drama, and Physical Education Departments also helped to mark this as a special school year. The Class of '81 looks forward to making its next three years at MHS worthwhile and fun. Eileen McDonnell-Secretary Cheryl Obritski-Treasurer 38 39 Lisa Lupinacci-President Maureen Heenan-Vice-President Sophomores The members of the Class of '80 demonstrated their spirit by participating in a variety of activities. The sale of confetti, candy and buttons helped to add needed funds to the class treasury. Receiving class rings proved to be one of the more memorable moments of the year. The enthusiasm already displayed by the Sophomores should help to make their next two years at MHS very enjoyable and productive ones. Liz Toritto-Secretary Jodi Tedone-Treasurer 42 Unda Catalanotto-President Sandra Lavenziano-Vice-President Juniors During its three years at MHS, the Class of '79 has been both involved and productive. The Juniors have sponsored dances and run calendar and candy sales. The most successful fund raiser held this year was the “Grand Flea Market.” All the proceeds from these activities were used to finance the prom which proved to be a highly enjoyable event. The 1977-78 school year was thus an outstanding one for the Class of '79. Susan Malek-Secretary Holly Sandler-Treasurer Joyce Santopetro, President Kathy Briggmann. Vice-President The Class of '78 has grown in many ways with each different experience. The many ac- tivities we have sponsored have taught us to work with our peers as well as to accept a great deal of responsibility. The discoveries we have made throughout our four years at MHS will leave a lasting im- pression that will always remain in our memo- ries. I would like to wish all of you every happi- ness and the fulfillment of all of your dreams in the years to come. Joyce Santopetro Mr. Miller and Mrs. Melchionda. Advisors 54 Debbie Bohn. Secretary Fran Catalanotto. Treasurer Valedictorian Some of the earliest impressions we developed as children were those of the adults around us, such as parents, teachers, doctors and dentists. As youngsters, we admired these people and thought to ourselves, “Some day I want to be just like him.” The way we perceived the occupation of our “idol” greatly influenced our early plans for the future. Perhaps we may have been impressed by their expressions of satisfaction or by their authority in their job. This inspiration may be an influencing factor in our choosing a certain direction in life. As we graduate and enter another phase of life, we will continue to form impressions of new people and places with which we will come in contact. These new impressions may further inspire and affect any other decision we will make. Through these decisions, we will be reaching the goals we have set; once we attain our goals, we must put forth a genuine effort in performing our occupation so that one day we may serve as models for young children and leave impressions upon others. Caroline Contessa Salutatorian Throughout our years at MHS, we have come into contact with many people who have left lasting impressions on us. Both the new friends we have made and the old ones we have kept have in part shaped our lives and our characters. Our teachers have helped us to grow and to recognize the heights we are capable of attaining. In turn, we have also left an impression on others. Each one of us is a special and unique person. Our talents and contribu- tions have helped to make our high school years a time which we will never forget. As our days at MHS draw to a close, we can look back and recall the good experiences that we have had here. The im- pressions we have gained and the memories we will cherish will aid us in all of our future endeavors. 56 Erika Augustin Top 25 BACK ROW: B. Fink. S. Sobel. S. Gundel. J. Santopetro. J. It is a structure that speaks for the entire student body and unites it with the faculty and the community. Representa- tives are elected from their social studies classes to bring about a more direct contact between the officers and the students. A tremendous effort was put forth by the officers and Mr. Demertzis, their advisor, in the numerous activities sponsored by the SO this year. Coach Brown has a very young team which should be his nucleus for the years to come. 178 Jeff Fellman struggles to keep his opponent on the mat. Basketball The members of the 1978 Basketball Team completely turned around their season with a record of 9-9 overall and 5-7 divisional play. As Signet went to press, they were bound for the playoffs. Guided by captains, Dennis Barry and Walter Franklin, the Mustangs won the Great Neck South Christmas Tournament by victories over Herricks in the semi-finals and Great Neck South in the finals. Despite an early hand injury to junior Chris Herwerth, they were able to make the playoffs because of fine shooting by juniors Kedrin Edgerson, who led Mineola scoring, and Gus Lignos. Backing them up were seniors Chris Mackey, Willie Lewis, and Jim Capodiferro. Mr. Schmitt is looking forward to improving their divisional play next season. Also, with the experience gained by the juniors, the upcoming JV members should be able to fit right into the lineup. BACK ROW: W Franklin-captain. J. Capodiferro. K. Edgerson, J. Hargrove, D. Its record reflected the loss of all but three members from the cham- pionship team of '76. Mr. Terc was happy with some fine performances by seniors, captain Bob Landini, named to the All-Division Team, Carl Losnedahl. and Tim Kovel. Among the un- derclassmen were juniors Ken Sasso, Rich Coyne, who batted .370, Chris Mackey, Gary Sheppard, Craig Pratesi, Dennis Barry and sophomores Gus Lignos and Chris Herwerth. The most outstanding game was played on May 10, 1977 against Garden City. It was the team’s longest game ever, and it ended in a tie after 15 innings. Next spring Mr. Terc hopes to completely turn round the last year's problems and get the team back to its winning ways. He also looks forward to a brighter season in '78 with the loss of only seven players and the return of many juniors. Led by captains, Pat Powers, Mike Canavan, and Kenny King, the latter two chosen All-Division, and Kenny also named to the All-County Team, the squad defeated Plainview Kennedy 13-3 in the playoffs. Backing them up and leading the offensive attack were Vinny Guido, Tommy Hughes, Billy Entenmann, Dom Conte, and Dave Redmond, and on defense Jeff Tola, Walter Glenn, Bob Gerung and Rich Leone. Next season, the team will try to gain another playoff berth and take the County championship. Mr. Czerniewicz was happy with the team’s performance thus far. Led by senior captain Alan Hlavenka, who has one of the highest averages on the North Shore, the team has won convincing victories over Garden City, Roslyn, and Glen Cove. Other key marksmen are Steve Berube, Chris Shea, and Bernie Berger. Since only three members will be Ipst to graduation, another excellent season should await the team next year. 186 CAPTAIN: A. The girls are coached by Mr. Kuchinski and led by co-captains, Lucy Guido and Maureen Fitzpatrick. The co-captains and Theresa Henderson and Mau- reen Grodotzke are four returning starters from last year's undefeated league championship team. Add this fact to the enthusiasm and strong bench power of the squad, and the team should be a top contender for the playoff spots. Not to be overlooked is our JV team which has a record of 2-1. With the combined efforts of their new coach, Mr. DeLuca and the team's co-captains, Kathy Burns and Maryann Hacker, JV should also have a successful season. JV BACK ROW: Mr DeLuca-Coach. Ms. Messina. Serving, setting, and spiking are vital skills needed to play an exciting volleyball game. These skills were clearly visible during this year’s volleyball season. The girls' varsity team was coached by Ms. Messina and led by co-captains Maryann Linehan and Maureen Grodotzke. The team finished its season with a record of 7-7. Ms. Messina cited Maureen Grodotzke as varsity's best setter and Joanne Orlando as the most proficient spiker. JV rounded out its season with a stunning record of 9-5. The captain was Maryann Hacker, and the coach was Ms. Fitzpatrick. Since many of the girls were underclassmen, the team looks very promising for next year. 190 BACK ROW: P. Doig, J. Tomecek. A. The girls' sports season got off to an encour- aging start this year as a result of the winning ways of our field hockey team. Ms. Messina, an inspiring coach, along with co-captains, Mau- reen Fitzpatrick and Maryann Linehan, led the varsity team. They ended the season with a record of 3-3-2 which placed them tied for third in the league. MHS should be very proud of Maureen Grodotzke and Maryann Linehan, two varsity members who were chosen for the all star field hockey team. The JV squad was not as successful as the varsity. Their final record was 1-5-2. As there were many underclassmen on the team, the experience they gained should promote an im- proved season next year. BACK ROW: D. Marcelonis. D. D’Ascoli, R. Baugh. However, when SIGNET went to press, the team’s record was rapidly improving. Varsity moved to third place in the league while JV jumped into first. One of the better scorers for the team, as cited by Ms. Rush, their coach, was Joan Gallagher. The girls have two more matches to play this season and hope to improve their standings in the league. Under the leadership of co-captains, Ro Corso and Anna Richo, and their advisor Mrs. Lynch, the girls give crowd pleasing performances as a result of many hours of vigorous practice. The JV Squad works under the direction of co-captains, Lee Massaro and Diane DiGangi. After many hours of physically exerting practice, the girls perform lively cheers and stunts for audiences at football and basketball games and pep rallies. They are a great asset to our Physical Educa- tion Department. With the help of Ms. Rush, their advisor, the Leader Corps Cadets are planning a progressive dinner during the year and a banquet at the year’s termination. GAA BACK ROW: S. Sobel, D. Solosky, S. Membership is achieved through the accumulation of 100 points or more by participating in activities such as Girls’ Week, interscholastic sports, and intra- mural programs. By taking part in these areas, the members of GAA exhibit their dedication to womans’ sports. With guidance from Ms. Messina, their advisor, and Maryann Linehan, the club's president, the girls are making plans for the year. These include a swimming and ice skating trip and a day at Great Adventure. Girls’ Week Girls’ Week is a yearly opportunity for the girls of Mineola High School to display their creativity, athletic ability, and sportsmanship. The event is sponsored by the Girls’ Athletic Department. Each class devotes many hours of practice and hard work in preparation to compete in volleyball, basketball, entrance, dance, poster, cheer, float, and song. As Frosh on the Sunny Surf, Sophs Saluting the Armed Forces, and Juniors in Transylvania, the Seniors of ’ 78 will look back upon the laughter and tears shared in their quest to achieve first place. More than any other time during the year, Girls’ Week is an opportunity for each girl to enjoy the closeness of working together towards a common goal. r V «i. ii ; p...
