Text from Pages 1 - 248 of the 1976 volume:
“
Emotions, a reflection of our inner selves, are the means by which we reveal our personalities. These feelings result from our individual reactions Friendships, and accomplishments, as well as interests provide us with moments of joy. This joy turns to sorrow when what we cherish is lost with the passing of time. A sense of fear overcomes us when we realize that we must face troubling situations alone. 8 — i-- ■ Often, we rely on an outward display of amusement to lessen these apprehensions and bring laughter to those around us. In addition, there are other diverse emotions such as pride, 12 which aid us in preserving our individuality. Life is the enjoyment of emotion, derived from the past and aimed at the future.” Alfred North Whitehead District Administration MR. GEORGE RUSSO — Assistant Superintendent for Personnel DR. LOUIS FORMICA — Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. SAMUEL DONATO — Business Manager DR. MARK WAYNE — Superintendent of Schools Board Of Education STANDING: MR. TOM DINAPOLI. MR. WAL- TER SYSAK. FRED PILKINGTON — Assistant Principal The editors of Signet have chosen “emotions” to be the theme of this yearbook. For a human being to be complete, he must balance intellect with emotions. The human computer who doesn’t love, hate, laugh or worry is an incomplete person. He is as handicapped as one who acts out of impulse and, as one author puts it, “surren- ders to the murky passions of the human heart.” Education, since the time of Confucius, has taught us to think and to feel. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you” is an invitation for us to both feel and think about the impact of our actions on others. Emotions, particularly the ability to empathize, are what makes us civilized. We must do more than know about other people and think for ourselves. We must be sensitive to the feelings of others. Out of our emotions come the virtues of people who are generally well-liked, we find them to be able to project their feelings and to exude genuine personal warmth. As you, the members of the Bicentennial Senior Class, look over this copy of Signet, you cannot help but remember — with some emotion — your experiences over the past four years. Prospects of an unknown future bring forth other feelings. I wish each of you a life of contentment and fulfillment. May your intellect and emotions guide you toward happiness ahead. Paul Flanzer MR. This school year has been a time for meeting new friends, making decisions, and formulating goals for the future. The class of ’79 has already shown its eagerness to become involved by par- ticipating in the activities of the Physical Education, Dra- ma, and Music Depart- ments. The Frosh are look- ing forward to a productive, enjoyable, and worthwhile high school life. President As a result of their partici- pation in last year’s activi- ties, the Sophomores have evolved into a well-organized and productive class. This year they have engaged in numerous fund-raising en- deavors, the most outstand- ing of which were bake sales and a Foxy T-shirt sale. The drive and initiative which the class of ’78 has already shown will surely aid it in its last two years at MHS. Marie Lombardo, Vice-President Joyce Santopetro, Secretary Judy Santopetro. Treasurer Mr. Miller and Mrs. Broder — Advisors 42 43 Juniors Lauren Lowell. President Annette Charles. Secretary The class of 1977 has had many opportunities to dis- play its enthusiasm and spir- it during the past three years. The Juniors have con- tributed their leadership and integrity to numerous facets of life at MHS. In order to increase their class trea- sury, they have initiated fund-raising events ranging from a Tootsie-Roll Bank Sale to an auction. These ac- tivities should certainly cul- minate in a successful prom and an enjoyable senior year. Ann McCarey. Vice-President Janice Kelly. Treasurer Mr. Basiliere and Mrs. Mastellone — Advisors 46 47 Valedictorian As graduating seniors, we have reached the end of our high school education. Before us lie infinite paths of alternatives which were made available through schooling. It is up to us to choose the path we make for ourselves, to assume its responsibilities, and to follow it de- spite the obstacles we may encounter. The path is our own; no two are the same. It is what we, as individuals, make for ourselves. In order to do this, we must know who we are, and where we are going — we must under- stand ourselves. Therefore, it is necessary for us to acknowledge our emotions, for our emo- tions define our personalities. We must also desire to reach out and understand the emo- tions of others. Once we know who we are. and once we recognize our feelings, goals, hopes, and limits, we will have achieved an important degree of emotional maturity. We can then choose our own path and move ahead into our world of the future. Camille Contessa Salutatorian As a person departs from high school and, consequently, the sense of security it has giv- en, he can face the future in a number of ways. Undoubtedly, one’s state of mind at such a critical time is the factor that most determines possible success or probable failure. This all-important state of mind depends on what emotions a person decides to display. Those who feel hopeful have proven them- selves equal to the task of facing a most impor- tant challenge. But one who is driven to fear and anxiety by the loss of four years of security and entirely new circumstances can expect the future to always be just that — fearful. It is our task, as we go our respective ways following graduation, to conquer the fear that accompanies such a drastic change as leaving four years of high school and perhaps twelve years of friends. With a display of hope, we can make our future years, whatever they hold for us, far brighter than those behind us. It is sim- ply a matter of conquering our negative emo- tions. Patrick Connor 54 Top 25 The Top 25 seniors are a group of hard- working, diligent, and involved individuals. The 1975 Varsity Football Team, coached by Mr. Gehrke. Mr. Young, and Mr. Kuchinsky, ended the season with a 4 and 4 record. The team had a disappointing year considering the quality of the players, but there were many bad breaks. In the Wantagh game toward the end of the season. Mineola was without its entire starting backfield. The final game against Herricks was perhaps a greater indica- tion of what the team could do. The Mustangs scored on two long drives putting them ahead by a score of 14-0. Then the defense took over, stopping the Highlanders within our ten yard line. Mineola was again moving the ball upfield when time ran out. For their outstanding play, fullback and captain Joe Letosky and linemen Scott Kalberer and Martin Powers, were named to the All-Division Team. The latter, Martin Powers, was also chosen to the Gridiron 44. a team composed of 44 superior players from Nassau County. Although the team will be losing such outstanding seniors as Nick DeFilippis, John DeStefano, Phil Senft, Joe Letosky, John Williams, Martin Powers, and Allan Cherkin, the returning players will have gained more experience in varsity competition. Hence, next year’s squad should be an improved one. 178 Bob Landini throws to a receiver downfield. John DeStefano punts the ball upfield. 179 Quarterback Nick DeFilippis rolls out to throw a pass. The team finished in third place, a position which qualified it for the playoffs. Reaching the semi-finals of the North Shore Championships, the team defeated Great Neck North and Farmingdale by scores of 2-1 before losing a tough overtime game to North Shore. For their outstanding individual performances, George Mecerod was chosen for the All-County team and Brian Grodotzke for the All-Division team. George was also selected as Nassau County’s Most Valuable Player. Other standouts included goalie Jack Barry, Ray Koch, Donald Plass, Joe Woods, Tom Bonazinga, and Tony Nunes. As Signet went to press, the 1975-76 Varsity Bas- ketball Team had compiled a league record of 1-4 and a 4-7 record overall. Among the leaders of the Mineola offense were co-captain John D’Amato, guard Jim Sheehan, cen- ter and co-captain Jack Barry, and last year’s All- Division forward, Allan Cherkin. These four players comprised the Mustang’s main attack and were most effective from both inside and out. On the other hand, the team lacked consistency under the boards, where a large part of the game is played. But Mineola made up for this by the out- standing defense played by Bill Birk, Tom Brigg- mann, Bob Landini, and Ron Tamraz. Jack Leone also played well, but he sustained an injury and was out for much of the season. Among the highlights of the season was the selec- tion of Jack Barry on the Cold Spring Harbor All- Tournament team. John D’Amato’s 29 points against Glen Cove, Barry’s 26 point performance versus Port Washington, and numerous high scoring efforts by Allan Cherkin showed the offensive capa- bility of the Mustangs. With all but three of the varsity players graduat- ing, next year’s team is hoping for some talented JV members. 182 John D'Amato concentrates on the basket. Mineola rebounders battle for the ball. In this year's Herricks Tournament, out- standing performances by seniors Bob Gund and John Bellissimo earned them second place trophies. Charlie Burke captured third place. Among the other top grapplers were sen- iors Paul Meringolo, Brian Plitt, John DeSte- fano, Tom Jahn, Don Plass, and Joe Woods. Junior Don Caro and sophomore Dom Conte also turned in outstanding performances. The team looked forward to an enjoyable and successful season as it advanced into its league schedule. The 1975 Varsity Baseball Team, coached by Mr. Terc. finished the season with a 9-9 record, enabling it to com- pete in the playoffs. In these playoffs, the underdog. Mineola. defeated both Farmingdale and North Shore to reach the quarter-finals where the team was defeated by a score of 8-7. Though the squad lost this game, the Mustangs came back from a five run deficit proving that the game is never over until the last out. The team was strong both offensively and defensively, but it lacked experience in playing varsity ball. The Mus- tangs were comprised of eleven juniors, three sopho- mores. and only one senior. For their outstanding play. Doug Williams. Allan Cherkin. and Nick DeFilippis were named to the All-Division Team. Nick was also chosen for the Nassau County All-Star Team. During the course of the long hard season, seniors Bob Provenzano, the high scorer, and Kim Shea, a first year man, were standouts. The team worked well together, and there were many out- standing individual performances by Joe Tesauro. Shawn McPartland. Len Santosus. Pete Woodward. Joe Toritto, and George Mecerod. The hard work and effort displayed by the team paid off at the North Shore Championship Meet. Mineola surprised everyone when it fin- ished second out of a large and very competitive field. Joe Tesauro placed first in the half-mile run, while George Mecerod’s double victory in the shot and discus enabled him to be awarded the “Top Field Events Performer” trophy. At the Section VIII championships, George Mecerod continued his fine efforts by taking second place in both of the weight events. This qualified him for the state championships where he finished the year with two fine performances. The 1976 season should be a good one for the squad. With many returning lettermen and a solid underclassmen showing, the track team is looking forward to an even bigger and better year. 190 Sprinter Joe Toritto in the starting blocks. In the one meet in which the team competed, the North Shore Class Meet, there were many standouts. George Mecerod placed first in the shot put while Joe Toritto, Tim Brosnan, Kevin Fitzpatrick, and Len Santosus placed first in the mile relay. In addition, Joe Toritto placed second in the 1,000 yard run, junior Ed Tomaszewski fourth in the 50 yard sprint, and soph Doug Muller placed third in the 50 yard sprint for his age group. The school record for throwing the shot is held by George Mecerod. Each time he competes he continues to set new records for MHS, and George is one of the top two shot putters in New York State. Although the team will lose many important seniors next year, with returning lettermen Ed Tomas- zewski, Lloyd Widom, Doug Muller, Kenny Sasso, and James Casement the team hopes to be as successful as in previous years. 192 Cross Country BACK ROW: Mr. Young — Coach. Other standouts included Mark Rossano and juniors Scott Williams and Ernie Heymsfield. Special praise is due Rich Waters who filled a large gap caused by many injuries. With many experienced lettermen returning, the team is looking forward to another successful season next year. 193 Rifle BACK ROW: Mr. Czerniewicz — Coach. M. Miller. G. Lesmeister, J. Salka. J. Since three of the Mustang’s marksmen, captain Mark Miller, Jim Karas, and John Salka were among the top ten shooters on the North Shore, the team proved tough to beat. Some of the other high scorers were Greg Lesmeister. Mike Gadaleta, Maris Lemanis, and Steve Berger. This year’s senior members have set a fine example for next year’s squad. As Signet went to press, the 1975-76 Bowling Team had compiled a record of 9- 21. Coached by Mr. Wright, the team con- sisted mostly of underclassmen with little experience in league competition. Among the better keglers were captain Jimmy Tubbs, a sophomore, and senior Cliff Ka- letsky, the high scorer. Their coach, Mrs. Messina, encouraged the girls to develop skills and teamwork during the season. The only goals scored in the games were by junior Laurie Turini, one of the more aggressive Varsity members. Captains Ellen Pfeifer and Anne Canavan tried hard to assist all of the girls at the practices and games. The JV team played well and displayed many fine skills. Next year’s Varsity looks for a very promising season. Most of the players will be returning with the exception of Ellen Pfeifer, the only senior member. i% The team relaxes after a tough half. The MHS Girls’ Basketball Team had just begun its season as Signet went to press. With Mr. Kuchinsky in his second season as coach, the Varisty team overpowered Division in its first scrimmage by a score of 69-29. Cap- tains Sheila Traube and Maureen Fitzpatrick were the high scorers, with 15 and 14 points respectively. Aside from four returning varsity players, the team was fairly inexperienced but displayed much effort and talent. The JV team, with its new coach Miss Koetzner and many new players, is working hard to attain a good re- cord. The two teams should experience excellent seasons with all the hard work, enthusiasm, and spirit they have shown thus far. Monica Thomas on the foul line. Coached by Mrs. Person, the team had a record of two wins and six losses, with wins coming against East Rockaway by a score of 7-4 and Southside 9-1. Much spirit and skill were displayed during the season by singles Valda Norris and Denise Glover. Doubles Karen Anderson and Ourania Vassiliadis also proved to be outstanding players. The efforts shown by the underclassmen along with the experience gained during this past season should lead to a more successful season next year. Volleyball BACK ROW: L. Guzzardi. B Shields. Coach Mrs. Messina, along with Varsity cap- tain Debbie Sandler and JV captain Sue Gundel, helped to devel- op fine skills and encourage teamwork among the players. The Varsity team, with a record of 4-2 and one game to go, was looking forward to being in the playoffs. The JV had also done extremely well with a 4-1 record. After losing its opener, the Varsity beat Valley Stream North in a tough three game match. Following its second loss, the team proceeded to win three consecutive matches, including victories against Lynbrook and Carey by scores of 15-6 and 17-15. The JV also beat many good teams, including Malverne and Oceanside. The effort and enthusiasm displayed by the members have been an asset to the team this season. Sponsored annually by the Girls' Athletic Department, it involves girls from each class who vie for first place in sports, entrance, dance, poster, cheer, float, and song. Weeks of hard work go into this com- petition which culminates in a final display of talent. As Frosh Under the Big Top, Sophs in the Old West, and Juniors at the UN, the Class of 76 will always remember its efforts to attain first place. The girls who have participated deserve a great amount of praise for their patience, co- operation, and diligence. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
